Monreal contract update is bad news for Arsenal’s defensive woes

[ad_pod ]

Football.London journalist James Benge has rubbished the prospect of Nacho Monreal leaving Arsenal on a free transfer this summer.

What’s the word?

It has been claimed that Monreal could leave the club this summer, with many outlets, including The Sun, claiming that he is available for nothing when the transfer window reopens.

The 33-year-old has made 31 appearances for the club in all competitions this season.

But Benge claims that Arsenal have already activated a clause within the player’s contract extending his stay at the Emirates, making his new deal end in the summer of 2020.

It does not appear as though the club formally announced the extension, however, perhaps leading to the confusion.

Barcelona had been touted as a possible destination for the veteran full-back but it now appears as though he will be staying at the club this summer unless an interested party is willing to pay a transfer fee.

Bad news

This is not good news for Arsenal fans.

Monreal’s legs have well and truly gone and it is a damning indictment on the club’s transfer policy that he is still being relied upon.

Sead Kolasinac, though, has not stepped up as many expected he would and it has been left to the Spaniard to occupy the left back position on many occasions, as well as filling in at left centre back.

At the age of 33, regardless of his contract status, Arsenal should be looking to shop Monreal around and attract bids for him.

In fact, letting him leave on a free transfer this summer would not be the worst thing in the world and would allow Unai Emery to recruit a young, dynamic full-back in his stead.

As it is, however, the position is stale and a clear Achilles heel that rivals have been able to exploit. And it looks as though it will stay that way until 2020.

I thought he’d be great: Liverpool fans reminisce about Andy Carroll

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have been reminiscing about Andy Carroll’s first two goals for the club, as it is exactly eight years to the day since the powerful striker netted twice against Manchester City.

Carroll’s first-half double at Anfield against the Citizens were his first goals in a Liverpool shirt following his £35m deadline day arrival from Newcastle, and he set the Reds on their way to earning a 3-o lead over Roberto Mancini’s men at half-time.

Mo Salah has been brutally mocked for his recent diving antics in a new video by 442oons. Check it out below…

After that game, many Liverpool fans felt that the lanky forward was set to become a hero at the club, although it proved to be a false dawn for the current West Ham man – Carroll would go on to score just nine more goals for the club across 58 appearances.

However, the Reds fanbase were not to know this.

Whilst we now know that Carroll flopped on Merseyside, many Liverpool fans on Twitter have revealed that they thought the England international was all set to be the next big thing after his impressive brace…

Newcastle fans on Twitter fume at Almiron blow

Miguel Almiron is yet to show what he can do at St James Park this season. The Paraguayan midfielder has it all in his locker. Goals, assists and work rate, yet it hasn’t clicked for him in England yet. It now looks like he may have to wait until next season for it to happen too, as he was withdrawn with injury against Southampton yesterday.

The classy attacking midfielder has proven to work well with the likes of Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez in the Magpies’ front three, yet he hasn’t scored a goal for the club yet. The chances for the attacking midfielder have been there, but he just hasn’t been able to convert and now the fears are that with a hamstring injury he’ll be waiting until next season to net his first goal in the Premier League.

It cost a lot of money to bring Almiron to the club and the fans have taken to him very quickly. His industrious nature has brought him plenty of admirers in the Northeast and St James Park erupts when he shows off his legs, and we can only imagine what the scenes will look like when he finally breaks his duck. The hopes are that he makes it back before the end of the season, but given the way he went down yesterday they’re not holding out hope.

The Magpies hate seeing their players suffer injury, and Almiron will be sorely missed.

Has he seen him play? Aston Villa fans react to news that Lansbury could replace Grealish

[ad_pod ]

Henri Lansbury could be Jack Grealish’s possible replacement if he were to leave Aston Villa, according to Birmingham Live, who say Dean Smith sees him as the man to step up and fill their talisman’s shoes.

It’s news that hasn’t been taken very positively by some Villa supporters, who of course have a great affection for Grealish.

One fan laid into Lansbury in response, saying that he wasn’t fit to lace Grealish’s boots, whilst others picked up on his horrendous injury list since arriving at Villa Park.

Another supporter asked if the manager had even seen him play yet, such is the continued absence of the midfielder this season.

The former Arsenal man has started just one game and made two substitute appearances this term because of injury.

He also sat on the sidelines for a lengthy period of time throughout the 2017/18 campaign, playing only ten times.

The 28-year-old’s spell with the club hasn’t gone down too well and it does seem slightly odd that Smith may see him as the man to replace one of their key players.

Here’s what supporters have been saying.

Leeds fans rave about Mallik Wilks on Twitter

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been full of praise for youngster Mallik Wilks after he put in another great performance for Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.

Wilks has been plying his trade in League One for Donny this season and has been in red hot form since joining on loan from the Championship promotion contenders last summer.

The tricky winger has netted 15 times for Doncaster so far this campaign and Leeds fans have certainly sat up and paid attention to his form.

Wilks scored a brilliant goal against Walsall, using a fantastic piece of skill to leave two opposition defenders for dead before picking out the far corner and firing into the back of the net.

Leeds supporters have been vocal on Twitter sounding their appreciation for the 20-year-old with one believing he should be loaned out to the Championship once his spell in the third tier at Doncaster is finished, whilst others are hoping he finds some first-team action under Marcelo Bielsa upon his return.

Here’s a look at what Leeds fans are saying on Twitter…

Tottenham fans are not interested in signing Ayoze Perez

[ad_pod ]

Well, it would be fair to say that the Tottenham Hotspur fans do not want their club to move for Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez in this summer’s transfer window.

In a recent interview with Marca, Perez admitted that he will return to Spain before the end of his career, whilst he also discussed reported interest from the likes of Tottenham and Everton.

The 25-year-old was brilliant against Everton last weekend, scoring twice and providing an assist in Newcastle’s 3-2 win at St James’ Park.

In total, the forward has scored seven times and registered four assists in 33 appearances in all competitions for his English club this season.

The Tottenham fans have been discussing a potential move for the Spaniard and it would be fair to say that not too many are interested in chairman Daniel Levy signing Perez.

Billing’s comments suggest Huddersfield exit is probable

[ad_pod ]

With each passing week, Huddersfield Town’s relegation from the Premier League looks ever more certain. Whilst it’s not yet mathematically impossible for the Terriers to avoid the drop, Jan Siewert’s side are rooted to the bottom of the table, twelve points off safety with only nine games left to play.

It’s been a tough campaign at the John Smith’s Stadium, though there have been one or two bright sparks for the Yorkshire club, not least the performances of Philip Billing. However, it looks as though Huddersfield may soon be without the 22-year-old midfielder too.

What’s the story?

As reported by the Press Association, and quoted by Yahoo, the 6’4” Dane has admitted that rival clubs may well try and sign him this summer. The No. 8 said: “Of course clubs will be interested…Whatever happens in the summer or next season, I don’t know. Anything can happen. We might go down, I might stay, I might leave, who knows?”

Clearly, then, the former Denmark under-21 international hasn’t closed the door on leaving Huddersfield.

His form this season has certainly been deserving of a second chance in the top flight should the Terriers go down, and considering he has a Transfermarkt valuation of just £6.3 million and has less than two years left on his current contract, he wouldn’t be too difficult for another Premier League club to prise away from the John Smith’s Stadium in the transfer window.

It would be a blow for Siewert to see the academy graduate go, but the German manager must already be seeking potential replacement options.

A hole to fill

The powerful midfielder would leave a big hole in the Huddersfield squad. His physicality, pace and aerial prowess make him such an effective force in the middle of park. On top of that, Billing is also very technically gifted, can create goalscoring opportunities, and has a good shot from range. Finding a player that combines all those attributes won’t be easy.

Instead, Siewert may have to take the decision to replicate Billing’s contribution in the form of more than one replacement player. Whatever solution he finds though, it is vital that Huddersfield effectively replace Billing this summer should they lose him.

Newcastle’s prospective owners target Mauricio Pochettino

Newcastle United’s prospective takeover is still yet to be confirmed but that seemingly hasn’t stopped them from preparing for next season as fresh reports suggest the Saudi-backed consortium will look to replace Steve Bruce with one man in particular.

According to Le 10 Sport, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is very close to becoming the next Magpies manager with negotiations said to be ‘at an advanced stage.’

They also suggest that the Argentine is their number one priority for the role, currently favourite with punters using their BetWinner bonus code even with Rafa Benitez’s name in the hat.

ESPN recently claimed that Pochettino would cost a whopping £12.5m for any club willing to take him on as Spurs included such terms as part of his departure in November.

However, this is thought to expire next month, so if the Magpies’ new owners want to land him in May, they’ll have to fork out a fortune.

Bruce is also still under contract for the next two years, meaning they would have to pay him off at least £2.25m as the 59-year-old is reportedly on £20k-per-week at St James’ Park.

And then there is, of course, the wage packet that Pochettino would clean up for taking the job. Last week there were suggestions that he could land himself £19m per year according to Sky Sports, but it remains to be seen what sort of wages the 48-year-old would command.

It’s reasonable to suggest that it would be well above Bruce’s current offering.

All in all, if Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, led by Amanda Staveley, want to clinch the Champions League finalist this month, they are going to have to spend at least £15m – or more.

West Ham fans react to David Moyes substituting Pablo Fornals on for Manuel Lanzini

West Ham United found themselves chasing the game against Sheffield United, after a mix-up between David Martin and Fabian Balbuena gifted Oliver McBurnie the only goal of the game.

With seven minutes of the match remaining, David Moyes decided that he was going to make his last available substitution in an attempt to claw the result back.

In the end, he opted to bring Pablo Fornals on for Manuel Lanzini with his last opportunity to impact the game.

Fans agreed that the Spaniard should have been introduced to the action, but they felt frustrated that it took so long to get him on.

One fan referred to the 23-year-old as “the most in-form player we have”, so there was understandable concern about seeing him on the bench for so long.

In the end, the time constraints got the better of Fornals, as he failed to make much of an impact. He didn’t produce any key passes, dribbles or shots, while making a total of three attempted passes.

The Spaniard should feel hard-done-by that he was brought on so late, with many Hammers fans believing that he should have been on the pitch from the very start.

This is a player who had got a goal and three assists from his last seven league games, as well as a goal and assist in the FA Cup win against Gillingham.

For Moyes to then leave him out clearly caused frustration, which was only heightened by the fact that he was introduced to the action so deep into the game, as a number of fans suggested it happened “83 minutes too late”.

Meanwhile, West Ham fans fumed over ExWHUemployee’s transfer claim.

Rangers fans blast midfield performances ahead of huge week

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Rangers fans have been reflecting on the weekend’s action and looking ahead to Boxing Day, and they’re really worried about the lack of quality in Steven Gerrard’s midfield.

Rangers climbed within one point of Celtic on Sunday, coming from behind to win at McDiarmid Park courtesy of an incredible display from Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombian international, who is now far and away the top scorer in the league with eleven goals, bagged the equaliser with 25 minutes to go after Matthew Kennedy had put the hosts in front on the stroke of half time.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below...

Morelos grabbed his second of the game with just minutes to spare thanks to an assist from James Tavernier, but there were some worrying signs for Gerrard despite the second half comeback.

The Gers were completely off the pace before the interval, and the absence of Ryan Jack in midfield was worryingly evident.

None of Lassana Coulibaly, Andy Halliday or Ross McCrorie came anywhere close to filling Jack’s shoes, and fans are really not happy with the midfield performance.

The Gers welcome Hibs to Ibrox on Wednesday before the epic showdown against Celtic at the weekend, but the Twitter reactions down below do not make pretty reading…
