Waugh reads the signs

LONDON – Mark Waugh can see the signs and knows what they mean.Make runs against Pakistan, or your international cricket career isover. And like his twin, Steve, who is at a similar crossroad, he has come toEngland for a lightning stint in county cricket to get his eye in andsome runs on the board in time for Australia’s relocated three-Testseries against Pakistan in Sri Lanka and Sharjah next month.Waugh, who has not played since Australia’s last Test against SouthAfrica in April, arrived in London today to play the last four games ofthe county season for Essex, while Steve is one match into his similarstint with Kent. The 37-year-old twins were dropped from the national one-day side lastseason and speculation mounted over their places in the Test team aftera lean summer each against New Zealand and South Africa. And Mark acknowledged the Pakistan series was his last chance to ensurehe stayed in the team for the home Ashes series against England.”I don’t feel under pressure but I know I’ve got to make runs in thePakistan series,” he said.”If I don’t make runs there, I don’t think I’ll be playing in the Ashes,so it’s up to me to perform now.”I’m not stupid, I know when the signs are there. But I think I’mbatting well enough to make runs.”Last season I was getting to 30 and 40 pretty easy and I was justgetting out. I’ve just got to convert those scores to some big scores.”While his Test career is in the balance, Waugh, one of the all-timegreat limited overs batsmen, has all but given up hope of a return toAustralia’s one-day team.”I’d like to play one-day cricket but realistically it’s a forlornchance, but you never know. If players get injured or lose form and I’mplaying well, they might look for experience,” he said.”They’ve not gone totally but I wouldn’t say my chances are great.”It is disappointing because I still think I’m good enough to play atthat level.”Cricket was not his primary reason for coming to England, with booksignings and promotions for his recently released biography his firstengagement.Essex, with whom he has spent four seasons in the 1980s and ’90s,coincidentally contacted him when he was due over here for businessanyway and he jumped at the chance. He hinted he could return to Essex to see out his career.”It depends on how long I play for Australia, if this season goes wellwith Australia then probably not, if it doesn’t then I might come back.”He plays his first game next week but will not get to play against Stevein either a championship or one-day match.

Leeds fans should watch Damsgaard vs England

While Leeds United fans will be eager to watch Kalvin Phillips in action when England take on Denmark in the semi-finals of EURO 2020, they might want to be keeping a closer eye on another player on show tonight; Mikkel Damsgaard.

Reports in recent days have claimed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have got their sights set on the Sampdoria star, with Turkish publication Sabah claiming that the Whites, along with the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Liverpool, among others, are all interested in signing him.

And, after news emerged of Leeds’ interest in the winger, Noel Whelan threw his backing behind a potential move.

He said: “Wow, now he would be a signing. From what I have seen, he is the next big thing coming out of Denmark. Again, we are looking at players who are the right age and of the right profile. Somebody who would compliment what Marcelo Bielsa already has.

“Leeds nowadays are very intense and aggressive in their style of play and fitness plays a huge part. He looks to me as if he could do that as well, which is important because it’s not just about the little flicks. Damsgaard is a very exciting prospect. If we could get that deal over the line it would show just how far we’ve come in the last couple of years.”

More than the fact the 20-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign with Sampdoria going forward – he scored two goals and provided four assists, including against the likes of Inter and Milan – it’s his defensive work that marks him out as the kind of player that Bielsa needs at Elland Road.

Sofascore lifts one of the left-winger’s biggest strengths as his “high pressing”, and when you look at his defensive numbers, it’s clear to see why.

Despite the position he plays, he averaged an impressive 1.2 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game in Serie A – only Jack Harrison betters his tackles per game among Leeds’ attacking players, while only Raphinha made more interceptions.

Dubbed as “magical” by Norwegian football expert Martin Mikkelsen, he also added that the 21-year-old is “dynamic and can go both ways. He is creative but also so mature in his decisions.”

And that ability to be an influence going forward, but not forgetting his defensive duties makes him the perfect wide player for Bielsa.

The £26m-rated star has also been hailed as being “phenomenal” by Denmark teammate, Kasper Schmeichel, for his performances in the competition this summer, and England will be hoping that he doesn’t turn up with a big-time performance.

But while Leeds fans will be desperate for Phillips to do well, they may want to keep a close eye on a player who Victor Orta wants to sign ahead of the new Premier League season.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign a dream De Paul alternative in this star…

Dalic delivers update on Gers’ Barisic

Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic has revealed Glasgow Rangers left-back Borna Barisic has had an MRI scan and could miss a large chunk of the rest of Euro 2020.

The Lowdown: Barisic struggling

Barisic was selected by his national team manager to represent his country at this summer’s European Championships.

However, he was not in the squad for the clash against England, which Croatia lost 1-0, and the boss revealed he was struggling with an injury.

The Latest: Still out

Speaking after that defeat to The Three Lions, Dalic provided an update on the £5.4m-valued 28-year-old (Transfermarkt). He said (via The Daily Record):

“Borna arrived to the camp and missed two training sessions because of a back injury he had previously with his club.

“He started working out again but unfortunately he’s not in the same shape as he was during the whole season.

“He did an MRI scan today so we will see exactly what the situation with him is over the next few days.

“It is a problem for us, especially against Scotland when he would be at home.

“We will have to see his results then we will know more about his status going forward.”

The Verdict: Knock-on effect for Gers?

In the short-term, this is a blow for Barisic. He will have been eager to represent his nation at a major tournament, and it now appears he may not even have the chance to take the pitch.

It remains to be seen how big the issue is when the the results from the MRI scan come in.

For Rangers, though, it could be a big issue in the longer-term. Dalic has suggested he has been struggling with this back problem for quite a while, and he has a history of injuries at Ibrox (Transfermarkt).

The last thing Steven Gerrard will be wanting is to be without his first-choice left-back when the club’s Champions League qualifying campaign begins.

In other news, Rangers fans laud this man’s Euro 2020 performance.

Paul Stewart fears for Tottenham following Paulo Fonseca decision

Tottenham could find themselves battling relegation under Paulo Fonseca in the upcoming Premier League season, warns former player Paul Stewart.

Chairman Daniel Levy has turned to the former AS Roma boss after missing out on a host of other targets, though the club’s manager situation is unlikely to be the only thing that has given him a headache recently.

Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham also remains in doubt, adding to this chaotic period for the north London outfit.

All in all, Stewart is worried about what lies ahead for his former side. He told TT in an exclusive interview:

“They could find themselves maybe even battling relegation if they don’t watch or mind how they go about it because it’s not an easy league. Every week you come up against a team that’s going to give everything.

“Spurs could find themselves in a dog-fight.”

Indeed, the 2020/21 campaign could end up being a very challenging one for Tottenham and their new manager.

However, if Spurs are able to keep hold of Kane, they should be able to avoid a complete catastrophe and at least challenge for something, be it a Champions League place or the League Cup again.

When you have a forward who can create and score goals like the England captain, as Tottenham have shown in recent years, you’re likely to at least be in the conversation.

Newcastle will sign Willems

A transfer report from German news outlet Bild has claimed that Newcastle United will sign Jetro Willems for free in the summer window.

The Lowdown: Newcastle need a left-back

Jamal Lewis has clearly fallen out of favour with Steve Bruce, having been left on the bench in the St. James’ Park faithful’s last ten games in the Premier League, and only coming on for a mere six minutes in total in that time (Transfermarkt).

It has not quite worked out for the Northern Ireland international in the North East since his £14.85m move from Norwich City in last summer’s window, and so given that Willems is out of contract this summer, he would offer a much lower risk option with no transfer fee to be paid.

The Latest: Newcastle will sign Willems

As per Bild, the Tyneside club will sign Willems once his current contract at Eintracht Frankfurt ends, with the deal said to be close.

It would spark a return to the Magpies for the £2.7m-rated (Transfermarkt) Netherlands international after spending the 2019/20 season on loan there.

The Verdict: Willems transfer makes sense

Given that there is no transfer fee to be paid, the prospect of bringing Willems back to NUFC is a low-risk, high-reward move if he can get over his injury troubles.

The 27-year-old quickly became a fans favourite in his short spell, as several members of the Toon Army practically begged for him to be signed on a permanent deal once his loan expired.

Willems did well during his time in the top flight, winning no fewer than 5.1 of his duels a game, as well as averaging two clearances, 1.9 tackles and 1.1 successful dribbles per match (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, the left-back could certainly be a useful player to have around in the squad.

Rob Lee claims Shelvey doesn’t have to run

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 343 appearances for Newcastle United, has claimed that Jonjo Shelvey is in the team to do things other than run about the pitch.

During an episode of Zoom Army, a series on Newcastle’s YouTube channel, Shelvey was asked by a fan why he was so lazy which saw the stand-in captain claim his running stats said otherwise.

The £70,000-per-week midfielder is more known for his passing ability, something that often left Rafa Benitez awestruck during his time at the club.

Speaking on how Shelvey is not in the team to run about the pitch and what he really brings to the team, Lee exclusively told FFC:

“I think he probably runs but doesn’t sprint, but he probably covers a lot of ground. I’m not a believer in stats because Jonjo Shelvey is not in the team to run around and close people down.

“Jonjo Shelvey has great passing ability and on his day his passing is as good as anybody so I’d say he is probably one of the best passers in the league.”

Shelvey signed in January 2016, which was to be only months before Newcastle were relegated to the Championship. However, the former Liverpool midfielder stuck with the club and helped get them promoted at the first time of asking.

The England international has been handed the captain’s armband while Jamaal Lascelles is recovering from an injury that could keep him out for several weeks.
