    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Nerazzurri are not the only team from Serie A to show interest in the 22-year-old, however. City rivals AC Milan, reigning Italian champions Napoli and Turin giants Juventus are all said to be eager to bring him to the Italian top-flight.

There is even stronger interest in the attacker, though, as Real Madrid and Barcelona are both said to be keeping an eye on him.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The interest in Gimenez is no surprise given his impressive form in Netherlands with Feyenoord. He has scored 13 goals in 10 Eredivisie games this season and fired two past Lazio in his Champions League debut as the Rotterdam side ran out 3-1 winners against the Roman club.

He ended his debut season in the Eredivisie with 15 goals in 32 matches in the top-flight and added another five in nine Europa League appearances.

The best Premier League fantasy football midfielders for 2023-24

Prolific wide-forwards, and creative midfielders who love a late run into the box are the order of the day in terms of savvy FPL picks.

Wondering who could the best Fantasy Premier League midfield picks for 2023-24? (including summer transfers) You've come to the right place.

Midfielders are more likely to get goals and assists and earn an extra point for a goal compared to forwards, plus the extra point for keeping a clean sheet. They are also highly likely to be 'captainable' options than players in other positions.

Explosive wingers who cut inside are constantly in demand, as are playmakers who can not only get assists but earn a goal themselves with late runs into the box. There are some great value midfield options from every price point: budget enablers, mid-priced picks, and premium options.

With the game now open for another season, GOAL has a list of the top midfielders to help you pick the strongest and most productive possible squad.

GettyMohamed Salah | Liverpool | £12.5m

Liverpool's Egyptian king Mohamed Salah(239 points in 2022/23) was the highest-scoring midfielder on FPL once again last season after coming out on top of the list and will be eager to defend his 'midfield' crown.

Despite the Reds underperformance last season, Salah posted incredible numbers with 19 goals and 12 assists in the Premier League, and there's no reason why he can't repeat the same feat in the new season.

Liverpool are one of the best-attacking teams in the league and have been for a good few years. The Reds have also bolstered their midfield ranks with the exciting additions of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, couple this with the fact that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be playing more as a playmaker next term, Salah's potential for both scoring and setting up goals will be as high as ever in 2023-24.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesKevin De Bruyne | Manchester City | £10.5m

Kevin De Bruyne was once again the king of assists last season, mostly sent in the direction of Erling Haaland. 16 in the Premier League, six in the Champions League, and four in the FA Cup.

With 10 goals and a mind-boggling 31 assists to his name in all competitions last season, the Belgium playmaker was the driving force behind City's treble despite making a slow start.

Although he is still recovering from that hamstring tear, and this may impact the start of the 2023-24 campaign, he has come back strongly from injuries before and is still at the top of his game in a very dominant City team, so we should expect similar numbers from him as last term.

Getty ImagesMarcus Rashford | Manchester United | £9.0m

Last season, Marcus Rashford rediscovered his scoring boots as he spent plenty of time up top, recurring injuries to Anthony Martial, the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and some not-so-prolific displays from Wout Weghorst seeing Erik ten Hag turn to the 25-year-old to spearhead the Manchester United attack on several occasions.

Only five players scored more Premier League goals than Rashford last season, with the England international finding the net 17 times and hitting a double-century for FPL points for the first time. Indeed, this sort of goalscoring exploits have led to a steep price rise from starting last season at £6.5m to £9m.

Still not reclassified as a forward, and United are unlikely to buy an elite striker due to FFP issues this summer, Rashford will surely have plenty of opportunities to reach the same heights in the upcoming campaign.

Son Heung-Min | Tottenham Hotspur | £9.0m

Following a 23-goal season in which he shared the Golden Boot with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Son began 2022/23 with his highest-ever opening price of £12.0m. However, the South Korean produced only 10 goals, six assists and 152 points.

The plummet in Son's price is therefore understandable, but the arrival of former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou – who is expected to deploy an expansive 4-3-3 system– and the addition of creative midfielders James Maddison may make him too appealing to pass up, especially with teammate Harry Kane's price climbing to £12.5 million.

If Son can get back to his best under Postecoglou, he will offer incredible value across the season.

VARchester United! Have Solskjaer's side really been helped by referees?

Fans of rival clubs believe that the Red Devils have benefited from preferential treatment this season, so Goal has reviewed all 19 of their penalties

Not since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson have we heard so much talk about Manchester United getting preferential treatment off referees.

Social media has been running wild with talk of 'VARchester United' and 'Man Utd Penalty Bingo' because of how many spot-kicks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have been awarded this season.

However, even Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has voiced his concern over the number of decisions that seem to be going United's way.

But are United really receiving help from the officials?

Below, we review all 19 penalties awarded to the Red Devils this season to see whether there's anything to these conspiracy theories…

1FA Cup: Man Utd 1-3 Chelsea

Callum Hudson-Odoi blatantly tripped Martial as United tried in vain to get themselves back into the semi-final showdown at Wembley.  Fernandes fired home but it was little more than a consolation goal for United as their hopes of FA Cup glory went up in smoke.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

2Premier League MD34: Aston Villa 0-3 Man Utd

The most controversial decision of the season? It was certainly a historic one, as United equalled the record for most penalties received in a single Premier League season (13). Jon Moss pointed to the spot after Fernandes had been upended by Ezri Konsa in the area. However, on closer inspection, it emerged that the attacking midfielder had actually initiated the contact. However, VAR inexplicably agreed with Moss, clearing the way for Fernandes to open the scoring. Villa boss Dean Smith called it a "disgraceful" decision and his fury was understandable.

    Verdict: NO PENALTY!

    3Premier League MD33: Man Utd 5-2 Bournemouth

The game at Old Trafford was tied at one goal apiece when Mike Dean pointed to the spot in the 35th minute, after noticing an Adam Smith handball. Rashford took care of the rest as United went on to record an impressive victory.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

    4Premier League MD30: Tottenham 1-1 Man Utd

Eric Dier was bamboozled by Paul Pogba's neat footwork and bundled the Frenchman over in the box. Fernandes scored from the spot to salvage a point for United.

    Verdict: PENALTY!

N.B. Jon Moss awarded United a penalty in the dying minutes for another perceived foul on Pogba by Dier but the referee was correctly overruled by VAR.

BCCI selector, media manager cleared of conflict charge

The BCCI ombudsman Justice AP Shah has ruled that there is no conflict of interest case that can be established against national selector Vikram Rathour and the board’s media manager Nishant Arora

The BCCI ombudsman Justice AP Shah has ruled that there is no conflict of interest case that can be established against national selector Vikram Rathour and the board’s media manager Nishant Arora.Shah had responded to an application filed by freelance journalist Niraj Gunde who had alleged that Rathour, who holds a Britsh passport, was conflicted in his loyalty towards the BCCI. In Arora’s case, Gunde pointed out to Shah that Arora and his wife were involved in a commercial venture called Final Score that has on its clients list senior Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, as well as the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Assocation, of which BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur is president. However, Shah dismissed allegations of conflict of interest in both cases. The ombudsman told Gunde there was no rule in Indian law or within the BCCI’s rules on conflict of interest that Rathour, by virtue of holding a British passport as well as an overseas citizen of India card, had breached. “The Ombudsman does not agree with the applicant’s (Gunde) contentions. There is no bar, in law or in the memorandum of association of the BCCI, to Rathour’s association with the BCCI as a selector, by virtue of his holding an OCI card,” Shah wrote in an email to Gunde.”The Ombudsman also does not accept the argument that conflict of interest is apparent in such a case. In sum, no rule pertaining to conflict of interest is attracted, nor is any case of conflict of interest demonstrated. The application is therefore disposed of.”According to Gunde, Arora had violated the conflict of interest rule pertaining to the BCCI employees, which states neither he nor his near relative can be associated in any commercial venture with a member association and also cannot represent a cricket player. However, Shah did not agree with that contention. An email sent to from the Ombudsman’s office stated that, “Mr Arora’s wife does not hold any directorial post at Final Score. It appears that all shares owned by Mr Arora, his wife and his mother, in Final Score, were liquidated on December 2015, before this application was made by the Ombudsman.”The applicant Mr Gunde was offered an opportunity to respond to Mr Arora’s reply but no further response was received. It is evident that Mr Arora’s claims are not contradicted. The application no longer stands, and is, therefore disposed of.”

TABELA

Elgar, Wiese power Titans to final

ScorecardFile photo: Dean Elgar scored a patient century on a tough pitch•Gallo Images

Titans were set to take on Cobras in the final of the Momentum One-Day Cup for the second consecutive year after a comfortable 58-run win against Dolphins in Durban.Dean Elgar and David Wise starred with the bat, playing contrasting innings that led Titans to a strong total on a challenging pitch. Opting to bat, Titans were in early trouble at 8 for 2 but Elgar led the revival along with Jacques Rudolph. The two added 78 for the third wicket before Rudolph was dismissed. Elgar continued to graft, reaching his half-century off 76 balls and went on to complete his third List A century in the last over of the innings. However, it was Wiese’s innings that boosted Titans’ late surge. He struck five fours and five sixes in an unbeaten 33-ball 71 that helped Titans rack up 109 runs in the last 10 overs.Dolphins suffered early blows in their chase and were reduced 52 for 4 in the 14th over. With Juan de Villiers, Albie Morkel and Junior Dala making regular strikes, Dolphins did not recover from the start and were bowled out in the 45th over. The final is scheduled to be played on Friday, February 13 in Cape Town.
