Rajasthan end run of losses with big win

Rajasthan Royals’ batting fired collectively to break a run of four consecutive losses and consign Kings XI Punjab to their fourth defeat in five home games this season

The Report by Abhishek Purohit05-May-2012Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShane Watson scored a quick 36 and took two wickets•AFP

Rajasthan Royals’ batting fired collectively to break a run of four consecutive losses and consign Kings XI Punjab to their fourth defeat in five home games this season. Royals blazed away at the start after Rahul Dravid chose to bat on a greenish pitch, slowed down in the middle and picked up the pace at the death to post the highest total at Mohali this season.Their bowlers kept the home batsmen under pressure from the outset, and at no stage did Kings XI threaten to chase successfully, something which had been achieved in the four previous games at Mohali.Royals’ batsmen had been guilty recently of easing off after strong starts to post inadequate scores. Just when it looked today that the flurry of boundaries upfront from Dravid and Shane Watson would dissipate into another middling total, Brad Hodge and Johan Botha cracked 27 off the last two overs to ensure Royals finished close to the 180-mark which they were aiming for. When Dravid and Watson were pounding the Kings XI attack in their contrasting styles, Royals would have eyed 200. The duo took control after the in-form Ajinkya Rahane fell early to Ryan Harris. Dravid, enjoying the pace and bounce on the true pitch, launched an array of orthodox strokes, clipping and cover-driving Harris for three consecutive boundaries in the fourth over. Watson did it his way, powering Parvinder Awana down the ground for two fours and a six in consecutive balls in the sixth. The stand was worth 69 off 39 deliveries by the time Watson mishit Piyush Chawla to long-off. Dravid had already started to slow down. After breezing to 27 off 16, he managed 19 off the next 23 before slicing a drive off Harris to third man.Ashok Menaria, batting ahead of Hodge and Botha, hit Chawla for consecutive sixes, but could not capitalise on a dropped catch when on 29, to fall for 34 off 27. From 76 for 1 in the eighth over, Royals had meandered to 133 for 4 after 16.Hodge and Botha, though, were around for a final push. Azhar Mahmood was taken for 16 in the penultimate over and Harris, despite taking two more wickets, conceded 11 in the 20th.Faced with a stiff asking-rate right from the start, Kings XI needed Shaun Marsh and David Hussey to contribute. Watson began with a wicket-maiden, getting rid of Mandeep Singh.Shaun Tait, playing his first game of the season, proved difficult to score off with his combination of extreme pace, late swing and rare accuracy. With the overseas bowlers difficult to get away, Hussey tried to go after Siddharth Trivedi in the eighth over but only mishit a pull for Hodge to take a fine sliding catch running in from long-on.A thin line-up meant Marsh was Kings XI’s only realistic hope left, but he departed in the next over, stepping out to Botha but just managing to york himself. The asking-rate was almost eleven by this time, and long before formalities ended, Royals had ensured they would remain afloat this season.

'We also won 2-0 in India'

India continue to keep bringing up their home record in response to their back-to-back 0-4 whitewashes in England and Australia

Sidharth Monga at Adelaide Oval28-Jan-2012India continue to keep bringing up their home record in response to their back-to-back 0-4 whitewashes in England and Australia. The moment the question about the whitewashes was asked, Virender Sehwag shot back even before it could be finished, “We also won 2-0 in India.”Sehwag didn’t see a big difference in the way the team has been performing, just that the “time is not good”. “Everybody is practising hard at home, and then we came here and practised really hard,” he said. “We make our own plans, and it didn’t click. It happens with every team, with every player. The time is not good for Indian team, for individuals, so maybe that’s why we are not scoring runs.”The moment the time changes, the next year we will see, or in the coming series, we will see our top order giving starts and middle order coming in and score big hundreds. It happens. If I am making any plans I won’t tell you guys. I will go and execute in the ground rather than telling you.”Sehwag said this is the same team that has been doing well for the last few years. “Our batting has been the same for last couple of years,” he said. “We were doing well in 2007, 2008, 2009. We performed really well as a team and as a batting unit. But unfortunately we didn’t do well in these two series. We were looking forward to these series and suddenly didn’t do well and we let down our team. It’s individual responsibility to go out there and play for themselves and play for the team. And to make sure we end up with a good total of at least 300 or 400, and then our bowlers can do the job. So it’s disappointment for everybody.”Sehwag also revealed that the fan and media reaction might have got to the team. “They should be upset with our performances, and I agree with them,” he said. “But this is the time the fans should back the team, back the players. When we won the World Cup everybody was happy, and everybody was cheering for India.Virender Sehwag: “It’s important for an opener to do well overseas, and I haven’t done well.”•Getty Images”Now is the time we need the support from fans and everybody. They should back their own team. Which [is what] every media did. Even England media or Australia media or South Africa media, they back their teams. They criticise in such a manner that the player will not go down. They criticise their performances but they don’t criticise in such a manner that the team will go down when they read the articles and see the television.”Sehwag said it was unfair to say that the India team didn’t care about these defeats. “It’s very unfair. Everybody cares about their performance. We are very passionate about the game, and we are passionate about the team. It’s a shame if somebody is writing like that, saying like that. If you lose the game, you should go out there and work it out and what went wrong and come back and perform well in next game. We are trying that, but it is not happening. It doesn’t mean that we are happy to lose.”Sehwag said there were no technical flaws with the Indian batsmen, who he said were the main reason why India went down. “I don’t think technically there is a fault,” he said. “Nobody was working on their technical thing because they think they have played enough cricket and they have experience and they can handle. I think they realised they were making mistakes, and they were trying to not make the same mistakes in the next games.”Sehwag accepted responsibility for his failures overseas. He has not scored a century outside the subcontinent in four years. “It’s important for an opener to do well overseas, and I haven’t done well. So I need to look at myself and make a good plan for the next time I go overseas. That’s true.”Sehwag was asked if Indian cricket needed the kind of review Australia went through after their Ashes defeat last year. “We have to look at ourselves. What went wrong with us. And then we have to take a call.” When asked what kind of review it should be, Sehwag focussed more on the individual than a systemic overhaul.”It’s an individual thing,” he said. “I haven’t performed well overseas, I haven’t scored a hundred overseas for the last couple of tours. I have to look at myself and see what I need to do when I go to Australia or England or South Africa or New Zealand. It’s my personal thing. Nothing related with the team.”The general refrain, though, remained that India didn’t need big changes. “Because we were playing the same team in the last couple of years and we became the No. 1 team with the same batting line-up, the same bowling line-up.”

Hamilton-Brown sets up Surrey triumph

Rory Hamilton-Brown played a captain’s innings as Surrey signed off a successful season with silverware at Lord’s by claiming the Clydesdale Bank 40

Rory Hamilton-Brown played a captain’s innings as Surrey signed off a successful season with silverware at Lord’s by claiming the Clydesdale Bank 40. In a season so blighted by the weather it was somewhat fitting that rain played a part with Surrey’s target reduced to 186 off 30 overs and they won with 15 balls to spare to leave Somerset as bridesmaids for the fifth time in two seasons.Surrey were equal with the Duckworth-Lewis target when rain arrived after 5.5 overs despite losing Jason Roy the ball before they went off. They resumed for another seven balls before the rain returned and from there on Surrey were always ahead of the game. When play resumed Somerset removed Tom Maynard to give them some hope, but Hamilton-Brown remained calm with 78 off 62 balls. Crucially, Hamilton-Brown had been dropped off the third ball of the innings when he pulled to midwicket but Murali Kartik spilled the chance. Defending 214, as they were at that point, Somerset had to take every chance. Then, as the innings approach the 20-over cut-off, which guaranteed a result before the reserve day, Nick Compton missed a chance to run out the Surrey captain although even then Somerset would have remained behind. Chris Schofield played an important hand in a 58-run stand until he fell to Alfonso Thomas and when Hamilton-Brown run out by a direct hit from Jos Buttler there was a hint of pressure. The running became frenetic but Somerset missed three opportunities to hit the stumps and the constant head-in-hands summed up their day as Zander de Bruyn, whose experience is vital in a young Surrey team, and Matthew Spriegel, one of the key players in the one-day side, finished the job. It meant Surrey had secured their first trophy since the 2003 Twenty20 Cup and first victory in a Lord’s final since 2001. The hard work of the last couple of seasons at The Oval is starting to bring rewards.Somerset, on the other hand, will continue to wonder what they have to do to break their trophy drought, although on this occasion the answer is fairly simple as they slumped to 79 for 5 having chosen to bat first. That they got as far as 214 was down to Buttler who produced a mature 86 off 72 balls to enhance an already formidable reputation. On what was another good day for young, English talent – following last night’s performance from Jonny Bairstow in the one-day international – Jade Dernbach bagged 4 for 30. Given that he and Buttler (along with Craig Kieswetter) made a late-night dash back from Cardiff they were commendable efforts.Somerset’s innings was a story of wasted starts as five batsmen fell between 10 and 16. Having been forced to field first, not their preferred method, Surrey stuck to their plan of opening with spin as Spriegel bowled the first over. Marcus Trescothick, playing with an injured ankle, managed a couple of boundaries but then ran past a delivery and was comfortably stumped. Somerset’s talisman was gone.Kieswetter, meanwhile, never looked settled during his 23-ball stay which ended with a big top edge and the short ball worked again when Peter Trego top-edged a flick to long leg and the power-hitting top order had been dispatched. James Hildreth played all over a delivery from Schofield as the spinners continued to play a key role, then Compton’s missed reverse sweep and Craig Meschede’s leading edge left Somerset 146 for 7.Buttler, though, was outstanding as he pushed his case for a spot on the one-day tour to India. His fifty came off 48 balls and as the innings drew to a close – and the batting Powerplay was taken – he started to expand his strokeplay as he uppercut Dernbach over third man for the first six of the innings. Somerset, however, needed more than one innings of substance. On Sunday night they board a plane for Hyderabad and the Champions League, but the domestic season ends with a host of familiar questions being asked.

Solanki on brink of first ton for a year

Vikram Solanki’s fourth consecutive half-century in the County Championship kept resurgent Worcestershire on track in their bottom-of-the-table Division One clash with Hampshire at New Road

18-Jun-2011
Scorecard
Vikram Solanki’s fourth consecutive half-century in the County Championship kept resurgent Worcestershire on track in their bottom-of-the-table Division One clash with Hampshire at New Road.On a rain-interrupted opening day, two former county captains went head to head in the final session. Solanki, unbeaten on 99 in his highest innings of the season, negotiated a testing spell by Dimitri Mascarenhas before the home side closed on 250 for 4 from 69.4 overs.Solanki and Daryl Mitchell built up a position of strength in a second-wicket stand of 100 in 25 overs and the only blip for Worcestershire came after tea when Mascarenhas and Imran Tahir brought Hampshire back into contention.Tahir is now in a second spell with the south coast county and a lot has happened in his career since he left the Rose Bowl to spend last summer with Warwickshire, where he won a Clydesdale Bank 40 medal when taking five wickets in the final. In the winter the Pakistan-born leg spinner completed his qualification for South Africa and appeared for his adopted country in the World Cup before he was named International Newcomer of the Year at their annual awards night.A fractured thumb delayed his Hampshire comeback and after resuming in the Twenty20 competition, he made a first impact in the championship by breaking only the fourth century partnership for Worcestershire since their promotion last September.Mitchell’s first half-century of the season took him to 60 with seven fours – including three in an over from former Worcestershire seamer Kabir Ali – before he was caught at point off Tahir. Mascarenhas quickly followed up this breakthrough when Moeen Ali propped forward and edged to wicketkeeper Nic Pothas to give the medium-pacer his second success of the day.His earlier dismissal of Matt Pardoe, given out leg-before after making 11, was his first Championship wicket since September 2009, a period in which he missed almost all of last season because of an ankle injury. While Pardoe and Mitchell took until the 14th over to reach double figures, Solanki lifted the tempo straight away with his flashing drives, mostly through the off-side.Recalled paceman James Tomlinson became a particular target as he conceded 23 runs in four overs in his first championship spell of the season, and on reaching 50 Solanki planted a loose delivery from Tahir over the mid-wicket fence.By the close Worcestershire were in control as Solanki and Alexei Kervezee, who registered the quickest 50 from 53 balls, saw off Tahir and Mascarenhas. Kervez was eventually out in the last over, caught at point off Liam Dawson for 55, after the fourth pair had completed the second century of the day, putting on 108 from 27 overs.

Leeds: Marsch faces an uncertain future

With Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United currently staring down the barrel of relegation from the Premier League, whether or not the 48-year-old manager remains at the club in the event of the Whites dropping down to the second tier appears very much up for debate.

Indeed, this question was posed to the American in a recent press conference, with the former RB Leipzig head coach appearing to suggest that he was not brought into the club by Victor Orta to simply oversee the remaining fixtures of the season, but rather to build a project at Elland Road.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

Regarding his future in LS11 beyond the end of the current campaign, Marsch said: “I am so focused on what we are doing right here, right now. My vision was not 12 games. It’s over years. The first step is staying in the Premier League. The club deserves it and the club has earned it. But we have to earn it in the moment right now.”

However, despite the 48-year-old’s rather optimistic outlook, the fact remains that, should Leeds find themselves playing Championship football next season – an outcome which, following the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday, is now a 65% probability – he will have failed in what will undoubtedly the primary objective given to him by Orta and Andrea Radrizzani back in March.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Phil Hay suggested that securing survival for the Whites is the only real way the American can back up his positive outlook concerning his future, with the journalist writing:

“He is nine games in and you cannot tell at this stage if you are seeing all of the coach or the man, which creates confusion over whether to be convinced or perplexed by some of what he is saying. Gandhi won’t get Leeds United out of trouble and neither will Mother Theresa. Marsch, on the other hand, can. It is an essential first step in proving he can walk the walk.”

Indeed, despite Leeds’ brief upturn in form following Marsch’s arrival at the club, results in recent weeks, as well as individual player performances – have been well below par, rendering Sunday’s meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion a must-win game if the Whites are to remain a Premier League side heading into 2022/23.

However, aside from deciding the club’s immediate future, the visit of the Seagulls could also determine whether or not Marsch will fulfil his prophecy of spending a number of years at Elland Road – as a defeat against Graham Potter’s outfit will force both Orta and Radrizzani into making a decision as to whether the 48-year-old is the man who they want to lead the Whites into a campaign in the second-tier of English football.

And, in the event of relegation, while it is true that a number of the current playing staff – including the likes of Rodrigo and Mateusz Klich – should be moved on this summer, we at Football FanCast also believe it would be wise to axe the £80k-per-week American, as the 48-year-old once again appears to be “out of his depth.”
