Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs sell Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton

Southampton have signed Kyle Walker-Peters from Tottenham Hotspur, with former Saints captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg heading in the opposite direction.

Walker-Peters, 23, has left north London for St Mary’s for a reported fee worth £12m after initially arriving on loan in January.

The full-back started the last two Premier League games of the season, helping Southampton beat Bournemouth and Sheffield United in the process.

He was famously part of the England U20 international squad who won the World Cup in 2017, but fell out of favour with Spurs boss Jose Mourinho after appearing to take a potshot at the Portuguese in an interview at the start of the year.

Walker-Peters, who is reportedly best friends with Dele Alli, made 24 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring one goal and supplying five assists in all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

He has signed a five-year deal with the Saints, having spent the second half of last season on loan at St Mary’s.

The academy graduate featured for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in all of their top flight games following the Premier League restart as Southampton surged to an 11th-placed finish.

He told the club’s official website “I’m delighted to have signed here. The last few months on loan have been great for me and a lot of fun too. I’ve really enjoyed my football, the atmosphere here and also the style of play.”

“The club definitely fits the way I like to play, and I hope that people were able to see that during the last month or so of the season.

“I feel like I’ve already developed in the time I’ve been here, and that’s a big part of wanting to stay too. Obviously, it’s a club with a great reputation for improving young players and, personally, I’ve found it really valuable working under the manager, with his ideas on the game and what he expects from you as an individual.

“I think the way we finished the season gives us real optimism about where we’re heading too, and it just feels like a really good place for me to keep developing as a player and make the best out of what I have.”

The Portuguese now has a problem he urgently needs to address, as his departure has left Spurs short of options. Serge Aurier remains the club’s only designated right-back, but his future remains uncertain, amid interest from AC Milan.

While Walker-Peters has played well since the restart, he never managed to impress in the first team at his boyhood club. Daniel Levy can use the much-needed funds to find a suitable replacement in the summer.

Tottenham fans, do you think Levy has made the right decision letting Walker-Peters leave? Let us know down below!

Burnley: Nick Pope delivers self-deprecating response to winning Players’ Player of the Year prize

Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope was a double award winner at the club’s honours night for the 2019/20 season – even though he joked that one of those was wrongly given.

As per the club’s official website, he was named as Burnley’s Player of the Year while also winning the Players’ Player of the Year prize.

Reflecting on the latter award when speaking to Lancashire Live, the 28-year-old said: “I don’t know if them lot know too much about football if they voted for me but I will take it! We have a good set of lads in the dressing room so to get their approval and get their vote means a lot to me.”

Despite what Pope might say, he was a deserving recipient of both awards considering how brilliantly he played last season. He ended the Premier League season with 15 clean sheets, falling just one short of Manchester City’s Ederson in the race for the Golden Glove.

Plenty of those shutouts were hard-earned, too – the England international made 120 saves in the league throughout the season, the fourth-most of any goalkeeper in the top flight, so it wasn’t as if he had the luxury of playing for a freewheeling outfit and rarely being called upon.

One of those saves came from a Jamie Vardy penalty in January when Burnley, who were then on a four-match losing streak which left them 15th, came from behind to beat high-flying Leicester 2-1.

Having gone on to lose just two of their 16 subsequent league games (one against a rampant Manchester City, the other an inconsequential final day loss to Brighton), it’s not hard to see why Sean Dyche and Sky Sports pundit Matt Murray both referenced that moment against the Foxes as a seminal moment in the Clarets’ season, which ended with them basking in a top-half finish.

The double awards for Pope are not the only indicator of just how tremendous a season he enjoyed – transfer speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea, who will be in the Champions League next term, offers a clue as to how high his reputation has soared.

It is with good reason, too, considering the numbers he posted in 2019/20. While his self-deprecating remarks hint at a modest, grounded character, it shouldn’t be too hard to see why Pope was honoured by his team-mates as the pick of the Turf Moor crop for last season.

Spurs fans react as Sergino Dest is linked with summer switch

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with just about every right-back potentially available and this week, new reports have emerged on a fresh new target.

According to Calciomercato, Spurs are keen on landing Ajax starlet Sergino Dest this summer but will face stiff competition from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich who Sky Sport believe are the front-runners to land the teen.

And it appears as if many in north London would be thrilled by the signing – if they can complete it, of course.

The 19-year-old has played 36 times in all competitions for the Eredivisie side this campaign where he has scored two goals and provided six assists, even playing on the left-hand side of defence on three occasions, via Transfermarkt.

Whilst it remains to be seen how much Dest would cost Spurs, he is currently valued at £16.2m. Reports in Holland have suggested that €25m (£22m) might be enough to tempt Ajax into a sale, though.

A true test for any Spurs fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

He’s also averaging 1.8 tackles, 1.3 dribbles and 0.9 shots per game this term, via WhoScored, which suggests he is the sort to get up and down the wing to contribute at both ends successfully.

Here’s what the Spurs faithful have been saying about the young American…

Man Utd fans buzzing with update on Paul Pogba’s future

It was the transfer saga that dominated the headlines last summer, Paul Pogba’s potential exit from Manchester United was a long, drawn-out process. The France World Cup winner opened the door to a move away from Old Trafford after claiming that he was up for a “new challenge”, and that there was a question mark over his long-term future at the club. But a move to the likes of Real Madrid or Juventus failed to materialise, and he continues to be a United player. Now, The Times have claimed that Pogba is very much a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side’s plans, and that there is a feeling within the club that it’s actually his agent, Mino Raiola, who is pushing for a transfer out, rather than the midfielder himself. After hearing about the update on the Frenchman’s future, United fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

Some United supporters turned their attentions to Raiola, and insisted that he’s the real problem here. A couple of fans even called on Pogba to sack his agent, and that it wouldn’t make sense for him to become “unfocused” because of him.

One fan however just admitted that they are sick and tired of the “circus” surrounding Pogba, and that whilst the midfielder has lots of quality, he doesn’t have the “attitude to apply it”, and urged the club to move on.

It’s certainly a reasonable point to make, particularly when you consider this season that the Frenchman’s ‘injury’ and his supposed return from it always seemed to be one of the main talking points during a press conference with Solskjaer, and that kind of distraction would have done nothing to help the United boss or the rest of the first-team squad.

With Pogba still injured at the time of Bruno Fernandes’ arrival from Sporting CP back in the January transfer window, United fans still haven’t had a taste of what could potentially be a mouth-watering midfield partnership.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Compared to last summer, there has been less talk of a Pogba exit, and that bodes well for the club’s chances of keeping him at Old Trafford.

And if he focus on his career at United, then Solskjaer could be looking forward to using a very exciting midfield.

Everton fans are split over Cenk Tosun contribution

Cenk Tosun’s late equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend earned him a spot in the Everton XI for Saturday’s clash with Southampton.

Indeed, the 28-year-old was named at the tip of the attack for the clash at St Mary’s, which the Toffees won 2-1 to pick up a vital three points.

According to WhoScored, Tosun had three shots and won two aerial duels against the Saints, but his overall contribution was quite limited.

And it was not too much of a surprise when head coach Marco Silva decided to replace the Turkey international in the 74th minute with the score at 1-1.

There were some Everton fans that were pleased with what they saw from the 6 ft centre-forward on the afternoon.

However, not everyone shared the same opinion as many others thought that Tosun struggled to contribute before being replaced.

It was a real mixed bag from the supporters regarding his overall performance, as shown by the tweets below:

Man City’s right-back battle in stark contract to Guardiola’s left-back dilemma

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Manchester City will clash with Liverpool this Sunday at Anfield in what is set to be the biggest game of the season so far. The Reds currently sit six points ahead of the champions and a win could put them nine points clear after just 12 games.

Pep Guardiola is going to need his best men at the ready and, with Liverpool in such relentless form, it will need to be a gargantuan performance to walk away from Merseyside with all three points. However, at left-back, it seems the Spaniard has a bit of a problem.

The injury to Oleksandr Zinchenko has ruled him out for up to a month, forcing him to miss crucial games such as Liverpool and perhaps even the Manchester derby clash. In Zinchenko’s absence, the go-to man would usually be Benjamin Mendy. However, the Frenchman, who is finally injury-free, is struggling this season.

Mendy has often been caught out defensively and has averaged just 0.3 tackles in his three league games so far. Going forward, the 25-year-old has not made a key pass and averaged just 0.7 crosses each league fixture this season.

This has forced in Angelino, who has since taken his opportunity with both hands. The Spaniard made 118 touches against Southampton at the weekend, attempting 18 crosses and making one tackle. In truth, in the two games against the Saints, Angelino has looked a lot more of a threat than Mendy, however, he is not well versed in titanic Premier League clashes.

Up against Mohamed Salah at Anfield, the last thing Guardiola is going to want to do is to field an inexperienced player to nullify his threat.

Salah has 59 goals over the past three Premier League season – more than anybody else in the division. As a result, the Liverpool man will be licking his lips at facing such an inexperienced man in Angelino, but the alternative option in Mendy is also the type of player the Egyptian will feel he can get the better of.

The problem Guardiola faces is a stark contrast to his right-back situation, which is looking competitive and healthy this season.

Kyle Walker’s goal and assist in his game-winning display at the weekend provided a subtle reminder of his ability to the footballing world during a tough time for the full-back. Joao Cancelo, who joined the Citizens in a £27.6m summer deal, has stepped into the side of late and impressed, leaving some fans questioning Walker’s future at club level as well as international following his recent omission from two of Gareth Southgate’s England squads.

But Walker, who signed for £50m in 2017, doesn’t appear to be submitting to the challenge and his performance on Saturday attested to that.

Guardiola’s right-backs provide him with a desirable conundrum to unpick, but the left-back situation provides him with an altogether different dilemma as the champions prepare to face off with the fiercest challengers to their supremacy.

PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Player of the Month award – Premier League nominees for October

With the passing of Halloween, the spookiest period of the campaign is now over, and it was a month that certainly saw a few Premier League defenders receive a fright from some of the division’s best forwards.

Dangerous attackers such as Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez both hit hat-tricks in Leicester’s 9-0 win over Southampton on 25th October, ensuring that the Saints suffered an early Halloween scare six days before the big day.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace maintained their impressive campaign so far with a 2-2 draw against Arsenal, a game in which Granit Xhaka made the headlines for all the wrong reasons after his unprofessional gestures to the Emirates crowd.

Forget individual outbursts and collective efforts for a moment though – let’s take a look at the individuals nominated for the PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Player of the Month award for October…

Jack Grealish

Aston Villa’s captain enjoyed an impressive October in which he started to finally look at home in the Premier League.

Grealish netted a goal in the 5-1 demolition of Norwich at Carrow Road, while also proving to be the decisive influence in the 2-1 win over Brighton at Villa Park – the Villans No.10 scored the equaliser, and then set up Matt Targett’s stoppage-time winner.

David Silva

The experienced Manchester City playmaker scored two goals in three Premier League games throughout October.

Silva scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, and then found the back of the net once again in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium.

Ricardo Pereira

The Portuguese right-back has enjoyed an excellent campaign so far, continuing his fine 2018/19 form that saw him record eight goal involvements in the league.

Pereira didn’t actually score or assist in October, although he played a starring role in the 2-1 win over Burnley and in the aforementioned 9-0 win at St Mary’s.

Adama Traore

The mercurial Wolves wide man helped his side remain unbeaten throughout October, with some vital contributions.

Traore, formerly of Barcelona, scored both goals in the eye-catching 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, and also played every minute of the following 1-1 draws against Southampton and Newcastle.

Jamie Vardy

Leicester’s No.9 scored his seventh, eight and ninth Premier League goals of the campaign in the rout over Southampton, and also netted the winning goal in the 2-1 win over Burnley before the trip to St Mary’s.

Vardy now has nine goals in 10 league appearances this season.

Christian Pulisic

The USA international impressed throughout October for Chelsea, to say the least.

Pulisic – a USA international – started the month with an assist for Michy Batshuayi in the 4-1 win against Southampton, before playing a cameo role in the 1-0 win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

His most impressive showing came in the last league outing of the month though, when he scored a perfect hat-trick at Turf Moor in the 4-0 win over Burnley.

Leeds fans express concerns after Luke Ayling signs new deal

The contract news has yet again rolled out of Elland Road. In previous weeks Kalvin Phillips, Stuart Dallas and Liam Cooper signed new terms but now it’s Luke Ayling putting pen to paper.

Leeds confirmed the news on their Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon in the build-up to last night’s clash against West Brom.

Ayling played his first minutes under Marcelo Bielsa this term on Monday night but not playing before then doesn’t look as though it’s become an issue in negotiations.

The right-back played 40 times for Leeds last term and was an influential figure but concerns have still been expressed over his new contract.

Many supporters took to Twitter to discuss the announcement from the club as one declared they weren’t thrilled by all the long-term plans.

A further individual said the Whites were setting themselves up for problems in a few years while another said it was a tad crazy.

The 28-year-old has recently just stepped up his recovery from an injury by playing for the U23 side but he faces a job to get back into Bielsa’s plans.

Dallas has had an excellent term himself, one that’s seen him bag against Stoke and achieve an average match rating of 7.04 prior to the visit of the Baggies.

Here’s some of the debate.
