The attack seemed to have run out of ideas but the breakthrough came courtesy a run out. Cariah, who was also the pick of the West Indies attack, conceding 34 in his nine overs when his team-mates leaked runs, struck soon after to remove Dhanushka Gunathilleke.Rajakaruna fell six short of a well-deserved hundred and West Indies smelt an opportunity to stifle the momentum, but their hopes were dented by the in-form Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who struck an unbeaten 43. With Rumesh Buddika and, to a lesser extent Chatura Peiris, going for the big hits, Sri Lanka motored along in the last ten overs, with the final 91 runs coming in 53 balls. The target of 292 became more difficult when Peiris removed West Indies’ best batsman in the tournament, Kraigg Braithwaite, first ball, and in his second over took out Trevon Griffith. At that stage, Sri Lanka looked set to win the game, but Campbell and Cariah had other ideas. Campbell kept up the run-rate, hitting four sixes and six fours in his attractive 77 off 70 balls. When he fell in the 21st over, having added 120 runs in 111 balls with Cariah, West Indies were right back in it.Shane Dowrich ensured that the momentum stayed with them, adding 49 in 45 balls with Cariah, who had set his sights on batting through. Nadeera Rajaguru got the better of Dowrich and accounted for Yannick Oatley’s wicket soon after to stifle the West Indian charge. The match was on a knife-edge when Jermaine Blackwood joined Cariah and their partnership tilted the game decisively in West Indies’s favour. Blackwood hammered two fours and two sixes in his 45-ball 41 while Cariah eased to his century. Sri Lanka used eight bowlers with little success till Peiris came back to scalp Blackwood, in the process moving to joint-second in the bowling honours board for the tournament. It was too little too late, though, and Sri Lanka had to settle for the fourth spot.

The West Indies have received a major boost with Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, due to fly back to Australia in time for Thursday’s first Test. Gayle will leave the Caribbean on Monday after his mother was allowed to leave hospital following a serious heart problem.Gayle went home to Jamaica before the tour match last week to be with her and will face a disrupted preparation. He is due to land in Brisbane just a day before the three-game series begins. The news is still a huge help to the West Indies, who are rebuilding following a players’ strike and need another senior player to support Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the batting order. Gayle has been twittering while in the Caribbean and his last post confirmed his mother was fine. “As I tweet doc call an say she can leave tonight even better, just want to thank everyone for prayers an support an best wishes.”A West Indies team spokesman said: “Chris will rejoin the team so clearly that’s good news for everyone. We are happy his mum is doing well.”

We lost patience with Gibbs – Procter

Mike Procter, South Africa’s convener of selectors, has backed opener Herschelle Gibbs to bounce back after being dropped from the ODI and Twenty20 squads to face Zimbabwe and England at home next month. Procter explained that Gibbs’ inconsistency had cost him his place and added that his omission will leave the door open for experimentation at the top of the order.Gibbs failed to get going for the Cape Cobras in the Champions League Twenty20 in India, scoring just 43 runs in four games. He scored 42 of those in the semi-final against Trinidad and Tobago but prior to that, recorded two first-ball ducks.”We have lost patience with his inconsistency and I had a chat with him this morning and we agreed that he has been inconsistent,” Procter told . “We have to keep 2011 [the World Cup] in mind and we need to spread our wings a bit. But the door is not closed for Herschelle, although it will be tough for him. He is 35, but he is fit and he is a huge talent and if he makes a mountain of runs and is batting consistently then things change.”Procter said the team management had discussed the possibility of Jacques Kallis opening the batting with captain Graeme Smith, instead of Lions opening batsman Alviro Petersen, who was recalled to the squad. However, Procter added that the batting order was still flexible.”Mickey Arthur (the coach) and Graeme [Smith] want Jacques to open and AB [de Villiers] will then move up to three and JP Duminy to four,” Procter said. “We’re looking at Alviro at five. We know it’s out of position, but we believe he can adapt and he has been a prolific run-scorer in the last couple of seasons.”But we have so many options. Hashim Amla or Alviro could open if the Smith-Kallis partnership does not work and we’re also looking to take pressure off Albie Morkel in terms of his bowling. We’d like to take the responsibility of bowling ten overs off his shoulders and he can make up for it with the bat. We’d like to play him at six and use him as more of a pure batsman.”Charl Langeveldt also earned a recall after relinquishing his Kolpak status and Procter praised the fast bowler for making himself available for national selection. The uncapped allrounder Ryan McLaren, a proven performer with Kent, too dropped his Kolpak status and was named in the squads.”We’re absolutely thrilled to be able to choose Charl again,” Procter said. “He bowls very well at the death and he’s able to get both late and reverse swing.”

Cooley praises 'champion' Lee

Australia’s stand-in coach Troy Cooley has praised Brett Lee for his spirited comeback from injury after he skittled out five England batsmen in Saturday’s Lord’s ODI

Australia’s stand-in coach Troy Cooley has praised Brett Lee for his spirited comeback from injury after he skittled out five England batsmen in Saturday’s Lord’s ODI, and says there is more to come from him. Lee was forced to sit out all five Ashes Tests with a side strain but made a comeback on the one-day leg of the tour, saving his best performance of 5 for 49 in the series-winning match.”To see what he’s been through, when he broke his foot and came back again, then tear a side and get his fitness up and see him hit that top-end pace which we know he’s got and to sustain that, it’s obviously very pleasing for Brett and all of us,” Cooley told reporters.Lee crossed the 90mph mark regularly at Lord’s and constantly slipped in the inswinging yorker. Four of his five victims were bowled. Lee spoke confidently of crossing the 100mph mark and Cooley – also a fast-bowling coach – has backed him to achieve that feat.”As you can see [from his display at Lord’s], he has got the most ferocious inswinger in the game at the moment,” Cooley said. “He keeps saying it [crossing the 100mph mark], so we’re happy to keep pushing him up there. He is doing all the right things to make sure he is at full tilt whenever he can be, he is a champion.”We still think he’s got a little bit to go, he thinks he has a little bit more to go, so we’re happy to facilitate the development of that.”Lee narrowly missed out on selection for the first Ashes Test at Cardiff, which Australia failed to close out on the fifth day despite having England nine down. Former New South Wales and Australia wicketkeeper, Steve Rixon, believed Australia sorely missed a bowler of Lee’s ability in that game.”I know it was only a one-day game, but if he can produce a five to 10-over spell like that during a Test match, he has the pace and ability to swing the ball that changes the pattern of a game,” Rixon told the . “He can be a dangerous weapon.”There aren’t too many bowlers who can hit the base of the stumps that often. I know he was injured before the first Test in the Ashes [with a side strain], but if you take that game where we have 70-odd balls to get a final wicket, Brett would have been that person who can do that something special at the death.”Cooley is filling in for Tim Nielsen, who decided to head home to be with his family, and said he has no intentions of taking on a full-time coaching role with Australia.”It’s a caretaker role at the moment, I love my role within the fast bowling group. I have a great job back home with the fast-bowling programme, so I’ve got no eyes on taking ‘Vinny’s’ (Nielsen’s) job,” Cooley said. “It’s basically just to be able to make sure he can have a break and come back refreshed.”I’m very happy to be doing what I am at the moment and when Vinny said look after this team I said ‘Okay, only if it’s short-term’.”

Nottingham Forest fans on Taylor vs Luton

Many Nottingham Forest fans have been left slamming the display of Lyle Taylor in their 0-0 draw to Luton Town in the Championship on Tuesday night.

The striker endured yet another frustrating game in a Forest shirt, as he could not add to the three goals that he has only managed to score so far this season, and was subsequently hauled off in the 65th minute for Tobias Figueiredo.

Taylor did not put much of a fight up top, losing out on all six of his duels, as he also failed to record a single shot on target, dribble or key pass in the match, losing possession of the ball five times and even picking himself up an early booking midway through the first half (SofaScore).

These members of the City Ground faithful slammed his performance on Twitter, with one NFFC supporter even going as far as to claim that he is ‘dreadful’:

“Taylor really is a terrible striker. Tonight demonstrated how the poor depth of the squad is, when you see Taylor, Bong and Cafu on the pitch.”

“Drop your main striker to play a team we aren’t going to probably beat regardless then fail to beat Luton. I will never understand the logic. If Grabban was on that pitch that a different game. Taylor is dreadful”

Jadhav boosts India A to victory

India A registered an easy six-wicket win over Pakistan A in the final of the triseries in Kenya even as the same two teams clashed in Amstelveen in the opening match of the Videocon Cup. Dheeraj Jadhav (89) led the way with a magnificent innings as India scored 220 for 4 with more than two overs to spare.Gautam Gambhir (12), who has been in a rich vein of form, fell early, caught by Kamran Akmal off the bowling of Riaz Afridi (24 for 1). MS Dhoni, another cricketer scoring runs by the bucketful in this tournament, followed Gambhir to the pavilion soon after, giving Afridi his second wicket (44 for 2).From then on there was little joy for Pakistan as Jadhav and Sridharan Sriram put on 115 for the third wicket, and took the game away. Sriram scored freely, striking 7 fours in 63-ball 60. When Sriram fell, caught and bowled by Naved Latif, India A had already reached 159 from 31.3 overs.Jadhav, who faced 112 balls for his 89, and struck one six and seven fours in the process, fell even as India reached the doorstep of victory. In the 42nd over Jadhav succumbed to Rao Iftikhar Anjum with the score on 205. By then, though, an India A victory was a formality.Earlier, a splendid unbeaten 89 from Misbah-ul-Haq lifted Pakistan A after a dismal start, and took them to a competitive 209 for 7 from 47 overs. In a match briefly interrupted by bad light – which caused three overs to be reduced from the innings – Pakistan A wobbled early, but consolidated in the middle overs and finished with a flourish to leave the match interestingly poised at the half-way stage. The interruption left India A chasing a revised target of 220 even though Pakistan A made only 209.Misbah came to crease after both openers had gone with only 18 on the board, and when Bazid Khan and Faisal Iqbal left soon after, Pakistan A had slumped to 30 for 4 and were in danger of being bundled out for an embarrassingly low total. Misbah, however, led the recue act with his third successive half-century of the competition. He added 102 for the fifth wicket with Manzoor Amjad, who made a composed 48, while the lower order chipped in usefully too.For India, the seamers made excellent use of helpful conditions, and fully justified Sairaj Bahutule’s decision to field after winning the toss. Shib Sankar Paul and Amit Bhandari both got the ball to move off the seam, troubling all the top order batsmen, while Aavishkar Salvi, coming on first change, was at his niggardly best. However, Pakistan A wrested the initiative against the spinners – Bahutule, Sriram and Ramesh Powar collectively went for 118 runs from 19 overs. Misbah was circumspect to start with, but then showed a full array of strokes, cheekily reverse-sweeping Sriram for consecutive fours, and then paddling the seamers to the fine-leg fence in the last few overs, as Pakistan A got to a total which seemed improbable at the half-way stage of their innings.

Celtic: Soro’s value has plummeted

Peter Lawwell retired after 17 years as the chief executive of Celtic this year and left Parkhead having overseen countless title wins and trophy lifts with the Hoops.

Over the years, he was able to pull off some masterstrokes in the transfer market, bringing Virgil van Dijk to the club for example, but not every transfer works and one of his last pieces of business was to bring Ismaila Soro to Celtic in January 2020.

Soro was playing for Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv in Israel prior to arriving at Celtic, making 64 appearances for the club in three years after leaving Belarus-based outfit FK Gomel. His form in Tel Aviv seemingly prompted Lawwell and manager at the time, Neil Lennon, to take a gamble on him.

Celtic reportedly forked out a sizeable £2.07m for the defensive midfielder, which came as a phenomenal rise in value for him two years on from his move to Bnei Yehuda from Gomel. Transfermarkt valued him at £90k in January 2018, with Celtic paying a 2200% increase on that initial valuation.

This suggests that he was improving as a player and heading on an upwards trajectory in his career, which could be why Lawwell decided to pull the trigger on signing him. The young Ivorian may have been seen as a prospect who could develop at Celtic Park and either go on to become a top player for the club in the long-term or be sold on for profit, like the aforementioned van Dijk.

Unfortunately, Soro has been unable to kick on since arriving at Celtic Park, despite a positive first few months at the club. In the 2020/21 campaign, he completed 90% of his passes and made 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game for the Hoops in the Premiership. However, he only won 52% of his duels as a defensive midfielder, which meant that he was not dominating games in the middle of the park.

His form has taken a turn for the worse this term, with an average SofaScore rating of 6.63 in six Premiership appearances. He has made 1.4 tackles and interceptions per game, losing a whopping 64% of his duels on the pitch – including 75% of his ground battles.

Soro has started just once in the league, with the other five outings coming as a substitute, which shows that Ange Postecoglou does not trust him to play from the start. His horrific success rate in duels could be a major factor in his decision, with Soro failing to adjust to the physicality of the Premiership, allowing opposition players to come out on top of him more often than not.

At the time of writing (07/10/21), Soro’s market value on Transfermarkt is £810k. This means that his price has plummeted 60.8% from the £2.07m Celtic paid for his services less than two years ago, showing that Lawwell had a disaster with this piece of business as he overpaid for the 23-year-old.

Soro has not been able to establish himself in the starting XI and his value is continuing to drop as he flops on the pitch. The move, at this point in time, has not worked out and Postecoglou could have a decision to make on his future unless he turns things around quickly.

AND in other news, Ange must ruthlessly axe 26 y/o dud who left Celtic “livid”, he’s not good enough…

Derbyshire offer Australia match practice

Derbyshire have offered Australia a one-day match next week to help keep them active after their exit from the ICC World Twenty20.Australia, who were unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament on Monday after defeats by West Indies and Sri Lanka, have been left with no cricket for a fortnight before their Ashes tour opener against Sussex at Hove.”From a cricketing point of view, it would suit us nicely,” John Morris, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, said. However, it seems unlikely Australia will take them up on the offer, preferring instead to remain at their temporary base in Leicester and make full use of the net and gym facilities at Grace Road.

Ramon apresentou melhora e treinou nesta quarta.
