Saints fans unhappy at Tella news

Southampton fans were far from happy with the news that Ralph Hasenhuttl is set to use Nathan Tella as a striker this season rather than on the flanks.

After a slow start to the transfer window, the Saints have been very busy in recent weeks.

They have now brought in five new faces, two of which are strikers in Adam Armstrong and Armando Broja (Sky Sports). Even with the sale of Danny Ings to Aston Villa (avfc.co.uk), the Austrian still has plenty of options up front if you also include Che Adams, Shane Long and Michael Obafemi.

Tella is an up-and-coming player at St. Mary’s Stadium, having made 22 appearances for the club last term (Transfermarkt). He is mainly a right-winger, but Hasenhuttl has decided to use him as a centre-forward after the 22-year-old impressed in training (via The Athletic).

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

“we don’t need more strikers we’ve got some class ones. Tella’s pace on the left and skill is needed as he basically has everything but a consistent end product”

West Ham: Abraham wants to leave Chelsea

West Ham United have been given a potential boost in their pursuit of Tammy Abraham this summer…

What’s the word?

It’s thought that the out-of-favour Chelsea striker is amongst David Moyes’ top transfer targets as he looks to bolster his frontline ahead of the new campaign.

And now Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has delivered an encouraging update on the 23-year-old’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on his Twitch.tv channel on Monday night, Romano dropped the claim that he believes Abraham will leave the Blues this window as he wants regular game time on the pitch. He also added:

“I see Tammy Abraham leaving Chelsea this summer.”

Furthermore, according to Football Insider this week, the England international has been valued up to £40m by the Champions League winners, though it’s thought an initial £30m offer could be enough to seal a deal.

Moyes must strike

After this latest update, the East Londoners would be foolish to not push ahead with a bid for the forgotten Chelsea talisman.

Since Thomas Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard in January, Abraham was only utilised seven times in all competitions and despite that, he still finished amongst their top goalscorers in the Premier League, bagging one fewer than penalty-taker Jorginho (seven).

If he’s truly Moyes’ no.1 target, then it’s time for GSB to stump up the cash to sign him.

The Hammers have to be absolutely desperate to secure a new forward before the start of the new season, which is merely one month away when they travel to Newcastle United on the opening weekend.

Currently, Moyes will go into the 2021/22 campaign with just one senior striker to lead the line – as he has done since January this year – but that’s a risky game to play because Michail Antonio is yet to start more than 24 matches in any Premier League season. And that’s largely due to his injury problems.

Abraham has scored 30 goals in his 82 appearances in Chelsea shirt, whilst during loan spells in the Championship, he found the net 48 times in 78 matches – no wonder his former youth teammate Kasey Palmer once dubbed him “the goal machine”.

It’s evident that the West London academy graduate, who is currently valued at £36m by CIES Football Observatory, knows where the back of the net is.

Also lauded as “unbelievable” and “phenomenal” throughout his career, the 6 foot 3 talisman would help to instantly fill that void alongside Antonio and given Moyes’ previous success in the transfer market – namely the Jesse Lingard loan and swoops for Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek – he should be trusted to get the best out of Abraham at the London Stadium.

£30m to £40m is a substantial amount to splash on a new player but it’s the sort of signing a Europa League-bound side needs to make to stand a chance at remaining competitive.

West Ham must strike following this encouraging update from Romano. Abraham is surely there for the taking.

AND in other news, Hammers could now land £75k-p/w beast “in the coming days”, fans will be buzzing…

Troca melhor para quem? Giovanni e Valdívia têm números ruins. Compare

Spurs sources back Romero agreement

As per Charlie Eccleshare on Twitter, some Tottenham Hotspur sources ‘close to the deal’ are ‘confident’ an agreement can be reached to sign defender Cristian Romero.

The Lowdown: Spurs in Romero talks…

Tottenham have been in negotiations for Romero over this past week, with Sky Sports claiming that the Lilywhites have in fact stepped up their pursuit of the Argentine.

Spurs also allegedly made an offer of around £34m (€40m) plus £8.5m (€10) in bonuses – but managing director Fabio Paratici will not overpay for his services and has other targets as alternatives (Sky Sports).

A complete agreement is still yet to be reached on price as talks remain ongoing.

The Latest: Sources back agreement…

As per Eccleshare, sharing what he’s heard from some sources ‘close to the deal’, there are those who are apparently ‘confident’ a compromise will be settled when it comes to valuation.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As well as this, some of the journalist’s sources believe an agreement is ‘not too far away’, but as it stands, the two clubs remain apart in their price for the player.

Tottenham officially sold Toby Alderweireld to Qatari side Al Duhail earlier this week and need to seal his replacement with the transfer window deadline looming next month.

The Verdict: Get it done…

There are great alternatives to Romero, like Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic for instance, who Eccleshare believes would be a ‘straightforward deal’.

However, these extensive negotiations for the South American colossus could prove to be worth all of this trouble given his unbelievable performances in Serie A.

Romero was rewarded with the title of 2020/2021 best defender in the Italian top flight and has garnered praise from critics, with Serie A expert Conor Clancy calling him ‘phenomenal’ (This is Futbol).

At just 23-years-old, the centre-back also has plenty of years ahead of him, potentially marking him out as a real prime target.

Andre Adams on way home from Pakistan with suspected stress fracture

All-rounder Andre Adams is on his way home from Pakistan, the latest player to suffer a suspected stress fracture in the lumbar region of his back

Lynn McConnell05-May-2002All-rounder Andre Adams is on his way home from Pakistan, the latest player to suffer a suspected stress fracture in the lumbar region of his back.Adams, who last month helped bowl New Zealand to victory over England in the third Test to square the three-match series with England, did not play in the first Test against Pakistan which New Zealand lost by a record margin. He is to be studied by specialists in New Zealand before a final analysis is made of his condition but it now seems highly unlikely that he will be fit for consideration for New Zealand’s tour to the West Indies in June. That will be a big blow for Adams who has made no secret of the fact that he wanted to tour the West Indies, the homelands of his parents. With only the second Test remaining to be played on the tour no word has been forthcoming from New Zealand Cricket about a replacement player. The team has already lost Nathan Astle and Jacob Oram with injury problems which forced them home early.

Bull heaps praise on Patricio replacement, Danny Ward - Exclusive

After three successful seasons at Molineux it appears that Rui Patricio’s Premier League journey may be coming to an end, and thus,Wolves are now on the hunt for a new shot-stopper with Danny Ward being labelled as a very good goalkeeper by Wolves legend, Steve Bull.

Patricio has been linked with a move to Roma which would likely offer him a better chance of playing some European football and with a reported £10 million price tag on his head, Bruno Lage would likely bank that money to improve other areas of the pitch.

As it stands, John Ruddy is Wolves number two and with plenty of Premier League experience he would likely not be a bad option for next season but they have also been linked with Wales’ Euros hero, Ward.

The 28-year-old has had to be a back-up to Kasper Schmeichel at Leicester City which is a clear waste of his talents judging by his performances for Wales this summer, which has led to Bull claiming he is a top-class keeper, something he exclusively told Football FanCast:

“He’s energetic and a very good keeper who I watched the other night for Wales and he was pulling off great saves left, right and centre.”

Patricio has been Wolves’ undisputed number one since he arrived in the Midlands back in 2018 but with the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo and the potential to play under Jose Mourinho, this could be the time that the 33-year-old decides to move on.

The current Wolves number one proved he still has plenty left to offer on the pitch when he tipped Paul Pogba’s long range effort onto the post during Portugal’s crucial 2-2 draw in their final group stage match.

Deep Dasgupta's role a subject of debate

Should India continue to open the innings with Deep Dasgupta to allow one more batsman in the lower middle-order, or should they play Ajay Ratra as thewicket-keeper and provide Wasim Jaffer or Dinesh Mongia a chance to partner Shiv Sunder Das in

Special Correspondent16-Apr-2002Should India continue to open the innings with Deep Dasgupta to allow one more batsman in the lower middle-order, or should they play Ajay Ratra as thewicket-keeper and provide Wasim Jaffer or Dinesh Mongia a chance to partner Shiv Sunder Das in Tests? That is a big question now after Dasgupta failed once again as an opener at Guyana.Incidentally, in the seven Tests that Dasgupta has opened for India, never has India batted first. So on each occasion, he had to come to the wicket to bat after four or more sessions of wicket-keeping. When the opposition, furthermore, pile on more than 500 runs batting first, the strain of batting within just 10 minutes of leaving the field must be enormous for the young wicket-keeper.But Dasgupta, with an eye on cementing his place in the team, wants to carry on at the top of the order. He is intelligent enough to accept that his keeping alone cannnot earn him a place in the first eleven, so he is not ready to give up the challenging role. The team management is also backing him to succeed. He has scores of 13 and 63, 100 and 0*, 17 and 60, 0, 33, 19 and one, and 0 in his seven Tests as opener, aggregating 306 runs at an average of 30.60. That is not a bad record, but being the wicket-keeper seems to have affected his batting, especially in the last four Tests. That is why Geoffery Boycott says, “You should not allow the wicket-keepers to open the innings in Tests. It is inhuman sometimes, especially after two days of keeping wicket. They need rest, the muscles are pulled, movement of the feet is uncertain and reluctant. I will never advocate a wicket-keeper-opener in Tests.”Meanwhile his wicket-keeping continues to draw a lot of flak, with Ravi Shastri unhesitatingly blaming Dasgupta for letting Carl Hooper plunder adouble-hundred. When asked about it, Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was more than surprised. “You mean the nick he had at the beginning of Hooper’s innings? I don’t think even the best wicket-keeper in the world would have been able to catch that,” Ganguly observed. We saw how Kiran More dropped that infamous catch at Lord’s to allow Graham Gooch to score the famous 333 a decade ago. The chance offered by Hooperwas not anywhere as easy, but Shastri believes it had to be taken. When Michael Holding enquired whether there were no other wicket-keepers in India except Dasgupta, Shastri said, “At least five are there, but they are overlooked.”Sunil Gavaskar, for his part, said “I am not very much satisfied with Ratra too. I like Dasgupta’s attitude. He knows his limitations. Moreover, when he bats, he does not think of his `keeping and vice-versa. India could have played five specialist bowlers, and that opportunity was provided by Dasgupta.”But the team played an extra batsman, as the captain is aware that the batsmen have usually failed to live up to their potential on foreign soil. Dasgupta thus provided him the opportunity to play the extra bat. To blame Ganguly solely for adopting this strategy would not be fair, since India have, in the recent past, tried out as many as three wicket-keepers in the thankless job of opening in Test cricket - Nayan Mongia, MSK Prasad and Sameer Dighe – with the same intentions. Except for Mongia, who opened in 26 innings for 688 runs with an average of 26.46, the others did not succeed. At the moment, Dasgupta has a better average than any of them, but his second duck in 11 innings as an opener, has suddenly put a question-mark over hiscareer.
