Sam Northeast's lone fifty edges Hampshire ahead on 19-wicket day

ScorecardFor three seasons in a row Hampshire have escaped relegation from Division One by little more than a whisker, and Sam Northeast’s dogged 53 gave them a fighting chance of another great escape on a day that saw 19 wickets fall to seam at the Ageas Bowl.Going into last week’s game at New Road, Hampshire looked set to be sucked into the relegation mire yet again, but that win and their first-day efforts here will give them hope that the quagmire can be avoided without the same anxieties of previous years.Defeat here would almost certainly spell the death knell for Somerset’s Championship chances, but it would be foolish to write them off in this game just yet: the pitch may yet flatten out into a more typical Ageas Bowl surface, and with the deficit just 36, there is still every chance they can bat their way back into contention. One senses that few tears would be shed outside of the county borders if Hampshire were to end this season in the bottom two. Their Championship attendances are regularly among the lowest in the top flight, and bad blood lingers after their survival during the Durham debacle of 2016. Throw into the mix the fact that not a single ball has been delivered by an Englishman in their past three innings, and it is safe to conclude that Hampshire have won little support from neutrals since their return to Division One.While this effort was largely dictated by the efforts of Northeast, who took three hours over his first Championship fifty at this ground since his move from Kent, and the cosmopolitan bowling attack, their home-grown stalwart Jimmy Adams made an invaluable 31 in conditions that demanded grit and patience.Adams is in his final run of games ahead of his retirement at the end of the season, and while he has rarely flirted with England contention or grabbed national attention, he is a highly-respected character on the county circuit, and – like one other left-handed opener has this week – he demonstrated the value of leaving well and digging in as Somerset sought early wickets. At 68 for 6, Hampshire looked in danger of succumbing to a first-innings deficit, but Northeast and Liam Dawson combined to steer them into the lead and towards a useful position. Neither played a brilliant, fluent innings, but they picked off width from the change bowlers in a crucial stand of 56, the highest of the day.An hour into the day, there was no real sign of the carnage that was imminent. While Dale Steyn and Kyle Abbott both nipped the new ball around, that had come as little surprise, and Tom Abell’s decision to bat after winning the toss seemed perfectly reasonable.Going into the final run of games, Abbott’s efforts for the season were distinctly underwhelming: as of the start of August, he had 17 Championship wickets at 40.47 and an economy rate of 11.5 in a handful of Blast games. But he has 24 wickets at 10.63 in the last three-and-a-half first-class games, and looked like his old self here, lifting a few balls sharply off the pitch and finding considerable movement off the seam. After missing his length several times in his first over, which went for 17, Abbott found Marcus Trescothick’s edge, before removing James Hildreth, Steven Davies, Lewis Gregory, and Jamie Overton in a spell of four wickets for as many runs in as many overs than spanned the lunch interval; Gregory and Overton were unfortunate to get balls that hardly got up on the bounce.Ben Green, on his second Championship appearance, was the only Somerset batsman to look settled at the crease in his patient 26, and his wicket – bowled by an inswinger from the relentless Ian Holland – brought about a collapse of 8 for 42.Somerset may well feel aggrieved at the lack of scrutiny surrounding this pitch after the furore over the Taunton wicket in last week’s game. A decision as to whether they will be docked points for that pitch is expected to come before the start of next week’s game against Surrey, but by that stage their title hopes may well have evaporated. One Jamie Overton delivery here that trapped Tom Alsop lbw playing no shot suggested that the seam movement on offer occasionally exceeded reasonable levels despite the comparative silence from social media jurors.

'He didn't like it' – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals the 'complications' he had with Cristiano Ronaldo at Man Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo asked him to bench him when he was at Manchester United and then got angry when he did.

  • Ronaldo asked Solskjaer to bench him
  • Was then angry when he did
  • 'Loads of respect between us'
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Solskjaer jumped at the opportunity to sign Ronaldo late in the summer of 2021, causing a wave of excitement and a social media frenzy. But he has admitted that Ronaldo's return did not go as planned and spoke about the player's volcanic personality.

  • WHAT SOLSKJAER SAID

“Cristiano – when you know him and speak to him, he wanted to play three out of four games, he realised he’s getting older as well. But when you leave him out once, he’s not happy!" Solskjaer told the podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet. "Part of signing Cristiano Ronaldo was getting that passion from him, but that did have its complications. You’ve got Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, who can learn from Cristiano as he’s the best, the most disciplined and he’s been the best player in the world, and you think he’s going to help them. When he arrived at the club, he told me to start him for three games in a row, and then put me on the bench for the fourth game, but he’s so passionate so when I did that, he didn’t like it."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo had a stunning start to his return with United, scoring twice on his debut against Newcastle and snatching winners in the Champions League against Villarreal and Atalanta. But the team's form dipped and after heavy defeats by Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City and Watford, Solskjaer was sacked in November. The Norwegian added: “With the ball, with him in the team, it was no problem. Without him [pressing], we had to change a little bit the different roles we’d gotten used to. We were one of the highest pressing teams before [Ronaldo joined]. We let Dan James go when Cristiano came in, and they’re two different types of players. It was the right decision to make for me – it didn’t turn out to be the right one.”

Despite the complicated side of Ronaldo's personality, Solskjaer stressed that there was a lot of mutual respect between them. “I had a good relationship with Cristiano and there’s loads of respect between us. I think he behaved really well in his disappointments when I was there," he added. Solskjaer's successor Erik ten Hag had more problems with Ronaldo, who left a match with Tottenham early and was subsequently suspended from the team. He left the club in November 2022 after lashing out at the club in an interview with Piers Morgan.

Marsh withdrawal leaves Surrey with a headache

Mitchell Marsh is facing his second operation in a year and that leaves Surrey with problems with the county season only days away

Australian allrounder Mitch Marsh has withdrawn from his deal at Surrey and could miss Australia’s next Test campaign because of the need for ankle surgery.Marsh’s stock rose when he made two centuries during Australia’s 4-0 defeat of England, but his ankle problems intensified as the series developed. That means a withdrawal from his Surrey deal as well as missing Australia’s limited-overs tour of England and Ireland in June.Marsh hopes to be available for Australia’s away Test series against Pakistan in September / October and Surrey are clinging to the hope that he may play in the final stages of the Specsavers Championship.Marsh said: “I’ll be doing everything I can to get myself fully fit and hopefully join the side later in the season.”Marsh had been due to play for Surrey in all three formats, leaving them with a gap to fill with the Championship season only days away.It is his second operation in less than a year: he also underwent a shoulder operation after a tour of India.

Man City: Guardiola eyeing "exceptional" ace with 4.3 clearances per game

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is now targeting a new defensive reinforcement in the January transfer window, according to latest reports.

What's the latest news involving Manchester City?

According to The Sun, Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne wants to finish his career at the Etihad Stadium and will reject any big-money approaches from the Saudi Pro League in 2024.

The Belgium international reportedly has no interest in moving to the Middle East to continue his career amid a belief that he can perform at the elite level for some time to come. If De Bruyne does ever choose to leave the Premier League champions, it is believed that he would rather remain in Europe.

And in Manchester City news from the world of international football, England boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed that he has talked veteran defender Kyle Walker out of retiring from Three Lions duty on two separate occasions, as cited by The Guardian.

Southgate has spoken glowingly about Walker's impact in an England jersey, stating: "I’ve talked him [Walker] out of retirement twice. After the Euros and after the World Cup. I think he loves being here, he’s wanted to keep going and now he’s thinking about how many caps he can get. He’s critical to us. If we’re talking about world‑class players in their position in our team then he’s probably one of them."

Meanwhile, as per The Daily Star, Manchester City are believed to be 'confident' of fending off competition from Brighton & Hove Albion and Serie A giants Juventus to land Boca Juniors full-back Valentin Barco, who has an £8 million release clause that Guardiola is willing to activate.

Joan Patsy, who is Manchester City's South American-based sporting director, is driving the move for Barco and the Blues' knowledge and recruitment success from the continent has increased the appeal of completing a deal for the 19-year-old.

Who else are Manchester City keen to bring in?

According to The Sun, Manchester City are monitoring West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd and could swoop for the Morocco international next summer.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are also keen on the 27-year-old and are now keen to strengthen their defence due to Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip being on the wrong side of 30 years old. Aguerd has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia in recent times.

During his spell at the Hammers, Aguerd has become a hit among supporters and has featured 33 times in all competitions for West Ham United, registering three goals in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Labelled "exceptional" by Gary Lineker on Match of The Day, via West Ham Zone, back in February, Aguerd has started 2023/24 in strong fashion and has completed 4.3 clearances per match in the Premier League.

In the Hammers' 2-1 victory over Luton Town at Kenilworth Road before the international break, Aguerd asserted his dominance at the heart of David Moyes' backline, winning six aerial duels, according to Sofascore.

Manchester City boss Guardiola is known for his talent ID and would be carrying out a shrewd bit of business by bringing Aguerd to the Etihad Stadium.

Marsh makes his case as England are forced to toil

Shaun Marsh completed his fifth Test hundred as Australia declared on 442 for 8 to pile the pressure onto England

The Report by Brydon Coverdale03-Dec-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAustralia’s selectors picking Shaun Marsh, and Joe Root sending Australia in to bat. If these were two of the more controversial decisions made in relation to this Ashes series, only one now appears an inspired call. On the second day at Adelaide Oval, Marsh pulled and drove his way to the fifth hundred of his Test career, while Root faced the embarrassment of seeing Australia declare in their sixth session of batting after he sent them in.Their total was 8 for 442, and they had batted for 149 overs. Root had spoken at the toss about his bowlers getting two chances with the new ball on day one, a curious mindset for a captain choosing to field. By the time Steven Smith declared, a third new ball was on the horizon. Australia’s score was only the 97th-highest total by any team having been sent in to bat in Test history, but for Root that comfort was as cold as the rainy Adelaide evening.Marsh’s swampy innings

231 Balls faced by Shaun Marsh at No. 6 – The most by an Australia batsman in the last five years. Mike Hussey tops the overall list having faced 253 balls against India at Sydney in 2012.
5 Centuries for Marsh in Tests. This is only his second century at home in 19 innings. Previously he scored 188 against West Indies at Hobart. Marsh became the fourth centurion for Australia in day-night Tests after Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith and Peter Handscomb.
155 Average overs bowled by England in the first innings of their last seven away Tests. The least they have bowled is 129.3 overs against India at Vizag. They have lost five and drawn one during this period.
11 Instances of opposition declaring after being sent in to bat by England in Tests. The previous instance was in 2007 at Galle when Sri Lanka declared at 499 for 8. England have won only once though.
442 Australia’s highest score in a day-night Test, going past the 429 they scored against Pakistan at Brisbane. This is the fourth highest first innings score in all day-night Tests.

England progressed to 1 for 29 in their reply, having lost Mark Stoneman as well as a review to a Mitchell Starc yorker that would have crashed into leg stump. Alastair Cook was on 11 and James Vince was yet to score when the wet weather arrived and ended play for the evening. England remained 413 runs in arrears, and the Ashes were slipping ever further out of their grasp. If it was a black day for England, it was a red-letter one for Australia’s selectors. Not only did Marsh make an unbeaten 126 but the wicketkeeper Tim Paine, an even more surprising selection, had frustrated England with a breezy 57 that came at a key juncture. Paine had walked to the crease in the first over of the day, after Stuart Broad trapped Peter Handscomb lbw for 36; Australia were 5 for 209, and England could dream of a quick kill. But Paine counter-attacked against the still-new pink ball, striking early boundaries off James Anderson and putting the pressure back on to England. He survived a worrying blow to his right hand – his struggle to recover from a fractured right index finger contributed to his long absence from international cricket – and his aggressive mood meant Marsh at the other end could bide his time, adding only 29 runs to his score in a two-and-a-half-hour opening session.England’s bowlers have found the going tough on recent overseas tours•ESPNcricinfo LtdBoth Paine and Marsh were given out lbw to Anderson by umpire Chris Gaffaney in quick succession, but on both occasions the batsmen reviewed and were reprieved by the ball-tracker showing the ball would have sailed over the top of the stumps. Paine batted on and brought up his fifty from his 91st delivery, before pulling a catch straight to Moeen Ali in the deep off Craig Overton. It meant Paine had missed out on a chance to build just the second century of his first-class career – the first one having come 11 years ago – but he had done more than enough for the Australians, who were well on their way to a position of comfort. Starc pulled a catch off Broad for 6 but Marsh soon found another quality ally as Pat Cummins joined him for what became the biggest partnership of Australia’s innings, a 99-run combination for the eighth wicket.Cummins failed to get off the mark until his 37th delivery, when he sliced a cut for four off Overton, but from then on he scored his 44 at nearly a run a ball. Marsh, though, was the key man for Australia. His calm approach spoke of an experienced head, which was one of the criteria Australia’s selectors had cited when naming him in the side. He scored productively from the pull, also driving handsomely through the off side in typical Marsh fashion.Marsh reached triple figures from his 213th delivery with a perfectly placed pull for four off Woakes, and it was his first Test hundred since the tour of Sri Lanka in August last year. It also took him past his father Geoff’s tally of Test centuries from exactly half the amount of matches. Marsh had lifted his tempo after tea, and again after dinner raised it still further as the declaration approached.England removed Cummins but not Marsh, and a life that he was given rather summed up England’s day. From the penultimate delivery before dinner, Marsh fended a Woakes bouncer into the air in the off side, where Cook at a floating second slip and Vince at gully converged, dived, and together fluffed the chance in comical fashion. It was a life for Marsh, but by then he had 102, and had already done the damage.By the close of play, Cook and Vince were together once more, and England desperately needed them to work more cohesively if their team was to get out of this self-imposed hole.

Chelsea: Reporter left buzzing over "big boost" for Pochettino

Chelsea tying down Levi Colwill to a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge can provide a 'big boost' for Mauricio Pochettino's side moving forward, according to journalist Paul Brown.

How long is Levi Colwill's new contract at Chelsea?

As per Sky Sports News, Colwill has put pen to paper on a new six-year deal at Stamford Bridge with the option of an additional year on his fresh contract.

The England Under-21 international has expressed his delight at the news, stating in an interview: "It's always been an easy decision. As I've grown up, all I've known is Chelsea. I've spoken with the manager and he's given me reassurance, that trust I needed."

90min have claimed that Colwill has seen a hefty rise in his weekly pay packet at Chelsea from his old deal worth around £5,000 per week and will now be set to pocket £100k-a-week in west London.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool were big admirers of Colwill's talents during the spell of uncertainty that lingered regarding his future at Chelsea that has now been extinguished.

Last term, Colwill spent time out on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion, where he went on to make 22 appearances in all competitions, accumulating two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

As per The Guardian, Roberto De Zerbi's Seagulls were also keen on Colwill and even had a bid turned down for his services last month while they also mooted the possibility of him being part of a player-plus-cash deal involving Moises Caicedo heading in the opposite direction.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Brown thinks that Chelsea being able to extend Colwill's stay at Stamford Bridge for the foreseeable future is a big positive for boss Pochettino looking ahead.

Brown told FFC: "It is a big boost, I think this guy's got a bright future. He certainly toyed with the idea of leaving again this summer. Chelsea had no intention of letting him go, whether this means that there is another loan on the cards, though, I don't know. I mean, Chelsea are little lights on defenders at the moment through injury, so it might be that he senses a chance and he's been promised that he'll get one. I wouldn't at all surprise me now if he starts the season in the team at Chelsea; we'll have to see. If he has a good pre-season and gets in there, there's no reason to think he can't start and that's always been what he's wanted at the club. We'll have to see, but it's good news for Chelsea certainly that the contract and the future there is tied up."

What now for Chelsea?

Chelsea look to be probing in the market to wrap up some extra reinforcements ahead of the new Premier League campaign getting underway.

The Blues are believed to be 'on the verge' of completing a deal to bring in Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga between the sticks, as per The Daily Mail.

Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Monaco defender Axel Disasi is now close to joining Sanchez at Stamford Bridge and will arrive from the Ligue 1 outfit for a fee of €45 million, according to The Independent.

Reports in Spain claim that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is trying to initiate a stunning deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Kylian Mbappe, though it remains to be seen whether such an ambitious move could successfully come to fruition.
