WHAT NEXT FOR MLS?
The Round 1 Best-of-3 series begins Friday evening at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, FL when Messi makes his MLS postseason debut. They'll host Atlanta United as they make their journey to MLS Cup.
When India last played a Test series in Australia and sealed a historic win, an inevitable caveat was attached – Australia were without their key players Steven Smith and David Warner, and a team with a new captain and a shaky batting line-up.Without Virat Kohli in the middle, an unsettled opening pair, and a stand-in captain with some existential questions of his own, India are now comparable to that Australian team on the follow-up tour.It is one thing that India knew of Kohli’s exit and had planned for it, quite another that it followed a historic low. Not much was needed for a smooth handover to Ajinkya Rahane: a closer contest in Adelaide, a game that lasted deeper than two nights and half a day, might have done it, even if India had lost. A few tweaks in the batting order, a little oiling of the machine, and there would still be enough time to force a series result.Yet here Rahane is – the last match of a year that’s been relentless in many other ways – tasked with trying to keep the series alive with the ghosts of 36 all out and, without one half of the fast-bowling duo that was going to anchor this tour, potentially having to try and plug the gaps with a couple of debutants. In the other camp, Tim Paine is a much more relaxed man, and Australia a much different team. There is still no Warner, and it’s far from a solid batting line-up. But they hung on, in a match of two Steven Smith runs, long enough for their bowling attack to work its magic. Both openers found runs by the end of the last match, the wunderkind debutant looked like he belongs, and they know a softened Indian team cannot win the series if it becomes 2-0 at Melbourne. You won’t catch them worrying about caveats.

In the spotlight
Steven Smith is always in the spotlight against India. Before the first Test, he had a fifty-plus score every alternate innings on average against India. After scores of 1 and 1*, he still averages 79.5 against them. Australia will be itching to have Smith in the middle with a decent score on the board, on a drop-in pitch, against a line-up with some scars. There is only one way this tour can get worse for India, and that is if Smith finds his hands again. He is perhaps the most skilled bowler in the Indian line-up, but Jasprit Bumrah has never been the singular senior fast bowler before. Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami have both been around for the entirety of Bumrah’s Test career so far, sharing responsibilities in a strong bowling attack. Umesh Yadav is experienced but not a regular, and there a debutant in Mohammed Siraj. Bumrah is regarded for having a steady head, and for becoming progressively better within matches and series. Can he continue to do that as the de facto leader of the bowling?Australia are not thinking about how to fit Warner in until they absolutely have to•Getty Images
Team news
Paine has backed both Matthew Wade and Cameron Green ahead of this match, and said Australia are not thinking about how to fit Warner in until they absolutely have to. There are no indications of any changes in the line-up.Australia (probable): 1 Joe Burns, 2 Matthew Wade, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Tim Paine (capt & wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Nathan LyonIndia have dropped Prithvi Shaw and handed debuts to Shubman Gill and Siraj, who both had decent outings in the practice games before the series. Rishabh Pant got a hundred in the second of those games, and he is in the side to replace Wriddhiman Saha as the wicketkeeper. Those are the like-for-like changes. Ravindra Jadeja who missed the first Test with concussion and hamstring issues will be the fifth bowling option.India: 1 Mayank Agarwal, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 5 Hanuma Vihari, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Jasprit Bumrah
Pitch and conditions
Melbourne’s forecast suggests some major fluctuations through the Test. Pleasant weather on the first day is expected to be followed by a 33-degree-celsius high on the second, which is also the only day with a rain forecast. The last three days are expected to be drastically cooler than that.
Stats and trivia
Australia have won all six Tests they’ve played since the end of last year’s Ashes. This is Paine’s best streak since taking over as captain.
Since 2001, India have played two debutants overseas only on two occasions before – Virender Sehwag and Deep Dasgupta in 2001 against South Africa, and Kohli, Abhinav Mukund and Praveen Kumar in 2011 against West Indies.
This will be the 100th Test between Australia and India – Australia have won 43 and lost 28 of those, and there has been one tie.
Quotes
“The moment we take out foot off the pedal and think we are going all right, we saw in England in that fifth Test, that we can come unstuck pretty quickly. So, a huge focus of ours since that fifth Test in the Ashes has been winning after winning and our attitude towards the next game. The last week we have been fantastic in the way we have prepared for this game. We know that some of the players they are talking about coming into their side, like a KL Rahul or a Rishabh Pant, are dangerous players who like to take the game on and will play positively. If we give guys like that an inch, they will take a mile.”
Eddie Howe's Newcastle United side were unable to replicate their impressive form from 2022/23, with the Magpies finishing the season seventh in the Premier League.
However, compared to where they were just a couple of years ago, the club are on a clear trajectory, and with a team full of talented stars, it's only a matter of time until they start regularly challenging the so-called ‘big six’.
No Newcastle fan could’ve envisaged such a rapid transformation, with stars such as Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes excelling for the Magpies and playing a crucial role in securing Champions League football last season.
The club have been reliant on shrewd business to take them to where they are today, with the aforementioned players playing a huge role in the club’s recent and unexpected success.
One player in particular has proven to be excellent business for the club, not in terms of his abilities under Howe, but for the profit he’s set to make the club in the near future.
Yankuba Minteh’s stats in 2023/24
Forward Yankuba Minteh joined the club on 1 July 2023 from Danish side Odense BK, before immediately joining Feyenoord on loan for the rest of the 2023/24 campaign.

The 19-year-old Gambian has scored ten times and produced six assists in his 27 appearances in the Eredivisie, as he looks to gain experience ahead of a potential first-team spot for Newcastle next season.
As demonstrated by his stats in the Netherlands this season, he clearly has a lot of talent despite his tender age, with Minteh having the potential to save the Magpies a lot of money in the long run.

However, as a result of his excellent form under newly appointed Liverpool boss Arne Slot, he’s attracted major interest from the Reds, with the Dutchman reportedly willing to spend £40m to secure his services this summer.
The figure reported is an obscene one, especially considering the fee Howe and the Saudi PIF formed out for his signature less than 12 months ago.
Yankuba Minteh’s transfer value in 2024
Less than a year on from his £6m move to St James’ Park, the Gambian has seen his market value soar as a result of his impressive loan stint, with his price tag rocketing above one current Newcastle first-team member.
According to Football Transfers, the youngster is now valued at €22.9m (£19m), an increase of 216% – a concrete example of the club’s recent success within the transfer market. As a result, Liverpool could significantly overpay for his services by acquiring him.
His subsequent value is higher than Brazilian Joelinton who’s now only priced at €18.3m (£15m) despite arriving on Tyneside for £40m back in the summer of 2019.

Despite potential rumours linking the youngster with a move away from St James' Park, they must keep hold of the attacker, with Minteh having the potential to be a first-team regular for many years to come.
Whilst the Gambian would allow for an easy sale to help their FFP situation, he could prove to develop further on Tyneside and catapult Howe’s side back into a battle for a Champions League spot next season.
Another Toney situation: Newcastle could sell ace with "Vinicius quality"
Newcastle may have to part ways with a superb talent to avoid FFP issues.
Jurgen Klopp will walk out on Sunday afternoon to listen to Anfield's song from the dugout one last time, with Liverpool hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the Premier League season.
This day has been signposted right from the German's shock news back in January that he would be stepping down after taking the reins in 2015 and leading Liverpool to glory across all the different fronts. But it hurts all the same. Such things invariably do.
Klopp will take great solace and pride in his ability to recraft his team after slumping into the Europa League, banishing the sapped and past-its-sell-by midfield and replacing it with some terrific, younger, more inspiring talent.
The Reds won the Carabao Cup in February, belying a staggering injury list, but proved to be a day late and a dollar short in the other three prizes, suffering from a nosedive in form and performance to crash out of the FA Cup and Europa League and slew off-course in the Premier League late on.
Wolves will certainly not roll over to hand Klopp the fairytale final day that Anfield will pray for, though Liverpool's firepower should be enough to secure three points and finish an impressive campaign with 82 points.
After collapsing to draw 3-3 at Aston Villa last time, leggy Liverpool might find four tweaks made to the starting line-up as Klopp bows out.
1
GK – Alisson
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Alisson has undoubtedly been one of the major pillars throughout Klopp's reign, signing from Roma for a record £67m fee back in 2018 and going on to win the Champions League and Premier League across his first two seasons as a Red.
He's suffered with injuries this season but the Brazilian is, as Klopp puts it, "the best goalkeeper in the world" and will, of course, be vital against the Old Gold.
2
RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold has also struggled for match fitness for portions of the season but Liverpool's vice-captain is one of the game's celestial creative players.
The right-back will be expected to play a big part in the years to come under incoming boss Arne Slot but he's out of contract at the end of next season and, with Real Madrid sniffing around, there is heightened concern that tomorrow might be his final appearance for his boyhood club.
3
CB – Jarell Quansah
Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.
The rise of Jarell Quansah has been one of the biggest success stories this season, especially considering that the imminently departing Joel Matip suffered an ACL injury against Fulham in December.
Listed as a similar player to Ibrahima Konate and Micky van de Ven by FBref's player comparison model, the new kid on the block has been immense throughout his breakthrough season, scoring his first Premier League goal last time out at Villa Park.
He earned his first Premier League start at Molineux in the reverse fixture and earned an 8/10 match rating from reporter Ian Doyle for his front-footed, commanding display.
4
CB – Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool
In his first campaign as Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk has been a rock-solid presence in the rearguard, dealing with piling injury problems inflicted upon his peers to reaffirm his position as one of the game's finest-ever centre-backs.
Wolves will have a tough task against the steely Dutchman.
5
LB – Andy Robertson
Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool.
Andy Robertson has struggled with injuries this season – there's a trend here – but the 30-year-old is still one of the best in the business and has been vital in recent weeks, scoring in his last two games in the Premier League, against West Ham United and Spurs.
The Scotland captain also bagged against Wolves earlier in the campaign and his newfound Midas touch is another thing that the visitors will have to worry about tomorrow.
6
DM – Wataru Endo
Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo
Liverpool's decision to sign Wataru Endo last summer has proved to be an astute piece of business, succeeding Fabinho after the Brazilian stalwart fell by the wayside last year.

All things considered, Liverpool's surprise £16m signing has been an upgrade on last season's version of Fabinho. But the 31-year-old is not the long-term solution and Liverpool's new structure must make the pursuit of a high-level No. 6 one of the first ports of call this summer.
7
CM – Dominik Szoboszlai
Dominik Szoboszlai scores for Liverpool
Dominik Szoboszlai has lost his way after a resounding start to life on Merseyside, signing from RB Leipzig for £60m last summer, but he deserves to start against Wolves.
Liverpool are, frankly, a team in need of a rest and Klopp must bench the impressive Harvey Elliott to freshen things up and give his high-profile Hungarian signing one last chance to make an impression in 2023/24.
8
CM – Curtis Jones
Liverpool player Curtis Jones.
Curtis Jones suffered an ankle injury against Brentford in February that has disrupted his flow quite considerably over the past few months, starting just two of his team's eight league games since returning to fitness.
But Alexis Mac Allister was noticeably leggy against Villa, and, with third place secured, Klopp should give the Scouse-born talent a final starting berth on Sunday.
Mac Allister was hailed as a "superstar" by Joe Cole earlier in the campaign and he has been one of Liverpool's major focal points, but his 5/10 match rating at Villa Park suggests that perhaps he has run out of gas.
9
RW – Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah for Liverpool
Mohamed Salah is the forward of Klopp's reign, scoring 211 goals and adding 89 assists across 348 outings for Liverpool. There's room for one more on this final, fated day – surely?
10
LW – Luis Diaz
Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.
Liverpool's indefatigable left winger has been in the news recently as speculation mounts over his future at Anfield but he's sure to start once again against Gary O'Neil's side, having featured from the outset in every Premier League fixture since January.
After a couple of days in which they had looked likely to finish third in a two-horse race Lancashire’s cricketers finally located their capacity for resistance on the final afternoon of this game. As though offering a counterpoint to their team’s first innings, Lancashire’s openers, Keaton Jennings and Alex Davies, batted with untroubled ease on a pitch tranquilised by the heavy roller to share an unbroken stand of 120. The gentle serenity of the cricket in the evening session at Trent Bridge mocked the frenetic tumble of wickets 24 hours earlier.Davies was comfortably the more fluent and finished the match on 69 not out, his second fifty in five innings. Jennings has yet to find his best form; his unbeaten 37 was his first score above 18 in the Bob Willis Trophy. But both batsmen may have viewed the final hour of this match as decent practice for the Roses game, which begins on Saturday. Spectators or no spectators, the atmosphere at Headingley will be livelier than it was when this match was brought safely into harbour just before five o’clock. At that point the draw was agreed and the players bumped elbows or whatever cricketers do in these Covidian times.Nottinghamshire took 16 points from the game to Lancashire’s nine and the division is an accurate reflection of the teams’ cricket over the first two innings. When the visitors were dismissed for 173 an hour and a half into the morning, the deficit was 299 and there was a minimum of 67 overs left in the match. A couple of quick wickets either side of lunch and the fourth evening may have been as lively as the third. It is occasionally tempting and almost always an error to think that the outcome to any cricket match has been inevitable all along. It helped the Lancastrian cause, of course, that it took Steven Mullaney’s bowlers most of the morning session to take Lancashire’s last four wickets. The principal credit for that should go Steven Croft, who will have seen many mornings like the one which greeted him at Trent Bridge today. But then in his 16 years with Lancashire’s first team Croft has seen every type of morning. The enriching wonder of it is that he seems to approach each of them with an enthusiasm not too dissimilar from that his seventh-wicket partner, 22-year-old Tom Hartley, who was playing in his second first-class match. As if to show how straightforward it was to stay in on this pitch Croft and Hartley batted without great alarm for nearly an hour. The impression of blithe progress was shattered, though, when Croft received a deliciously evil bouncer from Tom Barber and could only fend it to the substitute fielder, Liam Patterson-White, in the gully. By then, though, Blackpool’s finest had batted for 157 minutes and faced 114 balls to make his third fifty in four first-class inningsThe most entertaining moment of the morning was then provided by the usually faultless operators of Trent Bridge’s giant scoreboard when Luke Wood came out to play his first innings against his old county. In a rare lapse the board featured a huge picture of Wood in his old Nottinghamshire clobber, although perhaps this was an attempt to unsettle the batsman by reminding him of his recent perfidy.Since Wood is carrying a hamstring injury and already had his skipper, Dane Vilas, running for him, this destabilisation might have been unnecessary. In any event he poked around for 25 minutes before skying a low full toss from Barber to Ben Slater at short leg. Seven balls later Tom Bailey and Liam Hurt had gone as well and Hartley had run out of partners having batted longer and faced more balls than anyone else in the innings except Croft. He at least can look back on this game with pride as he travels home. It has probably not occurred to him that both sides will almost certainly need to win their final two games to have any chance of qualifying for the final of this competition.
Secretary Usmani believes Covid-19 cases in the UAE will reduce by September
ESPNcricinfo staff31-Jul-2020The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) is hopeful of getting the government’s clearance to fill 30-50 % of the stadiums with spectators for IPL 2020, which is scheduled to be held in the country from September 19 to November 10.”We will definitely want our people to experience this prestigious event but it is totally the government’s decision,” UAE board secretary Mubashshir Usmani told . “For most events here, the number ranges from 30 to 50% capacity, we are looking at a similar number. We are hopeful of getting our government’s approval on that.”Currently, the UAE has just over 6200 active cases of Covid-19, and Usmani believed that it would reduce further by the time the IPL gets underway.”The UAE government has been very efficient in bringing down the case numbers,” he said. We are almost living a normal life with certain rules and protocols to be followed. And with the IPL still some time way, we will be in an even better place than what it is right now.”ALSO READ: Ahead of IPL Governing Council meeting, questions on Covid-19 testing and bio-bubblesThe UAE board has received an official letter of intent from the BCCI for hosting IPL 2020, and is now waiting for the formal nod from the Indian government to “ink the final deal” with the BCCI. The protocols for the tournament in the UAE are expected to be finalised during the IPL governing council’s meeting on August 2.But would the UAE board be able to manage the training sessions of eight franchises?”UAE is blessed with the support of private infrastructure,” Usmani said. “We are able to deliver such events and have delivered before. Last year, we hosted the T20 World Cup qualifier which had 14 teams.”It’s not a completely new experience for the ECB, as the first 20 games of the 2014 IPL were held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah because of the Indian general elections.”Last time also, it contributed significantly to the UAE economy,” Usmani said. “With the full tournament taking place this time, it will be a much bigger boost.”
It's set to be a busy summer for West Ham United on and off the pitch, as they're potentially forced to find a replacement for David Moyes before going head-to-head with Manchester United in pursuit of a Ligue 1 midfielder.
West Ham transfer news
Before anything, the Hammers must establish what their managerial plan is and just who will be in charge come the start of next season. As things stand, Moyes is set to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the current campaign, but there's still some time for that to change. If the Scot does depart, then West Ham fans could see Steve Cooper or Graham Potter arrive after both were linked with the job.
West Ham officials are keen on signing record-breaker in £15m+ transfer

Whilst finding a solution to their managerial problem, however, West Ham have still had an eye on incomings on the pitch, with Ivan Toney the biggest name to have been linked with a summer switch. It's no secret that the England international is unlikely to stay put at Brentford this summer and the Hammers could take full advantage to land a statement signing.
serhou-guirassy-ivan-toney-tottenham-opinion
Meanwhile, according to Calciomercato, West Ham are also eyeing a move to sign Youssouf Fofana from AS Monaco alongside interest from Manchester United. The midfielder is reportedly ready to leave Monaco at the end of the season and rejected a new deal in search of that exit, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2025.
Given that he has just one year remaining on his deal, giving Monaco limited time to cash in, reports suggest that Fofana's price tag sits at around €30m (£26m) in what would be one of the bargains of the summer if West Ham pursued a deal. The France international would represent the perfect start to the summer for the Hammers.
"Magnificent" Fofana can unleash Paqueta
If Lucas Paqueta's impact wasn't impressive enough at West Ham, then a player of Fofana's calibre would take it to the next level to leave the Hammers in the best position possible to continue their European exploits. Whether his arrival would come at a cost for James Ward-Prowse or Tomas Soucek remains to be seen, but dropping either of the current West Ham midfielders would be worth it to make room for Fofana.

If the move does take place, then Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig will certainly be pleased, having urged Premier League sides to pursue Fofana back in 2022.
Everything is pointing towards Fofana being a player that West Ham would be wise to welcome this summer, as they kick off their new era potentially without Moyes in charge.
