Chelsea women's player ratings vs Man Utd: The Blues are WSL champions again – Lucy Bronze header secures title as USWNT star Naomi Girma shows why she's one of the world's best

The Lionesses defender bagged the title-winning goal as Sonia Bompastor's side capitalised on a shock defeat for Arsenal at Aston Villa

Lucy Bronze's flying header secured Chelsea's sixth successive Women's Super League title on Wednesday night as the Blues got the job done at the first time of asking, forcing Manchester United to watch the celebrations take place on their own patch for the second year in a row. Sonia Bompastor's side probably wouldn't have arrived in Leigh expecting to have the opportunity to clinch a trophy that has felt like theirs for months now, but a shocking loss for Arsenal at Aston Villa in the evening's early kick-off gave them the chance to do so, and it was one Chelsea took in a gritty 1-0 win.

At Old Trafford just less than 12 months ago, it was a rampant performance from Mayra Ramirez that gave the Blues a ridiculous 6-0 victory and another league title. This was a more under-stated affair. It was more competitive, too, with United the better team for large parts as their pursuit of Champions League football continues. But some strong saves from Hannah Hampton and a few examples of remarkable defending from Naomi Girma kept the hosts at bay.

There were not too many chances on the night but even as the final stages approached, it felt like there would be a goal and it was provided by an unlikely scorer – and in surprising fashion. Phallon Tullis-Joyce has been excellent all year, earning herself a United States debut as a result, but she was nowhere near Sandy Baltimore's corner as Bronze rose highest and headed into a relatively empty net to put the Blues on the brink. They only needed a point but they secured all three, wrapping up the WSL title with two games to spare to make it the earliest triumph in competition history.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Leigh Sports Village…

  • Goalkeeper & Defence

    Hannah Hampton (7/10):

Made a clumsy mistake when she parried a Malard shot right into the path of Clinton early on but made amends with some great goalkeeping throughout the remainder of the game to keep a vital clean sheet.

    Lucy Bronze (7/10):

Gave the ball away a little too easily at times but battled well and popped up with a brilliant header to deliver the title.

    Millie Bright (6/10):

Dealt relatively well with the tricky challenge Malard provided, though was lucky not to concede a penalty in a clumsy collision with Clinton.

    Naomi Girma (8/10):

A glimpse at the world-class talent Chelsea paid a world-record fee for. A huge block to deny Clinton was the stand-out moment of a strong display.

    Niamh Charles (6/10):

A little indecisive at times but generally a better performance after some shaky ones.

  • Midfield

    Keira Walsh (7/10):

Looked confident and composed when she got the ball, calmly getting Chelsea out of trouble and setting up attacks.

    Erin Cuthbert (7/10):

Was dominant in her duels and great on the ball, bar a few sloppy passes.

    Wieke Kaptein (7/10):

Worked really hard when things were scrappy and then started to shine more as the game went on.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Aggie Beever-Jones (6/10):

Moved central once Ramirez limped off. Worked hard and was full of energy but lacked service.

    Mayra Ramirez (6/10):

Was sharp and full of running until she had to be withdrawn with less than half an hour played due to a knee injury.

    Sandy Baltimore (6/10):

Constantly offered an option in the final third and often looked likely to create an opening, be it from open play or her good set pieces. It was one of the latter that delivered the match-winning moment.

  • Subs & Manager

    Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (5/10):

Injected a lot of energy into the Chelsea attack when replacing Ramirez early on, making good runs into the box to trouble the United defence, but was sloppy with her passing in her defensive third. Subbed off with 15 to play.

    Sjoeke Nusken (7/10):

Had over half an hour to make her mark and did so with plenty of energy as Chelsea slowly but surely got a foothold in the game.

    Guro Reiten (N/A):

Part of a late triple sub to help Chelsea see out a title-clinching victory.

    Catarina Macario (N/A):

So close to getting on the scoresheet when she forced a fine save out of Tullis-Joyce.

    Maika Hamano (N/A):

    Another late sub.

    Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Injuries, including one to Ramirez early in this game, restricted what she could do to some extended but she didn't panic when Man Utd had joy and made subtle adjustments to allow her team to eventually grab the vital win they needed.

Imagine him & Rogers: Aston Villa step up move for "extremely talented" gem

Aston Villa will be hoping they can better their fortunes this season as the second half of the 2024/25 campaign rolls around. Unai Emery’s side have not quite been at their best so far, and have perhaps struggled with the demands of Champions League football.

That is something which might explain why they are eighth in the Premier League, with just 32 points to their name and a surprising minus-two goal difference. Things could certainly have gone better for the Villans, although they did start 2025 with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

To give themselves a better chance of a successful season, Energy’s side could well dip into the transfer market this January. They reportedly have their sights set on a reinforcement to cover several bases.

Aston Villa’s January transfer news

The player in question here is Japanese attacker Taisei Miyashiro. The 24-year-old has impressed at his current club Vissel Kobe, and could depart the club over the winter transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the former Japan under-20 international ‘is wanted by Aston Villa in January’, as Emery searches for reinforcements ahead of a busy few weeks, with a deal having seemingly ‘taken a step forward’ of late.

This comes just days after a report broke that the Villans are targeting Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen, although it remains to be seen if the deals are separate.

In any case, Villa News explain that the Midlands club are hoping for a loan move with the option to buy Miyashiro at the end of the season.

Why Miyashiro would be a good signing

The 24-year-old is an incredibly versatile player. Miyashiro would be a good fit under Emery at Villa Park because of his ability to fill a few roles in his famed 4-2-2-2 system, which has seen so much success so far during his tenure.

That is to say, during his time at Vissel Kobe so far, Miyashiro has played as a midfielder, a left winger and a centre forward according to Transfermarkt. He operates in the left half-space a lot and does contribute to goals.

He has played 46 times for the club so far and has a really impressive 18 goals and one assist in that time.

In the 2024 Japanese first division, he scored 11 times in 32 games, an impressive return indeed. As journalist David Wyatt-Hupton said, he is an “extremely talented” player.

His stats on Sofascore from the 2024 J1 League also make for impressive reading. The 24-year-old has a 22% conversion rate and averages 1.6 shots per game, creating five big chances which suggests he is unlucky not to have more than one assist.

Miyashiro also works hard without the ball, winning an average of 4.1 duels per game.

He could form a deadly partnership with Morgan Rogers if the Villans get this deal over the line. It has been an excellent season for the Englishman so far, with Jamie Carragher describing him as a “machine” and an “unstoppable” force for the Midlands club.

The England international has six goals and three assists in 19 Premier League games this term, and his ball-carrying ability is a standout feature of his game. As per Sofascore, he averages 2.1 dribbles per game.

This could lead to some interesting rotations in attack for the Villans. With Rogers starting as a number 10 and Miyashiro leading the line, the Japanese star could drop deeper into the left-half space and create room for Rogers to burst past him with the ball at his feet.

The Villans number 27 is also a creative player in the final third, and has created seven big chances this season. Adding someone like Miyashiro to the attack, who scored 11 league goals in 2024, might only increase his assist output and help Villa improve their goal difference.

Given this is a loan move with the option to make it permanent at the end of the season, it seems risk-free for Villa. As the stats suggest, Miyashiro is a versatile and talented player, and he could make a real difference for Emery’s side as they look to climb the Premier League.

Are Leeds falling apart again? Daniel Farke feeling the heat at Elland Road as latest Championship promotion bid threatens to unravel

History is in danger of repeating itself for the Whites after an alarming dip in form at the worst possible time

On March 17, 2024, Leeds United went top of the Championship after a comfortable 2-0 win over Millwall at Elland Road. That result extended their unbeaten run to 13 games, with just one draw included in that sequence, and at that stage it seemed a decent bet that Daniel Farke's side would secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Unfortunately, everything changed after the international break. Leeds were held to a 2-2 draw away at Watford in their first game back, and only won two of their next seven matches, with the biggest low point coming in the form of a 4-0 hammering at QPR.

Leeds had to settle for the play-offs in the end, and that process just brought more heartbreak. After seeing off Norwich City impressively in the semi-finals, the Whites choked in the final at Wembley, losing 1-0 to Southampton, and were subsequently unable to keep hold of star trio Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter.

Speculation over Farke's future was rife, too, especially after the German admitted "it will be difficult to come back stronger", but Leeds stuck with the man they'd handed a four-year contract to the previous year. Fast-forward to the present, though, and supporters must be feeling like cast members in 'Groundhog Day'.

Leeds are very much back in the mix for a top-two finish, but their form has dropped off a cliff again when it really matters. Now, Farke must galvanise his troops before it's too late, with his job very much on the line entering a season-defining seven-game period…

Getty Images SportHuge victory marred by injury

Some of the Leeds players may have been planning a Championship title party in their heads as early as February 24. Farke's side followed up a dramatic comeback win against Sunderland with more late heroics to see off main promotion rivals Sheffield United 3-1 at Bramall Lane, which saw them move five points clear at the summit and seven ahead of third-place Burnley.

Farke, however, refused to get carried away. "Each and every point brings us closer to where we want to finish, but you have to keep going," he told a post-match press conference. "We're seven points clear of third before this round of matches and we are seven points clear now. In this league the momentum can change quickly and you can need some luck."

The cautious tone in Farke's voice had a lot to do with the loss of club captain Ethan Ampadu, who sat out the trip to Sheffield after damaging the cartilage in one of his knees. The Leeds boss added when pressed for an update on the former Chelsea midfielder: "He won't be available for the upcoming games at least. He more or less didn't miss a minute last season. It's a blow for us. Perhaps it was the reason we didn't start this game well."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMarch madness

Indeed, Leeds missed Ampadu more than perhaps even Farke could have imagined over the next three games. The Whites were held to a 1-1 draw at home by West Brom before they surrendered their unbeaten run when going down 1-0 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Victory over Millwall briefly lifted the mood, but Leeds then arrived at Loftus Road to try and exorcise the ghosts of last season, and ultimately fell short as they battled back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with QPR. Still, that point was enough for Leeds to go into the March international break top of the Championship for the second year running.

Leeds were also boosted by Ampadu returning from injury ahead of schedule, and there was an expectation that they would end the month on a high note against Swansea. The omens looked even better when Brenden Aaronson put Leeds 1-0 up at Elland Road inside 35 seconds, with the United States midfielder poking home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

But instead of going in for the kill thereafter, Leeds were tentative; they survived one scare when Ilan Meslier saved a penalty from Josh Tymon, but the French goalkeeper would soon turn into the villain. Just after the hour mark, Meslier fumbled a routine corner, and was punished dearly as Harry Darling slid in the equaliser. Leeds looked devoid of any kind of rhythm as Ampadu struggled and the likes of Daniel James, Manor Solomon and Joel Piroe offered next to nothing in the final third.

Swansea deserved at least a point, but incredibly, Wilfried Gnonto appeared to have stolen all three for Leeds in the 86th minute, as he drilled a first-time shot into the net just moments after coming on as a substitute. There was to be one last sting in the tail, though, as Zan Vipotnik fired past Meslier from a tight angle right at the death to send the Welsh fans in the away end into raptures.

Getty Images SportTime for changes

Meslier should have been able to parry Vipotnik's shot away from danger. It was well struck, but flew pretty much straight at the Frenchman, and when Leeds simply needed him to throw out a strong hand and push the ball away from danger, he was found wanting again.

Leeds have let too many wins slip away because of Meslier's ineptitude, including in the away fixtures against Hull City and Sunderland, and things reached a head following the Swansea draw where questions were being asked about Farke's judgement, and why on earth he was still sticking with Meslier when Karl Darlow was sat on the bench?

The ex-Norwich boss has acquiesced, however, and revealed on Thursday that he is set to make a change between the sticks for the run-in. Darlow, who made 52 Premier League appearances for Newcastle between 2014 and 2023, is the current Wales No.1, and a far more reliable pair of hands than Meslier, with the hope being that should shore up matters behind an otherwise pretty watertight defence.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Farke would also be wise to take Aaronson out of the firing line. The American's goal against Swansea was only his second since the turn of the year, which explains why he did not make the latest U.S. squad.

Aaronson continues to fill the No.10 slot because Farke doesn't feel he has anyone else capable, having seen reported January target Emi Buendia move to Bayer Leverkusen instead. It's high time that Farke revises that stance, particularly after Gnonto's latest cameo from the bench.

Getty Images SportUnleash Gnonto

Gnonto is the obvious alternative to Aaronson, but there is a feeling that Italian ace still hasn't convinced Farke after handing in a transfer request following Leeds' first game of the 2023-24 season. That ill-advised move led Farke to drop Gnonto for two weeks, and the 21-year-old has yet to win back the full trust of his manager to this day.

That's understandable, especially since Gnonto's application levels still fall slightly below the required standard, but he is a match-winner on his day, and Leeds could use his fresh legs. Farke's refusal to rotate his attackers backfired last term as the Whites ran out of steam, and making the same mistake would be unforgivable.

From the outside, it's obvious that the likes of Aaronson, Solomon, James and Piroe need a bit of rest, and there's no excuse for Farke not to give them it with Gnonto, Largie Ramazani, Mateo Joseph and – if he ever stays fit – Patrick Bamford waiting in the wings. At the very least, Leeds need Gnonto on the pitch for longer than 10 minutes at a time, especially in tight games that he can edge in their favour with moments of individual brilliance.

Man City in regular contact to sign "phenomenal" £120m star player for Pep

Desperately in need of reinforcements, Manchester City are now reportedly in regular contact to sign one of Europe’s best players worth as much as £120m ahead of 2025.

Man City transfer news

One win in 10 and entering this weekend’s fixtures off the back of conceding two late goals to lose the Manchester derby last time out, Manchester City are more wounded than they’ve ever been under Pep Guardiola, who has simply been out of answers. For the first time, their squad looks to have taken a wrong turn somewhere down the line; departures such as Cole Palmer’s look regretful and the Citizens must splash the cash.

Names such as Bruno Guimaraes and Florian Wirtz have already been mentioned, with City’s intention seemingly set on spending big to solve a problem before it becomes a crisis that permanently unclasps their grasp on English football.

Bruno Guimaraes against Manchester City

Guimaraes particularly stands out as the type of player capable of replacing the injured Rodri for the rest of the campaign, which instantly makes him one to watch if the Citizens decide to make a January statement. Meanwhile, those at The Etihad could look towards an alternative to Wirtz who is just as, if not more talented.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Manchester City are in regular contact over a potential move to sign Jamal Musiala and have already held talks with his representatives, given that his current Bayern Munich deal expires in 2026.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 19, 2024

Any deal will come far from cheap, however, with the Bundesliga giants reportedly slapping an eye-watering £120m price tag on one of their most prized assets. As Kevin de Bruyne prepares to depart as a free agent at the end of the season, however, City could flex their financial muscles.

"Phenomenal" Musiala could replace De Bruyne

There’s no doubt that replacing a player of De Bruyne’s talent will feel like an impossible mission for Manchester City, but turning towards Musiala would certainly be an instant step in the right direction.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

Whilst the German poses a different kind of threat to the combination of De Bruyne’s athletic engine and pure technical ability, Musiala is a danger man in his own right, often providing his best work in the tightest spaces.

It’s no surprise that praise has followed the midfielder throughout the early stages of his career, with former Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann telling reporters as relayed by Bayern Strikes after a 5-0 win over Hungary back in September: “Jamal has already undergone a great transformation in the past year in terms of his presence in the box. During the tournament it was very good, today it was phenomenal.”

Canada manager Jesse Marsch couldn't hide his frustration with the referee after his team's elimination in the Nations League semifinals following their 2-0 defeat to Mexico.

The match's biggest controversy came in the ninth minute when Edson Álvarez appeared to foul Derek Cornelius inside the box. Cornelius had gained position and touched the ball before the Mexican midfielder. Despite the clear contact, VAR chose not to call the foul, and play continued.

After Canada's elimination, Marsch spoke about the decision: "When you touch the ball first and then get kicked, it's a foul – no discussion. You can debate whether it's a penalty or not, but it was an unforgivable play that the referee let go."

In a painful defeat that included refereeing controversy, Canada were eliminated by Mexico in the Nations League semifinals. Marsch criticized the performance of Honduran referee Said Martínez, as well as the attitude of players, who, according to coach, "constantly tried to go down, pretending to be fouled." Marsch emphasized that his team needs to learn how to handle such situations. Canada failed to reach the final of the tournament and will have to wait to secure their first Nations League title.

"There is this cultural aspect of Mexican football where they look to go down easily and manage to get yellow cards. They know how to handle certain moments of the game, and that gives them an advantage," Marsch said. "Even Edson Álvarez, after the kick, went down to the ground."

Spurs struck gold selling 4/10 flop who’s been even worse than Kyle Walker

It’s been a bizarre season for Tottenham Hotspur so far this year.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have looked hopeless at times, such as in their losses to Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town, but simply electric in others, like the wins over Manchester United and Aston Villa.

However, the North Londoners’ 4-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday was so emphatic and so incredibly impressive that it could just be the catalyst for them to now go on a genuine run of good form.

James Maddison

That said, for all the brilliant displays on the side of the Lilywhites, there were plenty of abject ones on the side of the hosts, including former Spurs ace Kyle Walker, although as bad as he’s been this season, there is a former Tottenham defender who has been even worse.

Kyle Walker's dreadful season

Walker left for Spurs in the summer of 2017 to join City for a whopping £53m, which was a record for a full-back at the time, and while there was an adaptation time for the Englishman, it would be fair to say it’s been a move that’s since worked out.

Kyle Walker for Manchester City.

For example, in the seven and a half years since, the 34-year-old has made 311 appearances, in which he’s won six league titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, two Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and, of course, the Champions League.

However, time catches up with us all, and to say the former Spurs ace has deteriorated this season would be a massive understatement.

His decline was on full show against his old club on Saturday when he looked miles off the pace and was comfortably beaten by Timo Werner for the Lilywhites’ fourth goal.

Moreover, former professional Tony Cascarino described the Englishman’s performance as being similar to when Gareth Bale ran “Maicon, the great Brazilian full-back ragged,” and that it was a similar situation against Brighton & Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma earlier this month.

In all, it’s hard to look at Walker’s performances this season and not come to the conclusion that his career at the top level is coming to an end. Yet, there is another former Spurs defender who is younger and is having an even worse season than him this year.

The former Spurs player who's been worse than Walker

So, to cut straight to the point, the player in question is fellow full-back Emerson Royal.

emerson-royal-tottenham-hotspur-crystal-palace-premier-league-outstanding-revive-mason

The 25-year-old, who was described as a “liability” during his time with Spurs by Jamie O’Hara, joined Italian giants AC Milan in the summer for around £13m, in a transfer that Italian football writer Kaustubh Pandey described as “a deal for the ages,” but not for the right reasons.

Instead, he was shocked at how much the Italian giants were willing to pay for the Brazilian defender, as aside from very few glimpses here and there, he’s been dreadful since leaving N17.

For example, in the club’s game against Juventus over the weekend, Football Italia gave him a paltry 4/10 match rating, while he didn’t do much better in the clash with Cagliari either, with Gazzetta dello Sport giving him a 5.5/10.

In all, the São Paulo-born ace has made 14 appearances for Milan, 12 of which have been starts, of which six have ended with victories, three have ended in draws, and five have been defeats.

Ultimately, it’s hard to look at Emerson’s time at the San Siro as anything other than a complete disaster, especially when experts like James Horncastle write that his transfer to Milan ‘looks like the biggest donation in the history of Fondazione Milan as the club charitably tries to make his wish to become a footballer come true.’

Therefore, while Walker is having an undeniably poor season, another former Spurs full-back is having an even worse one.
