Spurs in contact to sign "superstar" rival for Dominic Solanke

Ange Postecoglou’s tenure as Tottenham Hotspur manager has been challenging to say the least.

The Australian has undoubtedly brought back the entertainment factor, but he’s also failed to eliminate the inconsistent streak that has seen them lose at home to Ipswich Town and then beat Manchester City 4-0 away in their next game.

He has also had mixed luck in the transfer market, as players like Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner have arguably flopped, while Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke have been important goalscorers this season.

That said, while the club has a few wingers to choose from, they do not have a genuine rival for the Englishman, although, based on recent reports, that could be about to change.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Spurs are one of several clubs, including Arsenal, who Randal Kolo Muani’s representatives have contacted over the last week over a potential move.

The French international has found himself out of favour at Paris Saint-Germain and has been told to look for a new club elsewhere, with a move to England reportedly his preference.

The report claims that the Parisians would prefer to sell the forward this month but would be willing to accept a loan move, which could be perfect for Spurs, especially if they can agree on a deal with an obligation to buy in the summer.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

It could be a complicated deal to get over the line, but given Kolo Muani’s incredible ability and potential, signing him on a short-term loan to rival Solanke seems like a no-brainer, even if he is earning a whopping £202k-per-week.

Why Kolo Muani would be great competition for Solanke

Okay, so the first thing to say is that if you were to base your opinion solely on his form this season, you may not think Kolo Munai would be a good rival for Solanke.

After all, the Frenchman has just three goal involvements to his name in 14 appearances, to the Englishman’s 15 in 25.

However, as we mentioned above, the PSG ace has received limited minutes this year, and when he has played a considerable amount in campaigns prior, he has delivered.

For example, just last year, the “ice-cold” striker, as dubbed by German legend Lothar Matthaus, scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 44 appearances, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.44 games.

Moreover, the season before that, he did even better, scoring a mind-blowing 23 goals and providing 17 assists in 46 appearances, which equates to a staggering average of a goal involvement every 1.15.

Finally, while the 26-year-old’s raw output hasn’t been brilliant this season, his underlying numbers have been across the last 365 days.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, the attacking “superstar,” as dubbed by Matthaus, sits in the top 3% of forwards for successful take-ons, the top 7% for progressive passes received, the top 10% for non-penalty expected goals and the top 11% for assists, all per 90.

Ultimately, while it wouldn’t necessarily be advisable for Spurs to sign Kolo Muani on a permanent deal next month, he is more than good enough to come in on a short-term loan and provide Solanke with some much-needed competition.

Why RB Leipzig are now worried about Xavi Simons after Liverpool approach

Liverpool have made an enquiry about signing one of world football’s most revered young midfielders, and his club are worried, according to a new report from Germany.

Liverpool transfer news

Liverpool are flying high at the top of the Premier League and Champions League, but Arne Slot isn’t ready to rest on his laurels heading into the second-half of the season. The Dutchman is reportedly looking to strengthen his squad, with a number of names already being linked.

Among those being touted for a potential move to Anfield are Fulham’s American full-back Antonee Robinson, Sporting star Geovany Quenda and even Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk.

Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram is also interesting the Reds, according to Calcio Mercato, which claims the Merseyside club are are eyeing Thuram, the son of France legend Lilian Thuram, as a possible replacement for Darwin Nunez, who has been tipped to leave Anfield in the near future.

The 27-year-old is Serie A’s second-top scorer this season with 10 goals in 15 games, and has previously been described as “an exceptional player of the highest international class” by his former Borussia Monchengladbach manager, Daniel Farke.

Simons enquiry leaves loan club worried

According to a new report from Sport Bild, Liverpool are also one of a number of clubs interested in signing RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons. The Dutchman is currently on-loan at Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain, and Bild claim that the German club are exploring the possibility of making the move permanent following an impressive season-and-a-half at the Red Bull Arena.

The publication says that Leipzig want to open talks with PSG as soon as possible, but that they will face two major roadblocks in their pursuit to land Simons permanently. The first is that PSG are expected to demand around £67 million for the 21-year-old, a figure which is outside of Leipzig’s budget.

The second is that a host of major European clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, and Inter Milan, also want him, and have all recently made contact to find out about his future plans.

Bild claims that moving forward Simons wants to play Champions League football and have a chance at winning titles, neither of which Leipzig can guarantee, leaving the Bundesliga outfit worried about losing their star man.

Simons has earned praise from all corners of the footballing world for his performances for Leipzig, former club PSV Eindhoven and the Dutch national team. Earlier this year, Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund described him as an “exceptional” player.

“He is a very good player. He had a very good European Championship and a great season with Leipzig,” Freund said. “He’s developed really well. I think he’s going to have a really good career at the highest level. He has everything, mentality, character.”

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, once said of Simons: “The drive he has, the passion with which he conquers balls and recognises situations are top. His enormous drive as well – that is almost un-Dutch. I think you can see that he was trained abroad. He almost has a southern European doggedness in his game.”

Nkrumah Bonner's masterclass in patience gives West Indies first-innings lead

Bonner racks up 123 in marathon knock as hosts build 62-run buffer

Nkrumah Bonner played an innings of patience, resilience and reward to mirror his international career with a hard-earned century guiding West Indies to a first-innings lead over England.Bonner fell for 123 shortly before stumps on the third day in Antigua, to the elation of England’s bowlers who had done it tough on a benign pitch against a stubborn West Indies line-up. Veerasammy Permaul offered keen resistance to remain unbeaten on 26 at stumps with Jayden Seales yet to score and the hosts 62 runs ahead. At the age of 33, Bonner raised the second century of his fledgling Test career, which is only 10 matches old and began in February last year – almost a decade after he made his international debut in a T20 against England at the Oval in 2011. Bonner played just one more T20I, in March 2012, before eventually earning a recall to the West Indies set-up, initially in January last year for three ODIs in Bangladesh before playing two Tests on that same tour. His first Test ton had come at the same ground as this one, a similarly attritional 113 not out in a Player-of-the-Match performance in the drawn first Test with Sri Lanka. On this occasion, he batted for nine hours to lead West Indies’ recovery from 127 for 4, build a small but potentially crucial lead and put merciless miles in the legs of an England attack without – no, not – an injured Mark Wood, who disappeared to the changing room shortly before lunch having bowled just five overs for the day and 17 for the match before succumbing to an elbow problem.Bonner resumed on 34 not out and with West Indies 109 runs in arrears, having helped haul the hosts back into the contest in partnership with Jason Holder after the tumble of wickets had all but ruined the solid foundation laid by an 83-run opening stand on day two.Holder fell to Ben Stokes – and his own indecision – early on the third day, adding just two runs to his overnight 43 before making a late move to leave one around off stump and edged a catch to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, ending his union with Bonner at 79.Stokes almost had Bonner, on 40 at the time, attempting to pull a bouncer which looped towards midwicket, where substitute fielder Ollie Pope dived forward but couldn’t manage to grasp it.Bonner brought up his fifty prodding a single through the covers and he faced another 15 balls for his next scoring shot, launching Wood over the fence at fine leg for six off a top edge.He had a life on 73, when Zak Crawley spilled an edge off Jack Leach at slip, but reached his century off 257 deliveries on the second ball of the evening session, sweeping a Leach half-volley on leg stump behind square for four. Bonner celebrated with a relieved sigh as he embraced Kemar Roach, with whom he ultimately shared a partnership to follow the theme of the day – patience – worth 44 off 173 balls for the eighth wicket. But when Bonner nudged Leach to backward point and the pair dashed off for a single, they were chancing the arm of Pope, who fired the ball to the striker’s end and Foakes removed the bails with Roach just shy of his crease. Roach had provided steadfast support to Bonner, facing 89 balls for his 15 runs.Twice England thought they had Bonner lbw to Leach but they failed to overturn Joel Wilson’s decisions, upheld on umpire’s call with ball-tracking suggesting it was clipping leg stump on both occasions. Bonner was also given out lbw to Stokes on 121 but successfully reviewed after getting an inside edge. They finally broke through when captain Joe Root, running out of ideas, brought Dan Lawrence into the attack to almost immediate effect as Bonner feathered his fifth delivery to Foakes down the leg side, although it took an England review to overturn umpire Gregory Brathwaite’s not-out decision with replays showing the faintest of edges.Stokes ended up bowling 28 overs – with 2 for 42 to show for it – his heaviest innings workload since 2015, having only just returned to bowling after breaking down with a side strain in the fourth Ashes Test.Much had been made of England’s 12-match stretch without breaking the 300-mark before Jonny Bairstow’s century led them to 311 in their first innings here, but West Indies had endured a virtually identical run dating back to the second Test against Sri Lanka in Antigua last March.Their ability to forge partnerships was key as they passed the milestone on Thursday, all but the first one held together by Bonner, on a day when 171 runs were scored from 90.1 overs. His most-substantial stand of the day came with Joshua Da Silva, who wisely reviewed his lbw dismissal to Craig Overton when on 16, but there was no such reprieve shortly after lunch when Leach, who at that point had bowled well for no reward, rapped him on the back pad with one that skidded onto the knee roll. Da Silva’s review failed this time, with replays showing the ball was hitting leg stump, but he had already helped add another 73 valuable runs.

Spurs prepare for Galatasaray trip after 4-1 win over Aston Villa

A good last seven days for Spurs was complemented by Ange Postecoglou’s side securing a statement 4-1 win at home to Premier League top four rivals Aston Villa on Sunday, with Dominic Solanke’s brace, a late goal by James Maddison and Brennan Johnson’s equaliser putting Unai Emery to the sword.

However, as we’ve recently seen, things are rarely straightforward where Spurs are concerned.

Their 3-2 slump at Brighton, where they squandered a two-goal lead at half-time, and defeat to lowly Crystal Palace highlights that they are still pretty vulnerable on their worst days – and that is something Postecoglou needs to rectify if they’re going to make good on his promise of silverware this season.

Off the field, Tottenham’s wider recruitment team could assist in the transition from European qualification contenders to genuine title challengers. The north Londoners reportedly have plans for January, with Espanyol winger Javi Puado among the transfer targets at Spurs as Postecoglou seeks new attackers.

Amid uncertainty surrounding Timo Werner, who has been criticised for his wasteful finishing in front of goal, there are suggestions that Tottenham are pushing their recruitment team to look at new forwards ahead of 2025.

The German scored his first goal since March in their win over City last week, which tells the entire story, with Werner consistently finding himself in good positions to score but failing more often than not.

Another attacking option or two, who could alternate with Werner, may be an option seriously worth considering in the winter.

Tottenham considering January deal for Arda Guler

According to reports out of Spain this week, Real Madrid starlet Arda Guler, who’s struggled for game time under Carlo Ancelotti, is on their agenda for January.

The Turkey international starred for his country at the Euros, helping them to an unlikely quarter-final run, and his quality hasn’t gone unnoticed at N17. It is believed Tottenham are considering a January deal for Guler, and he could join them on loan, as the Galacticos consider whether to let him go on a temporary deal to further his development.

It could be a doable transfer for Spurs, and it isn’t lost on pundits just how Guler can shine on his day. Called “exceptional” by Jose Mourinho, TNT Sports Commentator Ian Darke also weighed in recently – saying he would be a “fantastic” signing for Postecoglou.

“Guler would be a fantastic pickup for Tottenham – he’s a very good young player. He just can’t get in the Real Madrid side because they’ve got Rodrygo, Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Mbappe,” Darke explained.

“He shone at the Euros and he’ll be frustrated that he doesn’t get on the pitch very much at all. I see Real Madrid a lot. But whether they’d let him go in January, I’m not sure. Once they clinched the title last season they gave him a run of games, and he interestingly came up with a flurry of goals. If you’re talking about signing some class, he’s definitely that.”

Alexander Isak’s first-half strike and an own goal from Axel Disasi moments later meant Eddie Howe’s home side cruised into the quarter-finals at the expense of Chelsea, who are now competing on three fronts instead of all four.

It was a much-changed Chelsea side which beat Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday, as Maresca gave the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Benoit Badiashile, Filip Jorgensen and Disasi a chance to stake their claim for a more regular starting place.

Chelsea were urged to start Jadon Sancho against Newcastle before their trip to the North East, but the summer signing missed out on a place in the squad due to illness, and Maresca really could’ve used his presence.

“We need to get better at many things but we didn’t concede any chances from the press two days ago against them and the reason why was because we contact not with the first line,” said Maresca on Chelsea’a 2-0 loss to Newcastle.

“The other day was Moi [Caicedo] and Romeo [Lavia] and today was Enzo [Fernandez], Renato [Veiga] and Marc [Cucurella] and we always tried to contact with the second line. The reason why is because we knew they are very aggressive. We did very well two days ago. I think we did very well apart from the goals we conceded but for sure, we have many things we can do better.”

Chelsea eyeing ambitious move for Jamal Musiala

Off the field, BlueCo and Boehly are devising transfer strategies ahead of 2025, and it is believed they’re in the running to sign Bayern Munich superstar Jamal Musiala.

The Germany international reportedly commands a £151 million price tag, but Musiala’s contract situation is described as uncertain and set to expire in 2026, meaning interested sides could poach him for cheaper if he doesn’t commit to fresh terms.

Germany star Jamal Musiala

CaughtOffside state that Chelsea are eyeing a move to re-sign Musiala, who was once a member of their Cobham academy, with Man United and Liverpool also keeping tabs on his situation at the Allianz Arena.

The “exceptional” 21-year-old has already bagged seven goals and four assists in all competitions and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s rising stars, so Bayern will be desperate to stop Musiala from making a return to west London.

Everton now keen to sign unwanted £35k-p/w Premier League talent in January

Everton are eyeing up a potential cut-price January move to sign an unwanted Premier League defender, it has been reported, with Sean Dyche looking to bolster his side’s backline.

Everton slowly improving

A disappointing 1-0 defeat to previously winless Southampton left Everton 16th in the Premier League, but there had been signs of progress before the defeat to the Saints. The Toffees had gone their previous four games unbeaten, having picked up two wins in that time as they managed three points against struggling duo Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town.

They had also managed to stem the flow of goals that they were conceding, with Dyche’s side proving uncharacteristically leaky in defence during the opening games of the season.

It follows a summer where they parted ways with Amadou Onana but added talent across the squad, with the likes of Jake O’Brien, Jesper Lindstrom and Tim Iroegbunam all yet to truly demonstrate their ability at Goodison Park, though Lindstrom has seen the most action to date.

Everton winger Jesper Lindstrom

With money tight on Merseyside amid a new stadium being built, the Toffees are on the lookout for any market opportunity to upgrade their squad on a budget, and now may have just been presented with one.

Everton eyeing Premier League defender

Now, a fresh report from Africa Foot claim that Everton are keeping a close eye on Brighton and Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey as they weigh up a potential swoop for the flying fullback.

Bursting onto the scene with the Seagulls, Lamptey was linked with clubs across the top flight, but a series of injuries have hampered his career to date. He has played just 10 minutes of Premier League football this season, and started just 10 games last season.

As a result, he is set to leave Brighton in 2025, with his £35,000 a week deal at the AMEX stadium due to expire at the end of the campaign.

And Everton could be a potential destination for the fullback, with the report claiming that the Toffees “have already expressed an interest in signing him” and that Lamptey has “expressed a desire to leave Brighton”.

For his part, Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler “would be open to letting him leave”, while Lamptey is keen to remain in the Premier League. The Seagulls want to move Lamptey on in January though, while they can still receive a fee for the 24 year old, which could force Everton into action midseason.

Lamptey was described as a “unique” player by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, who added: “He is an important, important player for us. He can play full-back, winger.”

He would certainly represent a younger alternative to current right-back options Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman, while providing cover for the injury-prone Nathan Patterson. Could Everton take a gamble on his own injuries to land him in January?

Liverpool keeping tabs on record-breaking teenager in potential £12.5m deal

Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of a record-breaking youngster in a potential £12.5m deal, according to Sky Sports journalist Patrick Berger.

Latest Liverpool news

After a quiet summer transfer window, Reds supporters will be hoping to see fresh faces come in soon, whether that be in January or next summer. Benfica midfielder Orkun Kokcu has been mentioned as a possible target, with the 23-year-old having a reported £126m release clause in his current deal, highlighting how much he is valued by the Portuguese giants.

Arne Slot could still be looking for another player in the middle of the park, having missed out on Martin Zubimendi during the summer, and the Turk could be an ideal alternative to the Real Sociedad ace, presuming the Reds can whittle down that release clause.

Benfica midfielderOrkun Kokcu.

Meanwhile, long-term replacements for Virgil van Dijk will need to keep being looked at, even though the Dutchman still has plenty of years left in him, and Vitor Reis has been linked with a move to Liverpool. The 18-year-old Palmeiras centre-back is considered a big talent, with his own release clause believed to be a whopping £84m.

Amid concerns over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Anfield, Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries has also emerged as a rumoured target for the Reds, with his current employers reportedly concerned that a deal has already been struck.

Liverpool keen on signing record-breaking teenager

Writing on X on Monday, Sky Germany’s Berger claimed that Liverpool are among the clubs interested in signing Serbia teenager Andrija Maksimovic, potentially getting the attacking midfielder for as little as £12.5m.

Maksimovic made history last weekend, as Berger mentions in his update, becoming the youngest player in Serbia’s history, making his debut in his country’s 2-0 win at home to Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League. Still just 17, the teenage attacking midfielder looks to have an enormous future in the game, having already been linked with a switch to Newcastle United in recent weeks.

Away from his record-breaking feats for Serbia at senior level, Maksimovic also scored an incredible 29 goals in just 26 appearances for Red Star Belgrade’s Under-17s, as well as nine in 29 outings for dual side Graficar Beograd.
