Eddie Howe's demand becomes clear as Newcastle enter pole position for Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay could be on his way back to the Premier League after Newcastle United entered the race to secure his signature alongside a number of rivals.

The Magpies, with their PSR problems behind them, have set their sights on building a side capable of staying inside the Premier League’s top four and that may start with their midfield.

Already, those at St James’ Park have tied Sandro Tonali down to a new deal at the club after holding secret talks with the Italian and now rumours are emerging as to who could join the former AC Milan man.

Elliot Anderson for Nottingham Forest

At 25 years old, Tonali is increasingly likely to play a key role under Eddie Howe for years to come and Newcastle could even decide to build the heart of their side around the midfielder, whilst also pursuing the likes of Elliot Anderson.

The Nottingham Forest star has been linked with a return to Tyneside just over a year since leaving Newcastle for the Midlands in what would be a sensational move.

Howe even went as far as to admit that there’s some regret that Newcastle were left with no choice but to sell Anderson amid PSR problems last year. That alone suggests that he’d be more than happy to welcome the England international back with open arms.

By signing Anderson just after securing Tonali’s future, PIF could also be opening the door for a Ballon d’Or nominee to take his place in Newcastle’s midfield.

Newcastle in pole position to sign Scott McTominay

Newcastle are now in pole position to sign McTominay from Napoli alongside Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, according to TeamTalk. Both sides are reportedly joined by Barcelona in the race to welcome the Scotland international, who is also expected to be offered a new deal in Italy.

When McTominay left Manchester United in 2024, the Red Devils were happy to show him the door. Now, over a year later, he has the world at his feet and was even a 2025 Ballon d’Or nominee. His rise has been sensational, and he could yet make a return to England to end some unfinished business.

Not just Joelinton: Newcastle's "true legend" may now be on borrowed time

To no surprise, Howe also reportedly believes McTominay is the perfect fit for his Newcastle side and views him as someone who would help the Magpies stay in the Champions League.

Described as “special” by former Man United boss Jose Mourinho, the midfielder has finally realised his full potential and now has another big decision to make.

Arsenal's £30m flop enduring nightmare on loan after picking up second red card in only five games for new club

Fabio Vieira’s spell at Hamburg has gone from bad to worse after the Arsenal loanee was sent off for the second time in just five Bundesliga games. The 25-year-old midfielder, who joined the German club on a season-long loan in the summer, lost his cool during a 4-1 defeat to Koln, receiving a second yellow card late on as HSV slumped to their fourth loss of the season.

  • Arsenal loanee Vieira sent off for the second time for HSV

Vieira had another nightmare outing for Hamburg as he was dismissed for protesting with the referee during a 4-1 defeat to Koln in the Bundesliga. The Portuguese playmaker, on loan from Arsenal, had earlier seen a potential goal ruled out for offside before his frustration boiled over in the closing stages. Vieira’s sending-off came just four minutes after team-mate Immanuel Pherai was also dismissed, leaving Hamburg to finish the game with nine men.

Koln had already taken control through goals from Ragnar Ache and Florian Kainz before Jean-Luc Dompe briefly gave Hamburg hope with a strike in the 61st minute. However, with two players sent off in the final 10 minutes, the visitors collapsed defensively, conceding twice in stoppage time to Said El Mala and Jakub Kaminski. It was a costly night all around, as Hamburg dropped to 13th in the table with only eight points from their opening fixtures.

For Vieira, the red card was his second in five league appearances for the club, compounding what has been a disastrous start to his spell in Germany. His earlier dismissal, for a high challenge on Leopold Querfeld during a goalless draw with Union Berlin, resulted in a two-match suspension handed down by the German FA. The latest incident is likely to bring further scrutiny on the Arsenal loanee, and he will be suspended for two more games due to this being his second sending-off of the season.

Playmaker unlikely to return to Arsenal

Vieira’s move to Hamburg was meant to be a chance for the 25-year-old to rebuild confidence after two underwhelming years at Arsenal. Signed from Porto in 2022 for around £30 million ($39.5m). However, consistent opportunities under Mikel Arteta were limited, with the Portugal youth international managing just three Premier League starts across two seasons.

Despite showing glimpses of promise, including scoring the winning penalty in Arsenal’s 2023 Community Shield triumph over Manchester City, Vieira struggled to adapt to the physical demands of English football. A return to Porto on loan last season seemed to rejuvenate him, as he contributed five goals and six assists across 42 appearances. Those performances earned him another loan move, this time to Hamburg, who saw him as a key figure in their first season in the Bundesliga after seven years in the second tier.

Instead, Vieira’s stint in Germany has been marred by indiscipline and inconsistency. His two red cards have overshadowed any flashes of quality, and with Hamburg’s results faltering, patience is wearing thin among supporters.

Arsenal signed Vieira in 2022 as a promising talent

Vieira’s recent struggles are a far cry from his rise at Porto, where he emerged as one of Portugal’s brightest young midfielders alongside current Paris Saint-Germain superstar Vitinha. The playmaker played over 100 senior matches for his boyhood club, winning multiple domestic titles and representing Portugal at various youth levels. His form during the 2021–22 campaign, when he helped Porto to a league title, convinced Arsenal to make their £30m move.

At Arsenal, Vieira has made 49 appearances across all competitions, recording two goals and six assists. He has sometimes impressed in cup fixtures but found it difficult to displace Martin Odegaard and other midfielders in Arteta’s preferred midfield setup. His technical ability was never in question, yet his lack of physicality and consistency made it hard to establish a regular starting role in the Premier League.

  • What does Vieira's troublesome loan spell mean for his career?

Hamburg’s immediate concern will be steadying their form ahead of next week’s clash, as they look to climb away from the lower reaches of the table. Head coach Merlin Polzin and the club’s hierarchy must decide whether to continue relying on Vieira once his suspension ends, or look elsewhere for stability in midfield.

The coming months are crucial in determining Vieira's long-term future at both club and international level. Arsenal will be monitoring his progress closely, but with Arteta’s midfield already stacked with options, a path back into the first team looks increasingly unlikely.

"Absolutely true" – Man Utd have "approached" star's camp to hijack Man City move

Manchester United are looking to kick on under Ruben Amorim after the win against Sunderland and could now look to beat Manchester City to a statement signing in the January window.

Manchester United look to elevate themselves in Premier League

Undoubtedly, the Red Devils have taken time to get going this season, and their start hasn’t been plain sailing as they integrate new signings and try to find their best starting line-up.

Nevertheless, a victory over Sunderland has restored morale at Old Trafford and has relieved some pressure on Amorim’s situation at the club, which will give supporters some cause for optimism as Manchester United head for the international break.

Oliver Glasner has been linked to the Red Devils’ hotseat, and there will be other names mentioned if results begin to take another dip, but Amorim appears safe for now and will hope his side can kick on over the coming weeks.

With international breaks splitting the season into mini-blocks, the January transfer window isn’t actually too far down the line and rumours are already beginning to circulate regarding who could come in to improve Manchester United’s squad.

Reports suggest that the Red Devils are fighting Manchester City to sign Atletico Madrid full-back Nahuel Molina in a deal that could be worth in the region of £26 million.

Truthfully, it remains to be seen if spending power is there after a summer window that saw £250 million shelled out at Old Trafford. PSR rules will need to be respected, and January is a notoriously hard month to conclude business.

Still, Manchester United may not be done in their quest to pip Manchester City to signings if recent developments are to evolve.

Man Utd look to pip Man City to sign Aleksandar Pavlovic

According to SportBild’s Tobias Altschäffl, Manchester United have made an approach via intermediaries for Bayern Munich star Aleksandar Pavlovic and he is now firmly on their radar alongside rivals Manchester City, who have been strongly linked with the player for weeks.

He said when asked by Christian Falk about his situation: “Juventus Turin and Paris are not yet so moving. With the English, this is absolutely true. It is known that the Pavlović side was approached via intermediaries. They would like to get Pavlović. At City, he’s even higher on the list.”

Making his presence felt at the Bundesliga holders, Pavlovic has made seven appearances across all competitions this term, scoring once against Hamburg.

Primarily a holding midfielder, the Germany international could well be a long-term replacement for Casemiro. Still, the Red Devils will need to convince him that their project is worth investing in, amid a run of inconsistent results this term.

Yankees Commit Three Defensive Blunders in Fifth-Inning Meltdown

It appeared the New York Yankees were on their way to forcing a Game 6 in commanding fashion when they opened up an early 5–0 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.

That lead disappeared in a matter of minutes.

After Kike Hernandez led off the inning with a base hit, the Yankees continued to shoot themselves in the foot for the rest of the frame. Tommy Edman reached base when Aaron Judge dropped a routine fly ball, which was his first error of the 2024 season, and Will Smith got aboard on a throwing error from Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe.

With the bases loaded, Yankees starter Gerrit Cole whiffed Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani for the inning's first two outs. And when he got Mookie Betts to hit a soft ground ball to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, it appeared the Yankees would get out of the inning with no harm done.

But Cole didn't cover first base, and Betts beat Rizzo to the bag to bring home a run.

Los Angeles was just getting started. The Dodgers scored four more runs that inning to tie the game at five runs apiece, with Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez bringing in a pair apiece. All in all, the Dodgers sent 10 batters to the plate and scored all five runs with two outs.

An epic meltdown at Yankee Stadium. An epic meltdown that could cost New York a chance at another World Series championship.

The MLB world was astounded by the Yankees' unforgivable mistakes:

If the Yankees can rally back for a Game 5 win, they'll force Game 6 at Dodger Stadium on Friday night. But if they can't, those fifth-inning blunders will haunt them for the entire offseason.

Miami Marlins Set Record for Doing a Bunch of Bad Things While Winning Baseball Game

The Miami Marlins haven't had much to play for over the past few months. Far removed from playoff contention right out of the gates, they've struggled mightily, as evidenced by their 100 losses on the year. But the opportunity to play spoiler can breath life into a team and crazy things can happen. Like they did Thursday night in Minneapolis as the Marlins squandered a four-run lead, did a bunch of other stuff that usually proves fatal to the goal of winning and … still walked away with an 8-6 victory in 13 innings that put the Twins on the brink of elimination.

In addition to coughing away a nice cushion, the Marlins struck out 20 times, left 15 runners stranded on base, did not hit a longball, and committed two errors. No team in the history of baseball, which touts nearly a quarter of a million games, had ever survived all that to win.

It's probably not a night that Marlins fans will have any particular reason to remember. Twins fans, on the other hand, will rue the night—and so many other nights down the stretch—where they failed to capitalize and keep their team from taking on even more water. As of this morning their chances of making the postseason have dropped all the way to about 4 percent. But as we were reminded again on Thursday night, anything is possible in baseball.

Snoop Dogg now tells Celtic to hire one manager who Hoops fans "would love"

Rapper Snoop Dogg has opened up about investing in Celtic, also talking up the idea of one manager he wants to see at Parkhead.

The Hoops’ search for their next boss is ongoing, as they look to find the perfect successor to Brendan Rodgers, following a disappointing end to his reign.

Club Brugge manager Nicky Hayen has arguably emerged as the front-runner to take charge at Parkhead, with Celtic willing to give him big wages, enticing him to the club in the process.

Hayen is far from the only contender to come in, though, with England Under-21s boss Lee Carsley mentioned as an option, having been praised by Roy Keane in the past: “For England, it’s all positive. The big players performed, young players stepped up. Lee Carsley deserves huge praise. They really looked like they enjoyed it. They didn’t seem to be under that much pressure and played with freedom.”

Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou is currently out of work and has been linked with a return to Celtic, and now a new claim has dropped regarding a potential reunion.

Snoop Dogg wants Postecoglou back at Celtic

In quotes provided by The Daily Record, Snoop Dogg discussed Postecoglou coming back to Celtic, as well as opening up about investing in the club.

Opinion may be split regarding Postecoglou coming back to Celtic, although it does look unlikely, not least because his reputation has been damaged compared to when he left Parkhead last time around.

The Australian may have won the Europa League with Tottenham, but he also finished 17th in the Premier League, which ultimately cost him his job, before lasting no time at all at Nottingham Forest.

For that reason, this could be a sensible time for Celtic to avoid Postecoglou, instead looking at Hayen or someone else, bringing new ideas to the club in the process.

West Ham brewing Noble 2.0 who knows "what it means to wear the shirt"

The atmosphere around West Ham United at the moment is starting to feel rather toxic.

Nuno Espírito Santo was able to earn a point and inspire an impressive fightback in his opening game away to Everton, but since then, things have gone from bad to worse.

A loss away to Arsenal is understandable, but the defeats to Brentford and Leeds United were diabolical, and some major changes are needed to inspire the side to Premier League survival this term.

Therefore, while it’s risky, Nuno should look to play a few of the club’s promising academy talents, including one who could develop into a future Mark Nobel-type figure for them.

The West Ham youngsters Nuno should give a chance

Now, it should be said that if West Ham were playing even remotely well this season, then bringing in a few youngsters would probably be a bad idea.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, as things stand, the East Londoners are the second-worst team in the league, so it’s probably worth throwing in some promising prospects, as at least they would give it everything and help address the side’s dire lack of athleticism.

One of those who should be given a go is 20-year-old Mohamadou Kanté, who just signed a new deal with the club.

The “colossal” French midfielder, as dubbed by one analyst, is a particularly promising talent and has even been compared to former Hammer “Mo Diame” for his “intelligent composed passing” and “long-ranging legs that eat up ground.”

On top of having that pace and power, which is severely lacking in Nuno’s squad, the youngster is also proving to be something of a goal threat for the junior sides.

For example, despite playing in central and defensive midfield, he has already scored and assisted two goals in nine appearances for the U21s this season.

Speaking of goalscoring prospects, with Niclas Füllkrug out and Callum Wilson simply not good enough, it might be time to give Josh Landers a go in the first team.

So far this season, the 18-year-old Scotsman has scored five goals in six appearances for the U21s, totalling just 359 minutes.

Finally, it might be time to give Preston Fearon a proper runout with the senior side.

The 18-year-old gem made an appearance during pre-season and has been described as a “special player” by Jarrod Bowen, who added that he’s “never seen someone nutmeg so many people in training.”

With all that said, there is another, slightly older academy graduate who has played for the first team, but should now be getting even more minutes, someone who could be a future Noble.

West Ham's future Noble

Now, while someone like Fearon could go on to emulate some of the best qualities of a Noble, he’s still only 18, and so it’s difficult to predict what sort of player he’ll become.

The same is not necessarily true of Freddie Potts.

There is still a long way to go in the 22-year-old’s career, but even so, there are already some key similarities between him and the West Ham legend.

Firstly, he is very much one of the Hammers’ own, as he spent his entire youth career with the East Londoners and has only played for other teams while out on loan.

Moreover, he is a fan of the club, and so when the supporters sang “Freddie Potts, he’s one of our own” away to Everton earlier this season, it was one of those rare occasions when that phrase is entirely true.

This is also why journalist Dan Woffenden said that, unlike some of the other players in the squad today, he “at least understands what it means to wear the shirt.”

On top of all this, the Barking-born ace is also positionally similar to the Irons legend, with his best position being in the middle of the park.

Furthermore, while he isn’t likely to go on any mazy runs or score wonder goals like some other midfielders, he looks to be a reliable, no-nonsense throwback of a footballer.

That’s not to say he cannot help out with attacking phases of play, though, as respected analyst Ben Mattinson has described the 22-year-old as someone blessed with an impressive “passing range and powerful carrying” ability.

Ultimately, Noble is a legend, and while West Ham aren’t going to find someone just like him, Potts looks like he could develop into the modern version of him for Nuno this season.

What Man Utd are ready to do to hijack Real Madrid's move for Marc Guehi

A hugely encouraging transfer update has now emerged regarding Manchester United’s attempts to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

The 25-year-old has developed into one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, and is also looking highly likely to start for England at the 2026 World Cup next summer. For now, he has remained coy about his future, with his Palace deal expiring at the end of this season.

“For me, it doesn’t really matter, to be honest. As long as I’m playing well and helping Palace, there’s definitely an opportunity for me to be here as I am today.

“Whether it’s sorted or not, it’s not really the most important thing to be honest. Personally, I don’t know if I can think that far ahead. I like to just take it step by step, and that is just focusing on the games that I have at Palace and any upcoming opportunities I have here.”

United’s rivals Liverpool were extremely close to signing Guehi on deadline day, with a £35m fee even agreed, while Real Madrid have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

Man Utd want to hijack Real Madrid's move for Guehi

Now, Defensa Central report that Manchester United are looking to hijack Real Madrid’s move for Guehi, seeing the England international as a great option to bring in.

The Red Devils are willing to offer a “huge sum” of money for his services, in what looks set to be an auction for his signature in 2026. This presumably applies to wages rather than a transfer fee, though, considering he will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

It is no wonder that Guehi is a man in demand currently, with the Englishman’s performances for Palace proving to be immaculate in recent years, helping the Eagles win the FA Cup last season.

There is such an unruffled nature about him, and while he is far from the biggest, he uses great positional sense and intelligence to his advantage, being lauded by Stephen Warnock recently, who also talked about the idea of him joining Liverpool over United, which may not go down too well with Red Devils fans.

“Marc Guehi is a magnificent player. My concern for him is I hope he still gets that move to Liverpool. He deserves to play on the bigger stage, which is Champions League football. He has the ability to play at a club like Liverpool.”

With all due respect to Palace, next summer is the right time for Guehi to enjoy a new challenge at a bigger club, and if United were able to sign him, it would feel like a major coup.

Rodgers already has Bobby Clark-type star who's "going to thrive" at Celtic

A report emerged earlier this week that claimed that Celtic were set to complete a deal to sign Bobby Clark from RB Salzburg in the January transfer window.

It was said that the Hoops were on course to tie up a £6m move for the former Liverpool starlet, who is currently on loan at Derby County in England.

However, CeltsAreHere have since reported that there has not been any contact over a deal for Clark, which suggests that the Scottish Premiership giants are not on the verge of securing his signature.

Why Celtic should not sign Bobby Clark

Celtic should avoid a deal to sign Bobby Clark for £6m in January, as they appear to be doing with CeltsAreHere’s latest update, because he has struggled for form since leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2024.

Clark joined Salzburg for £10m from the Premier League giants and was sent out on loan to Derby this summer after a disappointing debut campaign in Austria.

As you can see in the table above, the 20-year-old midfielder has scored one goal and failed to provide any assists at league level since the start of last season, losing 65% of his defensive duels in that time too.

These statistics suggest that he would not add any immediate quality to the Celtic squad, offensively or defensively, which is why the club should not pay £6m to sign him in January.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

On top of concerns over his form, Celtic should not sign Clark from Salzburg because they already have their own version of him in Arne Engels.

Why Arne Engels is a Bobby Clark-type player

Per FBref, Clark was the fourth-most statistically comparable central midfielder to Engels in the 2024/25 campaign in the Champions League.

The chart above shows that they both excelled in similar areas of the game, hence the comparison, but the Belgium international was significantly more effective as a creative force for his team, with more assists and xAG per 90.

Engels, who was signed from Augsburg for a club-record £11m fee, is also similar to Clark in terms of the kind of signing he was, as a young player who was brought in to develop and improve in value, as Salzburg attempted to do with the Englishman.

The 22-year-old starlet enjoyed a strong first season with the Scottish giants. He scored ten goals and provided 13 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, although eight of those goals came from the penalty spot.

U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed that Engels is “going to thrive” at Parkhead, but his form has taken a turn for the worse in the 2025/26 campaign.

The Belgian whiz has no goals and one assist in 12 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which shows that his form in front of goal has suffered a dip, much like Clark’s since his move to Salzburg.

This is another reason why the Hoops do not need to sign the Derby County loanee in January, because they already have a young and promising central midfielder who is in need of a turnaround in form to get his career back on track.

Celtic paid £11m to sign Engels, which is £5m more than they may have to pay to sign Clark, and Brendan Rodgers should currently be looking at ways to get the midfield talent back to his very best at Parkhead so that £11m does not become a wasted investment.

Celtic dud who should be in "bottom end of League One" is on borrowed time

Therefore, the Premiership champions should focus on reviving the Belgian star’s career at Parkhead instead of splashing £6m on another underperforming young midfielder.
