'Micky Mouse trophy' – Premier League icon tears into Chelsea and claims they 'can't pretend' Todd Boehly era has been success after £2bn spend to win Conference League & Club World Cup

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher tore into Chelsea and claimed the Blues "can't pretend" that the Todd Boehly era has been a success after they spent £2bn to win only the Conference League and the Club World Cup. Since Boehly’s consortium took control at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have been trying to rebuild a squad that was once one of Europe's finest. However, after an eye-watering spend, Chelsea find themselves on the outside looking in at the Premier League’s top dogs.

  • The fall from Champions League glory

Carragher didn’t mince his words when comparing Chelsea’s current predicament to where the club stood just three years ago. When Boehly took over, the Blues had recently conquered Europe, and now, even after spending significantly, they have simply returned to Europe's top flight this season after a brief hiatus.

    Carragher dismisses Chelsea success

Speaking on Carragher said: "There's no right or wrong way going about running a football club and trying to be successful; it doesn't matter about the system. The point I'm trying to make is we can't pretend that this has been a success so far after three-and-a-half years.

"They came into a club and the manager was Thomas Tuchel, he'd won the Champions League at that club, at that stage under Thomas Tuchel, Manchester City and Liverpool were possibly the best two teams in world football, alongside Real Madrid, so it was very difficult for anybody to win the Premier League, but Chelsea were the third best team. It wasn't Manchester United, it wasn't Arsenal, it was Chelsea.

"They then change that manager, they then take a team who were very close to competing and winning trophies like they did the Champions League, and they go and spend £2 billion. They are no closer, they are further away than what that manager was doing three-and-a-half years ago in terms of competing with the top teams in the Premier League, they are further away having spent two billion pounds."

  • Micah Richards pushes back

Carragher’s comments didn’t sit well with his pundit colleague, Micah Richards, who pointed out the "progress" Chelsea have made.

"But there's been progress, hasn't there? If you finish in the league in his first season, 12th, and then you finish sixth, and then you finish fourth, and then you win the Club World Cup," he argued.

"We're talking about where they are now, yes, he has spent a lot of money, but there has been progress. They beat the best team in Europe in PSG. They did ever so well, I'm not saying Chelsea are going to win the Premier League, but you can see progress."

Carragher hit back: "Let's not forget where Chelsea have come from, Chelsea are a winning machine."

  • A trophy or a 'Micky Mouse' trophy?

Richards, though, refused to concede the point. He reminded Carragher that other clubs, like Manchester United, have spent vast sums of money but still fallen short of success.

"Man United have been a winning machine, Man United in this period of the last six or seven years have spent an awful lot of money. Man United have finished 15th, 16th, 17th last year, no where near the Champions League, so if you go back and say 12th, progress…" he said.

"You mention a way of doing it, at this moment in time Man City and Arsenal and Liverpool have got a better squad than Chelsea. You talk about doing something, you're insinuating that they're doing something wrong. I think it's very clever the way that Chelsea have done their business.

"I don't think there squad is as good I'm talking about in the Premier League, I think they could buy more quality rather than quantity. But Joao Pedro has been a good signing, Gittens did well at Dortmund. And if you're looking at what they're trying to do, they're trying to buy young players. Man City have waited too long before they can sell anyone, Chelsea are very good at selling on an asset, because they buy them young, they've still got value and look at the fees, Madueke, $66.6 million (£48.8m). I just think Chelsea are going about it in a different way, whether we agree with it or not."

As the argument intensified, the two pundits clashed over Chelsea’s triumphs. Richards defended their victories in the Club World Cup, pointing out their win against PSG, while Carragher dismissed the Club World Cup as a "Micky Mouse trophy."

Carragher asked, "Are Chelsea here to transfer players or to win trophies?"

Richards replied, "But they won two trophies last year."

Carragher snapped back, "A Micky Mouse trophy."

A stunned Richards asked, "The Club World Cup? They've just beaten PSG, European Champions."

Carragher still remained adamant and said, "You've just said they haven't got a squad better than the other teams in the Premier League. How is that possible when you've spent £2 billion on a squad?"

'It was a real shock!' – Dean Huijsen's dad reveals 'dark day' Juventus sold centre-back to Bournemouth and slams Thiago Motta for 'brutal' treatment of Real Madrid star

Dean Huijsen’s father has described his son’s Juventus exit as a “dark day” and hit out at Thiago Motta for his “brutal” treatment of the defender. The 20-year-old was sold to Bournemouth for €15 million in 2024, before Real Madrid triggered his release clause this summer leaving Juve fans furious over the loss of one of their brightest academy products.

  • Juventus shock sale still causing backlash

Huijsen’s shock departure from Juventus continues to spark controversy. The highly rated centre-back, signed from Malaga at 16 and tipped to become one of the world’s best defenders, was sold to Bournemouth for just €15m (£13m/$16m) plus bonuses. Madrid then activated his release clause, paying €60m (£50m/$66m) to bring him to Spain, where he has already broken into Xabi Alonso’s first-team plans.

Huijsen’s father slams Motta’s ‘brutal’ treatment

In an interview with , Huijsen’s father and agent, Donald, revealed the family’s disbelief at the way Juventus handled the situation, saying: "It was a real shock. We couldn't believe it, we were shocked. It was bad, too bad. A dark day. Terrible. A bolt from the blue. But why? We wondered, unable to understand, the reasons for the forced separation."

He added: "Dean was wonderful in Turin, he speaks excellent Italian, he was appreciated and well-liked by everyone. From the staff to his teammates, from the entire Juventus world to the warehouseman. Giuntoli was categorical and Motta was brutal when they told him he would no longer be part of the project and that he had to leave, that he was no longer allowed to train with the first team."

  • Juve’s loss is Madrid’s big gain

The Spaniard’s move has left Juventus fans and insiders bitter. Signed for just €470,000, he had already impressed in his Serie A debut against AC Milan under Massimiliano Allegri. But with Cristiano Giuntoli reshaping the squad under then new coach Motta, the defender was pushed out and sold cheaply to the Cherries. Los Blancos' swoop this summer has intensified criticism of Juve’s decision, especially as Huijsen has already shown flashes of quality at the Club World Cup.

It has been speculated that the sale had a role in Giuntoli's sacking at Juve, to which Huijsen said: "He and Motta aren't exactly among my best friends…"

What comes next for Huijsen at Real Madrid

After a shaky showing in Madrid’s 5-2 defeat to rivals Atletico, Huijsen will aim to bounce back when Alonso’s side face Kairat Almaty in the Champions League this week, before returning to La Liga action against Villarreal.

Isidor upgrade: Sunderland could land £23m star who's "similar to Haaland"

Sunderland supporters are now strapped in for the 38-game ride of the brand-new Premier League season.

There will be many ups and downs to come on the unforgiving top-flight rollercoaster, but nothing can take away from the fact that Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats managed to comfortably cruise to a 3-0 opening day win over a dejected West Ham United side.

Wilson Isidor will be hopeful he can write himself into Sunderland folklore, too, by being the hero who fired home the goals to keep the Black Cats afloat in such a gruelling league.

Isidor's heroics for Sunderland

He has already proven himself to be a goalscoring favourite to the die-hard Wearside masses.

Indeed, the French striker would bag a respectable 13 goals last season across 46 Championship appearances, which included Isidor firing home the opening goal in Sunderland’s first leg clash against Coventry City in the playoff semi-finals.

He popped up with another memorable effort against Graham Potter’s visitors, as well, as his late effort secured the resounding three points.

However, it will be about maintaining this clinical edge across the full season to come, with Isidor also prone to a goal-shy appearance or two.

When examining that output in the second tier in more detail, it’s clear that the former Zenit St. Petersburg man can be wasteful, as seen in him squandering 20 big chances last season, as per Sofascore.

Sunderland's Wilson Isidor

If he is displaying the same carelessness in front of goal in the top-flight down the line, Le Bris’ men could well be in danger of suffering an instant relegation.

Therefore, it’s no great shock to see that the Black Cats are going after some fresh, clinical targets up top, which includes a major Isidor upgrade potentially joining the camp.

Sunderland could land major upgrade on Isidor

Isidor will already be worrying about competing with Marc Guiu as the young, Chelsea hotshot attempts to make a name for himself on Wearside on a season-long loan deal.

He would be even more anxiety-ridden about his chances at being Sunderland’s main marksman moving forward if AS Roma ace Artem Dovbyk were to join the building.

Indeed, as per reports from Italy earlier this week, Le Bris’ men and Leeds United are now locked into a battle to win the Ukrainian’s services, who is reportedly available for a fee around the £23m mark.

This feels as if it would be a steal, therefore, for a lavish Sunderland side unafraid to splash the cash, especially when you consider Dovbyk’s recent goalscoring exploits in both Serie A and La Liga.

While the 28-year-old did come up short last season in Serie A next to Isidor’s numbers, with one less strike to his name than his French counterpart, it’s his blistering form when he was on the books of Girona that will have really caught Sunderland’s attention.

Dovbyk would close off his breakout 2023/24 campaign in Spain with a deadly 24 strikes picked up from 36 clashes, coming in at an average of a strike every 109 minutes for the Catalonia-based outfit.

Isidor, on the contrary, doesn’t have such a glittering track record in the top divisions he’s called home – away from already breaking his Premier League duck – with zero goals in the senior ranks at AS Monaco, on top of only finding the back of the net a meagre four times, lining up for Zenit.

Amazingly, the 6-foot-2 forward’s ice-cold nature in front of goal has even seen him be dubbed as “similar to [Erling] Haaland” by ex-Serie A great Mario Balotelli, alongside being hailed as “elite” by journalist Zach Lowy.

Isidor had his own moments of magic for Sunderland as the Black Cats triumphantly returned to the big time.

But Le Bris will know he can’t turn down opportunities such as these to land a major upgrade on his number 18, as Dovbyk prepares to be the spark that guides the underdogs to a comfortable Premier League finish.

Tottenham make approach for different Brazilian to Savinho amid loan chance

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has faced mounting criticism in the aftermath of their botched deal for Eberechi Eze, and talks for Man City winger Savinho haven’t exactly been plain sailing either.

Eze ultimately chose a move to boyhood club Arsenal ahead of Spurs, despite agreeing personal terms with the latter, when Mikel Arteta’s side swooped in at the last second and offered him a chance of returning to N5.

Tottenham also had a verbal agreement with Palace over the finances of a deal for Eze, but as the old saying goes – a signing is never done until all the contracts are signed.

Arsenal’s dramatic late hijack leaves Thomas Frank still without a star number 10 to replace the injured James Maddison, nor does the Dane have an heir to club legend Son Heung-min out wide.

Just under two weeks ago, Tottenham entered talks for both Eze and Savinho in separate deals, prompting huge excitement among the fanbase, but there is the possibility that Frank ends up with neither.

Eze is completely off the table, but in Savinho’s case, the north Londoners are not giving up, despite City blocking the deal as things stand.

Reports from Brazil earlier this week claimed that Tottenham are vowing to go all out for Savinho behind-the-scenes after losing out on Eze, and his agents are in London right now attempting to facilitate a deal (Globo Esporte).

Spurs could even submit a club-record £69 million bid for the Brazil international, but Pep Guardiola has previously insisted that he wants him at Eastlands for “many years” amid Levy’s interest.

Savinho is out injured right now, funnily enough, but an alternative to the 21-year-old could be Real Madrid star Rodrygo – if Spurs can’t agree a deal for the City man.

Tottenham make approach for Rodrygo amid chance of Real Madrid loan deal

Frank and Guardiola are poised to come head-to-head this weekend, and it gives club officials a chance to hold further talks over Savinho, as widely reported elsewhere.

However, City appear to be making this very difficult, and Rodrygo’s pool of suitors is running low.

The 24-year-old Brazil star, who bagged 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last season, has struggled for starts under new manager Xabi Alonso, and Defensa Central have claimed that Real could sanction a loan-to-buy deal as Tottenham take note.

Now, Mundo Deportivo, relayed by Sport Witness, have an update on the story – reporting that Tottenham are the only side to have approached Real over signing Rodrygo – and his potential exit remains a ‘live’ possibility heading into the final stretch of this summer.

Jude Bellingham called the ex-Santos star their most “underrated” and “gifted” player this year, and if a deal is there to be had, it is certainly one worth considering.

Rodrygo would be the statement signing that Tottenham are crying out for after a very testing window, and one that could seriously lift spirits around N17.

Man Utd fans come up with new chant for Senne Lammens after goalkeeper impresses on debut for Ruben Amorim's side

Manchester United fans have come up with new chant for Senne Lammens after the Belgian goalkeeper impressed on his debut for the club. After more than a month since moving to United from Royal Antwerp, Lammens was finally handed his much-awaited debut as Ruben Amorim benched Altay Bayindir, who has been the Portuguese coach's first-choice custodian since the start of the new season.

  • Lammens impresses on debut

Lammens finally got to make his long-awaited debut for the Red Devils as he was placed in the starting lineup by Amorim for their Premier League clash at Old Trafford against Sunderland on Saturday. The Belgian goalkeeper passed the test with flying colours as United kept a clean sheet while beating the Black Cats. Amorim had earlier explained that in a bid to rotate his squad, Bayindir was rested for the Premier League clash.

United fans come up with a new chant

Watching Lammens keep the club's first clean sheet of the season encouraged the Old Trafford faithful to come up with a new chant for the Belgian as the fans at the Stretford End were heard singing a rendition of "are you Schmeichel in disguise"?

While comparing a debutant to one of the greatest United goalkeepers of all time might be an exaggeration but the fans are elated that the club finally seem to have a steady custodian after some nightmare performances by Bayindir and Onana's forgettable two seasons at the club.

  • Amorim explains why he waited to give Lammens his debut

Speaking to reporters after the match, Amorim spoke about Lammens' performances, as he said: "First of all, when Senne arrived here, Altay was playing. Then you could feel it, he needed to adapt. It was a new country, new training. The pressure you guys [the media] put on the goalkeeper is massive, so it was a little preparation for him to be ready to start his first game. But it is just one game and he needs to work. He needs to be prepared [because] in our club things are really hard. He did well and was comfortable during the game. That's a really good sign."

Amorim confident of staying at Man Utd after much-needed win

United desperately needed a win to ease the pressure that was mounting on the club as well as the manager, whose position came under intense scrutiny after a poor start to the new season. However, the former Sporting CP boss is confident that his players have full faith in him, while claiming they don't want a regime change. Even attacking midfielder Mason Mount heaped praise on the United boss after scoring against Sunderland. The Red Devils are back in action after the international break against Liverpool.

Barcelona deny financial 'penalty' if they refuse to sign Marcus Rashford as sporting director Deco explains details of Man Utd loan transfer

Barcelona sporting director Deco has provided details regarding Marcus Rashford's season-long loan move from Manchester United, confirming that the reigning La Liga champions will not have to pay any penalty should they decide not to sign the Englishman permanently next summer. United have inserted a purchase option for the in-form Rashford but Barca appear set to wait until late in the season before making any decision.

  • Rashford: Barcelona's Plan C

Barcelona's fragile financial condition meant that they failed in their endeavours to sign prime left-wing targets Nico Williams and Luis Diaz, with the former staying put at Athletic Club and the latter moving to Bayern Munich. Ultimately, the reigning La Liga champions signed Rashford on a season-long loan from United, with an option to buy him for £26 million (€30m/$35m) next summer.

Rashford's great start away from United

The England international has made a terrific start in Catalunya, proving his importance to head coach Hansi Flick early on in the season. Rashford has featured in all eight games for Barca so far, which includes his rip-roaring brace against old foes Newcastle in the Champions League, as well as three assists in La Liga. The Catalans are keen on analysing Rashford's performances throughout the 2025-26 season before making a decision on his potential long-term future at the club.

  • Deco dives into financial details behind Rashford's move from Man Utd

Speaking to , Deco dispelled rumours that Barca would be required to pay a penalty should they opt not to sign Rashford permanently next summer.

"He's on a simple loan, there's no penalty, and if we want him, we have an option to buy," said Deco. "It's too early to talk about decisions for next season, but what matters is that we're happy with him. What we thought he could bring to us, he's bringing. He's a very high-level player; he exploded very early, then he had great seasons at United, then he had years of more complicated management with changes of coaches, and perhaps he struggled too because they demanded a lot of things from him there. But we're happy with him; that's the most important thing. These aren't decisions for now; now it's time to focus on the games to come. A decision will be made, but that's not being discussed right now."

He didn't provide much information regarding the details of the purchase option, though. "I don't know, [the purchase fee] is not that high but I don't have to say it either, there's a contract between the clubs but it has to be discussed," he added.

In-form Rashford in for a start against PSG?

Flick will have a huge selection headache on his head when picking his starting XI for Wednesday's blockbuster Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain. With Lamine Yamal returning from injury, it is likely that Rashford will drop to the bench. However, the Barca manager might bear Rashford's fiery form in mind and name him as a surprise inclusion in the XI.

New Chris Wood: Newcastle agree personal terms to sign big-money striker

Newcastle United’s transfer window has been dominated by one saga: Alexander Isak’s desire to leave the club.

The Swedish striker, once considered the crown jewel of Eddie Howe’s project, has grown increasingly unsettled following Liverpool’s approach earlier in the summer.

He has made his stance abundantly clear, refusing to reintegrate into the squad or even train while continuing to collect his £140,000-a-week wages.

The fallout has left Newcastle in a difficult position.

Isak’s exit hinges on the club securing a replacement first, yet the market for strikers of his calibre is slim. Several targets have already slipped away, with Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, and Benjamin Sesko all ending up elsewhere.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson remains of interest, though Aston Villa are pushing hardest for his signature.

Newcastle risk entering the campaign light in the striker position, as was evident in their opening-day draw with Aston Villa, where their attacking play lacked a focal point.

Howe has been backed with reinforcements in other areas, bringing in Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw, and Aaron Ramsdale, but the squad still looks incomplete without a forward capable of leading the line.

The need has pushed Newcastle into considering a bold move for a player reminiscent of former Toon forward Chris Wood.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Jørgen Strand Larsen

According to Liam Keen of the Express & Star, Newcastle are pushing to sign Jørgen Strand Larsen from Wolves this summer.

Intermediaries are already engaged in early conversations over a potential deal, and personal terms are said to have already been agreed with the forward.

Direct talks between the clubs have not yet taken place, but Wolves are understood to value the Norwegian at around £60m.

This figure reflects his growing importance to the Midlands club. Strand Larsen only signed permanently at Molineux on 1 July, following a loan spell from Celta Vigo.

Wolves exercised their option to buy, paying an initial £23m on top of a £2.5m loan fee, and handed the striker a contract until 2029. The Magpies’ interest is firmly rooted in necessity.

Newcastle see Larsen as a ready-made replacement, capable of replicating the contributions once made by Chris Wood at St James’ Park.

How Strand Larsen is like Chris Wood

Strand Larsen’s debut Premier League campaign was highly encouraging.

Double digits in the league and consistent hold-up play that became even more important after Matheus Cunha’s departure to Manchester United.

For Wolves, he has quickly become central to Vítor Pereira’s plans, and there is little appetite to sell.

That resistance is matched by Larsen’s growing profile. Standing at 1.93m, the 25-year-old is developing into a complete forward – able to bring teammates into play, stretch defences, and consistently test goalkeepers.

His record at international level is modest, with three goals in 21 appearances for Norway, but at club level his trajectory has been sharply upward.

With Wolves determined to hold firm, Newcastle’s pursuit looks ambitious, if not opportunistic. The comparisons between Larsen and Wood are not coincidental.

Both are tall, physical strikers who excel at occupying defenders and converting chances inside the penalty area.

Wood, now 33, was once Newcastle’s emergency signing from Burnley in 2022, brought in mid-season to provide immediate cover during a relegation battle.

He delivered steady returns before moving on to Nottingham Forest, where he enjoyed a remarkable renaissance – scoring 20 goals and registering three assists last season, helping Forest secure European football for the first time since 1996.

Wood’s reputation was built at Burnley, where in 165 appearances, he scored 53 goals, per Transfermarkt.

He was the model of consistency under Sean Dyche, regularly hitting double figures and providing the kind of reliability that kept Burnley competitive in the top flight.

His 2017/18 campaign was especially memorable, as his goals contributed heavily to a seventh-place finish, securing European qualification for Turf Moor. That period established him as one of the league’s most dependable strikers.

It is within this context that Larsen’s potential becomes clearer. In statistical terms, the Norwegian’s 18 goal involvements last season sit close to Wood’s 23.

According to FBref, Larsen’s efficiency stands out: his 61.1% shot-on-target rate eclipses Wood’s 49.2%, and he averaged more shots on target per 90 minutes (1.15 compared to 0.97).

For a team like Newcastle, who crafted several quality chances against Aston Villa but struggled to convert without a natural No. 9, that level of accuracy is significant.

Wood offers a different dimension with the ball at his feet. His 1.28 progressive passes per 90 and an average passing distance of 30.9 metres are in excess of Larsen’s 1.01 and 24.3 respectively, underlining his ability to bring runners into play from deep.

Larsen instead leans into a more modern style. He averages more carries per game (12.0 to 11.4) and more progressive carries (0.59 to 0.43), suggesting he is likelier to drive at defenders with the ball rather than distribute it early.

Defensively, Larsen also looks the more active option, averaging nearly double Wood’s output in both tackles and blocks per 90 minutes. In Howe’s high-intensity pressing system, that kind of front-line industry could prove invaluable.

What Newcastle would be buying in Larsen is essentially a younger, sharper version of Wood – retaining the aerial dominance and penalty-box instinct, while adding greater mobility, pressing energy, and efficiency in front of goal.

He mirrors Wood’s strengths but aligns more closely with the demands of the modern game.

The sticking point, of course, is the price. At £60m, Larsen would represent one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings, second only to Isak.

Better than Wissa & Strand Larsen: Newcastle "really like" £60m striker

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing a star who could be even better than Wissa and Strand Larsen.

By
Will Miller

Whether his profile justifies that outlay is a question for the club’s hierarchy, but the urgency of the Isak situation may force their hand. Wolves know they hold the leverage, and their determination to keep Larsen will not make negotiations easy.

Vincent Kompany ‘annoyed’ Bayern Munich youngster in ‘truly crazy’ start at Bundesliga side as ‘rare’ Belgian coach brings control and fun to the team

Bayern Munich's young midfielder Tom Bischof admitted his first few weeks under manager Vincent Kompany were 'truly crazy.' The 20-year-old German, who joined the club in the summer, said he was 'annoyed' by how demanding his new coach was at first, but now sees that constant push as one of the main reasons behind his quick growth.

  • Bischof's breakthrough under Kompany

The 20-year-old joined Bayern on a free transfer from Hoffenheim this summer. After missing the start of the season due to appendicitis, Bischof made his first Bundesliga start on September 26, registering an assist for Konrad Laimer’s late goal in Bayern’s 4-0 win over Werder Bremen. Since then, he has made seven appearances for the club and is steadily earning Kompany’s trust.

Bischof hails Kompany as rare coach who combines control and fun

In an interview with , the German midfielder, who signed a four-year deal with the Bundesliga giants in January, heaped high praise on Kompany and his unique coaching style, describing him as a rare manager who blends strict control with an enjoyable atmosphere.

"I've rarely seen a coach who has the team so under control and, at the same time, brings so much fun to training sessions and the team as he does. The first three weeks were truly crazy," he said. "He told me something about practically every move. I almost thought: 'Please, that's enough.' I was annoyed, but I have to say that, looking back, it's helped me tremendously. I constantly think of his words in my actions. Run after them, always keep up! He drilled that into my head. And it's stuck there forever."

  • German youngster says Bayern’s winning mentality was key factor behind move

Bischof said his move to Munich was a deliberate decision despite knowing the level of competition that awaited him. "I'm a guy who likes challenges. And I've often said that the identity of Bayern Munich suits me. I'm a winner. When you go to the training ground, you just notice that the lads want to win; they fight for every ball. All of that suits me, and I'm keen to assert myself."

He also credited several senior teammates for helping him settle in.

"Of course, I also learn from Jo [Kimmich], because he's one of the best in his position. But I could name so many. Jonathan Tah, Leon Goretzka, Aleks Pavlovic, Serge Gnabry, Harry Kane, Michael Olise – they all keep an eye on me, take me by the hand, and give me tips. That gives me a lot of confidence on the pitch."

What's next for Bayern and Bischof?

Bayern have been in unstoppable form under Kompany, winning all 10 of their matches this season. Meanwhile, Bischof, who also featured for Germany’s senior national team in the Nations League this year, will be seen in action for the Under-21 side against Greece in Friday’s European Championship qualifier.

Man Utd run rule over"incredible" £70m ace ahead of potential January deal

Manchester United are preparing to send scouts to watch an “incredible” player ahead of a potential move for him in the January transfer window.

Man Utd eyeing January signings

The Red Devils had a productive summer overall, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko all big-money signings who should add a huge amount of quality to the attack.

That said, United’s squad is still far from perfect, following a hit-and-miss start to the new Premier League season, they also exited the EFL Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town, so further new faces could be looked at when January arrives.

Sevilla's Juanlu Sanchez in action against Atletico Madrid's Conor Gallagher.

Atlético Madrid and England midfielder Conor Gallagher was linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer window, and he is still reportedly a target for the Red Devils midway through the season, with a loan-to-buy option mooted.

Meanwhile, highly-rated young Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has also been mentioned as a transfer option for United in the coming months, with added quality and depth badly needed in the middle of the park.

Man Utd sending scouts to watch "incredible" ace

Now, according to Give Me Sport, Manchester United are eyeing a move for Sporting CP centre-back Zeno Debast in January, with Ruben Amorim knowing him well from their time together.

In fact, the Red Devils are even preparing to send scouts to watch him in action, as they look to bring in the 21-year-old as an important long-term member of their defence.

Debast is a player with so much potential, and with United not wholly convincing at the back, he could provide great competition for places.

The 21-cap Belgium international is already a key man for club and country, despite his tender years, and scout Jacek Kulig has hailed him as “incredible” in the past.

The fact that Amorim knows the £70m-rated Debast so well as a player can only be a good thing, and he could be viewed as the defensive partner for the likes of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

Pumas' Keylor Navas reveals the position he dreamed of playing before becoming a legendary goalkeeper

After joining Pumas UNAM to be closer to his family and move on from a tough stint in Argentina, Keylor Navas opened up about his early football dreams – revealing he once wanted to lead the attack instead of guard the net. The 38-year-old Costa Rican legend, who starred for Real Madrid and PSG, has quickly become one of Pumas’ key figures in Liga MX.

"Throughout the entire week I was a striker"

During a recent appearance on the YouTube channel hosted by fellow Costa Rican and football icon Hugo Sánchez, Navas surprised fans by revealing a lesser-known story from his early years in the sport.

The conversation took a humorous turn when Sánchez asked him what his career might have looked like had he played in a different position-specifically as an attacker. That’s when Navas admitted that scoring goals once felt just as natural as stopping them.

“When I was a kid, I always played as a goalkeeper," Navas said. "We played the match on Saturdays at the football school, but throughout the entire week I was a striker."

He explained that between the ages of eight and 14, he would split matches between goal and attack.

“And when I played as a striker, I took advantage of certain situations. I always thought, ‘When you're standing there and the forward is so close, if he doesn’t shoot, that’s a great chance, because if he does shoot, it would be very hard to stop it.’”

Destiny led him down a different path

That striker’s mindset stayed with him even as he evolved into one of the world’s top goalkeepers.

“That was my mentality as a forward – a killer,” he said. But in the end, a bit of divine guidance-led him as he leaned on his faith to go in a different path.

“I would never have had the kind of career you had,” Navas said to Sanchez.

Immediate impact since arriving in Mexico

Now under the guidance of Efraín Juárez, Navas has taken on a leadership role as Pumas chase a Play-In spot. The team sits 10th in Liga MX with four matchdays remaining.
