Huge blow for O’Neil as Wolves star Yerson Mosquera ruled out for months

Wolverhampton Wanderers and manager Gary O’Neil have been handed a huge injury blow to a “superb” player, the BBC reports.

Wolves still awaiting first Premier League win

The Old Gold haven’t had the best of starts to the new campaign, picking up just one Premier League point in their first five games. O’Neil’s side suffered defeats to Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle while picking up their only point at Nottingham Forest prior to Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa.

It looked as if Wolves would come away with more points to add to their tally after Matheus Cunha put the visitors in front during the first half. However, goals from Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Jhon Duran ensured Wolves’ poor start to the season would continue.

As can be seen, Wolves made the trip to Villa Park without a number of players due to injury, and unfortunately, that list has now grown.

Wolves injury update on Yerson Mosquera

Another who joined the treatment table on the weekend was defender Yerson Mosquera. The Colombian had played every minute of league action before having to go off injured in the closing stages of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat with a knee issue.

Now, an update has emerged from Molineux. Relayed by the BBC, Wolves’ head of high performance Phil Hayward said that is it unlikely Mosquera will play again this season and requires surgery.

“Yerson has now had all of the various assessments and scans which unfortunately confirm injuries to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). We will be visiting specialists in the coming days to finalise the plan for surgery; this will take place in the next two weeks. Timescales are difficult to state prior to surgery but it is highly unlikely he will feature again this season.”

It seemed as if this season would be a breakthrough campaign in England for Mosquera, who only made one appearance for the club prior to the beginning of the campaign, despite joining in 2021. In recent years, the defender has been out on loan to Cincinnati and Villarreal, with Wolves’ pathway manager Steve Davis hailing Mosquera during his time in the USA last year.

“He’s done really well. He’s playing every week, scored a couple of goals, got a couple of assists, and he has been one of the outstanding defenders in the MLS, so it’s been a brilliant loan for him.

“Even from the 45-minute conversation I had with him you could see how happy he was being out there. I know they’ve got six or seven Spanish speaking boys in the squad, so that ability to be able to communicate and tell people how you are and how you feel is important.

“But then he’s got American coaches, staff and players, so he’s also been able to improve his English, and I was actually able to have a conversation with him and understand him! He’s always smiling and he’s a superb character. He’s only 22, so he’s still a young boy, but you can see that he’s grown and he’s growing up being out there and making new friends has given him that opportunity to really establish himself.”

Dembele’s remarkable goal-scoring week began with a stunning hat-trick against Stuttgart in the Champions League on Wednesday. He followed that up with another three-goal performance in Ligue 1, marking a personal milestone in what has been the most prolific season of his career. Despite the club boasting legendary strikers such as Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, none had previously managed back-to-back hat-tricks in PSG colours.

    WHAT DEMBELE SAID

After the match, Dembele credited his recent success to his positioning and role in the squad.

"I'm well placed, I'm in the role of number nine and I have to score goals. It was a game where I played a bit of a carrot behind the defence," Dembele said.

While celebrating his individual accomplishment, the French winger was quick to emphasize the importance of his teammates’ contributions. He specifically highlighted the quality of service he received, particularly from Kang-In Lee, who provided an assist for one of his goals.

"I think you have to congratulate the team and especially the passers. Because on the first goal, all I had to do was push it home. And on the third, Kang-In's pass was exceptional," Dembele said.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dembele’s heroics helped PSG secure their 15th league victory of the season, bringing them to 50 points from 20 matches. Their commanding lead at the top of the table now stands at 13 points over second-placed Marseille, though their rivals have a game in hand. With the Ligue 1 title race seemingly in their control, PSG is well on track to clinch their fourth consecutive domestic championship.

Chelsea star is now more vital than Palmer after being grilled by Carragher

Sometimes, in the world of football, players that make big money moves are judged through an unfair lense, purely because of their transfer fee. Chelsea know that all too well.

This can often come back to bite many pundits, as they make bold shouts about players being a “flop” too early, only for them to prove people wrong, find their feet and excel.

Teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and even Arsenal have been known to spend big fees on players, meaning we have seen this a fair amount in recent years.

Some big examples of this in the past few years are Jack Grealish, David Raya, and Marc Cucurella. But Jamie Carragher is the latest pundit to be subject to this, after a comment he made in August 2023.

What Carragher said about Caicedo

Moises Caicedo joined Chelsea from Brighton for a British record transfer fee of around £115m, signing an eight-year deal for the Blues.

Carragher, whilst covering the Chelsea vs West Ham game on Sky Sports, labelled Caicedo’s debut a “nightmare”, as he came from the bench, giving away a penalty late in the game.

Many fans took to social media after this, brandishing the mega-money man as a “flop” already, but the 22-year-old midfielder bounced back, having a brilliant second half of the season, and becoming one of Chelsea’s most important players under Mauricio Pochettino.

Caicedo made 48 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions last season, scoring once, providing four assists, and contributing to 11 clean sheets in his 3,899 minutes played. Perhaps his highlight of the season came with his halfway-line finish against Bournemouth on the last day, as Chelsea won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Caicedo 2024/25 impact so far

Under new manager Enzo Maresca, Caicedo is already showing how important he is, playing as a holding midfielder, but having a number of different responsibilities during a game. Maresca will often invert one of his fullbacks alongside the Ecuadorian, giving the pair a lot of the build-up responsibilities.

Perhaps his biggest responsibility is to protect Chelsea in transition, mopping up danger between the lines. The 22-year-old is averaging 2.76 tackles per 90 this season, compared to just 1.13 last campaign, showing his importance in this aspect of the game.

With the consistent injury issues of Roméo Lavia, who also signed in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £58m, Caicedo’s importance has only been amplified this season, especially seen in his performance against West Ham, where he won ten of his 12 ground duels, and made a whopping eight tackles in the game.

Maresca clearly sees Caicedo as one of his key players, having already started seven of Chelsea’s nine games in all competitions, totalling 637 minutes this season. This is more than the 555 minutes of Cole Palmer, which begs the question, who is more important for the Blues?

Caicedo vs Palmer

Palmer has already scored six and provided four assists in his eight appearances, coming off the back of his stellar 2023/24 campaign, where the 22-year-old scored 27 goals and provided 15 assists in 48 games across all competition.

The English midfielder/attacker is coming off the back of a Premier League record-breaking game, where he scored four goals in the first half, the first time this has ever been done in Premier League history.

Stats taken from FBref

The problem when comparing these two players is that their stats reflect their role in the team, making it hard to draw comparisons as to which is contributing most in their role. Caicedo winning 4.14 tackles per 90, and making 1.72 interceptions, is allowing Chelsea to regain possession, kick-start attacks, and protect their own goal, allowing them to concede fewer.

Palmer, on the other hand, is the main source of creation for Maresca’s side, making 3.04 key passes per 90, taking 3.04 shots per 90, and, of course, contributing with goals and assists, scoring 1.07 per 90, and assisting 0.71 per 90.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

The argument to be made for Caicedo being more important to the team is the fact he has more touches on the ball (66.7 touches per 90, compared to Palmer’s 48.4), and has the responsibility of progressing play into those attack-minded players, who can then work their magic.

If the former Brighton man wasn’t winning the ball back as often as he is, playing forwards, and allowing stars like Palmer to shine, everything would fall flat, and Chelsea would struggle to control games, or even generate attacks.

This isn’t to say other Chelsea players haven’t had brilliant starts to the season, as Levi Colwill is another that has really impressed for Maresca at the start of this new season, being given more on-ball responsibilities, allowing him to play progressive passes through the lines, and showcase his passing ability.

Since the arrival of Maresca, Colwill is averaging ten more passes attempted per 90, 3.67 progressive passes per 90, and more long balls per 90, showing the license he now has to fully utilise his passing range to benefit the side.

Whilst the argument for who is Chelsea’s most important player could be made for both Colwill and, of course, Palmer, especially after scoring four goals on the weekend, Caicedo is currently the Blues’ most important player, as without him, Maresca’s side would struggle in all phases of the game, which is telling of the impact the Ecuadorian has on the team, week in, week out.

Al-Nassr made a statement winter signing as the Saudi Pro League side signed striker Jhon Duran from Aston Villa for a reported fee of €77 million (£64m/$79m). The Colombian striker made his debut against relegation battlers Al-Feiha at Al-Awwal Park and showed exactly why he has been signed.

Duran started in a two-striker partnership alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, who celebrated his 40th birthday on the eve of the clash. After a strong start from the hosts, Al-Feiha looked to gain some momentum before Sadio Mane wrestled the ball away from a midfielder and found Duran in a crowded space. However, the Colombian's quick feet managed to open up some space in front of him before he lashed a shot past Orlando Mosquera to open his account for the nine-time Saudi Pro League champions. Stefano Pioli's men took a 1-0 lead in at half-time as they looked to pass Al-Qadsiah in the standings.

The host seemed to not be on their best show as Al-Feiha threatened to equalise multiple times, however, Mane found Duran yet again in the 72nd minute as Al-Nassr found space on the counter before the Colombian bobbled the ball past Mosquera and into the back of the net to double the hosts lead. Ronaldo then managed to grab his 16th league goal of the season after right-back Nawaf Boushal found the captain with a cutback in open space in the box.

Al-Nassr secured their three points and leapt over Al-Qadsiah into third place in the Saudi Pro League standings, eight points behind leaders Al-Ittihad.

    THE MVP

Duran's move to Al-Nassr had raised a lot of questions from fans in England over the Colombian's commitment as the 21-year-old may be set to spend the early peak of his career outside of Europe. However, the striker has not let the doubt weigh over his mind and has shown his absolute quality with a brace on his debut with his new side.

    THE BIG LOSER

Angelo has been one of the key performers for Pioli this season as the Brazilian operated in an advanced attacking midfielder role before today. However, with the Italian shifting to a 4-4-2 system to incorporate both Ronaldo and Duran together, Angelo was shifted to a right-wing role and failed to show his usual class on the field, which could hint at his struggles in Pioli's new system.

Liverpool now battling Atletico Madrid to sign £25m Olympic gold medalist

Looking ahead to the future and perhaps replacing Virgil van Dijk in the long-term, Liverpool are reportedly battling Atletico Madrid to sign a La Liga defender who won Olympic gold in the summer.

Liverpool transfer news

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool’s focus has been on renewing certain contracts in recent weeks, with fresh terms agreed with Jarell Quansah and a new contract for Ibrahima Konate also reportedly on the cards. The same can’t be said for the three big names, however. Those, of course, being Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who could deal the Reds a major blow by departing as free agents next summer.

After putting pen to paper on a new deal, Quansah told Liverpool’s official website: “I couldn’t be happier at this minute. I think the way the new manager has come in, his coaching style has definitely been a massive part of that and I think it is the best club in the world for me to develop at and become a better player.

“I think the players around me, who I’m looking to work hard off and listen to, I think they’re the best in the position at the minute. So, like I said, there is probably no better place I could be.”

With the defender’s long-term future sealed, the Reds have now seemingly turned their attention towards handing him a centre-back partner in the years to come. According to reports in Spain, Michael Edwards is now battling Atletico Madrid to sign Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia in 2025, with the Spanish club reportedly valuing their 20-year-old at just €30m (£25m) amid financial concerns.

Mosquera, now an Olympic gold medalist after winning with Spain in Paris 2024, has played every minute for Valencia so far this season and the only way seems up from here.

Mosquera could become Van Dijk heir

Whilst he doesn’t have the experience to step straight into Van Dijk’s role, especially if it is to be as early as next summer, Mosquera may well be the heir to the Dutchman’s throne that the Reds so desperately need for years to come. Standing out in an otherwise poor Valencia side sitting inside La Liga’s relegation zone, Mosquera would be easing his side’s financial woes whilst making his biggest move yet if he swapped Spain for Liverpool.

The numbers show that Mosquera still has a long way to go if he wants to match Van Dijk’s outrageous passing range, but they also highlight just how talented the young defender already is off the ball. Almost matching Van Dijk for ball recoveries, if Mosquera can now step into a side that play on the front foot, then that passing ability should come over time to create a complete player.

When 2025 arrives, Liverpool would certainly be wise to make their move for the Valencia star.

Man Utd now expected to make first move to sign £25m star to partner Ugarte

Still unsatisfied with the current squad, INEOS have reportedly turned their attention back towards the transfer market and are expected to make their first move to sign one particular Manchester United target.

Man Utd transfer news

On paper, Manchester United enjoyed an incredibly successful summer transfer window. They beat Real Madrid to Leny Yoro, boosted their frontline with Joshua Zirkzee, added their back line with the arrivals of Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt and then rounded things off with Manuel Ugarte to end Casemiro’s run in the side. All that was left for Erik ten Hag to do was form a side capable of returning to the Premier League’s top four.

Goldbridge called the deal crazy: Man Utd star is now their "best signing"

Oct 10, 2024

So far, however, what looked good on paper has proved to be anything but on the pitch to culminate in Manchester United’s worst start to a season in Premier League history, somehow eclipsing last season’s dire opening.

The pressure, as a result, is mounting on Ten Hag, but INEOS look set to give the Dutchman more time before then turning their attention back towards the transfer window for further reinforcements.

According to reports in Spain, INEOS and Man Utd are expected to make their first move to sign Rodrigo de Paul from Atletico Madrid, who could part ways with their Argentine midfielder to hand Manchester United an ideal partner for Ugarte in 2025.

The 30-year-old would go against the Red Devils’ new transfer policy which aims to avoid players who are at the back end of their peaks, but the experience of a World Cup winner could see those at Old Trafford make an exception to the rule.

"Superb" De Paul can solve Man Utd problem

Whilst there was some belief that the introduction of Ugarte may solve Manchester United’s midfield problem once and for all, the former Paris Saint-Germain star was always unlikely to complete that task on his own. Instead, it’s the addition of De Paul alongside the Uruguay international that could form the midfield that Ten Hag so desperately needs at his disposal.

The numbers indicate that Ugarte and De Paul would provide quite the balance at the heart of United’s midfield, with both players counteracting their weaknesses on and off the ball in ideal fashion. Where Ugarte struggles to progress play, De Paul thrives. Meanwhile, where the Argentine is weaker defensively, the Manchester United man is a statistically excellent ball-winner.

Dubbed “superb” by journalist Zach Lowy, those at Old Trafford would be wise to make their move for the De Paul, valued at £25m by Transfermarkt, should the opportunity arise. Whether or not Ten Hag is still the man in charge to potentially welcome De Paul and other fresh faces remains to be seen, however.

As bad as Trossard: Arteta must now drop 5/10 Arsenal dud after Shakhtar

Arsenal made it two wins from three in the Champions League this season, securing a 1-0 win over Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates last night.

Mikel Arteta’s side never really looked as though they got themselves out of second gear, and struggled to really secure the victory in a convincing manner.

The only goal came after Gabriel Martinelli’s superb effort cannoned off the base of the post onto the back of the helpless Dmytro Riznyk and into the back of the net.

The Gunners registered a total of 13 shots in North London, but were unable to add to their tally, having to settle for a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

As a result, Arteta’s side remain unbeaten in Europe so far this season, still yet to concede a goal after their first three outings, looking in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages.

However, the result could’ve been more convincing had numerous players taken the chances they had been presented with during the meeting.

Leandro Trossard’s stats against Shakhtar

After failing to make a huge impact in the weekend’s defeat to Bournemouth – notably giving the ball away for William Saliba’s sending off – forward Leandro Trossard was handed an opportunity last night to impress from the off.

However, the Belgian endured a night to forget, producing some poor figures during the defeat and looking a shadow of his former self – which saw him bag 17 goals in all competitions last campaign.

The 29-year-old featured for a total of 87 minutes last night, managing just 38 touches in the process, completing only 21 passes and losing possession seven times in an all-round wasteful display.

Despite his lack of impact throughout the encounter, he was handed a chance to get himself on the scoresheet, stepping up to take the penalty during the closing stages.

However, Trossard had his tame effort saved by Riznyk, looking caught in two minds whether to go down the middle or place the ball to the goalkeeper’s left.

It was an all-around disappointing night for the Gunners’ number 19, but he wasn’t alone in producing a below-par performance for Arteta’s side.

The man who was just as poor as Trossard

Despite being named as a substitute at the weekend, striker Gabriel Jesus was recalled to the starting lineup, and was even named as Arteta’s captain for the Champions League clash at the Emirates.

However, the Brazilian wouldn’t feature in his natural centre-forward role, but instead on the right-hand side of Arsenal’s attack, covering for the injured Bukayo Saka.

Whilst the recall could’ve handed Jesus that confidence boost he so desperately needed, he was unable to change his fortunes of late, once again failing to impress.

During his 68-minute display, the 27-year-old only completed one of his attempted crosses and lost possession 12 times as he often looked wasteful when in possession.

Jesus’ wastefulness translated into his chances in front of goal, missing one big chance after firing his one-on-one opportunity straight at the legs of the opposition ‘keeper.

As a result, Football London’s Kaya Kaynak handed the Brazilian a 5/10 match rating, an indication of how poor he was during the European victory.

This Sunday, Arsenal host the in-form Liverpool at the Emirates, desperate to continue their winning record and give them the best chance of competing for the Premier League title this season.

However, Jesus must be nowhere near the starting lineup, with every Gunner praying that Saka will be fit enough to return for the huge clash.
