Nunez starts in predicted Liverpool lineup for Klopp’s final game

Jurgen Klopp will walk out on Sunday afternoon to listen to Anfield's song from the dugout one last time, with Liverpool hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the Premier League season.

This day has been signposted right from the German's shock news back in January that he would be stepping down after taking the reins in 2015 and leading Liverpool to glory across all the different fronts. But it hurts all the same. Such things invariably do.

Klopp will take great solace and pride in his ability to recraft his team after slumping into the Europa League, banishing the sapped and past-its-sell-by midfield and replacing it with some terrific, younger, more inspiring talent.

The Reds won the Carabao Cup in February, belying a staggering injury list, but proved to be a day late and a dollar short in the other three prizes, suffering from a nosedive in form and performance to crash out of the FA Cup and Europa League and slew off-course in the Premier League late on.

Wolves will certainly not roll over to hand Klopp the fairytale final day that Anfield will pray for, though Liverpool's firepower should be enough to secure three points and finish an impressive campaign with 82 points.

After collapsing to draw 3-3 at Aston Villa last time, leggy Liverpool might find four tweaks made to the starting line-up as Klopp bows out.

1

GK – Alisson

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Alisson has undoubtedly been one of the major pillars throughout Klopp's reign, signing from Roma for a record £67m fee back in 2018 and going on to win the Champions League and Premier League across his first two seasons as a Red.

He's suffered with injuries this season but the Brazilian is, as Klopp puts it, "the best goalkeeper in the world" and will, of course, be vital against the Old Gold.

2

RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold has also struggled for match fitness for portions of the season but Liverpool's vice-captain is one of the game's celestial creative players.

The right-back will be expected to play a big part in the years to come under incoming boss Arne Slot but he's out of contract at the end of next season and, with Real Madrid sniffing around, there is heightened concern that tomorrow might be his final appearance for his boyhood club.

3

CB – Jarell Quansah

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

The rise of Jarell Quansah has been one of the biggest success stories this season, especially considering that the imminently departing Joel Matip suffered an ACL injury against Fulham in December.

Listed as a similar player to Ibrahima Konate and Micky van de Ven by FBref's player comparison model, the new kid on the block has been immense throughout his breakthrough season, scoring his first Premier League goal last time out at Villa Park.

He earned his first Premier League start at Molineux in the reverse fixture and earned an 8/10 match rating from reporter Ian Doyle for his front-footed, commanding display.

4

CB – Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool

In his first campaign as Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk has been a rock-solid presence in the rearguard, dealing with piling injury problems inflicted upon his peers to reaffirm his position as one of the game's finest-ever centre-backs.

Wolves will have a tough task against the steely Dutchman.

5

LB – Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson in action for Liverpool.

Andy Robertson has struggled with injuries this season – there's a trend here – but the 30-year-old is still one of the best in the business and has been vital in recent weeks, scoring in his last two games in the Premier League, against West Ham United and Spurs.

The Scotland captain also bagged against Wolves earlier in the campaign and his newfound Midas touch is another thing that the visitors will have to worry about tomorrow.

6

DM – Wataru Endo

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo

Liverpool's decision to sign Wataru Endo last summer has proved to be an astute piece of business, succeeding Fabinho after the Brazilian stalwart fell by the wayside last year.

All things considered, Liverpool's surprise £16m signing has been an upgrade on last season's version of Fabinho. But the 31-year-old is not the long-term solution and Liverpool's new structure must make the pursuit of a high-level No. 6 one of the first ports of call this summer.

7

CM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai scores for Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai has lost his way after a resounding start to life on Merseyside, signing from RB Leipzig for £60m last summer, but he deserves to start against Wolves.

Liverpool are, frankly, a team in need of a rest and Klopp must bench the impressive Harvey Elliott to freshen things up and give his high-profile Hungarian signing one last chance to make an impression in 2023/24.

8

CM – Curtis Jones

Liverpool player Curtis Jones.

Curtis Jones suffered an ankle injury against Brentford in February that has disrupted his flow quite considerably over the past few months, starting just two of his team's eight league games since returning to fitness.

But Alexis Mac Allister was noticeably leggy against Villa, and, with third place secured, Klopp should give the Scouse-born talent a final starting berth on Sunday.

Mac Allister was hailed as a "superstar" by Joe Cole earlier in the campaign and he has been one of Liverpool's major focal points, but his 5/10 match rating at Villa Park suggests that perhaps he has run out of gas.

9

RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

Mohamed Salah is the forward of Klopp's reign, scoring 211 goals and adding 89 assists across 348 outings for Liverpool. There's room for one more on this final, fated day – surely?

10

LW – Luis Diaz

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.

Liverpool's indefatigable left winger has been in the news recently as speculation mounts over his future at Anfield but he's sure to start once again against Gary O'Neil's side, having featured from the outset in every Premier League fixture since January.

Lucas Paqueta's family caught in FA investigation into alleged spot-fixing after West Ham star's relatives admit to paying ex-Betis star Luiz Henrique

Lucas Paqueta's family have been brought under investigation by the Football Association after their alleged involvement in a spot-fixing scandal.

Paqueta’s uncle and cousin, Bruno and Yan Tolentino, allegedly paid former Real Betis striker Luiz Henrique over £5,000 shortly after Henrique received two controversial yellow cards – which led La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to open an investigation. The betting irregularities surrounding Henrique’s yellow cards have been closely tied to the FA's investigation into Paqueta's involvement in similar spot-fixing activities. The charges against Paqueta reportedly include four counts of spot-fixing, a serious offence that could result in severe consequences for the Brazilian midfielder.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The integrity alerts that flagged the suspicious betting patterns involving both Paqueta and Henrique were reportedly raised by Betway, the online gambling company that sponsors West Ham. It is believed that many of the questionable bets involving Paqueta were placed by members of his own family, further complicating the investigation.

  • WHAT BRUNO TOLENTINO SAID

In an interview with Brazilian media outlet , Paqueta’s uncle Bruno Tolentino admitted to making two bank transfers totalling £5,500 to Henrique. However, Tolentino insisted that the payments were related to a personal loan rather than any illicit activity.

He explained: "It was money that I owed him and I paid it. It was an agreement between us. It was money that I owed him and he had lent it to me. We agreed to pay it back and we did. When I had the money to pay it back, I paid it. I can play, I'm not prohibited. I just can't have privileged information. From Luiz Henrique, it was pure luck, man. It's one in a million."

    WHAT NEXT?

The FA was reportedly unaware of Tolentino’s involvement in the case until these recent revelations, but they are now expanding their investigation, reports. Paqueta is yet to face a formal disciplinary hearing, but it is expected that a three-person independent commission will handle the case once the FA ties up its arguments. If found guilty, Paqueta could face a lifelong ban from professional football.

Tottenham join Crystal Palace in race for Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham

Tottenham chiefs are believed to be considering a summer move for an "incredible" British youngster with a big future in the game, according to reliable journalist Ed Aarons.

Tottenham transfer news

The upcoming summer transfer window is a crucial one in north London, as Ange Postecoglou looks to take his team up a gear and make them a Premier League top four outfit. That won't be easy, considering the level of competition at the top of the table, but new faces will certainly help.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez has emerged as a great option to come in and finally fill the void left by Harry Kane, following a season that saw him score 23 goals for the Dutch giants in the Eredivisie. There is the threat that new Liverpool manager Arne Slot could look to take the Mexican to Anfield, although that remains to be seen, and Spurs are seen as the current favourites to snap him up.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez

Another exciting signing for Postecoglou is reportedly Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who could feel that this summer is the ideal time to move on and enjoy a new challenge at a bigger club. He could feature prominently at Euro 2024, should he make England's final squad, giving Spurs fans a good chance to see him more regularly but also perhaps raising his price tag.

It looks as though the north Londoners are looking to add firepower in attacking areas this summer, with Serhou Guirassy also linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Incredibly, the Guinean scored 28 goals in just 25 Bundesliga starts for VfB Stuttgart in 2023/24, highlighting what a ruthless addition he could be.

Tottenham want "incredible" British teenager

According to Aarons on X, Tottenham are "interested" in signing Sunderland ace Jobe Bellingham for at least £20m this summer, among other Premier League clubs, but the Black Cats are holding firm.

"Understand that Sunderland are determined to try and keep Jobe Bellingham this summer. Tottenham, Brentford, Crystal Palace and several clubs in Europe are interested in the 18-year-old, with Sunderland believed to want a fee in excess of £20m if they are to sell."

The Bellingham name has become world-renowned because of the incredible rise of Jude Bellingham, but his younger brother is an outstanding prospect in his own right, already impressing so much for Sunderland at just 18 years of age.

Last season, he started 43 of the Black Cats' 46 Championship matches, scoring seven goals from midfield in that time, while former Sunderland Republic of Ireland striker Niall Quinn has hailed him as "incredible".

While Bellingham's current club will do all they can to keep hold of such a prized asset, the lure of moving to Spurs could be great for him, feeling that he has already outgrown Sunderland and is now ready to chance his arm at a Premier League side.

Planning for the long-term is vital for Postecoglou, and if he could sign Bellingham, Tottenham could have a key midfielder sorted for the next decade or so, at least.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

The Manchester club will aim to get back to winning ways in their upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford at Old Trafford on October 19.

Arsenal women's player ratings vs West Ham: Stina Blackstenius stars after replacing anonymous Alessia Russo as Mariona Caldentey and Rosa Kafaji fire manager-less Gunners to much-needed WSL win

In their first league game since Jonas Eidevall's resignation, the Gunners had to battle hard to secure all three points in east London

Renee Sleger’s first Women's Super League game as interim Arsenal head coach ended with the Gunners claiming a hard-fought 2-0 win away at West Ham.

Inclement conditions at kick-off did neither side any favours, with torrential rain in east London making life difficult for those on the field and in the stands. The hosts started brightly enough, though, and could have made more of early set-piece situations.

Arsenal took control of ball possession from there, but were unable to do much with it. England striker Alessia Russo did get the odd sight of goal, but Hammers goalkeeper Kinga Szemik was only forced into a couple of comfortable first-half saves.

Beth Mead was introduced off the bench as the hour-mark approached, but fellow Lionesses star Leah Williamson remained stuck among the substitutes after dropping out of the starting XI.

Stina Blackstenius, meanwhile, looked lively after replacing Russo and won a penalty in the 70th minute following a clumsy challenge from Amber Tysiak – with Mariona Caldentey registering her first WSL goal from the spot as she sent Szemik the wrong way.

Blackstenius was then involved in Arsenal’s second, as they wrapped up the points late on, with the Swede teeing up international team-mate Rosa Kafaji for her first Gunners goal – with a smart first-time finish fired into the top corner.

Man Utd hold talks to sign prolific new teenage forward who Rangnick rates

Manchester United have expressed interest in signing a teenage sensation whom former manager Ralf Rangnick rates.

Man Utd transfer speculation

After an 8th-place finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup triumph last month, Manchester United have opted to keep Erik ten Hag on as their manager heading into the 2024/25 season. The Red Devils must now begin their on-field rebuild as new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe aims to return the Red Devils to the glory years of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

However, there looks set to be a shift in transfer policy under the new ownership, with United expected to target younger players and turn them into top stars, rather than spending big money on established names like they have done in the past with signings such as Raphael Varane, Casemiro and Angel Di Maria. Earlier this year, Ratcliffe was quizzed on whether he would rather United bring Mbappe to Old Trafford or INEOS sign two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar, with the life-long United fan going on to emphasise the need to avoid huge transfer fees on established stars.

“I’d rather find the next Mbappe, rather than spend a fortune to buy success,” Ratcliffe said. “It’s not that clever, is it, buying Mbappe? In a way, anyone could figure that one out. But what’s much more challenging is to find the next Mbappe, or next Bellingham, or the next Roy Keane.”

Man Utd have recently been credited with an interest in signing forward Maximilian Beier, while they are also

keen on signing talented youngster Desire Doue. Both players fit the profile of the type of signing Ratcliffe is looking to make now he is heading up United's recruitment strategy.

Now, another rising star has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. The player in question is RB Salzburg teenager, Oghenetejiri Adejenughure. The 17-year-old striker is yet to play any senior football for Salzburg but enjoyed a prolific 2023/24 campaign at under-18 level, netting 16 goals across 20 ÖFB Jugendliga U18 league ties.

The teenager also scored four goals in four games at the U17 Euros this year and, as per The Daily Express, Man Utd have expressed an interest in signing him and have also held talks with the player's entourage.

All told, the hitman has scored eight goals in 12 games for Austria at U17 level and as per the report from The Express, former Manchester United and current Austria manager Rangnick has already earmarked Adejenughure as a player capable of making his way into the national team's senior set-up.

Along with United, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund are also believed to hold an interest in the striker, and it will be interesting to see what move the young sensation opts to make regarding his future.

Approach imminent: Everton want to sign "special" £20k-a-week winger

Everton are believed to be readying an approach for a "special" player in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Everton transfer news

The Blues continue to be linked with new signings ahead of next season, with Newcastle United youngster Yankuba Minteh a player who was being looked at, though he now seems set to join Lyon.

Iliman Ndiaye is a target who has been lined up as a replacement for the possible loss of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the Marseille ace described as a "ridiculously talented" footballer who could add quality and unpredictability in the final third.

Iliman Ndiaye for Marseille.

Meanwhile, Wilfred Ndidi stood out as one of the leading midfielders in the Championship last season, playing an important role in Leicester City returning to the Premier League, and he is being looked at as an upgrade on the ageing Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park at Goodison Park.

Midfield additions could also be important for Everton before the 2024/25 campaign gets underway, and Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove is also reportedly wanted by the Blues, being seen as a player who could link effectively with Jack Harrison.

Everton want "special" Championship winger

According to Football Insider, Everton are "readying an approach" for Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto this summer, with the Blues "turning their attention to a new move" for the Italian.

The Merseysiders came close to snapping up the £20,000-a-week attacker last summer and "have continued to closely monitor his progress at Leeds". It is also believed that he is "keen to move on after failing to secure promotion back to the Premier League with the Whites".

Gnonto could be just what Everton and Sean Dyche are looking for in terms of attacking reinforcements in the summer window, standing out as a young player with a huge amount of potential.

Admittedly, the youngster was outperformed by Crysencio Summerville for Leeds last season, but that's not to say that he didn't impress for the Whites, too, scoring eight goals in the Championship, which is more than any Blues player managed in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, former coach Michael Skubala has lauded him in the past, saying: "He’s a great lad, he’s a special player. He’s a credit to Leeds, he’s a credit to himself and he’s a really nice player to work with."

At just 20, Gnonto is still raw in aspects of his game, but his all-round end product should only improve with age, and Everton could end up enjoying the best years of his career.

To be a 13-cap Italy international this quickly says a lot about his ability and long-term ceiling, and if the Blues can beat others to his signature this summer, it could end up being a wonderful piece of business as the years pass.

Talks open: Crystal Palace ready bid to sign £100k-p/w Premier League ace

Crystal Palace are now ready to make a bid for a Premier League attacker after sealing their first signing of the summer.

Chadi Riad signs for Crystal Palace

It could turn out to be a relatively busy summer at Selhurst Park in the transfer market ahead of Oliver Glasner’s first full season in charge.

Steve Parish, Dougie Freedman and co have already secured the Eagles’ first addition of the window, with defender Chadi Riad joining from Real Betis.

Speaking after completing his move last week, the Morocco international said: “I’m really happy to join Crystal Palace. I was interested in coming here because of the history of the club, and the league in which it plays. They have been telling me how they played this year and I think it complements perfectly the way I play.

“The club has high-level players who are young and I have come here to follow their same trajectory, to grow as they have grown.”

Someone who Riad may not get the chance to play with at Palace is Michael Olise. There has been plenty of speculation regarding Olise and a move away this summer, while there have also been rumours of Eberechi Eze departing.

Should one, or both of Olise and Eze leave the club, then Palace will need creative attacking reinforcements, and it looks as if they are planning their move for one specific target.

Crystal Palace ready Reiss Nelson bid

According to CaughtOffside, Crystal Palace are ready to make an opening bid for Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson in the region of €10m (£8.45m). The Gunners want €25m (£21.1m) for the 24-year-old, with the Eagles even beginning talks to secure a move.

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson.

Crystal Palace aren’t alone, though, with Fulham and West Ham United also named as suitors for Nelson, who is now no longer in Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans at the Emirates.

Nelson, on £100,000-a-week in north London, has struggled for game time, contributing to four goals in 747 minutes of game time during the 2023/24 season.

He did receive praise from Arteta last year, though, with the Spaniard calling the winger “important” after his winner against Bournemouth. “I always saw the potential,” Arteta said of Nelson.

“The talent and the desire for him to do it, but he’s at a different level right now. I think emotionally, the experiences that he had helped him. Football-wise, it was my decision in the last two games not to play him because we had other options. But he was knocking on the door, he’s been training really good and it’s a good lesson for me and for the coaches that we need him and that he can be really important for the team.”

Nelson has made 89 senior appearances for the Gunners in total, scoring eight times and registering nine assists, and by the look of it, a move across London to Palace, Fulham or West Ham is one to watch this summer.
