Injury-prone Anthony Martial & unproven Rasmus Hojlund as the only options?! Man Utd's striker search becoming a real slog after turning back on Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen & Goncalo Ramos

Buying a world-class striker looked to be the Red Devils' top priority this summer but their chances of landing a proven goalscorer are fading fast

There was a lot of excitement as Manchester United kicked off their pre-season campaign against Leeds in Oslo. But after 45 minutes of action, there was a familiar feeling – an inability to take their chances.

Amad Diallo made some thrilling runs down the wing and Hannibal Mejbri was leading the charge from midfield. Mason Mount looked fully committed in his first outing for the Red Devils, pressing with intent, winning the ball back and playing incisive through balls.

But when United got into goalscoring territory, there was nobody to finish off their well-crafted moves. Amad’s shooting was wayward, Hannibal hit a shot straight at the goalkeeper and Jadon Sancho could barely make contact with the ball when given a dream cutback in the area from close range.

United ended up winning the game after Erik ten Hag made 11 changes at the break, with French hotshot Noam Emeran scoring a fine goal and Joe Hugill ripping the net with a powerful strike. But neither player looks likely to be in the Dutchman’s squad when United host Wolves in their Premier League opener on August 14.

If any conclusions are to be drawn from the friendly, they should be made from the more experienced 11 players who started the game. And in their 45 minutes on the pitch, there was a distinct lack of real goal threat.

Kane and Osimhen out of their reach

United’s need for a striker is more glaring than ever but one month into the transfer window, there is little sign of any major movement for a centre-forward. The club have already spent half of their budget to sign Mason Mount and need more than £40 million ($52m) to bring in Andre Onana from Inter, which has become a matter of urgency after David de Gea confirmed his departure after 12 years at United.

The four most obvious striking targets have proved too expensive for the club to seriously pursue. Harry Kane was Ten Hag’s top choice but Tottenham are determined not to sell their talisman to a direct rival and he is prohibitively expensive – at least £80m ($104m) for a player who turns 30 at the end of the month.

While Bayern Munich have had two bids for Kane rejected, United have not even made an offer for him, such is their lack of belief in pulling off a deal.

Victor Osimhen is six years younger than the England captain and another player United would covet but he is even pricier than Kane and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis recently claimed it would take £170m ($222m) to land the Nigeria striker.

Hojlund talented yet unproven and still costly

Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos and Eintracht Frankfurt hitman Randal Kolo Muani are in the second tier of targets but it would take a bid in the region of £80m ($104m) to sign either player, also effectively putting them out of United’s reach.

Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund has become United’s only realistic striking target but the 20-year-old still looks like a work in progress after scoring nine Serie A goals last season, albeit from just 20 starts.

Hojlund would be an intriguing prospect. He has been likened to Erling Haaland and has been in stunning form for his national side, scoring six goals in his first four matches, including a hat-trick on his debut against Finland.

But Hojlund is also looking unlikely to sign for United as his price keeps rising. The Dane appeared to be a low cost option towards the end of last season but Atalanta reportedly value him at £85m ($111m), a huge amount for a striker with only one campaign in Europe’s top five leagues under his belt.

The Italians may end up lowering their asking price but they are apparently not interested in taking any United players as currency and are only interested in a cash deal.

  • Getty

    Martial cannot be relied upon

Signing Hojlund would also load a lot of pressure on the youngster's shoulders. He would effectively become United’s first-choice centre forward due to Anthony Martial’s fragility and he would be expected to hit the ground running, with no time to bed in and learn under a more experienced striker.

Martial is still a quality forward and proved to be in a different class to Wout Weghorst when he returned from injury in March. But he simply cannot be relied upon to stay fit.

The Frenchman suffered six separate injuries last season, missing 33 matches in total, more than half of United’s games. And he failed to complete 90 minutes on even one occasion.

Martial was absent from the friendly in Oslo as he continues his recovery from the torn hamstring he sustained in United’s final league match of last season against Fulham, which ruled him out of the FA Cup final.

    Rashford needs a partner

But the thought of starting the new campaign without signing a striker is unfathomable. Despite finishing third last season, United scored only 58 goals, as many as ninth-place Brentford and fewer than every other side who finished in the top six.

And Marcus Rashford accounted for more than a quarter of those goals. While the 25-year-old can do a job as a centre forward, there’s no doubt that he is at his most dangerous on the left side of the attack and needs a central striker to bounce off.

With United set to make him their highest earning player with a bumper new contract, they need to make sure they get the best out of Rashford, and that means giving him a suitable and reliable partner.

Revealed: 2022-23 Champions League fastest players as Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk misses out on top spot and Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai doesn't make top 10

The fastest players in the 2022-23 Champions League proper have been revealed.

Manchester City would eventually lift the trophy, but there was plenty of standout physical performances before they bested Inter in the final. There are few sights more exciting in football than a player leaving their opposite number for dead in a foot race.

And, as the Champions League is the pinnacle of the European club game, there were plenty of speedsters on display in last season's competition. But who was the fastest?

Thanks to UEFA, we have an answer to that question. Below, GOAL reveals the 11 quickest players in the 2022-23 Champions League…

Dominik Szoboszlai (RB Leipzig) – 35.9km/h

Szoboszlai has plenty of strings to his bow, as Liverpool fans are discovering this season. Underpinning it all is his pace, which is evidence by the 35.9km/h top speed he registered in an RB Leipzig shirt during last season's Champions League.

    Rafa Silva (Benfica) – 35.9km/h

Benfica have produced some of the best young players in the world in recent years. However, their senior pros are special too. Last campaign, 30-year-old Silva proved he could still mix it with football's top athletes.

  • Getty

Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund) – 36.1km/h

Chelsea won't be surprised to find Adeyemi on this list. When they met Borussia Dortmund in the last 16, Adeyemi infamously left Enzo Fernandez in the dirt to score a superb solo goal.

Moussa Diaby (Bayer Leverkusen) – 36.1km/h

Morgan called the incident out on social media afterwards, questioning how “in what world is this not a penalty and red card, or even foul?” The 34-year-old claimed she would “100% not be walking” had she not spotted the lunge coming and taken evasive action.

The USWNT star is considered to have breached NWSL regulations with her complaints, leading to the organisation taking action. A statement from the leading division in American women’s soccer read: “The National Women’s Soccer League announced today it has issued a fine to San Diego Wave FC forward Alex Morgan for comments detrimental to the league made on social media on September 17, 2023, in violation of Section 12.2.5 (e) ‘Prejudicial Statements and Public Criticism’ of the League Operations Manual.”

The United States international returned to French football over the summer when completing a €40 million (£34m/$43m) transfer from Premier League giants Arsenal. He has been eased into the fold with new employers – having been forced to head away with his country shortly after joining – but is now up and running on the goal front.

Balogun was introduced by Monaco against Lorient in the 66th minute, and hit the back of the net in the 69th. He displayed quick feet when being picked out inside the box, with a low left-footed drive from a tight angle beating the Lorient goalkeeper at his near post.

Balogun’s effort completed an impressive turnaround from Monaco, who had found themselves trailing in just the second minute. Aleksandr Golovin restored parity in the 17th minute, before Balogun found the target in the second-half. Arsenal Women player ratings vs Aston Villa: Alessia Russo has lift off and Beth Mead is back! Lionesses combine for dramatic stoppage-time winner as Gunners leave it very late to secure first WSL win of the season

A chaotic second-half stoppage time completely changed the complexion of the Gunners' WSL meeting with Carla Ward's side

Holding a frenzied team huddle in just your third league game of the season is normally a sign that things aren't going as planned. And even after Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall took this drastic step in the aftermath of Aston Villa's first-half opener on Sunday, for a long time it seemed like his side's wait for a maiden WSL victory of the season would continue.

However, after Caitlin Foord had struck the post and Alessia Russo had missed a sitter, Katie McCabe started the fightback with a goal from an impossible angle in the 92nd minute. Then, Russo – the target of jeers all game upon her return to Manchester United last week – sent the Emirates into delirium.

Set up by the returning Beth Mead on the edge of the box, the England striker sprayed an effort towards the bottom corner. Daphne van Domselaar got a hand to it, but it wasn't enough to prevent the ball squirming over the line.

It's hard to overemphasise the magnitude of this result for Eidevall and his players. The 35,000 fans in attendance will be hoping that their side can use this as a platform to put their slow start behind them and properly establish themselves as potential title winners.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Manuela Zinsberger (6/10):

Very little to do other than pick the ball out of the net. Kept it simple with her passing.

    Noelle Maritz (6/10):

A steady display. Crossing could have been better.

    Lotte Wubben-Moy (7/10):

Defended really well for the most part and oozed composure on the ball.

    Amanda Ilestedt (4/10):

Had to do better for Villa's opener. Moved it too slowly during Arsenal's build up at times too.

    Steph Catley (6/10):

Did not do much wrong, though she was not tasked with much defensively.

    Midfield

    Kim Little (6/10):

Kept her side ticking over but forced it a little with some of her more progressive passes.

    Lia Walti (6/10):

Released McCabe with a world-class pass before the break. Needed more moments of that quality, though. Did not always looks comfortable in possession.

    Frida Mannum (5/10):

Not cute and clever enough in the No.10 role. Should have done better with an opening on the stroke of half time. Crossing not the best.

    Attack

    Katie McCabe (8/10):

Her team's only real source of attacking inspiration. Unbelievable goal kick-started the fightback.

    Alessia Russo (7/10):

Her hold-up and link-up play was absolutely brilliant, however, she just had to score in the second half from Foord's rebound. Luckily she made everyone forget that with an iconic goal.

    Caitlin Foord (6/10):

Started really strongly and pressed relentlessly. So unlucky not to score in the second half, with her fierce effort striking the post.

    Subs & Manager

    Victoria Pelova (7/10):

Set up McCabe for her excellent equaliser.

    Cloe Lacasse (6/10):

Tried to be direct and brave, which was exactly what her side needed.

    Stina Blackstenius (6/10):

Added an option in behind. She stretch Villa after coming on.

    Beth Mead (7/10):

Deafening cheers when she was introduced towards the end. And it only got louder when she assisted Russo's winner. What a story.

    Jonas Eidevall (6/10):

Two of his subs grabbed assists before full time. However, Arsenal probably shouldn't have been in need of such heroics at the end. They need to start games better.

Speaking to , Marsch said: "I love the Premier League and I love the power of what the league means globally, but honestly the true answer is I want to find like-minded people, who are committed to developing people, relationships and building something. I’ve been kind of hoping we can find some kind of connection back in the Premier League but if that doesn’t come I have to find what else is out there and what comes next for me."

Recalling his time at Elland Road, he added: "Working with the players was fantastic. They fought and gave everything they had for me. I appreciated working with them and enjoyed the whole process. When I said I was heartbroken it was really difficult for me to say goodbye to them and I didn’t because I knew if I stood in front of them I’d break down. So, I just individually dealt with a lot of them. Of course, there are always going to be questions coming from above when results aren’t going the way they should be.

"I understand why decisions get made. Obviously, I wish it would have been different and I firmly believe we were on track to get the necessary results and continue to build but this is football."

Last Month reported that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) are planning to introduce blue cards to the game and it could be implemented as early as next season. While the report claimed that the cards will not be used in top-tier competitions, they could be given a run out in domestic cup tournaments like the FA Cup and League Cup should the Football Association (FA) volunteer the tournaments as part of the trial. FIFA, though, had dismissed the idea of bringing blue cards in elite competitions.
