If England’s pace bowlers came to New Zealand hoping for pitches with a bit of life and nice carry for the Tests, they will have been disappointed. By accident or design, the slow surfaces have made for some attritional cricket and, coupled with weather that has deteriorated faster than the pitches, it has meant some long stretches in the field.A week ago, it was New Zealand feeling the strain after a 170-over stint in Dunedin and now it is England’s turn. The pace bowlers lacked vigour on the fourth day in Wellington with the overs racking up against each of their names. The main concern has surrounded James Anderson, who has spent the last two days regularly stretching his back, but it is being put down to the aches and pains of the day job rather than anything more serious.”Injury-wise, he’s fine,” David Saker, the England bowling coach, said. “I think he’s just struggling for a little bit of rhythm. The high standards he sets, he’d probably say he’s below his best at the moment. Test cricket’s a hard game, and it takes its toll on fast bowlers. He knows how hard it is, and I think he’ll be fine.”Some days you just have to go out there and get on with the job, and not complain about it. We’re not complaining about it. Some days you’re going to be sore, but that’s the job.”This Wellington pitch is far from the springy, seaming surface where James Anderson made his comeback in 2008. In New Zealand, there has been a trend towards slower, lower Test pitches which are certainly in contrast to the surfaces on show for the Twenty20s and ODIs earlier this tour which often flew through to make for compelling action.New Zealand have probably seen slower wickets as a way of narrowing the gap between the two sides especially after the confidence-sapping performance during the Tests in South Africa. Some of their batsmen were also uncomfortable against the bounce of Steven Finn during the ODIs. That is what home advantage entitles you to, and there is nothing wrong with it, but seam bowling is also one of New Zealand’s strengths and perhaps could have been backed a little more. For them, England’s 167 in Dunedin is appearing to be an anomaly.”If you watched the Twenty20 and one-day games, they were played on very good and fast wickets – which produced some good cricket,” Saker said. “The two Test wickets we’ve played on have been quite opposite to that.”I don’t know whether that’s something that New Zealand Cricket would put out, or just the way the wickets are. Just from where I’m sitting, I always like to see the ball get through and the batsmen playing off both front and back foot … seeing catches behind the wicket always excites me.”Finn has been the most disappointing of England’s pacemen in this series – in contrast to his new-found batting status – and while Saker admitted he would enjoy from more life in the pitches he also knows it is part of the development process Finn has to go through.”He would benefit from a wicket that bounces a bit as well, but he has to learn as well to get the batsmen coming forward, and try to get them out that way,” he said. “He again is probably struggling a little bit, with his rhythm. He’s started with a new run-up, and is still a young player trying to find his way in Test cricket. We’re pretty patient with him, and we’re going to stay that way.”

But Rubel is considered one of the frontliners even when the likes of Mashrafe Mortaza, Shafiul Islam and Nazmul Hossain were fit. Now that none of these three is in Sri Lanka, it had to be Rubel and Abul taking up the baton but they seem to have dropped it even before taking off, so to say.The seven boundaries in the first three overs jolted the Bangladesh side to the degree that the five-plus required run-rate in the remaining 38 overs hardly mattered as their body language slumped. Such a start, more often than not, leads to desperation and although captain Mushfiqur Rahim tried to rotate the bowlers, the conditions, the wicket and the lack of confidence among the pace bowlers could not restrict the hosts.The conditions remain an advantage to the pace bowlers, and there are other encouraging factors for them in the next two games too. Ziaur Rahman’s steady eight overs showed how control is possible, although he did not bowl during the powerplay. Rubel and Abul have the potential and they have the best chance to show their ability in this series when they are under pressure to bounce back.Coach Shane Jurgensen remained steadfast about the pace bowlers who have been under his guidance for the last year and a half. He wants them to bounce back quickly if Bangladesh are to have any chance in staying alive in the three-match series.”We were playing one-dayers after quite some time but we should have acclimatised quickly,” Jurgensen said. “We have to bowl better tomorrow, try to hit a good length and make sure our team remains in the hunt.”But there was frustration in his tone. As someone who even walks around the boundary rope to speak to the pace bowlers, it is quite clear that the first half hour on Saturday wasn’t comfortable for Jurgensen either.Tamim too backed the pace bowlers and hoped they would improvise soon. “The wicket changed in the second half,” he said. “It wasn’t easy at first, but dew helped the ball come nicely on to the bat.”I wouldn’t point the finger at anyone because we back each other when one of the departments doesn’t do well.”It was also noteworthy how the poor lengths bowled by the two pace bowlers affected the spinners. Whether the team’s needs are understood properly is a question that can be posed to Mushfiqur, Jurgensen and the selectors.

Watson was in charge for the final Test in Delhi when Michael Clarke was ruled out due to his back injury but he was unable to turn the tide of a series that flowed in only one direction, and a loss inside three days was hardly the way the Australians wanted to end the tour.The only other time Australia have lost a series 4-0 was when an exhausted squad flew directly from a Test tour in India to South Africa in 1969-70 and the loss at the hands of Ali Bacher’s men cost captain Bill Lawry his job. Not since a team ravaged by World Series Cricket departures lost 5-1 to England in 1978-79 had Australia lost this many matches in a Test series.”It’s extremely disappointing,” Watson said. “We came here with high hopes of having a good series here and the 4-0 here is what we deserved. The Indians have totally outplayed us. We haven’t played to our best unfortunately. It certainly has been a big learning curve and that is one of the biggest challenges for us as a team is continuing to learn very quickly. We have got quite a number of young guys who are still learning.”But with me for example, I haven’t scored the runs that I wanted. I knew how important it would be to be able to score runs to help the team get to a total while other guys are learning around me. That has been extremely disappointing, knowing I have played a lot of cricket here and I didn’t score anywhere near the runs that I wanted. Especially when the team is learning in these conditions, these conditions are as foreign as we will ever get around the world.”Watson was one of the biggest disappointments for Australia on this tour, averaging 16.50 in his three Tests, and he was one of three members of the top six who averaged less than 20. Watson’s drought without a century now stands at 39 innings and stretches back nearly two and a half years, and the dearth of hundreds is starting to spread: Michael Clarke scored the only one for Australia on this trip.”Hopefully I haven’t rubbed off on too many of them because that would be a shame if they all get my disease,” Watson said. “For all of us as top-order batsmen, it has been very disappointing. Michael continues to be in amazing form. We’ve all got to continue to strive for what Michael has been able to achieve as a batsman. All top-order batsmen, we have to be scoring big runs if we want to be considered in the top six and playing consistently.”It just hasn’t been good enough from all of us to be able to score the runs we know we needed, especially in the first innings. That has probably been the biggest disappointment. We know that conditions change later on as the game gets older. The first innings really is the important one to get a big total. I’m the first one to put my hand up because I certainly haven’t been good enough in this series.”For me as an experienced senior player, it’s part of my role to be able to stand up and score runs. It has been very disappointing not to be able to do that. I personally take a lot of blame for that. I take just about full responsibility to be able to show the way and I’ve certainly got to get a lot better.”However, Watson also said the challenging pitches at all four venues needed to be taken into consideration when assessing Australia’s batting.”The conditions here are very foreign and the conditions have been just about the opposite to anything we have got in Australia, that’s for sure, but also playing cricket here in the past whether it was Test matches, one-dayers or T20s, the wickets have been different to those as well,” he said. “It’s been a big learning curve for everyone.”To see how the wicket played in this game was certainly a huge challenge against their high quality spinners and even they struggled at times with our high quality spinners as well. We’ve all learned a hell of a lot out of this series. We certainly need to continue to improve and improve and improve very quickly.
