India captain MS Dhoni has backed the decision to rest key players for the one-day series against Australia, saying it gives a chance to blood younger players and add to the depth of the squad. There are just 12 more ODIs before the World Cup, hosted jointly by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, gets underway in February next year, and Dhoni wants to make sure his first-choice players aren’t hampered by fatigue or injury.”In last few series, we have not played with our strongest side and rested most players. Maybe injuries were a bit more concern, we are a bit cautious,” said Dhoni. “We don’t want our big players to get injured before a tournament especially when it’s happening in India. Hopeful everyone will get fit and for World Cup.”In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan is set to make his debut at the top of the order. Dhoni played alongside Dhawan in the Challenger Trophy in 2005 and, having seen his game develop, is keen that he gets a chance at international level.”Both of us scored in the Challengers in Mumbai. I got a chance to establish myself in the national team,” Dhoni said. “There has been ups and downs in his [Shikhar] career but he has been quite consitent. As an opener it’s quite tough, as you have Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir all at the same level. It’s good that he got a chance finally. Hope he scores and the bench will become stronger.”Coming off a resounding success in the Test series Dhoni knows his younger ODI side has a difficult to task maintain the high standards.”It will be a big learning curve for all youngsters. It’s very important to live in the present. Small and basic things that needs to be done correctly to make a mark at the big level. I won’t put extra pressure on them. Take one game at a time and give it your best shot.”While Dhoni can easily call for calm, his opposite-number Michael Clarke has a few worries after scoring just 35 runs from four innings in the 2-0 defeat in the Test series.Clarke admitted that he was below-par but denied feeling any extra pressure ahead of the final three games of the ODI series. “My performance in the Test series wasn’t good enough so I deserved that criticism and I am very disappointed about that,” he said. “I am not at all under pressure. Everybody is entitled to voice their opinion. I can’t change that. I’m training very hard as possibly as I can. I’m really excited about these two one-day games. My main priority is to win the two ODIs. We are really excited about the bright weather, hope it continues tomorrow.”The washed-out opening match at Kochi meant Doug Bollinger had a longer period to rest before the series got underway. Bollinger picked up an abdominal injury in the narrow defeat in the first Test and Clarke revealed that despite Bollinger’s good progress, no decision had been made on whether he’ll play.”He is going well, though he has not done enough bowling. It’s an important day for him today, he will have to bowl at the nets. Physio is happy with his improvement. But we need to make sure he bowls 10 overs for us tomorrow, otherwise I don’t think it’s worth a risk.”

Clarke fights, then falls, as England eye victory

Kevin Pietersen gave England every chance of victory in Adelaide with his career-best 227, but it’s his bowling that might have made the biggest difference

The Bulletin by Brydon Coverdale06-Dec-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMichael Clarke fought hard for 80 but his dismissal on the last ball of the day left Australia in some trouble•AFP

Kevin Pietersen gave England every chance of victory in Adelaide with his career-best 227, but it’s his bowling that might have made the biggest difference. Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey gave Australia a fighting chance of escaping with a draw to head to the third Test in Perth still 0-0, but the loss of Clarke to the last delivery on the fourth day gave England a major boost amid the gloomy conditions.Clarke had 80, and was threatening to stand between England and victory, until he inside-edged onto his pad and the ball looped over the shoulder of the short leg Alastair Cook, who took a good catch. Adding to the late drama, the umpire Tony Hill called the appeal not out, but England asked for a review and Clarke was found guilty of putting bat on ball, to hand Pietersen his first Test wicket since 2008.It was exactly what Australia didn’t need, after Clarke and Hussey put together a promising 104-run partnership. Instead of two established men walking out in the morning, the under-pressure Marcus North will join Hussey, who was on 44, with the new ball due at the end of the over Pietersen will complete with four more deliveries. And if that wasn’t pressure enough for North, there is a chance of morning showers, which could mean cloud cover and swing.Australia will be hoping the showers turn into heavier rain, and there is the chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. The battle will be ensuring they last that long, with only Brad Haddin and a long tail to follow Hussey and North, who will resume with Australia still 137 runs behind, at 4 for 238, searching for a draw that would feel like a win.It remains to be seen whether Andrew Strauss will rue his decision to bat into the fourth morning, despite already holding a 300-plus lead. He might have been questioning that call while Hussey and Clarke were together, batting solidly either side of a heavy downpour late in the afternoon. Clarke seemed to have shaken off his poor touch and his bad back, looking comfortable against pace and spin. And it wasn’t easy against Graeme Swann, who created the most problems for Australia. He removed Simon Katich and claimed the big wicket of Ricky Ponting, before Steven Finn chipped in by dismissing Shane Watson for another solid half-century that promised to be more. Swann was finding sharp spin from the rough and his drift and flight caused a few headaches for the Australian batsmen.Several times, inside edges didn’t quite fly to hand for the cluster of fielders surrounding the bat, and Clarke was given out caught at slip on 67 only to have the decision reversed on review; the ball had spun past his bat and lobbed up off his pad. Generally, though, Clarke handled Swann well, using his feet to smother the spin and driving hard through gaps on both sides of the wicket.Importantly, all the Australian batsmen played positively, refusing to simply bat for time and allow England to dictate the flow. Clarke struck 11 boundaries and Hussey, who continued his excellent series, slammed Swann over midwicket for six late in the day, ensuring that any bad balls were put away, as they would be in happier circumstances. The only batsman who really struggled was Ponting, who was mesmerised by Swann and couldn’t get off the mark until his 13th delivery. Despite punishing Swann with a vicious cut for four and a powerful sweep to the boundary, Ponting was eliminated by Swann on 9 when he played for the offspinner and edged a straighter ball low to Paul Collingwood at first slip.Swann had already ended the 84-run opening partnership when Katich tried to defend and was caught behind off a thin edge for 43. Katich had hobbled his way through the innings with an Achilles tendon injury that severely hampered his running between wickets, and although his hard work was valuable, there is every chance the Australians will need to look for another opener for the third Test in Perth if his problem persists. The man who threatened to be Australia’s anchor was Watson, who batted confidently with his usual aggression and well-timed drives, but once again he failed to convert a strong start. Watson has passed fifty on 15 occasions in Test cricket but only twice have those half-centuries turned into hundreds, and if ever Australia needed triple figures from him, it was this time.It was the patience of Finn, who peppered away consistently just outside off stump, that did for Watson when he edged to first slip for 57. The inability of Australia’s batsmen to capitalise on their starts was all the more frustrating for them given the monstrous scores racked up by England’s batsmen, led by Pietersen with his double-century.Pietersen added 14 to his overnight score but it was enough to beat his previous Test best of 226, which he made against West Indies at Headingley in 2007. He eventually fell caught by Katich at slip, when he misjudged a slog sweep, and it was a consolation wicket for Xavier Doherty, who finished with 1 for 158 and looked nowhere near as threatening as Swann.England’s batsmen scored their runs briskly after Strauss decided against declaring overnight, and in nine overs they pushed the total up by 69 before Strauss called a halt to the innings. Ian Bell had moved on to an unbeaten 68 and Matt Prior was on 27, which guided England to 5 for 620 – their highest Test innings total in 20 years and their fifth-best of all time against Australia. The visitors would be sorely disappointed if that effort doesn’t turn into a win. They’ll want a lift from James Anderson, who didn’t bowl at his best, while a stomach strain could keep Stuart Broad from playing much of a part on the final day. England can only hope the weather doesn’t play any role either.

Rangers team news on Roofe v RB Leipzig

Alan Hutton has dropped a Glasgow Rangers claim after what he has heard involving Kemar Roofe ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final.

The Lowdown: Available?

As per The Scottish Sun, Roofe is winning his fitness battle to feature in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final against RB Leipzig at Ibrox, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst is optimistic that he will play a part.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, the Dutch manager admitted that he ‘can’t say‘ for sure that the striker will make the squad, casting doubt on the validity of reports suggesting he’ll return.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Speaking to Football Insider after hearing those updates, former Teddy Bears right-back now Rangers TV pundit Hutton has claimed that his old team should play Roofe if he is ready, as it is simply a ‘huge’ game for them: “It’s a difficult one, isn’t it?

“On one side, I’m saying yes, take the gamble. If he’s training and he says he’s ready to go then you play him.

“You have to play them because this is huge. We do say it week after week but this is the next game and it is the biggest game.

“Obviously you’ve got a cup final coming up but I don’t think you can rest somebody just for that. If he’s fit and available, I think you play him.”

The Verdict: Worth the risk

Of course, Roofe may not be fully fit, and may suffer from a lack of match sharpness, but adding him to the squad is surely worth the risk given what is at stake.

The Light Blues trail 1-0 from the first leg, and Roofe is their second-top scorer behind Alfredo Morelos this season, with 16 goals in total over all competitions so far.

Nonetheless, van Bronckhorst would surely want to play with an out-and-out number nine in order to not complicate his tactics or system, and if Roofe is ready, he should be unleashed upon the Leipzig defence.

South Africa have left out offspinner Johan Botha, left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell and batsman JP Duminy from their line-up for the first Test against India in Centurion that begins on December 16. The three players, who were part of the original 15-man squad, have been released by CSA to represent their respective domestic teams in the latest round of the Supersport series that begins on Thursday. Parnell and Botha will play for the Warriors, and Duminy for the Cobras. The decision means Ryan McLaren and Lonwabo Tsotsobe are the candidates for the third seamer’s slot, while Paul Harris, should South Africa opt for spin, is a certainty in the playing XI. Duminy’s exclusion ensures Ashwell Prince will keep the No.6 slot.Meanwhile, South Africa captain Graeme Smith has said he is recovering well from a fractured ring finger on his left hand – an injury he suffered during the second Test against Pakistan in the UAE. He had his first net session on Monday, though he mostly faced up to slow bowlers. “I was very pleased with the way it went,” he said. “I am following the same processes I have always followed when coming back from injury. I will step up my batting schedule over the next two days.”South Africa squad for first Test: Graeme Smith (capt), AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Ashwell Prince, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Mark Boucher (wk), Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Ryan McLaren, Paul Harris, Hashim Amla, Alviro Petersen

Rajasthan set Baroda big task

Bhargav Bhatt picked up a five-for but could not stop Rajasthan from putting up a stiff first-innings target of 394

The Bulletin by Abhishek Purohit at Moti Bagh12-Jan-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBhargav Bhatt picked up five wickets but had to bowl 43 overs to get them•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Bhargav Bhatt toiled his way to a well-deserved five-wicket haul, but could not prevent Rajasthan from getting close to 400, a total which looks competitive on a wicket where uneven bounce is in play, with numerous deliveries failing to rise above ankle height. Jaykishan Kolsawala led a strong reply for Baroda, but Rajasthan managed to remove his opening partner Connor Williams, and will think they hold the initiative against a line-up that is thin on experience. That the second day saw more action after the dullness that had characterised the first was due to the batsmen taking more initiative, and the bowlers getting more help from the surface. While Bhatt was rewarded for his efforts, Murtuja Vahora got the ball to nip around and hurried the batsmen, though that was not reflected in his 36 wicketless overs that went for 108 runs.None of Rajasthan’s batsmen made a hundred, but the intent today was to look for every opportunity to score, and they added almost the same number of runs they had yesterday in fewer than two-thirds of the overs. The approach was characterised by Ashok Menaria, whose quick 45 inched Rajasthan close to the psychological mark of 400, even as the left-arm spinners Bhatt and Swapnil Singh were getting the ball to turn and bounce.Menaria’s innings was crucial as it came after Rajasthan had lost the pair of nightwatchman Vivek Yadav and Robin Bist, the latter to a ripper from Bhatt, with the score on 269. Bowling from over the wicket, Bhatt pitched one in the rough outside the right-hander’s leg stump, and got it to turn sharply past the angled forward push from Bist to uproot his off stump. Like yesterday, there was turn, but it was sharper, and the unevenness of the surface showed when consecutive deliveries from offspinner Aditya Waghmode took off to reach shoulder height, the second ball beating wicketkeeper Pinal Shah as well.Another wicket or two at that stage, and Rajasthan would have struggled to reach 350. Menaria showed the importance of being positive on this track, starting with two swept fours off Bhatt that went either side of the deep-backward square leg fielder. In the next over, he hit Waghmode for fours on either side of the wicket, and two overs later, looted 12 runs from Swapnil Singh with a six over midwicket and a four through extra cover. With Menaria dismantling the bowling and Rashmi Parida looking solid at the other end, Rajasthan added 120 runs in the first session, and were eyeing a total in the region of 450.Baroda, who had started to wilt under Menaria’s assault, came back with purpose after lunch, tying down the batsmen. Bhatt got Menaria pushing hard at one that gripped and bounced to take the inside edge, the ball then striking the pad before ending up in the hands of forward short leg.Parida ensured Rajasthan did at least get close to 400, playing safely, but using the steer, glance and sweep to pick up boundaries. He brought up his half-century with another sweep off Bhatt, but the tail did not offer him much support. Rohit Jhalani got a beauty from Sankalp Vohra, and Deepak Chahar and Pankaj Singh went to back to deliveries that came in and were bowled, though the ball that got Pankaj did not get up above his ankle. Bhatt bowled Parida with a quick yorker-length delivery in his 43rd over for his fourth five-wicket haul in ten first-class games.Pankaj and Chahar have formed a potent new-ball combination this season, but Kolsawala and Williams negotiated them safely. Both chose to defend the seamers mostly on the back foot. Kolsawala was a treat to watch, especially when he drove straight down the ground and through extra cover. An overly defensive approach could have played into Rajasthan’s hands, but Kolsawala made sure that didn’t happen.Rajasthan did end the day on a positive note, when Williams pushed at legspinner Yadav, playing for turn where there wasn’t any, and Aakash Chopra took a sharp diving chance at slip. The pressure of a final showed on Kedar Devdhar, who had made 4 and 0 in the semi-final, and looked anxious to get off the mark. But Rajasthan made him wait for 23 deliveries, and he finally got off the mark courtesy a misfield at mid-on. Rajasthan will hope the uneven nature of the track creates further doubts in the minds of the Baroda batsmen tomorrow, for whom 394 appears miles away at the moment.
