West Ham United: Paul Robinson worried by Jarrod Bowen ‘problem’

Jarrod Bowen isn’t the answer for West Ham up front in the absence of Michail Antonio, according to former England international Paul Robinson (via Football Insider).

The Lowdown

The Hammers scraped a 2-1 win over Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Cup on Saturday. Both goals were scored in injury time as Declan Rice netted in the 91st minute, sending the game to extra time, before Bowen bagged the winner in the 121st minute.

Striker Antonio was absent for the clash due to his international commitments with Jamaica. When questioned over the situation after the game, David Moyes described the situation as “not good”.

It is not clear whether Antonio will be fully fit in time to start against Watford on Tuesday.

The Latest

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson, a regular on Sky Sports News, gave his assessment of West Ham in the absence of Antonio, claiming that Bowen isn’t the answer for the Irons up front. He said: “I know Moyes believes Jarrod Bowen can play there but when he does, they lose his creativity from wide areas. That’s the problem.

“It is similar to [Harry] Kane at Tottenham and [Patrick] Bamford at Leeds. The way West Ham play is pretty rigid with an out and out number nine.

“When Antonio doesn’t play, they miss him dearly. They didn’t address it in the transfer market. [Andriy] Yarmolenko plays there occasionally but he’s not the answer. I think it’s an area they are light in.

“Moyes will have to be very careful when the European games start coming. If Antonio is out for a length of time they will miss him.”

The Verdict

Despite this, Bowen is the Hammers’ top scorer in all competitions this season, having netted ten times. Antonio is close behind, totalling nine goals, however, he has done so in seven less games.

Although the Jamaica international has been crucial to Moyes’ campaign, there have been times when he has looked poor and susceptible to fitness issues. This is illustrated by the mid-season period where he failed to score in eight top flight games.

So, while losing Bowen’s influence off the flank may be an issue, he can certainly match the club’s record Premier League goalscorer for impetus up front.

West Ham had the opportunity to rectify this issue in January, but after failing to secure the £60million club record signing of Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, Moyes may have little choice but to ignore Robinson’s words of warning and continue with Bowen through the middle.

– O Zé Ricardo me passou os nomes.

WSG hits out at BCCI charges of improper payment

World Sports Group has warned the BCCI that it will take necessary steps to enforce its agreement after the BCCI terminated the IPL media rights on grounds that WSG negotiated an improper payment from MSM

Tariq Engineer30-Jun-2010

The WSG chairman argues that the BCCI made it plain since the start of the IPL that Lalit Modi’s signature was the sole requirement for any contract•Associated Press

Sports marketing agency World Sports Group has warned the BCCI that it will take “whatever steps are necessary” to enforce its business agreement after the BCCI terminated the IPL media rights on the grounds that WSG negotiated an “improper” payment from MSM (Satellite) PTE LTD, the parent company of the league’s Indian broadcaster. In a letter to BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, WSG chairman and CEO Seamus O’Brian termed the charges levelled against the agency as baseless and said that the facilitation fee MSM had agreed to pay his company was legitimate. In 2009, MSM agreed to pay WSG a facilitation fee of Rs 425 crore as compensation for WSG relinquishing the Indian portion of the IPL media rights. The BCCI recently asserted that it had been unaware of the deal and having learnt of it, believes the money rightfully belongs to it, not WSG. The board subsequently cancelled its contract with WSG in a letter dated 28th June.In the same letter, Srinivasan accused WSG of colluding with suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi to cheat the board. “We strongly believe that the agreement was signed by you and Mr. Lalit Modi to defraud the BCCI of the amount of at least $80 million,” Srinivasan said. Modi had committed the board to compensating WSG if MSM defaulted on payment of the fee, something Srinivasan said Modi did not have the authority to do.In reply, O’Brian argued the BCCI made it plain to everyone since the beginning of the IPL that the chairman’s signature was the sole requirement for any contract and “binding on all matters.” To backtrack on that arrangement now would give everyone who signed agreements with Modi reason to believe the board had committed fraud by “telling the world that one of its officers had powers that he did not.”He went on to say that the BCCI and its advisors agreed that the board would compensate WSG if Sony defaulted on its payment and that the BCCI “needs to take responsibility for reading their contracts before and after they are signed, and not to feign knowledge when it best suits them.”On the subject of the fee itself, O’Brien said WSG does not do business without the opportunity to make a fair return, so it is no surprise the agency was compensated for giving up the Indian media rights. According to him, WSG has “considerable correspondence” with MSM on how the fee was agreed.”Your claim that this money belong to the BCCI is baseless,” O’Brian said. “On 15 March 2009, the BCCI agreed to license the Indian media rights to WSG (Mauritius) for Rs 4791.89 crores and on 25 March 2009 Sony entered into a license agreement to pay the BCCI Rs 4791.89 crores. Had an agreement not been in place, WSG would most likely have sub-licensed one of the other broadcasters it had been in negotiations with over the period (or indeed a sub-license with Sony itself), and any margin would also have been for our account and not the BCCI’s.”Furthermore, O’Brian contended that if WSG (Mauritius) and not signed the agreement on March 15, the BCCI would have found itself deadlocked in a contract dispute and without a broadcaster mere weeks before IPL 2. He also takes credit for the increased value of the new rights contract over the original one signed in 2008, saying “this would not and could not have been achieved without WSG.”O’Brian insisted it was impossible for BCCI to be unaware of the agreement as it was ratified by the IPL governing council. “Your claim that the BCCI was ‘never made aware’ of our agreement with Sony can simply not be true. The BCCI-Sony contract, subsequently ratified by the IPL governing council upon which you and many other BCCI officials sit, clearly references such an agreement, and what is more, it clearly references the fact that the payment obligations were created between Sony and WSG (Mauritius).”MSM had already paid WSG Rs 125 crores and was to pay the balance over the next seven years. However, MSM agreed last week to pay the BCCI the facilitation fee of Rs 425 crores instead, and has filed a suit in the Bombay High Court to recover the Rs 125 crores it has already paid WSG.

Everton suffer Yerry Mina injury blow

Everton manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that he is worried about Yerry Mina following the centre-back’s injury against Newcastle on Tuesday night.

What’s the story?

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Toffees boss said: “It’s a quad injury. We’re slightly concerned about it, but we’ll have to assess over the next few days. Obviously losing Ben the other day makes it a double-whammy in an area of the pitch where they’re two big players for us.

“We’ll have to look at ways going forward to players that come in with the way we set up to move forward. They’re big players for us, but we’ll have to try and find a way to move forward without them at least.”

Fans will be worried

Seeing the big Colombia international having to go off yet again during a game has become a bit of recurring theme for Toffees fans, with the centre-back’s injury record since arriving at Goodison Park questionable to say the least – he’s missed 28 games alone in the past couple of years.

When he has been on the pitch, he’s invariably mean the man to hold things together at the back.

Michael Ball has previously waxed lyrical about the centre-back earlier this season, saying: “Yerry Mina is fantastic. When he’s on form, he’s a monster. He just loves football, he’s always smiling, happy. He loves the fight, loves winning headers and loves a battle.

“Mina though, is probably our best centre half when he’s on form. In seven games, our points are the best in a long time at this stage of the season and Mina is key to that.”

It was no surprise then that following his first-half withdrawal, the Toffees looked far more shaky at the back against Newcastle, with The Liverpool Echo’s Adam Jones saying in his post-match player rating that he  “show(ed) promising moments in a physical battle with Chris Wood” – the Colombian won the joint-second most amount of aerial duels of any Everton player on the night despite going off in the 35th minute.

Being without Mina for the foreseeable future is a major blow to Lampard and one that will have Everton fans very worried.

Meanwhile, this Everton star let Lampard down vs Newcastle…

Cricinfo previews the deciding ODI between England and Bangladesh at Edgbaston

Big pictureBangladesh lit up their English summer and breathed life into the series with their shock triumph in the second game at Bristol. Having gone 15 ODI matches and 247 days without victory they turned their fortunes around with a display of remarkable hunger and spirit.England were outplayed but Andrew Strauss would accept his team were a touch casual. Fielding lapses, ill-disciplined bowling and some loose shots betrayed a side not operating at full intensity. Defeat to set up a series decider at Edgbaston should stir them. While it was Bangladesh who were parachuting in replacements for Saturday’s game, it’s England now who have the concerns. Ravi Bopara has had to come into the squad after Ian Bell fractured his left foot and there must be some worry over the form of James Anderson.Since being left out of England’s triumphant World Twenty20 side Anderson has cut a forlorn figure and his returns this summer – seven wickets in five matches against Australia and three expensive scalps in this series – have been poor. Tamim Iqbal’s flashing blade is enough to unsettle even the steeliest of bowlers but, in the crunch game, Anderson must prove he can rise to the mantle expected of England’s most experienced bowler.Really though, there is only one story. Bangladesh are chasing a dream series win that just two games ago looked completely unthinkable. They won’t start favourites, they rarely do, but they could finish on top of the world.Form guide (last five completed matches)England LWLLW
Bangladesh WLLLLWatch out for…Andrew Strauss has been in sublime touch this series and has, by some distance, looked England’s best batsman. Curiously for a man with 18 Test hundreds, Strauss’s conversion rate in one-day cricket is poor. England have talked for a long time about making more centuries and given his form at the top of the order, the captain could set the example at Edgbaston by scoring his fourth. Rubel Hossain turned the game at Bristol on its head when his pacey slingers removed England’s openers. Missing from the first match he gave the Bangladesh attack some much-needed fire to accompany the wily spin duo of Abdur Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan. He will need to provide the same incision if Bangladesh are going to have a chance.Team newsFor the England selectors there is the familiar problem of balance. Six batsmen would mean Ravi Bopara gets his first chance since September 2009 but force James Tredwell out again and leave the attack looking a touch one-paced.Five batsmen may nudge Ajmal Shahzad, who impressed with three wickets at Bristol, aside because of Tim Bresnan’s more robust lower-order batting. But new-ball wickets have been a problem for England for a while so they’ll be reluctant to let Shahzad go.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Michael Yardy, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 James Tredwell, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.Having secured a historic victory Bangladesh won’t be in a rush to meddle with the side. Expect an unchanged line up at Edgbaston.Bangladesh (possible) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Junaid Siddique, 4 Jahurul Islam (wk), 5 Mohammad Ashraful, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Rubel Hossain, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Shafiul IslamPitch and conditionsFortress Edgbaston has been a happy hunting ground for England over the last few years. Most recently though, the Barmy Army was replaced by an equally vociferous Pakistani crowd for the two Twenty20 games Pakistan played against Australia. It made for a thrilling atmosphere and both teams will hope for similar capacity-crowds for the series decider. Edgbaston has been a high-scoring ground in limited-overs cricket this season and will suit the free-flowing batsmen in both teams.Stats and Trivia Bangladesh have only one memory of Edgbaston, and it’s not a happy one. In 2004 they were bowled out for 93 in their Champions Trophy game against South Africa. Only one member of their side from that day survives – Mohammad Ashraful.Apart from a depleted West Indies team ravaged by contract disputes, Bangladesh have never beaten a major Test-playing nation in a one-day series. Quotes”I’ve said before there were a few chinks in the armour of this England team and I guess them leaving a few players out of their side weakened them a bit.”

Spurs not planning Kane contract talks

Tottenham are not planning on initiating contract talks with Harry Kane following last summer’s proposed deals being rejected, according to a report by David Ornstein for The Athletic.

The Lowdown: Kane linked with Manchester City…

The 28-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City last summer, with the Premier League champions’ manager having labelled him an ‘incredible striker’.

However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was determined to keep his star striker at N17. As such, the north London club rejected a seismic £125m bid for the player, and a deal failed to materialise before the end of the transfer window.

During City’s pursuit, Tottenham offered the England captain a lucrative contract extension. This was rejected, as Kane’s mind was already set on a move to the Etihad Stadium.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: No plans for Kane contract talks

Ornstein reported for The Athletic that Antonio Conte would love to tie down Spurs’ most-prized asset for the long-term, as the club pursue Champions League qualification.

However, Tottenham do not plan on initiating contract talks with Kane at this time, as the striker wants to assess the club’s progress and outlook before he makes a final decision on his future. Therefore, it is the player who will need to make the first move if talks over a contract extension are to commence.

Ornstein shared a link to the article via his Twitter account, stating: “Tottenham not planning to initiate Harry Kane contract talks – after deal rejected last summer, ball in his court”.

The Verdict: Blow for Conte

This news will come as a huge blow for Conte, who has seemingly formed a great relationship with Kane. Indeed, it was just this weekend that the 52-year-old hailed the England captain as a “world-class striker” after his match-winning double in a dramatic 3-2 triumph over City at the Etihad.

As per Fabrizio Romano, one of the main reasons why Spurs director Fabio Paratici wanted Conte at the club was that the 28-year-old would play the central role in his project, perhaps increasing the likelihood of the player remaining in north London.

However, with Tottenham’s reluctance to initiate talks following last year’s failed contract saga, Conte may well be concerned over Kane’s future with the club. If the Englishman chooses not to open talks and again looks for a move to Man City, it could materialise this time.
