Villa fans react to Man Utd ticket details

Aston Villa revealed on Tuesday that additional tickets for the home game against Manchester United next month are now on sale, and a number of Villa fans were quick to give their thoughts to the news on social media.

Villa’s clash with Burnley on Saturday was postponed just a couple of hours before the scheduled kick-off time due to an ongoing viral outbreak at Bodymoor Heath. The Premier League are set to continue playing through the festive period, though, after deciding against a circuit breaker on Monday.

Fans watching matches live at the stadium now need to provide NHS certification of either a double vaccination or a negative test prior to attending.

Villa shared details of tickets for the match against Manchester United on January 15, which comes just a few days after the clubs’ FA Cup third round clash at Old Trafford. Prices start at £29.50 for adults and go up to £55, with all the information available to view here.

Villa fans react

Here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply to the club’s official Twitter post regarding the ticket arrangements, with one labelling the prices as ‘absurd’ and others questioning why they are advertising it given the distinct possibility of the match being either postponed or playing behind closed doors.

Ponting sees no weak links in developing squad

This was a big season for Ricky Ponting’s men

United in victory: Australia’s next home engagement is the Ashes in November•Getty Images

Australia’s 2009-10 won’t go down in history as one of the great summers. It didn’t have the hype of an Ashes series, nor the tension of a contest against India, nor the raw combat of a series against South Africa. But don’t be fooled, this was a big season for Ricky Ponting’s men. It was an important two months during which Ponting’s hard work to mould a new-look outfit could have unravelled if the side had sunk into a post-Ashes-loss depression.Instead, his team won five of six Tests, enjoyed a whitewash against Pakistan and most importantly almost all the players made significant personal progress. In a bridging summer in the 18 months between Ashes battles, it was the best Ponting could have hoped for.His eyes are firmly fixed on England’s trip to Australia later this year, so much so that he stayed up on Sunday night to watch their defeat in Johannesburg. Following Australia’s victory against Pakistan in Hobart, he said there were no boxes yet to be ticked ahead of the Ashes in November.”I don’t think there are, to tell you the truth,” Ponting said. “I’m really comfortable with the way a lot of the guys have come on through the summer. If you look at Shane Watson in the opening role, it was probably something that we weren’t entirely sure about, coming in to the summer, but I think he’s put his own stamp on that role particularly well, as he has with his bowling as well.”Nathan Hauritz has certainly stepped up in this series alone to take 18 wickets in this series on two wickets, particularly in Melbourne and Hobart, that didn’t really offer much for him at all. That sort of return for a finger-spinner is a great effort. Those two guys in particular have really stood up and started to learn a lot more about themselves and about the game.”Watson was comfortably Australia’s best and most consistent batsman for the season, with 609 runs at 60.90. The ease with which he adjusted to the Test opening role was a surprise to everyone but the Australian selectors, and 13 wickets at 25.84 with a handy knack for reverse-swing was an added bonus.Hauritz and Mitchell Johnson shared the top bowling honours with 29 victims each but just as impressive was Doug Bollinger, who entered the summer with only one Test to his name and collected 25 at 20.80, bringing extra intensity to Australia’s new-ball efforts. Peter Siddle performed a workhorse role and finally gained some reward with five wickets at Bellerive Oval, which confirmed the attack is on track with Ben Hilfenhaus still to return. In the batting line-up, Ponting atoned for a quiet couple of months with nearly 300 runs for the Hobart Test, Simon Katich provided reliable starts, Michael Clarke built his highest Test score and Michael Hussey saved his career with a summer average of 55.77. Brad Haddin was very good behind the stumps and the only man to struggle was Marcus North, although Ponting defended his No. 6 and hoped he would bounce back on the tour of New Zealand in March.”He’s not a weak link at all,” Ponting said. “It was only a couple of Tests ago that we were saying he was probably our best and most in-form player. Coming in to this week I was in the same boat [out of form] and things change pretty quickly. I don’t see a weak link in our side at the moment. Hopefully everything turns out the way we want it for Marcus and he can go to New Zealand and have a good series there and then there won’t be any speculation about anyone in our line-up.”What has impressed Ponting most about the summer has been the clinical nature of his team’s victories. It began with a three-day mauling of West Indies at the Gabba and finished with a 231-run demolition of Pakistan. In all six Tests, even the draw against West Indies in Adelaide, Australia’s attack took 20 wickets, which was a major achievement given the struggles they had endured trying to knock sides over during the past year.”It’s been a great series for us, it’s been a great summer for us to tell you the truth,” Ponting said. “There was a fair bit of conjecture coming into the summer after the end of the Ashes about where we were going with our Test cricket and I spelled things out pretty clearly to the team about where I thought we were going and I think we have improved a lot through the summer.”You just can’t afford to have half an hour or an hour’s play where the game’s not going anywhere. You can’t afford to let that happen. Someone has continually got to put their hand up and make sure the game is going forward and that’s the way I will keep challenging the team. We certainly can’t be happy with just sitting back and accepting what we’ve done through the summer.”Australia have four Tests, two in New Zealand and two in England against Pakistan, before they set out to regain the urn at home. After their success over the past two months, those four games will be about fine-tuning rather than remodelling.

Rangers can replace Hagi with Simons

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst may have some work to do in the January transfer window if some speculation comes to fruition.

A number of players have been linked with moves to and from the Gers in recent weeks, with attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi one of those who has been touted with an Ibrox exit.

Galatasaray are reportedly keen on the deal for the former Genk man and it remains to be seen whether or not they will come in with a tangible offer for him in January. If they do and it is acceptable to Ross Wilson, van Bronckhorst may have to identify a player to come in and replace him.

Bye-bye Hagi

Rangers are reportedly leading the race to sign Xavi Simons from PSG and the teenager could be the perfect replacement for Hagi next month, who the club could be waving bye-bye to.

The Romanian international joined with experience playing first-team football in Belgium, Italy and Romania, but was only 21 at the time of the move. Transfermarkt valued him at £4.05m upon his permanent arrival at Ibrox and he has gone on to produce 14 goals and 21 assists in 83 matches for the Gers in all competitions.

At the time of writing (30/12/21), Transfermarkt value him at £5.85m. This shows that Rangers have been able to improve the £21k-per-week beast throughout his spell in Scotland whilst he has been making valuable contributions on the pitch with his goals and assists, making him an excellent signing.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano described Simons as “more than a talent” and his form for PSG’s youth team makes it easy to understand that praise. He has racked up five goals and six assists in 12 matches for the French side’s under-19 team, whilst he has also made three senior appearances.

Simons does not have the vast first-team experience that Hagi had under his belt, but – like the Romanian – he would arrive as a young player with the potential to improve. Transfermarkt currently value the 18-year-old sensation at £1.35m and the Gers could bring him in with the hope that he follows in Hagi’s footsteps and is able to grow his value whilst performing in the Premiership.

His performances at youth level are extremely promising and he could be the perfect replacement for the 23-year-old, as he has the potential and age to be a similar signing. There is no guarantee that he will be as successful, but his statistics for PSG’s under-19’s and the fact he has been picked by Mauricio Pochettino at the age of 18 suggest that he has a good chance of being a great signing for Rangers.

Leeds: Sky Sports drop on-air midfielder update

Sky Sports have claimed live-on-air that Leeds United are keen to add to their midfield options during the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: First through the door…

The Whites have already secured their first addition of 2022 in striker Mateo Joseph Fernandez. The club announced on Tuesday evening that the 18-year-old has joined from Spanish side Espanyol and has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract in Yorkshire.

Fernandez will go straight into Mark Jackson’s Under-23 side, with attentions now turning to some senior signings for Marcelo Bielsa, who has a number of star players out injured, one of which being Kalvin Phillips.

The Latest: Sky Sports claim

Sky Sports shared a clip from their live transfer centre show on their online blog (January 4, 11:02).

When it came to Leeds, as relayed by MOT Leeds News, reliable reporter Dharmesh Sheth said:

“Leeds United, they want to strengthen in midfield but the chief executive, Angus Kinnear, admits it’s a big challenge to recruit in this month.”

The Verdict: Who could come in?

Victor Orta is thought to be after defensive and attacking midfielders this month, with a number of players linked in recent weeks.

Former Leeds man Ronaldo Vieira has been rumoured to make a return, whereas journalists have addressed possible moves for summer targets Lewis O’Brien and Nahitan Nandez.

Leeds could do with making early progress this month when it comes to bolstering their midfield ranks, especially with a crunch clash with relegation rivals Newcastle United on January 22, so hopefully, by that point, Bielsa will have at least one new midfielder to call upon.

Shaun Tait called up as cover for Peter Siddle

Shaun Tait, the Australian fast bowler, has been added to the squad as a standby for Sunday’s fifth ODI against Pakistan

Shaun Tait, the Australian fast bowler, has been added to the squad as a standby for Sunday’s fifth ODI against Pakistan. The last-minute call-up is due to Peter Siddle’s continuing back problem and gives Tait a chance to play his first international match in a year.”Peter Siddle is still being troubled the back pain which kept him out of the third match of the series in Adelaide,” Australia’s physiotherapist, Alex Kountouris, said. “As such he is in doubt for tomorrow’s fifth ODI and therefore another fast bowler has been included as a standby player.”Tait also had a series of injury problems, due to which he has focused only on limited-overs matches for South Australia so far this summer. During an eventful winter he was prevented from playing in the IPL by Cricket Australia, who didn’t originally offer him a contract but handed one out when Andrew Symonds’ deal was terminated.”Shaun Tait at his best is a destructive fast bowler in both limited-over and Twenty20 cricket,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of the national selection panel, said. “He has progressed well this season and performed well in both the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash and the recent Ford Ranger game against New South Wales in Wollongong and we are sure he will be ready should he be required for tomorrow’s match.”With Clint McKay and Ryan Harris adapting to international cricket well, and Mitchell Johnson waiting for his first one-dayer of the summer, Tait’s chances of getting a game are slim.

Newcastle transfer news on Ludovic Blas

A journalist has revealed that Newcastle United are now in talks to sign Ludovic Blas in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Standout season

The 24-year-old is enjoying a standout season at Nantes at the moment, scoring seven goals and supplying one assist in 19 games in Ligue 1 from midfield and currently ranking as the club’s fourth-best player (WhoScored).

He is averaging more shots and dribbles per match than any of his teammates, and he could be one for France national team coach Didier Deschamps to consider ahead of the World Cup in Qatar next winter.

The Latest: Newcastle talks

As per The Daily Star journalist Jacque Talbot on Friday evening, Newcastle and Watford are both in talks to sign Blas this month, while there is also interest in the player from Lille and from abroad. He revealed on Twitter:

“Understand Newcastle and Watford are in discussions to sign Ligue 1 star Ludovic Blas.

“The 24-year-old is talking to the Premier League relegation rivals who are set to play tomorrow, while there is also interest from Lille and in the Bundesliga.”

Of course, the two English clubs vying for Blas played out a 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, so talks may now intensify in the coming days.

Intriguingly, the Nantes maestro is represented by the same agency as Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, both of whom have signed for the Magpies since the start of the month.

The Verdict: Get it done

Newcastle are severely lacking in goals from the middle of the park, and Blas could certainly provide that given his record this season.

Nantes teammate and former Liverpool player Pedro Chirivella has previously described the 24-year-old as a ‘pure talent’, as well as an ‘incredible’ and ‘spectacular’ player. The Spaniard has even compared him to former Anfield teammates Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho (So Foot), which is very high praise indeed.

At 24 years of age, Blas still has such a high ceiling, and he could provide that extra bit of quality that the Tynesiders need in order to avoid relegation to the Championship.
