Steven Gerrard is reportedly keen on bringing Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres to Aston Villa.

That’s according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, and the links have naturally had a number of Villa fans talking on social media.

According to Fichajes earlier this week, Torres is a player who Gerrard admires, with the new Villa boss keen on upgrading his centre-back options. It will cost around €50m (£42m) for Villarreal to part ways with the 24-year-old, who has also been attracting interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Torres appears to be at the top of his game, with a career-high £45m Transfermarkt valuation, and he reached 100 appearances for his current club earlier this month. Notably, his 89.1% passing accuracy rate in La Liga is better than anyone to have started a league match for Villa this term.

Villa fans react

Total Villa relayed Fichajes’ claim regarding Gerrard’s interest in Torres via Twitter early on Thursday morning.

Aston Villa have been handed a potential boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture.

Whar’s the latest?

According to a report by Birmingham Live, Jack Grealish’s absence from Manchester City’s matchday squad on Sunday would appear to suggest that the 26-year-old will once again be an injury doubt for the trip to Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

The England international has not featured in the league since October due to a knock, with Birmingham Live adding that the former Villa player’s continued absence would come as a significant boost for Steven Gerrard and his side.

Fans will be buzzing

While many Aston Villa fans could well be wishing their former hero the best in his career after securing a £100m move to the Etihad Stadium this summer, the news that the 26-year-old could miss out on a return to his former club will nevertheless have left much of the Villa Park faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over his nine Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, the £90m-rated man has scored one goal, registered two assists and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 1.8 shots and making a whopping 2.9 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the versatile 26-year-old average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.30, not only ranking him as City’s joint fourth-best performer in the league but also as the joint 17th-best in the entire division.

As such, not only would Grealish’s absence on Wednesday remove the possibility of seeing the former Villa playmaker against them, it would also appear to considerably boost Gerrard’s chances of picking up a result against the second-placed team in the Premier League.

Mike Procter, South Africa’s convener of selectors, has backed opener Herschelle Gibbs to bounce back after being dropped from the ODI and Twenty20 squads to face Zimbabwe and England at home next month. Procter explained that Gibbs’ inconsistency had cost him his place and added that his omission will leave the door open for experimentation at the top of the order.Gibbs failed to get going for the Cape Cobras in the Champions League Twenty20 in India, scoring just 43 runs in four games. Alasdair Gold has dropped a worrying update on the current state of the Tottenham Hotspur squad.

In a recent post on Twitter, the Football.London journalist revealed that a number of Antonio Conte’s side have fallen ill as a result of the ongoing global pandemic, something which would appear to jeopardise Spurs’ UEFA Europa Conference League fixture against Stade Rennais on Thursday evening, as well as their Premier League clash against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

In his tweet, Gold said: “Understand that Spurs have indeed had a [viral] outbreak in their camp this week.”

Conte will be outraged

While Gold revealed in his follow up article for Football.London that, at present, it is understood Tottenham would be able to fulfil their European tie on Thursday evening – as the rules for the competition state that, as long as a club has 13 registered players available for selection, the fixture will be played – the fact that Conte’s preparation for the fixture has been thrown into disarray will have undoubtedly left the Italian incredibly worried.

Indeed, the 52-year-old is known for his incredibly meticulous training sessions, something that would very much appear to be under threat following a number of Tottenham’s first-team players and staff falling ill.

Furthermore, with Spurs needing a result against Rennes if they are to progress to the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League, the fact that Conte could be missing a number of key first-team players, as well as some of his coaching team, will undoubtedly come as a huge blow to the former Inter Milan manager’s chances of picking up all three points against the Group G table-toppers.

As such, Gold’s update is undoubtedly a worrying one for all involved with the North London side, who will be hoping that their current predicament will be clarified upon further testing that is being carried out on Tuesday.
