Australia suffered more bad news on the morning after their Ashes defeat with Brad Haddin, their senior wicketkeeper, sent home with a broken finger. Haddin is almost certain to miss the ODI and Twenty20 series in England in the hope of recuperating in time for the Champions Trophy, although team management have yet to rule out the possibility of him returning to the UK later in the tour.Haddin suffered the fracture to his left ring finger moments after the coin toss at Edgbaston, and while he missed that match, he played the final two Tests at Headingley and The Oval with the assistance of pain-killing injections. He underwent further scans on Monday morning, after Australia’s 197-run defeat at The Oval, and will return home to allow the finger time to heal.”It has now been decided Brad will return to Australia to allow him further recovery time and consultation with specialists to determine the best possible management of the injury,” Australia’s physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said. “His participation in any of the one-day and Twenty20 components of Australia’s VB Tour of England and the ICC Champions Trophy will be decided after consultation with these specialists.”Australia had already flown Tasmania’s Tim Paine to England as cover for the back-up keeper, Graham Manou, for the Oval Test. Manou is not in Australia’s ODI squad, leaving Paine to slot in, if needed, for Friday’s one-day game against Scotland in Edinburgh, the ensuing two Twenty20 matches at Old Trafford and the seven ODIs against England.Australia have yet to name a reserve wicketkeeper, although 27-year-old Chris Hartley, the incumbent Queensland glovesman who is playing in the Northern League near Manchester, deputised for Manou and Haddin during Australia’s two-day warm-up match in between the fourth and fifth Tests.

Sunderland predicted XI to face Ipswich

Sunderland play host to Ipswich Town on Saturday at the Stadium of Light as they attempt to end a run of three straight defeats in League One.

It was recently reported that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is unhappy with the club’s management at this current juncture and the pressure is mounting on Lee Johnson to turn things around in the coming matches.

Their last performance did little to help matters as they lost on penalties to Bradford after a 1-1 draw in normal time in the EFL Trophy. They were also dumped out of the FA Cup at home to Mansfield for the second season in a row at the start of the month.

How many changes will Johnson make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make seven alterations to the side from the Bradford game, with Carl Winchester, Dennis Cirkin, Tom Flanagan, Callum Doyle, Aiden McGeady, Dan Neil and Ross Stewart all coming in.

Hoffmann could keep his place between the sticks, but we are predicting an entirely new back four to the one which faced Bradford. Flanagan and Doyle missed out due to international duty, with the pair now available to return, whilst Winchester and Cirkin could come in for Lynden Gooch and Kenton Richardson.

We recently published an article explaining why Gooch has let Johnson down this season and that is part of the reason why he should be axed from the side, along with him playing out of position at left-back. Meanwhile, Richardson did not do enough against Bradford to warrant another start, as he lost possession a whopping 27 times that night.

In midfield, Dan Neil could come in for Harrison Sohna. The youngster received a SofaScore rating of 6.6 as he won two of his four duels in the match against the Bantams, whilst Neil has averaged a rating of 6.86 in League One this season and chipped in with one goal and five assists.

Finally, Stewart and McGeady could replace Leon Dajaku and Elliot Embleton, with Nathan Broadhead being moved into a wide right position following his goal against Bradford.

Stewart has 10 goals in 15 League One matches this season and has shown that he has the ability to be a match-winner for the Black Cats, which is why he could be relied upon from the start at centre-forward. McGeady has two goals and four assists in 12 league appearances and has averaged a superb rating of 7.11, making a strong argument for his place in the team today.

Crystal Palace should move for Nicolas Pepe

Crystal Palace could form a deadly duo after being linked with Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux (as relayed by SportWitness), the Eagles are one of three Premier League clubs interested in securing the 26-year-old’s signature, with Newcastle United and Everton also listed as potential suitors.

An enticing short-term loan move including an option to buy has been outlined as the most option given Pepe’s recent struggles, meaning Palace chairman Steve Parish may have to act quickly in order to secure his target’s signature.

Imagine him & Odsonne Edouard

The south London outfit have made a hugely encouraging start to life under new manager Patrick Vieira, but the Frenchman’s squad rebuild is far from complete.

Following Andros Townsend’s departure over the summer, Palace lack a natural option on the right-wing, with Jordan Ayew and Michael Olise both preferring to play through the middle.

Therefore, Vieira needs to acquire a player in the mould of Pepe over the next couple of transfer windows in order to continue his progression at Selhurst Park.

Despite failing to live up to the extremely high expectations that his club-record £72m price tag brought at Arsenal, the Ivory Coast international remains a talented player.

In 98 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions, Pepe has found the back of the net on 25 occasions, laying on a further 18 assists for his teammates.

After bagging a brilliant brace via two outstanding free-kicks against Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Europa League, former manager Unai Emery labelled his efforts “perfect”, highlighting just how dangerous he can be on his day.

And the prospect of Pepe linking up with one of Palace’s new, exciting attacking talents under Vieira’s tutelage is surely a mouth-watering prospect for everyone associated with the club.

Edouard has settled into life in the Premier League with ease following his switch from Celtic, notching up three goals in his first nine outings.

With the extra creativity and chance creation that Pepe would bring, that tally would surely increase exponentially in the second half of the season, should the Ivorian make the move across the capital.

Crowe unveils plans to save Tests

The former New Zealand captain, who is also a member of the MCC’s World Cricket Committee said the games would eventually become day-night Tests

Martin Crowe’s idea was to spice up contests involving lower-ranked teams•Associated Press

Former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe has come up with an idea to reinvigorate Test cricket: a knockout Test championship to be held every year with a final to be played at Lord’s. Crowe, who is also a member of the MCC’s World Cricket Committee, said the games would ideally eventually become day-night Tests.Crowe will present his plan to the ICC in November and also sent his idea to the , in which he mentioned the potential danger to the longest format. His idea was specifically designed to lift the flagging interest in contests between lower-ranked teams, as their games would become elimination matches.”If we don’t do something soon then the bottom teams in particular will wilt away and the bottom will fall out of the pinnacle format of the game,” Crowe said. “Test cricket needs a meaning and a new motivation among all these other shorter version comps that are scheduled every year. It needs a Test champion, annually.”Among the issues that could hamper the committee’s proposal is the sharing of broadcast revenue during the finals by the concerned boards. India and England are believed to have opposed the Test championship idea because it would mean splitting the profits of their lucrative television deals. But Crowe had a ready solution. ”If hosting quarter-finals is shared, then you don’t have an issue with sharing rights,” he said. “This is for the top eight teams only, which would exclude Bangladesh in the next stage. But if they get up to top eight in next stage then in they go.”For those who make the semis and finals then the pie is shared with them. Obviously, [the] ECB would demand a hosting fee for the final and semis – and why not? Or the semis can be played earlier if the two teams involved want to arrange it, higher ranking gets advantage or if the event is already scheduled in the FTP. These are smaller problems to overcome.”The ICC is keen on a Test championship in some form, but developing such a plan that is welcomed by all countries has been problematic. The ICC’s chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, said a Test championship could be implemented by 2012, if all the ICC’s members agreed.”I would like to convince people that the way to ensure Test cricket survives is through a championship model,” Lorgat told the . “The only two countries who do not see the argument are India and England, but debate is growing all the time. The MCC seem to have come out in favour but when I met the ECB recently it was the wrong time to tackle them in detail. They were too high on the Ashes.”The ICC would need to reconsider the Future Tours Programme (FTP), which requires countries to regularly play each other home and away in series of at least two Tests while allowing the national boards to hold longer series, such as the five-match Ashes campaigns. However, Crowe believed the good of the game must be put ahead of national interests.”There are pitfalls with the FTP scheduled years out so they must, over the next full stage of the FTP, ensure it rotates fairly and everyone gets a go to host quarter-finals,” Crowe said. “Like all good competitions, everyone starts with a fair chance. This gives incentive to the lower teams to be motivated every year. The motivation is to play the final at Lord’s. That is truly meaningful.”When a series is drawn then rankings apply – so that means every Test played has a meaning. So what we are creating here is by using an already existing schedule, we are able to use a simple knockout format to crown the Test champion each year. This we could call the Test Cricket Open.”Tony Lewis, the chairman of the MCC World Cricket Committee, which also counts Steve Waugh, Anil Kumble, Mike Atherton, Rahul Dravid and Andy Flower among its board members, said: ”We’re quite happy for this proposal to get knocked down by a better idea. But I think we all would agree that something needs to be done. As long as the ICC bring cricket sense to political bias, then things should be possible.”

O jogo fica diferente.

Cooley praises 'champion' Lee

Australia’s stand-in coach Troy Cooley has praised Brett Lee for his spirited comeback from injury after he skittled out five England batsmen in Saturday’s Lord’s ODI

Australia’s stand-in coach Troy Cooley has praised Brett Lee for his spirited comeback from injury after he skittled out five England batsmen in Saturday’s Lord’s ODI, and says there is more to come from him. Lee was forced to sit out all five Ashes Tests with a side strain but made a comeback on the one-day leg of the tour, saving his best performance of 5 for 49 in the series-winning match.”To see what he’s been through, when he broke his foot and came back again, then tear a side and get his fitness up and see him hit that top-end pace which we know he’s got and to sustain that, it’s obviously very pleasing for Brett and all of us,” Cooley told reporters.Lee crossed the 90mph mark regularly at Lord’s and constantly slipped in the inswinging yorker. Four of his five victims were bowled. Lee spoke confidently of crossing the 100mph mark and Cooley – also a fast-bowling coach – has backed him to achieve that feat.”As you can see [from his display at Lord’s], he has got the most ferocious inswinger in the game at the moment,” Cooley said. “He keeps saying it [crossing the 100mph mark], so we’re happy to keep pushing him up there. He is doing all the right things to make sure he is at full tilt whenever he can be, he is a champion.”We still think he’s got a little bit to go, he thinks he has a little bit more to go, so we’re happy to facilitate the development of that.”Lee narrowly missed out on selection for the first Ashes Test at Cardiff, which Australia failed to close out on the fifth day despite having England nine down. Former New South Wales and Australia wicketkeeper, Steve Rixon, believed Australia sorely missed a bowler of Lee’s ability in that game.”I know it was only a one-day game, but if he can produce a five to 10-over spell like that during a Test match, he has the pace and ability to swing the ball that changes the pattern of a game,” Rixon told the . “He can be a dangerous weapon.”There aren’t too many bowlers who can hit the base of the stumps that often. I know he was injured before the first Test in the Ashes [with a side strain], but if you take that game where we have 70-odd balls to get a final wicket, Brett would have been that person who can do that something special at the death.”Cooley is filling in for Tim Nielsen, who decided to head home to be with his family, and said he has no intentions of taking on a full-time coaching role with Australia.”It’s a caretaker role at the moment, I love my role within the fast bowling group. I have a great job back home with the fast-bowling programme, so I’ve got no eyes on taking ‘Vinny’s’ (Nielsen’s) job,” Cooley said. “It’s basically just to be able to make sure he can have a break and come back refreshed.”I’m very happy to be doing what I am at the moment and when Vinny said look after this team I said ‘Okay, only if it’s short-term’.”
