Celtic: Kieran Devlin answers Graeme Mathie question

Celtic reporter Kieran Devlin has responded to a question regarding Graeme Mathie and a possible Parkhead return.

The Lowdown: Mathie’s visit

Mathie left Hibernian at the end of September following seven years at Easter Road, where he was sporting director.

He was then spotted at Celtic Park last weekend in the directors’ box for the Hoops’ 2-0 win over St Johnstone, sparking rumours of a possible move.

The 38-year-old is a former youth manager and analyst at Celtic, and Devlin has weighed in with his views on Mathie.

The Latest: Devlin’s claim

Devlin ran a Q&A with supporters on The Athletic for Celtic’s meeting with Hibs on Wednesday.

Before the 3-1 win, he was asked by one fan if it was true that Mathie was present at Parkhead and if he was being courted for a role at the club.

Devlin, who labelled Mathie as ‘very smart’, had this to say in reply:

“He was there yes, can’t comment on whether or not he might be being lined up, don’t know myself yet.”

The Verdict: One to keep an eye on…

Even though Devlin isn’t sure if Mathie’s presence at Celtic will go on to lead to a return, it could be one to keep a close eye on.

Celtic are still on the hunt for a permanent director of football and a head of recruitment, so bringing Mathie back to a club he will know well could be handy, especially with his off-field experience in Scotland.

He was hailed as ‘fantastic’ by Hibs chief executive Ben Kensell, and Devlin is also clearly a fan, but only time will tell if he returns to the club.

In other news: Lost the ball 48 times, 28 duels lost, 0 shots on goal: Celtic’s terrible trio despite Hibs win.

Younis retires from Twenty20 with a plea

No immediate announcement was made as to the identity of his successor as 20-over captain

The last act: Younis Khan lifts the World Twenty20 trophy and a short while later announced his retirement from the format•Getty Images

Younis Khan used cricket’s grandest stage to announce his retirement from Twenty20 internationals, and make an impassioned plea for teams to once again tour his country. The Pakistan captain, speaking after Sunday’s emphatic eight-wicket World Twenty20 victory over Sri Lanka, hoped the result would go far to saving cricket in his homeland, which is struggling to attract the interest of younger generations with no international matches being played within its borders.Younis’ final act in Twenty20 international cricket was to lift the trophy that so narrowly evaded Pakistan two years prior. No immediate announcement was made as to the identity of his successor as 20-over captain, but it is likely Shahid Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal will be the leading candidates.”This is my last Twenty20 game,” he said at the conclusion of his press conference. “I’m old now for this kind of cricket.”Younis will continue to play Test and ODI cricket, and hopes he will again have the opportunity to lead his national team on home soil. The deteriorating security situation in Pakistan – highlighted by the March terror attack on the Sri Lankan team bus outside the Gadaffi Stadium – has prompted national boards and the ICC to push for Pakistan’s home matches to be played in neutral venues. Accordingly, Younis’ men now lead a virtually nomadic existence.Younis has previously warned that the absence of international cricket could kill the game in Pakistan and push impressionable youngsters into the clutches of terrorists. Speaking at Lord’s on Sunday, he implored teams to return to Pakistan, and expressed hope that his side’s World Twenty20 victory would help reinvigorate interest in cricket among his nation’s youth.”I am requesting to all of the countries: ‘You must come to Pakistan’,” Younis said. “Everybody knows law and order is not good but it is not our fault. Especially for youngsters, we need home series because everywhere there is no cricket in Pakistan. How can we motivate the youngsters, especially at school level and college level? I think this will be helping us build a new structure in Pakistan for our future.”How can we promote cricket to our youngsters if there is no international game in Pakistan? How can I motivate my son and my neighbours’ small children? That’s why we need cricket in Pakistan. Law and order is not good, but this is not our fault. We are suffering at the moment from these kinds of things. I think sports should be away from politics.”Younis dedicated Pakistan’s World Twenty20 triumph to his former coach Bob Woolmer, who died during the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean.”This final must go to Bob Woolmer,” he said. “He was doing good things with us in 2005 and especially my cricket. I would be very proud if he was alive and sitting with me because he’s a very nice guy and was a father figure for us. Why I am captain is because in 2005 – at that time I was not a regular player for Pakistan – he was the guy who all the time was chatting with the chairman and the selectors that Younis will be the next captain. So because of him I have become a captain. I dedicate this final to Bob Woolmer.”

Rangers: Tavernier stars in Motherwell win

Rangers returned to winning ways on Sunday lunchtime as Steven Gerrard’s men put on a clinic in attacking football as the Gers hit their opposition for six.

The Glaswegian outfit slipped up last week and allowed their city rivals back into the title race. However, they were able to extend their lead at the summit again this weekend after hammering Motherwell 6-1.

It was a highly impressive victory from Rangers who actually went 1-0 down before dazzling their supporters at Fir Park.

Alfredo Morelos was charged with leading the line but it was his offensive colleague in Fashion Sakala who stole the show.

The Zambian had only scored one prior to their clash this weekend but the striker well and truly announced himself as a Rangers player.

He scored a wonderful hat-trick, putting the Motherwell defence to the sword. However, he couldn’t have done it without their unsung hero of the day; James Tavernier.

The skipper’s place in the side hasn’t always been stable over the last few campaigns with Nathan Patterson staking his claim last season and the right-back upsetting supporters back in 2019/20.

Yet, he has bounced back and proved why he is so valuable to Gerrard and the team.

As Rangers scored six times this week and opened up their gap to four points at the top of the Premiership, it was their flying defender who gave them a huge helping hand.

Some of the statistics he amassed were incredible as he lost the ball on a whopping 41 occasions. However, the story behind that tally is easy to see. He was a creative marvel from the right-hand flank, attempting no fewer than 29 crosses.

With that in mind, it was hardly a surprise to see that Tavernier had more touches (133) than any other player on the field.

The £7.2m-rated gem scored a precise volley at the back post to level the score just before the interval and then helped himself to two assists, supplying a mesmerising eight key passes in the process.

It was a complete display from the captain going forward but he also weighed in defensively, winning four of his physical duels.

All of that led to a SofaScore match rating of 9.6 for the 30-year-old which happened to be the second-best behind their goal-scoring sensation; Sakala.

He will no doubt receive most of the plaudits, something he undoubtedly deserves, but Tavernier deserves equal praise for what was a remarkable performance that typified a modern-day full-back.

AND in other news, Gerrard could unearth Charlie Adam 2.0 in Rangers gem with “great future in the game”…

Spurs eye Conte’s new Lukaku in January

Antonio Conte wants to bring Dusan Vlahovic to Tottenham Hotspur, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla (via Sport Witness) claims that Spurs have already held talks with Fiorentina over a potential deal ahead of the January transfer window.

It’s thought that the 52-year-old head coach has already asked Lilywhites sporting director Fabio Paratici to make it happen, so the north Londoners have emerged a serious candidate to secure the young striker.

La Viola are expected to sell Vlahovic either in January or the summer but currently value him between €60m (£51m) and €70m (£56.7m), though that could drop by €10m (£8.5m) before next season.

Lukaku-like talisman

In the Serbian forward, Conte could find his next Romelu Lukaku, who delivered bags of goals under the Italian at Inter Milan, helping steer them to their first Serie A title in over a decade last season.

As per Transfermarkt, the Belgian powerhouse – who is now at Conte’s former club and Spurs’ rivals Chelsea – scored 64 goals in 95 appearances, averaging one every 122 minutes.

Vlahovic is a similarly physically imposing presence and one that clearly has an impressive eye for goal, too, having already scored ten times in 13 games this campaign, adding to his 21 goals during the 2020/21 campaign.

He would be a considerable investment in the region of £50m but given the system that Conte is likely to play, it would be a wise decision for Paratici to bolster the squad with another frontman. And the Fiorentina star should sit atop their list, that’s for sure.

The 21-year-old has been dubbed a “complete number nine” by Serie A expert Conor Clancy, whilst he has been likened to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and has been said to be ‘up there’ with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in terms of young attacking talent in Europe.

Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, the Belgrad-born talisman could well be Conte’s next Lukaku, playing alongside Harry Kane in the English top-flight. After all, he deployed the Belgian next to Lautaro Martinez, so there’s certainly room for two prolific marksmen in N17.

Also dubbed a “machine” by scout Jacek Kulig, Vlahovic would be a massive coup for Conte’s Spurs. They must look to sign his key target at all costs this winter.

Pakistan wrest back initiative with all-round show

Fawad Alam, Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal fashioned an extraordinary turnaround on the second day at the P Sara Oval, as Pakistan dominated as completely as they had been dominated on the opening day

Fawad Alam, Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal fashioned an extraordinary turnaround on the second day at the P Sara Oval, with Pakistan dominating as completely as they had been dominated on the opening day. Led by superb spells from Gul and an outstanding century on debut from Fawad, Pakistan recovered from a disastrous first innings, limited their deficit to 150, and, by the end of the day two, had wiped off the arrears and moved ahead, losing only one wicket in the process. When the day began, Sri Lanka were so far ahead it seemed almost inevitable they would rectify their record of never having won a home series against Pakistan. However, so thoroughly did Pakistan control all three sessions that Sri Lanka will have uncomfortable thoughts about chasing a stiff fourth-innings target on a wearing pitch. So far Pakistan had set all the wrong records in this series, but they got it right here: Fawad’s tenacious yet fluent effort made him the 10th Pakistan batsman to score a century on debut, but the first to do so overseas. Thanks to that effort and the amazing bowling display, Pakistan can dream about chasing another record: only once have they won a Test after conceding a larger first-innings deficit – against New Zealand in Wellington in 2003, when they trailed by 170 but eventually won by seven wickets. There were question marks being raised about Pakistan’s commitment after there capitulation in the series so far, but as is their wont, they hit back just when their chances had been written off. The pitch remained a pretty good one for batting, though the bounce had diminished, butPakistan relied on lethal spells of reverse swing, aided by steady spin and an inspirational bit of fielding, to launch an astonishing revival, and then continued it with an utterly disciplined and purposeful batting display. The morning session belonged to Gul. He was completely lacklustre in Galle, but here was back near his best, reverting to his original action instead of trying to hide the ball with both hands. He generated late swing, bowled at a brisk pace, and maintained excellent control overlength and line. He also bowled the ball that announced Pakistan’s comeback, slipping in a quick delivery from round the wicket that crashed through Kumar Sangakkara’s defences. Sangakkara had progressed serenely to 87 and looked good for many more, but that delivery was an emphatic declaration of the fact that Pakistan were back in business. That’s exactly how it turned out, as Sri Lanka lost five wickets after that for just 52.Gul received plenty of support from Ajmal, who bowled unchanged through the day and finished with deserving figures of 4 for 87. The pitch didn’t offer much, but Ajmal maintained excellent control, seldom giving the batsmen easy scoring opportunities. He also had some help from umpire Daryl Harper, who adjudged Tillakaratne Dilshan caught behind though ball made no contact with bat.It was a day when almost everything went right for Pakistan, with even the fielding getting better. The day started with a superb direct throw from Mohammad Aamer that found Thilan Samaraweera short of his crease. And when Gul returned for a second spell before lunch, Sri Lanka’s misery exacerbated, as he struck twice in successive balls. Nuwan Kulasekara drove hard to slip, while Rangana Herath was caught-and-bowled as he tried to check a drive, thus improving Gul’s morning figures to 3 for 15 from eight overs.Angelo Mathews offered some resistance after being reprieved in the slips on 4, but that was hardly enough to stop the rampaging Pakistanis. With the deficit controlled to manageable proportions, their batsmen then set about making further inroads into Sri Lanka’s hold on the game.Khurram Manzoor and Fawad did that by adding 85 for the first wicket, looking untroubled at most times on a pitch that had lost most of its pace. Kulasekara, the first-innings destroyer, didn’t get much swing, while the lack of pace meant both batsmen had enough time to adjust theirstrokes.Fawad’s tendency to shuffle had been his downfall in the first innings, and while he continued to use that technique in the second innings, he was quick enough to work the ball on the leg side every time the bowlers targeted his pads. The most impressive aspect of his batting, though, was his temperament. He was assured in defence, never looked flustered or bogged down by the huge deficit, and worked the ball away impressively against both pace and spin. Nothing demonstrated his temperament better than the way he tackled the 90s – on 92, he stepped back and pulled Rangana Herath high over midwicket for six; then he stepped back and worked the ball behind point for a couple of runs to get to his century. It contained only six fours and a six, but yet came off just 151 balls, indicating just how well he worked the ball around. His staple run-scoring was the arc between backward point and mid-off, as he drove the ball fluently off both front and back foot, picking the gaps and ensuring thatthere were never long scoreless periods.Younis had a close shave for lbw when on 4 – replays showed the ball had hit pad before hitting bat – but he slowly got into his groove, timing the ball sweetly down the ground and giving the bowlers no chance. By the time the last ball of the day was bowled, the Sri Lankans were more than ready to walk off, and the hopes of a series win was suddenly much farther away than it had been eight hours earlier.
