Celtic: Hutton reacts to Griffiths exit

Football Insider pundit Alan Hutton has been having his say on Leigh Griffiths’ deadline day exit from Celtic Park.

The Lowdown: Dundee move

The Hoops were extremely busy in the final hours of the summer window, with three incomings and three outgoings going through.

One of those departures was Griffiths, who, after signing a new one-year deal at Parkhead earlier in the summer, left to join Dundee on loan.

Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie also left, while Georgios Giakoumakis, Filipe Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers arrived at the club.

However, it was Griffiths’ departure that had former SPL right-back Hutton baffled.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Hutton was talking to Football Insider about Griffiths’ move on deadline day.

The 36-year-old described it as ‘very interesting’ and backed the Celtic big earner to thrive at Dundee under James McPake.

“It’s interesting. I think the whole situation surrounding Leigh is very interesting.

“We know he had his issues last season. He has been in and out. He signs a new one-year deal and then is nowhere to be seen.

“What’s going on in the background? This boy needs to play football. When match fit and playing week in, week out, he will score you goals. It’s as simple as that.

“He’s a goalscorer but he wasn’t getting the opportunity at Celtic. Whatever the reason might be, we don’t know.

“It’s a club he knows well, he’s been at Dundee before, familiar surroundings. Obviously, James McPake, the manager, has got the confidence of him coming in and scoring goals.

“He needs to play football. He’s at an age now where he doesn’t want all this nonsense behind him affecting his game.

“He just wants to play and score goals. I think this is a move which can help him do that.”

The Verdict: The right decision

It was strange that the 31-year-old signed new terms under Ange Postecoglou and departed without kicking a competitive ball this season, but it is for the best.

Postecoglou has Kyogo Furuhashi, Albian Ajeti, Giakoumakis, Jota and Liel Abada as attacking options and appears to be building for the future with youngsters Karamoko Dembele and Mikey Johnston in the squad.

Griffiths obviously wasn’t in his plans going forward as he didn’t feature, so moving him on to Dundee was the right call.

You’d expect there’s every chance that we have seen Griffiths in a Celtic shirt for the final time with his deal up in the summer, but it will be interesting to see how he gets on at Dens Park.

In other news: Another Celtic summer signing, as well as Urhoghide, isn’t impressing under Ange, says Devlin.

Bengal primed for second straight win

A round-up for the second day’s play of the fourth-round matches of the Ranji Trophy Plate League

Cricinfo staff30-Nov-2008
Scorecard
Bengal appear set for their second straight victory in Group B. They took a first-innings lead of 219, thanks to Manoj Tiwary’s century, and had taken half of Tripura’s second-innings wickets by stumps.Tiwary and Arindam Ghosh resumed at 138 for 2, and added 13 before Ghosh fell on 50. Tiwary went on from 82 to 109 before he was trapped lbw by offspinner Jayanta Debnath. A partnership between Laxmi Shukla (48) and Wriddhiman Saha (26) followed, but quick wickets reduced Bengal to 264 for 8. Ritam Kundu pushed Bengal passed 300 with an unbeaten 30. Left-arm spinner Tushar Saha and Debnath shared six wickets – all of Saha’s were lbws.Ranadeb Bose, who took five in the first innings, then struck twice as Tripura slumped to 34 for 4. Nishit Shetty, the top scorer in Tripura’s first innings, once again held fort. He put on 71 with Abhijit Dey (37), who was dismissed late in the day by Kundu.Tiwary, who scored his sixth Ranji was delighted with his effort. “Yeah, I am happy,” he said. “The confidence for a good innings was always there but I was missing the touch. Now it’s in my grasp. I hope to carry this on.””I was upset after I failed to achieve my targets. But I was trying. I worked hard and was knocking the ball well in the nets and knew that the form will surely be back soon.”
Scorecard
The runs did not flow as easily on the second day as they had on the first in Ranchi. Himachal Pradesh, resuming on 387 for 1, added 164 in 61 overs – a rate far less than their four an over on the first day. They declared on 551 for 8, and Jharkhand reduced the deficit by 60, losing one wicket in the process, in their 26.2 overs.Sangram Singh and Bhavin Thakkar didn’t add much to the overnight scores, and it was left to Mukesh Sharma and Ajay Mannu to take them past 500. Jharkhand lost Subroto Ghosh in the first over of their innings, but Manish Vardhan and Ishank Jaggi batted cautiously to ensure there were no further hiccups.
Scorecard
Jitender Tarsemlal Billa’s five-wicket haul gave Haryana a handy first-innings lead in their Group A match in Rohtak. Goa quickly wrapped up Haryana’s first innings, taking the final three wickets in five overs, but conceded a substantial first-innings lead after their top order imploded.Saurabh Bandekar took the final two wickets – completing a five-for – as Haryana added only 12 to their overnight 275, but three strikes from Billa seized back the advantage. Billa struck on the first two deliveries of the innings, both leg-befores, and added a third in his next over. The first three wickets had fallen with no runs on board.Swapnil Asnodkar, the Goa captain and opener, led a recovery with wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra. The two added 98 before Billa struck again, removing Ratra for 51. Swapnil, who hit the limelight with his aggressive batting during the IPL, was far more patient during his 48. Rohit Asnodkar was even more so, scoring 21 off 112 balls. However, the other batsmen failed to push the scoring, and Goa eventually fell 97 runs short on the first innings.Goa coach, Dodda Ganesh, however, was optimistic of Goa turning it around on the third day. “In cricket, nothing can be predicted until the last ball is bowled. If we bowl them out early, we still can go for victory” he told the .
Scorecard
A tenth-wicket partnership of 123 helped Kerala gain a 115-run lead over Jammu & Kashmir at Fort Maidan in Palakkad. A slender lead looked on the cards for the visitors after they prised out wickets regularly – Kerala had resumed on 72 for 2 – but No. 5 Preambhastn Prem got support from Tinu Yohannan, who had taken a 5 for 43 on the opening day.Prem went on to score his second century of the tournament – he was unbeaten on 124 – while Yohannan made a stubborn 87-ball 32. The partnership lasted more than 30 overs, and was ended by Ahmed Nizam, who cleaned up the lower order during his spell of 14.5-1-47-4. Kerala then bagged one wicket in Jammu & Kashmir’s second innings; the visitors scored 26 in ten overs.Services 107 for 5 (Golwalkar 3-21) trail Madhya Pradesh 223 (Dholpure 59, Pitre 46, Nadkarni 3-30, Rakesh Kumar 3-53) by 116 runs
Scorecard
It is going to be a close battle between Group B leaders Madhya Pradesh and bottom-placed Services for the first-innings lead in Delhi. Madhya Pradesh, whose lower-order’s efforts had boosted them to 196 for 9 after a poor start on the first day, closed their innings on 223. Shantanu Pitre added ten to his overnight 36, while No. 11 Yogesh Golwalkar was unbeaten on 29 not out.Golwalkar then struck vital blows with the ball. His three strikes saw Services slip to 79 for 5, Sunil Dholpure and Shantanu Pitre took the other wickets. However, Sarabjit Singh and Abhimanyu Singh took Services to 107 at stumps without further loss; they need 117 more to gain the first-innings lead.Scorecard
Gaining the first-innings lead will also be Vidarbha’s primary goal in Nagpur. Assam, resuming at 183 for 4, were kept to 299. Vidarbha lost two wickets cheaply in reply, but they moved to a more comfortable 114 for 3 by stumps.Vidarbha’s Mohammad Hashim dismissed Jacob Martin, resuming on 77, early on the second day, but Sarupam Purkayastha took charge of the innings. He added 51 with Mrigen Talukdar (18) before falling for 51. No. 9 Arnald Konwar made 26 to boost the team’s total. For Vidarbha, opener Madhusudan Acharya made 33, while Ranjit Paradkar and Shalabh Shrivastava were unbeaten on 38 and 24 at close.

Wolves fans on Lage comments

Lots of Wolves fans have been left raging as some comments emerged from Bruno Lage.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of his team’s match away at Watford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, the Portuguese manager said (via Liam Keen) that the Midlands club need to find the best ‘solutions’ when it comes to their squad size.

‘Solutions’ is was a word that former boss Nuno Espirito Santo, now at Tottenham Hotspur, used to say a lot when speaking to the media, and so obvious comparisons have now been drawn from sections of the fan base.

Nuno’s last season at Molineux was a disappointing one to say the least, as his side ended up finishing in 13th place in top-flight table, and so WWFC supporters do not want to see a repeat of that with their new coach.

– Eu me senti bem melhor.

Nesta quarta-feira, o Sport decide o Campeonato Pernambucano contra o Salgueiro, nesta quarta-feira. A princípio, Diego Souza deve jogar. O Palmeiras, enquanto isto, tem pressa. O clube precisa entregar no máximo na segunda-feira a lista de inscritos para as oitavas de final da Libertadores, com até seis alterações.

Oram under new injury cloud

Jacob Oram, the New Zealand allrounder, is under another injury cloud after suffering an Achilles tendon problem during the defeat to West Indies in the second one-day international in Christchurch. It has been another injury-hit season for Oram, who flew home from the Test tour of Australia with a back problem and then succumbed to a calf injury as he prepared for the series against West Indies. Andy Moles, the New Zealand coach, believes the latest setback could be linked to the previous calf problem.”The calf is fine. It’s now just a case of finding out the extent of the referred pain he has in his Achilles tendon,” he told . “It’s a lot better this morning than it was last night but we just need to make sure it’s nothing serious. We’ll know that information once the medical people look at him.”Oram was one of eight New Zealand players due to turn out for their states on Monday in a bid to spend some time in the middle. The decision to release players for domestic duty was made when it appeared the second ODI was heading for washout, following the abandonment of the opening game in Queenstown.Even though a 28-over contest was possible – which West Indies won with two balls to spare – Moles knows his batsmen are short of time in the middle as they look to level the series in Wellington on Wednesday.”We’ve practised really well but there’s no substitute for working in the middle,” he said. “We spoke to the selectors and the players and the really pleasing thing was that the players were keen to go and play.”While Moles has a few selection issues to resolve because of form and injury, his opposite number John Dyson is hoping to have Shivnarine Chanderpaul back for the next match. Chanderpaul has missed the opening two games after soreness in his left hand but is making good progress.”It’s getting better. Hopefully by tomorrow morning when we go back into the nets he will be back in the nets and batting as he usually does for hours,” Dyson said.Dyson, though, was full of praise for how Ramnaresh Sarwan and Denesh Ramdin paced the run chase in Christchurch after the game appeared to be slipping away.”I thought they played extremely well. Sarwan played a controlled innings and it was important that he was there at the finish,” he said. “Ramdin came in and just gave us that little bit of punch that we needed to finish the game off.”

James McCarthy ‘ready to go’ for Livingston

Celtic midfielder James McCarthy is ‘ready to go’ against Livingston on Sunday afternoon, John McGinley reports.

The Lowdown: McCarthy’s struggles

The 30-year-old, who penned a four-year deal at Parkhead in the summer, hasn’t featured heavily under Ange Postecoglou this season. He has made just four appearances in green and white, all of which have come from the bench.

He has reportedly ‘struggled’ with the ‘with the pace and intensity’ of Postecoglou’s training sessions, but it appears as if he is good to go against Livingston today.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-13/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: McGinley’s tweet

McGinley took to Twitter on Saturday evening to share updates on McCarthy and Celtic team-mate Giorgos Giakoumakis.

He claimed that the Irish midfielder is ‘ready to go’, while the Greece striker also has a chance of making his first appearance as a Celtic player, tweeting: “Postecoglou says Giorgos Giakoumakis has a chance of featuring tomorrow against Livingston, if he doesn’t, he will definitely be involved against Raith Rovers. James McCarthy is ready to go.”

The Verdict: Boost

With Callum McGregor missing the game with Real Betis through injury on Thursday, McCarthy’s availability from the off today is a welcome boost for Postecoglou.

Postecoglou is optimistic that the captain may make a swift return, but having McCarthy as another option is good news.

The Irishman has reportedly been sidelined through a viral infection, but hopefully he can begin to find his feet in the Hoops midfield – possibly starting from today.

Fiery Harwood sets up big win for Victoria

Callum Ferguson made a well-timed 89 two days before his likely ODI debut but his South Australia side went down to Victoria by six wickets at the MCG

Callum Ferguson made a well-timed 89 two days before his likely ODI debut but his South Australia side went down to Victoria by six wickets at the MCG. Andrew McDonald, who is hoping for a spot on the Test tour of South Africa, guided Victoria home after Shane Harwood’s four wickets restricted the Redbacks to 200.The Bushrangers earned a bonus point after securing the victory in the 38th over and it all but confirmed a spot in the FR Cup final. The only positive for South Australia in the second innings was the 3 for 34 picked up the fast bowler Jake Haberfield in his third game.He found some swing and it was especially useful against the left-handers Rob Quiney and Chris Rogers, who were bowled and lbw from deliveries that moved back in. Cameron White made 33 after being left out of Australia’s past couple of ODIs but the key was McDonald, whose unbeaten 55 made the victory a certainty.McDonald likes to bat at his natural pace and a small target meant he could work the ball into the gaps and he timed his drives superbly. Things picked up in the finish when he was joined by Aaron Finch, who ended up on 25 and brought up the win with a six slammed over midwicket off Haberfield. However, the real star for Victoria was the Man of the Match Harwood, whose outstanding new-ball spell reduced the Redbacks to 4 for 32 and it was effectively five-down as Tom Cooper had retired hurt after being thumped on the back of the head by a Harwood bouncer. It was such a severe blow that scans revealed a small fracture to the back of Cooper’s skull and he will consult a specialist in Adelaide on Thursday.Harwood had Michael Klinger and Daniel Harris caught when they failed to get on top of his quick, short deliveries, and Graham Manou was brilliantly caught and bowled when Harwood dived forward to collect a leading edge with one hand. Harwood returned to collect Ferguson, who picked the gaps and was cool and calm ahead of Friday’s one-day international at the same venue, where he should debut against New Zealand.
