Zimbabwe should avoid another banana skin

Martin Williamson previews the tri-series in Nairobi

Martin Williamson17-Oct-2008It’s almost three years since a Full-Member country visited Nairobi for an ODI, and since the 2003 World Cup, four ODIs against Bangladesh is the best Kenyan cricket has been able to offer its small number of home supporters. It has not been through want of trying. Initially, the gross mismanagement of the board deterred visiting sides, and more recently the political uncertainty has hampered the tireless efforts of Cricket Kenya to tempt countries to tour. A few A-teams have popped in, but the main action has been with other Associates. The Ireland tour has been on the cards for some time, but it appeared set to be another bilateral series until Zimbabwe finally bowed to pressure from on high and agreed to make it a threesome. Since they were held 2-2 at home by Kenya in 2006, Zimbabwe have been sidestepping a return series, fearing the consequences of defeat by an Associate. The chances of that, very real a couple of years ago, have now reduced considerably. Zimbabwe, with a continuing erosion of their player base, are no better than they were, but the two Associates they face certainly have certainly gone in reverse of late.Kenya are at the crossroads. For more years that is healthy, they have been propped up by the same old faces, and that is no longer a viable option. There is new talent coming through – Seren Waters had a cracking debut last weekend – but the pool of talent is shallow, a legacy of the lack of investment of the previous regime. The new board is having to rebuild the development structure, and the rewards of that will not be felt for several years. For the time behind, Kenya are in virtual freefall, and so serious have things become that there is a real fear that they will struggle to qualify for the 2011 World Cup.Ireland’s problems are less deep rooted, centring more on availability rather than a lack of talent. The pressures of an increasingly hectic schedule on a largely amateur side has taken its toll, with several of the victorious 2007 World Cup squad absent. They also struggle to keep players from throwing in their lot with England, and a batting line-up which could include Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan would be a daunting prospect. Despite that, they are probably now the leading Associate, a mantle which for many years was Kenya’s. Last weekend’s innings defeat of the Kenyans in Nairobi underlined their credentials.Zimbabwe’s woes are well documented, and the absence of Brendan Taylor, who is believed to be in Australia after one fall-out too many with the board, is a major blow. They have plenty of young cricketers but they are woefully inexperienced and the poor facilities at home, together with the lack of coaches, means their opportunities to improve are limited.Zimbabwe should still be good enough to win the tri-series, and with the ICC still pouring millions into the murkiness that is the country’s cricketing structure, so they should. But Ireland, who are ranked above them by the ICC, may well have what it takes to bloody their noses, as Canada, a much weaker side, did last week in Toronto. For locals, they can but hope that Kenya’s long run of dismal performances when it really matters doesn’t continue in front of their own fans.

West Ham fans delighted with Kral signing

A number of West Ham supporters are delighted that the Hammers are closing in on the loan signing of Spartak Moscow midfielder Alex Kral.

It has been an ideal start to the season for David Moyes’ side, who have picked up seven points from their opening three Premier League games.

Wins over Newcastle United and Leicester City were followed by Saturday’s draw with Crystal Palace, with some impressive football being played along the way.

It has been a hugely productive couple of days for the Hammers, with Nikola Vlasic signing from CSKA Moscow, adding even more quality in attacking areas, while Kurt Zouma arrived over the weekend.

Not only that, but a move for Kral is ‘90% done’ [via journalist Jason Burt on Twitter], with the defensive midfielder a promising 23-year-old with 22 caps to his name for the Czech Republic.

Fábio Santos, duas vezes, e Guerrero marcaram a favor do Timão.

Matthews endured tough August for Charlton

Despite a strong end to the month of August with a 2-0 win over Crewe Alexandra, it was a dreadful opening few weeks of the season for Charlton.

The Addicks sit in the bottom half of the table after managing just four points from their first five League One games of the 2021/22 campaign.

Nigel Adkins’ side were held to a 0-0 draw by Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day but failed to build on that point and clean sheet as they then lost their next three matches to Oxford, MK Dons and Wigan.

Whilst many players underperformed, one in particular endured a disastrous August – Adam Matthews.

The former Sunderland defender averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.72, which places him 12th overall in the Charlton squad, despite him playing every single minute of League One action in August. This means that he did not break into Charlton’s best 11 players last month even though he played all five games, suggesting that he was one of the most consistently disappointing performers.

As per SofaScore, Matthews gave away possession a whopping 52 times in five games (10.4 times per match) for the Addicks. This shows that he was not a reliable outlet for Adkins’ side down the right as he constantly gifted the ball back to the opposition with his sloppy play.

He did not make up for his poor play on the ball with his defensive work, either. As per SofaScore, Matthews only won 13 duels in five games, winning 58% of his ground duels and 40% of his aerial battles. Whilst winning the majority of his contests on the ground is a positive for Matthews, the fact that he only won 2.2 per game suggests that he was not getting involved enough defensively.

The experienced defender only made a combined one tackle and interception per game in League One, failing to win possession back for his team in any match. This could suggest that he was often caught out positionally, as he was not in the right place at the right time to make crucial challenges to prevent goals.

Matthews endured a terrible month in August as he struggled on the ball and defensively while Charlton also faltered as a team. Hopefully the defender, and indeed the rest of the squad, will see more positive results come their way in the upcoming weeks and months of the season.

AND in other news, 17 tackles won: Charlton beast with 175 touches was an unsung hero for Adkins in August…

England hope to heal wounds

Cricinfo previews the second one-day international between India and England in Indore on November 16, 2008

The Preview by George Binoy16-Nov-2008Match factsNov 17, 2008

Big PictureUnless England arrest their alarming slide, which began in Antigua, continued in Mumbai, and plunged to new depths in Rajkot, they are in danger of being steamrolled by Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s clinical outfit. The positive for England is that, after the 158-run loss in the first one-dayer, it will be relatively easier for them to improve, while India will be challenged to reproduce a performance as devastating as the one in Rajkot.Touring sides face several tests in India. The common ones are difficulties in adjusting to the climate, the environment outside hotels, and the playing conditions – several Australian cricketers, for instance, were ill during the recent Test series. However, the biggest challenge is overcoming a formidable opponent in conditions tailored to its style of play. Indian batsmen have always flourished at home but recently their fast bowlers have become more effective on flat pitches by learning to reverse-swing the ball. Fielding used to be a weakness, but the average age of this squad is 24 and they are fleet-footed, safe, and accurate.England’s limited-overs form was excellent before the three massive defeats. They beat South Africa 4-0 at home and their coach Peter Moores said they needed to play the same quality of cricket in different conditions in India. Their bowlers in particular need to find the right length quickly, especially against an opening pair that will attack from the outset. Ground once ceded is hard to regain. England bat deep – Stuart Broad is at No 9 – but there is little their batsmen can do if they have to chase 300-plus totals on a regular basis.Form guide (last 5 ODIs, most recent last)India WNWLW
England WWWNLWatch out forIndia’s opening partnership: The Rajkot match will be remembered for Yuvraj Singh’s astonishing strokeplay but the foundation for India’s victory was laid by their openers. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were in excellent form during the Tests against Australia and they carried it into the first one-dayer. Both openers scored half-centuries and added 127 in 19.5 overs: a partnership full of big hits and terrific running between the wickets.England’s big two, Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen. Flintoff finished with 1 for 67 in Rajkot but he had figures of 1 for 34 off eight overs before he was battered by Yuvraj. Flintoff was the only bowler to exercise control over the run-rate during the first half of the Indian innings. Although the contest had been decided by the time Pietersen began his innings, he was in excellent touch during his 63, off 56 balls, and particularly severe on India’s spinners, scoring 43 off 29 balls against them. The batting team’s Powerplay: Dhoni and Collingwood both felt that the new playing condition, under which the batting team could choose when to take a Powerplay, made one-day cricket more interesting. The tendency has been to take it around the 34th over, when the mandatory ball change happens. England took it in the 34th and scored 56, while India took it in the 35th and managed 41.Team newsThere was uncertainty on Sunday over the fitness of two Indian players – Ishant Sharma and Yuvraj. Ishant injured his ankle during the Test series against Australia and missed the first ODI in Rajkot. Mahendra Singh Dhoni said the fast bowler would almost certainly miss Monday’s game because it would give him a period of five to seven days to recover. Yuvraj had trouble with his back during his century in Rajkot and, although a local doctor said there was no internal injury, his fitness will be assessed on the morning of the game. If Yuvraj is unavailable, Virat Kohli is likely to be his replacement.India (probable): 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 RP Singh, 11 Munaf Patel.Collingwood said Ryan Sidebottom, the left-arm medium-pacer, was “fully fit to play” after he missed the first game with an Achilles tendon problem. If England pick Sidebottom, he will probably replace James Anderson, who took the new ball in Rajkot and conceded 52 in eight overs without a wicket.England (probable): 1 Matt Prior (wk), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Owais Shah, 4 Kevin Pietersen (capt), 5 Andrew Flintoff, 6 Paul Collingwood, 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Samit Patel, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 Steve Harmison.Pitch and conditionsDhoni and Pietersen both wanted to bowl first in Rajkot and the Indian captain said losing the toss was a blessing. However, he indicated that batting first would be the way to go in Indore. “The wicket will not be like the one at Rajkot,” Dhoni said. “There will be wear and tear as the match progresses. It’s dry and it will become slow and it will be difficult to score.” Collingwood agreed, saying the pitch was flat and had some cracks and the boundaries were small. The curator, Samundar Singh Chauhan, however, was felt the toss wouldn’t be that significant. “You can see a score in excess of 300 being scored and maybe even being chased. The wicket is hard and will last 100 overs.”Stats & Trivia The India-England match in 2006 is the only one-dayer to have been played at the Maharani Usharaje Trust Cricket Ground. England set a target of 289 and India’s top four batsmen scored half-centuries to complete the run-chase with five balls to spare. Dhoni averages 54.20 as captain in ODIs, ten runs more than his average when he wasn’t leading the team. Pietersen’s corresponding stats are 51 and 48. Flintoff’s 34 wickets in 26 ODIs are the most for any England bowler against India.Yuvraj has scored 942 runs in 24 matches against England at an average of 52. His career average is 37.England scored only 63 runs during the first two Powerplays in Rajkot while India’s openers added 90 during the same period.Quotes”We just have to stop them. We need to be more aggressive. We want to hit India hard. The key is to take early wickets and put them under pressure. India is very much like any other team.”
“We are always wary of becoming complacent because we will be criticised for being overconfident if we lose. We are always focused on what needs to be done.”

Lewis stands down as Gloucestershire captain

Jon Lewis has stepped down as Gloucestershire captain after three years in charge

Cricinfo staff06-Nov-2008Jon Lewis has stepped down as Gloucestershire captain after three years in charge. It is the latest change at the club ahead of next season which will see John Bracewell return as coach. In 2008 Gloucestershire finished bottom of Division Two in the County Championship without a victory and, in recent seasons, haven’t been able to rekindle the one-day form which made them such a force earlier in the decade.”I have been extremely proud to have been captain of Gloucestershire over the past three seasons,” Lewis said. “I would like to thank the supporters for their commitment to me and the team.”I have given my all to the cause and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge but feel the time is right for a fresh start. I look forward to focusing on improving my game so that I can play my best cricket for Gloucestershire.”Tom Richardson, the chief executive, was grateful for all the work Lewis has put in on and off the field. “This year, in particular, he has taken on significantly more responsibility and we are extremely grateful to him,” he said. “As an experienced senior player and international cricketer he still has a great deal to offer both on and off the field.”
