India and Zimbabwe ready for crucial 'Pool of Death' tie

It is the cricketing equivalent of the soccer World Cup’s Group of Death

Anand Vasu13-Sep-2002It is the cricketing equivalent of the soccer World Cup’s Group of Death. Pool Two sees India, Zimbabwe and England slog it out for a semi-final berth, and the action heats up for this group on Saturday as India and Zimbabwe attempt to set the turf on fire at the Premadasa stadium. On the opening day of the ICC Champions Trophy, Pakistan succumbed to Sri Lanka’s all-round show, and a confident India would not want to suffer a similar fate. Zimbabwe, with all the turmoil back home, could probably also do with the therapy a win affords. Heath Streak, a beleaguered skipper if there ever was one, has said more than once that he just wanted to focus on the game. Whether Zimbabwe can be clear-headed, let alone reach that elusive “zone” sportsmen constantly refer to in the heat of battle, remains to be seen. The Zimbabwe-India encounter, however, is clearly one where the form book means little. The men from Africa have the talent – the Flower brothers, Streak, Travis Friend and Ray Price with the ball – to shock the best in the world on their day. It goes without saying that India is the sort of team that can completely lose the plot from time to time, and Zimbabwe would do well to remember that their opponents have even lost to Kenya in their one-day past.On his part, Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly refused to underestimate Zimbabwe. “They are no pushovers. They are a very good one-day side, and we’ll have to play well to beat them,” said the skipper.Interestingly enough, these two teams have seen plenty of each other in recent times; in fact, for one particular stretch, they played each other in three Test series over the course of little more than a year. Zimbabwe did fare handily enough in a recent one-day series in India, leading 2-1 before losing 3-2. Ganguly explained that away saying, “We were a much-depleted side when we last played Zimbabwe at home. We had four or five of our players injured. We’re a full-strength side now.”For India, the past year has been an extremely successful one in the shorter version of the game. As Ganguly reminded gathered press personnel at Colombo, “We’re a much improved side. Over the last one and a half years, we’ve played really good cricket. We’re still so close and yet so far from winning a Test series overseas, but our one-day performances have been very good. We’ve won 80 percent of our one-day tournaments in the last year or so.”India’s recent successes have been made possible largely by virtue of some clever team composition. Whether it was coach John Wright or Ganguly who decided that Rahul Dravid must keep wicket in order to let the think-tank pick an extra batsman, we don’t know. But it has worked, and Dravid has fitted the role of a one-day cricketer more since he donned the gloves. Some say the fact that Dravid contributes behinds the stumps reduces the pressure when he bats. Others argue that the sheer mental and physical strain of doing both jobs is too much for Dravid. But if you ask the man himself, he sits somewhere between the two extremes.”As long as doing both can produce results, it’s fine,” said Dravid. “Initially I felt a bit worried about whether I’d be able to do the job or not, but as the results came in it got easier. We’ve won a lot of games where I’ve kept, and the confidence has come from that. It makes you feel good when you win the game. The debate will go on for a long time about whether it is the right move or not, but that’s not important. If the results are good, you don’t have to worry about what sort of combination you have.”That is of course true. In Indian cricket, everyone loves a winner, and you can get away with murder as long as you are winning. But one must view this ploy with a touch of skepticism if India have even stopped looking for a specialist keeper for the long run. Dravid is a keen student of the game and will do his best, one can be sure of that. “I admit it’s going to be a challenge keeping to the spinners in these conditions. I don’t claim to be a regular wicket-keeper who can do amazing things. All I can say is that I’m going out and giving it my best and working pretty hard at it too. Keeping the World Cup in mind, it will be a learning curve for me.”India may be looking to the World Cup already, but their opponents train their eyes on matters close at hand. “We are underdogs against both sides as per usual. England are playing well at the moment and still have the basis of a good side, despite their injuries, and India are a formidable side and a really difficult proposition,” said Andy Flower. The man who has made runs by the bucketful against India also warned that Zimbabwe’s bowling attack – medium-pace, as well as the spin of Grant Flower, Douglas Marillier and Ray Price – could be a handful in these conditions. The wicket at the Premadasa stadium is slow and has enough in it for the spinners, so few will be surprised if there is little of the slam-bang sort of cricket the subcontinent is so famous for. It might be a case where, to borrow one of Nasser Hussain’s favourite phrases, “turgid cricket” rules.

Celtic: Nir Bitton lets Hoops down again

You can hire a new manager at Celtic, but until things change above Ange Postecoglou in the hierarchy, circumstances will never change.

This has been a nightmare start to the Hoops’ campaign, being dumped out of Champions League qualifying in midweek and then tasting defeat in their opening Premiership clash.

It was evident that Celtic came into their match with Hearts with a lack of bodies but that isn’t the new manager’s fault. He has been intent on persuading those in the boardroom to sign more players.

The defence has always been their problem and, even if Carl Starfelt earned his debut this weekend, it didn’t really help the Bhoys. He had a nervy moment in the second half with a backpass but his colleague Nir Bitton was even worse at the heart of the defence.

Celtic went 1-0 down early on but fought back in the second half courtesy of an extremely rare goal from Anthony Ralston. However, Postecoglou’s men slipped up late on to lose a point after John Souttar’s excellent header.

Scott Bain has taken his fair share of criticism over the last 12 months and he was caught in no man’s land for Souttar’s last-gasp goal.

He was seen heading towards the back post, but if Bitton’s marking and ability to pick up the Hearts defender had been spot on, the goalkeeper wouldn’t have been caught out. Instead, his error was costly as they lost on the opening day of the new season.

The Israeli was poor in European qualification too, being sent off against Midtjylland in the first leg and described as a “walking joke” in the process.

The centre-back did himself no favours with this performance either, appearing lightweight in physical situations. Bitton was only involved in two defensive duels, winning just one of them, while he missed the crucial delivery which led to a Hearts winner.

Celtic’s defensive calamity made only one block and was dribbled past on one occasion. Those aren’t the worst numbers by any stretch of the imagination but, on a night where Postecoglou dropped Welsh, the youngster’s replacement did not deliver.

It was a strange decision from the Aussie to field Bitton, and after his mishap on Saturday evening, it would be a surprise if the manager made the same mistake twice. After all, he will have been left seething with the 29-year-old.

That said, this is Celtic Football Club; disaster appears to follow them regularly at the moment.

AND in other news, Forget Hjelde: Ange already has Celtic’s next Ajer in “fantastic” rarely-seen 18 y/o…

Kent add to Surrey's woes

A round-up from the latest Twenty20 Cup matches

The presence of the Prince of Wales was not enough to inspire Surrey to victory as they slid to their second defeat in three days at a packed Oval, a 13-run loss to Kent. Joe Denly (52) and Robert Key (42) gave the visitors a superb start, passing 50 in the sixth over and eventually adding 81 for the first wicket. Justin Kemp maintained the rate with three sixes in his 16-ball 30 before holing out to long-on. Darren Stevens thumped two sixes and a four in the final over as Kent reached 181 for 7. Surrey took 17 from the first over but thereafter steadily fell behind as wickets tumbled and 25 off the final over proved way too much.Sussex, who were among the pre-tournament favourites, fell to their second loss as Hampshire beat them by six wickets off the last ball at Hove. Murray Goodwin (69) set Sussex on their way and then Dwayne Smith launched a remarkable onslaught with six sixes in a 27-ball unbeaten 72. A total of 204 for 6 appeared more than enough but Michael Carberry (58) led Hampshire’s perfectly-timed chase.Durham made it two wins in two with a six-wicket win over Leicestershire in front of 3000 on a slow-paced pitch at Grace Road. It was very much a South African affair as Morne Morkel took 4 for 30 and Shaun Pollock 2 for 15 to limit Leicestershire to 142 for 8, Boeta Dippenaar top scoring with 47. Durham recovered from an early wobble to ease home with two overs to spare, Dale Benkenstein (48*) and the oddly English Will Smith (40) seeing them through, although it was a six from Morkel that completed the victory. The night’s drubbing came at Derby where Lancashire romped to a ten-wicket win over Derbyshire under lights with four overs in hand. Sajid Mahmood (3 for 12) ripped the heart out of the Derbyshire innings with three quick wickets and, after a recovery of sorts, Gary Keedy (4 for 15) polished off the tail. A target of 112 was not challenging, and Mal Loye (54*) and Lou Vincent (50*) made the most of some lacklustre bowling to get in practice in the middle.Nottinghamshire beat a below-par Yorkshire by four wickets in a shortened 15-over-a-side game at Headingley. Nottinghamshire were given a boost by Will Jefferson and Samit Patel who added 60 in four overs, and when Anthony McGrath stepped up to bowl the final over there were five wanted; Adam Voges smashed the second ball over mid-wicket.There was no repeat of Graham Hick’s fireworks of 24 hours earlier as he failed to score in Worcestershire’s 33-run loss to Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. Andrew Hall’s 66 helped Northamptonshire to 182 for 4, but after reaching 98 for 2, Worcestershire lost their last eight wickets for 51 as the overs ran out with Hall taking 6 for 21, finishing affairs with three wickets in four balls. For the second time in three days Somerset squandered a good start as they slid to a 14-run loss by Glamorgan at Cardiff. Marcus Trecothick (38) and Justin Langer (62) guided them to 62 for 0 in pursuit of 171, but Robert Croft (3 for 12) choked the middle order as five wickets fell for 28.Click here for John Ward’s report from Gloucestershire’s tie with Warwickshire at Bristol

Pundit says Arsenal could come in for Jordan Pickford

Former Everton striker Marcus Bent has suggested that Jordan Pickford could solve Arsenal’s goalkeeping problems.

The Gunners made a huge mistake when they sold Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa last summer, with Mikel Arteta opting for German Bernd Leno as his number one, whilst the Argentine had a scintillating campaign at Villa Park.

But whilst Leno has proved himself as an outstanding shot-stopper, his ability with his feet has proved a major issue for an Arsenal side that liked to play out from the back under Arteta.

Arsenal have been linked with Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic said that he expects him to stay.

With that in mind, Bent hinted that the Gunners could be in for Pickford, who was one of the standout players at the European Championships, saving two penalties against Italy in the final.

And whilst Pickford is only halfway through his £100,000-a-week six-year contract, and would appear settled on Merseyside, when asked if he could attract interest from top-six sides following his heroics for England, Bent exclusively told Football FanCast:

“He’s a quality player. Who would sniff around? He’s played at the top. Arsenal maybe, but that means he needs to move to London.

“He did well in the Euros. He’s good where he is at the minute, but Pickford is an amazing player.”

Scottish first minister wants TV coverage of ODI

Alex Salmond, the Scottish first minister, has urged the BBC to reconsider its decision not to cover the first-ever ODI between Scotland and England at the Grange in August

Neil Drysdale22-Jun-2008Alex Salmond, the Scottish first minister, has urged the BBC to reconsider its decision not to cover the first-ever ODI between Scotland and England at the Grange in August.Salmond is a cricket fan and believes that the BBC does not do enough to cover sport outside major events such as rugby’s Six Nations Championships, football’s European Championships and Wimbledon. He said it was “hugely disappointing” that the BBC had chosen to snub the historic cricketing contest in Scotland on August 18, which is likely to feature stars such as Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and possibly Andrew Flintoff. It is, according to the Cricket Scotland chief executive, Roddy Smith “the biggest match we have ever staged” and is expected to draw a capacity crowd of 6000.Salmond will be there in person, but intends to raise the matter at Holyrood this week and has the support of Margo MacDonald, the chairperson of the parliament’s Cross-Party Sports group.”This is an important sporting event in Scotland and television and radio should be rising to the occasion,” said Salmond. “It would be hugely disappointing if it came and went without being broadcast and it should certainly be shown, given the widespread and growing interest in the game throughout Scotland.”MacDonald, who is the honorary patron of Edinburgh CC has already written to the BBC to express her dismay at the decision. Cricinfo has a copy of her letter, which spells out her belief that BBC Scotland should stop obsessing over football and provide a better service to licence payers.”Whilst appreciating the massive commitment to the Olympic Games, I still think that BBC Scotland has a duty to cover important sporting events in their own country,” said MacDonald. “This cricket match, I believe, could act as an effective catalyst in persuading youngsters in particular to engage in a sport in which Scotland is growing its own heroes and role models.”It seems strange, to say the least, that the BBC should not deem this one-day event worthy of coverage. This is a historic, ground-breaking occasion, and I intend to fight this decision.”The BBC has been widely criticised for its failure to cover the recent Scotland rugby tour of Argentina, where they beat the Pumas for the first time since 1990. Salmond and MacDonald have no intention of allowing the Corporation to show a similar lack of interest in the cricket.
