The Athletic first broke news of Pochettino’s talks with Tottenham a fortnight ago in what was a pretty seismic managerial development at N17.

Pochettino was said to be keen on a return to the English capital amid these discussions but current club PSG would fight tooth and nail to keep him (The Athletic).

As the Ligue 1 giants dug their heels in, Spurs turned to other targets with the clock ticking over a long-awaited heir to former boss Jose Mourinho.

The Latest: Glimmer of hope?

Now, French news outlet le10sport have come out with an encouraging claim involving Pochettino and one that could possibly reignite hope of his return to N17.

Indeed, they state that PSG have taken the foot off their originally firm stance on his exit and now ‘wouldn’t oppose’ his departure from the club.

This is apparently due to the availability of former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane who they see as a ‘dream’ successor to Pochettino.

It is also stated that PSG are ‘already in working’ on an offer for Zidane if the Argentine leaves for Spurs this summer with the Lilywhites maintaining an interest.

The Verdict: Promising claim…

As Spurs continue the hunt for their next manager, it is arguable that Pochettino is the perfect candidate – especially considering he already knows the club and fits into Levy’s managerial checklist. 

Former Lilywhites winger Andros Townsend, speaking to talkSPORT, lauded him as ‘one of the best managers, if not the best manager in the world’ – namely due to his fine job at Spurs over the five-year tenure.

Amid the financial strains brought upon clubs by coronavirus, with Spurs needing to adopt a sell-to-buy policy this summer, a boss like Pochettino is exactly who they need given his ability to work under limited resources.

The Pakistan off-spinner Shoaib Malik has been reported by the match referee for a suspect bowling action.The Zimbabwean match referee for the ARY Gold Cup tournament in Sharjah, Justice Ebrahim Ahmed, said in a brief but crisp statement after the final game: “The umpires have reported Shoaib Malik for suspect bowling action and after informing the Pakistan team management I’ll be sending the report to the International Cricket Council.”According to the ICC manual on suspect bowling actions, it is mandatory for the match referee to obtain video footage of the bowler’s action when it is suspected by the umpires of being illegal. The material must then be sent to the ICC.The ICC manual also makes it mandatory for the referee to send two video copies of the suspect bowlers along with his report to the home board, in this case the Pakistan Cricket Board.

وأضاف: “إذا قلت لا، فأنت ترفض إقامة البطولة في الشرق الأوسط كمنطقة يجب أن يكون لها الحق في استضافة كأس العالم، وهم لا يمكنهم استضافته في منتصف يونيو”.

وواصل: “بعيدًا عن قطر، الأمر يمثل قضية إقليمية، يجب أن يكون هناك عدل ونمنح كل منطقة في العالم إمكانية الوصول، وهو ما أعتقد أننا جميعًا نحبه”.

We were obviously disappointing in Sri Lanka. The boys came away from their disappointing one-day performance but it was a tough series to come up against Murali – everyone knows what a great bowler he is. It was hard work.It was a disappointing performance, and if you look at the whole team the guys will be disappointed with some of their performances, no doubt about that. I think everyone would be honest and say they would have liked to score more runs but it was tough. The wickets were turning square and Murali took 30 wickets in the series. But from the coach’s point of view the guys never stopped working and it was just one of those things.One pleasing thing for myself was that the boys worked very hard right to the end, fighting right to the last ball in a Test match. But we were up against a good team and we couldn’t quite get it right. Hopefully we can take the positives out of that tour and I hope all the players learnt from the experience so we can get to India in a good frame of mind and improve on our performance.There have been problems with the opening partnerships. We had Trevor Gripper and Stuart Carlisle making a record stand against Sri Lanka in the last Test and hopefully that partnership will blossom in India.It’s always important to get a good start. That’s the key. In Sri Lanka Andy Flower was always coming in with the score at 20 or 30 for three. He had pressure of not only being number one in the world but also of getting the team back and getting runs on the board.In the final Test it was very disappointing that after putting more than 150 for the first wicket and being 230 for five overnight we were all out for 236 and then dismissed for less than 80 in the second innings. But if you actually saw Murali bowling that day, that’s what he is capable of doing. For three days in that match the guys were doing very well and hanging in there, but then Murali bowled that spell and it set the team back. We went into that day really keen to have a good fourth day and get ourselves into a winning position. Unfortunately Murali bowled too well that day and we were unable to build on the overnight score.After the tours of Sharjah, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, I thought Heath Streak’s performance was very good. Travis Friend showed improvement, as did Trevor Gripper. The most important thing now is to get consistency from all the players. If we manage that, we will be very competitive.After the three months that we have been away I am happy with the couple of changes that have been made to the team for India. Obviously bringing Alistair Campbell back in the team was good. We all know that he is a very experienced player whp has been in terrific form in the A team and hopefully he can bring that form into our team.At the end of the day we need all our batsmen to raise the bar and improve on their performance because if you don’t get enough runs on the board then obviously you don’t give your bowlers a chance. That’s what our goal will be when we get to India.There has been the need for a specialist spinner and Raymond Price has come into the team, which is good. Grant Flower bowled very well for us in Sri Lanka. We have Trevor Gripper who can roll his arm over but atthe end of the day it will be very helpful if all the bowlers do their job in India.You know India is a good place for swing and seam bowling so I think we have our bowling for the tour pretty balanced. I also hope that the guys have learnt a lot playing against Murali. He is the benchmark, isn’t he? He is the best spinner you can play against and I’m sure when we get to India our batsmen will be a lot more positive and take what they learnt in Sri Lanka into that series.We will not be worried about having to play just one warm-up match in India because we have just come from Sri Lanka where they have similar conditions. Players are now used to having just a couple of net sessions, one warm-up match and go straight into the one-day and Test matches.Every team in the world struggles to play well away from home and when I was coach of Australia it was our goal to improve on our away performance. That’s something that the guys here have spoken about and something that we will address before the series starts inIndia.Those players who have been dropped from the first team should go back and play cricket. It’s important that those players who get left out of the first team can go back on to the domestic scene and play for Zimbabwe A, and prove to the selectors that they want to return. That’s why it’s important to have more threeor four-day cricket because not everyone can make the A team. Players like Gary Brent, Mluleki Nkala and HenryOlonga need threeor four-day cricket so that they can go out there and perform, get themselves back in good nick and put themselves back in contention for first-team places.Personally I would want to see a lot more threeand four-day cricket played over a long period of time. I think that it’s very important for the development of young players. At the moment I think there are only five three-day matches on the domestic scene every season, but hopefully we can get ten games a season. This gives players an opportunity to go out there and make big scores and bowlers can bowl long spells.

Desculpem voltar ao assunto. Mas a cada dia que passa, o imbróglio do Maracanã ganha proporções que extrapolam os limites do futebol, de uma briga comercial, política ou administrativa. A discussão sobre o futuro do estádio já é um retrato fiel do Brasil de hoje, o que temos sido como sociedade: as partes só olham para o próprio umbigo, o governo fica paralisado por suas próprias mazelas, a Justiça é chamada a decidir o que deveria ser senso comum e o interesse público vai ficando em segundo, terceiro ou sabe-se lá em que plano mais.

Só para relembrar, já aconteceu de tudo no estádio: peças do acervo histórico foram roubadas, cadeiras desapareceram, a limpeza e a manutenção, inclusive do gramado, foram suspensas, a Light cortou a energia por falta de pagamento, prestadores de serviço estão à beira da falência, sem ter como recuperar o investimento no que foi terceirizado pela concessionária, donos de camarotes e cadeiras não sabem o que vem pela frente e vai por aí. Flamengo e Fluminense, enquanto isso, vão pulando de galho e galho procurado um campo para jogar e caçar um níquel aqui outro acolá.

A historinha não colou, mas serviu de justificativa para que abandonasse o Maracanã à própria sorte, até ser obrigada a reassumir – ou fingir que reassumiu – a gestão do estádio, por uma decisão da Justiça.

Esse capítulo se encerra aí. O que se viu desde então e até aqui é pura enrolação do governo do Rio em resolver a questão. O caminho mais óbvio, a abertura de uma nova licitação que permitisse aos clubes fazerem parte dos consórcios candidatos, tendo participação ativa na gestão do estádio – como quer o Flamengo, e em parte o Fluminense – estranhamente, digamos assim, vem sendo refutado pelo governador Pezão. No mínimo, os motivos dessa resistência deveriam ser revelados, com transparência, evitando-se assim as mais variadas especulações, algumas comprometedoras, sobre as razões da demora.

O papel dos clubes no processo de privatização de estádios é essencial Ontem, no Pacaembu, um amistoso contra o Kenitra, do Marrocos, marcou o início da temporada 2017 do Santos. O jogo foi mais um passo na direção de fazer do velho estádio a casa do Peixe na capital, negociação que está em curso entra a diretoria e a nova administração municipal. Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is seemingly nearing the exit door after being told that he is free to leave Jurgen Klopp’s side for good this summer during talks last weekend.

What’s the story?

The 25-year-old has spent the last three campaigns away from Anfield on season-long loans and is now close to joining Porto after impressing at the Portuguese giants’ last term.

This is all according to a report from Football Insider, who claim that the Reds are holding out for a £15 million fee for Grujic following negotiations with the Dragons.

Klopp will be buzzing

News that the Liverpool hierarchy are close to securing a sale will surely have Klopp buzzing as he aims to strengthen his first-team squad.

The German manager should be in the market for more players over the coming months, with the addition of a new central midfielder likely taking priority, given the exit of Gini Wijnaldum.

France Under-21 international defender Ibrahima Konate has already arrived on Merseyside, but they are likely to need further reinforcements to regain their Premier League crown.

However, with the ongoing impact of the pandemic severely hampering Liverpool’s financial might in the transfer market, selling several fringe players may be the best way to raise the required funds needed to make these additions.

Star names such as Saul Niguez, Patson Daka and Raphinha have been linked with big-money moves in recent weeks, yet any significant potential arrivals are likely to hinge on Director of Football Michael Edwards shifting the deadwood first, with The Athletic’s James Pearce posting on Twitter that ‘further new arrivals after the signing of Konate will be influenced by how much is generated from player sales.’

Grujic joined the 19-time English champions back in 2016 from boyhood club Red Star Belgrade, though he struggled to ever establish himself in the first-team squad.

After making just 16 appearances for Liverpool throughout his five-year stay, it seems as though his time in English football is drawing to a close.

Following promising loan spells at Cardiff City and Hertha Berlin, the Serbian found his feet at Porto in 2020/21, scoring twice in 39 appearances for Sergio Conceicao’s men.

A return to the Estadio do Dragao appears to be the best solution for all relevant parties, and Klopp may now be able to press on with his own transfer plans as he plots his way back to the summit of English football, with some extra funds at his disposal.

With potentially an extra £15m in the bank with a space now freed up in his squad and with some more money off the wage bill, Klopp should be happy that the sale of Grujic looks to be completed.
