Everton returned to winning ways last weekend as they beat Southampton 2-1 in a fairly dominant performance at St. Mary’s.

Snapshot

Everton looked much better down on the south coast than they have done in their past two Premier League games. In truth, after registering 24 shots and reducing Southampton to just four, the Toffees should be irritated it was not more.

One man who was part of this convincing victory was Alex Iwobi, who came off the bench this time to impress the Everton faithful. The former Arsenal man would enter the fray towards the end of the game in place of Theo Walcott, and put in a decent performance in a short amount of time.

Finally some competition amongst players

Gylfi Sigurdsson also put in a great show in the number 10 spot with four key passes, and this will now give Marco Silva much-needed competition within the squad.

Within the 16 minutes that Iwobi entered the pitch, he had 14 touches, played a key pass and also hit the woodwork.

The Nigeria international added a bit more mobility to the attack late on and showed Silva he can offer something different.

Iwobi has started just two games from an attacking midfield position so far, but his 7.02 rating in this spot compared to 6.31 from the left suggests it is his best position. On the other hand, Sigurdsson has had a topsy-turvy season from his usual spot behind the striker.

From scoring 13 goals in the league last season to registering just the one so far, the former Swansea man’s importance appears to have diminished and it’s down to the likes of Iwobi to fill the creative void.

Now, it seems that Silva is finally going to get some much-needed competition within the squad, which will only boost performances.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Garry Monk needs to be consistent with his team selection if the club are to mount a serious promotion challenge this season, that’s at least according to former Chelsea and FA Cup winner Scott Minto.

What’s he said?

The Owls currently sit three points outside of the playoff zone in eighth position after a run of games saw potential points snatched from their grasp.

Last time out, Swansea City hit back in injury time just minutes after Morgan Fox thought he had won it for the south Yorkshiremen, and the week before Monk’s men allowed Blackburn Rovers back in the game with a late flurry to win it.

The 40-year-old was only appointed in September as Steve Bruce’s successor and hasn’t yet been able to make any additions to the side with his arrival being outside the transfer window.

Minto, the presenter of Sky Sports’ Championship coverage, believes he has the solution, he said:

“You look at the players that Sheffield Wednesday have got and they have some excellent players.

“He’s done very to set them up defensive, which is something that isn’t a surprise with Garry Monk.

“I think that the teams that do well are the teams that don’t make many changes, so he’s got to find a formula and a right eleven.

“Sometimes the hardest decision is sticking with the same side when things aren’t going well to let the team develop, but I think Garry Monk’s got the experience to do that.”

Consistency

Wednesday have used 22 different players this Championship campaign with just one player, Kadeem Harris, starting all 16 matches, per WhoScored.

Although some of this will have been down to caretaker boss Lee Bullen, it does show that the Owls have chopped and changed their starting XI on multiple occasions.

In recent times, injuries have meant that Monk has had to reshuffle his pack – Barry Bannan was a surprise absence one week, then last time out Julian Borner and Sam Hutchinson were missing.

When and if the Wednesday chief gets a full squad to select from, then he should listen to Minto’s advice as the team needs to develop as a settled core group rather than changing it up each week.

One example is Stoke City who are struggling in 23rd this season, they have used 27 different players already, and it’s only just November.

As confirmed on the club’s official website, Edwin van der Sar has penned a new long-term deal to stay at Ajax.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent weeks and months had linked the Dutchman with a possible move to Manchester United to take up a key role amongst the backroom staff, with a newly-formed director of football role being mooted.

The former goalkeeper then admitted he would be keen on taking up a position at his former side where he won four Premier League titles. However, Ajax have now confirmed that their CEO has signed a contract extension at the club, and thereby ending any speculation he could potentially jump ship to Old Trafford in the near future.

Speaking after the announcement, he said (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News): “Our common goal is to join the European top with Ajax. That is ambitious and I love that. Together with the rest of the management team I am happy to continue to get that together as a whole. We are well on the way, but we are not there yet.”

Another Woodward mistake

When rumours were abound that United were keen on appointing someone to a very high-profile position behind the scenes, either as a sporting or technical director, names like Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher were thrown about. Now, whilst the duo were fine players for the Red Devils in their own rights, they have no experience whatsoever when it comes to the actual job description.

Van der Sar on the other hand has forged a burgeoning reputation at Ajax as the Dutch side’s CEO, and their run to the Champions League semi-finals last season certainly provides evidence of the kind of success he has enjoyed there. That level of actual job experience, and his affinity with the Old Trafford faithful from his playing days, would have made him the ideal candidate for Ed Woodward to have appointed.

Instead, United’s executive vice-chairman has since insisted their current approach of working, particularly when it comes to recruitment, is the right one. Woodward should have convinced Van der Sar to join the project in Manchester and lead their revival. But, his pride and ego at wanting to do things his own way has cost the club yet again.

Now, United face the prospect of seeing Woodward once again be at the forefront of the club’s footballing business off-the-pitch, and that’s exactly what they didn’t want.

By now, we all know the story of Philippe Coutinho’s far from ideal transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona.

The now 27-year-old Brazilian made the big switch to Catalonia but ended up regretting it really quickly. After a rather short spell with the Blaugrana, Coutinho was promptly shipped off on loan to Bayern Munich, where he is currently plying his trade.

And for a short while, life was good in Bavaria and the Brazilian was finally finding his feet.

Unfortunately, that didn’t last as some old flaws came back to light and now, he only has two goals and four assists in 15 games played across all competitions in the current campaign.

Bayern reportedly have a clause that states they can buy the player from Barcelona for €120m (£102.6m) but as things currently stand, only a big improvement in his performances could actually warrant such a price tag.

Of course, we can’t know for sure whether the Bavarians actually plan on activating said clause or not but it’s pretty safe to assume that Coutinho will have to convince them to do so by being an important player in their ongoing campaign. Despite a good start, as we have already stated, he still seems to be far from that at the moment.

But Sport Bild (via Mundo Deportivo) have recently come out with an interesting piece of information that could actually give Barcelona an unexpected boost in this scenario, assuming they still want to get rid of the Brazilian.

The outlet states the now-former Tottenham Hotspur man, Mauricio Pochettino, who was recently replaced by Jose Mourinho, could be heading to Bayern Munich next summer and there, he would reunite with Coutinho.

Of course, they spent some time together back at Espanyol and just recently, The Sun spoke at length about Pochettino being fuming with the board for actually not getting Coutinho to Spurs last summer.

But with the two of them finally meeting once again in Bavaria, the ex-Spurs manager would finally get his man but would have to pay the aforementioned £102.6m clause to get him.

If he was truly so adamant in getting him last summer, he might want to do the same come next summer, only this time, he could get the necessary backing from the board.

This is basically the ideal scenario for Barcelona, who could profit from this Pochettino to Bayern transaction if it were really to happen in the near future.

But a lot of it is still on Coutinho as the player will have to perform well enough to warrant that huge release clause.

Alan Hutton has suggested that Henri Lansbury may need to consider leaving Aston Villa if he doesn’t start getting more game time, as reported by Football Insider.

What did he say?

Lansbury has found himself on the periphery at Villa this season, having played just 28 minutes of Premier League football, which have come across four substitute appearances.

It says a lot about his role within the team that three of those were five minutes long or less.

This lack of game time will likely be a source of frustration for the 29-year-old and Hutton feels this should have him considering his future.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Villa full-back said: “Henri Lansbury, I think in the cup game against Wolves I thought he was outstanding. He’s really had to wait a long time to get in the fold and it’s been difficult for him.

“He’s one that I’ve known for a long, long time now, he’s one that is desperate to show his worth. It’s coming to a big time in his Villa career now where it’s either he gets a chance or maybe it’s time to think of elsewhere.”

Hard to deny

It is hard to deny that there has to come a point where Lansbury calls an end to his time with Villa, especially as he is now approaching his thirties.

In addition to his age, it can be indicated that there is little more he could have done with the limited opportunities offered to him this season, especially in the Carabao Cup.

Against Crewe Alexandra, Lansbury got a hat-trick of assists as Villa won 6-1, with that tally including an intelligently played back-heel to set Jack Grealish up for a first-time finish.

Then, having missed the Brighton & Hove Albion match, the 29-year-old assisted both of the goals against Wolverhampton Wanderers to secure a quarter-final place.

This offers an indication of how useful Lansbury can be for a team who would use him, so if things don’t change he could be better off heading elsewhere to get more regular minutes.

In other news, a former Villa player has recommended someone who should be signed in January.
