انتهت مساء اليوم الإثنين منافسات الجولة الحادية والثلاثين من بطولة الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز، بتعادل سلبي بين فريقي إيفرتون وبرايتون.

وشهدت الجولة فوز ليفربول على أستون فيلا بهدفين مقابل هدف، وخسارة مانشستر سيتي بالنتيجة نفسها أمام ليدز يونايتد.

Sunderland showed exactly what they have to offer with the 5-0 hammering of Tranmere in midweek, and another display of attacking intent will likely yield a positive result again.

Phil Parkinson will likely bear than in mind as his squad travels to Shrewsbury, and though there are some notable absentees, the Black Cats should feel confident.

Sam Ricketts’ side have just one win in five, and in Aiden McGeady, who returns after serving a one-match suspension, Sunderland have one of their most creative outlets back.

The Irishman has four goals and three assists this term, and his presence should make up for the injured Gooch, who got on the scoresheet in midweek.

With his team impressing against Rovers, Parkinson will likely stick with much the same team, but since Duncan Watmore has only just returned from a long injury lay-off, he may be rested after featuring in the last two fixtures

As a result, here is how the new manager will likely line-up on Saturday.

Watmore’s omission may disappoint fans after his brilliant display last time out, but it is for the best.

Sunderland need him to be fit for the full season and therefore his recuperation must be managed carefully. After all, he did suffer two ACL injuries in as many years.

Furthermore, if the Black Cats are struggling to break down Shrewsbury, his pace could be a very effective weapon from the bench, and Parkinson could use him in that way to run in behind a tiring defence – just like he did for his goal on Tuesday.

Marc McNulty could be the man to replace him, likely under instruction to join Will Grigg in the box in order to get on the end of chances, and in doing so create more space for the Northern Ireland international to operate in.

Grigg scored his first league goal of the season against Tranmere, and he could be key to his team this year. Another strong performance would do him the world of good, and McNulty’s presence in the box could help him score again, as he would be able to run onto crosses from deep.

Parkinson therefore has a few options at his disposal. He has shown already that he knows how to use them, and that should put Sunderland in a strong position on Saturday.

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Micky Hazard has named the extremely attacking starting XI he would select when Spurs host Red Star Belgrade in their latest Champions League group game on Tuesday night.

What’s he said?

Well, the 59-year-old has taken to Twitter to give his views on who should be on the team-sheet for Mauricio Pochettino’s men when they host the Serbian club at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tonight.

He tweeted:

An attacking line-up for sure, which includes Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min.

A good idea?

It’s certainly a bold one.

If Spurs can pin back their opponents from the very first whistle using the quality of players they have in attacking areas, it could just be the formula to stop them suffering another disappointing performance and result, as they have done against Bayern Munich, Brighton and Hove Albion and Watford in their previous three fixtures in all competitions.

However, a presumable central midfield duo of Tanguy Ndombele and Eriksen is hardly going to provide the defence with the required protection, and that has to be a worry considering they have conceded 11 goals in those aforementioned trio of matches with more defensively-minded players than the Dane in Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko.

It’s difficult to see Pochettino being quite so brave in that respect and then playing Sissoko at right-back too given the current form the north London outfit are in, but some Tottenham fans may well rather see their team go for it rather than the ponderous football they have been subjected to at points this term.

The word “shambles” will only go some way to describing the scenes that took place at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday as Arsenal hosted Crystal Palace.

The first nine minutes were actually very positive, with the Gunners leading 2-0 through Sokratis and David Luiz. However, things turned sour, and the Eagles managed to earn themselves a point by drawing 2-2.

The result was almost forgotten, though, thanks to Granit Xhaka’s extraordinary tantrum as he was subbed off in the second half.

An unpopular figure in north London, he was met with boos as he trudged off the field and down the tunnel.

He responded by shouting an expletive in the direction of the stands. The matter was made even worse by the fact he is the club captain.

The Switzerland international was given the armband a few weeks ago after a secret ballot amongst his teammates had deemed him to be the best man for the job.

Since then, Unai Emery hasn’t defended him, saying he was wrong. Former Arsenal great Nigel Winterburn has even demanded he be stripped of the captaincy.

The problem is, the former Sevilla boss has backed himself into a corner, and he now faces an impossible decision where he simply cannot emerge with any credibility.

On the one hand, it makes a certain amount of sense to ask some players their opinion of who should be their skipper, but by actually allowing a full vote, it shows that the 26-year-old is by far the clear choice – perhaps it was a popularity contest more than possessing the required attributes to captain?

If he now removes him as captain, he will lose the majority of support amongst the players, which he is said to have already done in part. It will be seen as a betrayal. After all, his post-match comments suggest he isn’t in the manager’s good books.

However, if he keeps him as captain, it sends out a terrible message to the fans and, again, the players.

The way he reacted to the supporters was unprofessional, even if it was understandable given the abuse he has often received. The supporters are the lifeblood of the club, so surely they cannot be treated in such a way without consequences?

It would also show to the players they can get away with an awful lot without being reprimanded.

The 47-year-old boss finds himself in a Catch 22, and it is all of his own making. His error of judgement leaves him in an incredibly difficult situation, and now we must wait to see how he emerges from it.

Former Everton man Michael Ball has identified the club’s main issue as their inability to produce quality in the final third.

What did he say?

Everton have struggled both defensively and in attack this season, forcing them into an early relegation scrap as a result. The club’s 11 goals from 11 games in the Premier League currently puts them in 17th and has heaped immense pressure on the players and Marco Silva.

Ball told the Liverpool Echo: “We just need more quality in the final third, that’s what’s been letting us down when sometimes it seems like we run out of ideas a little bit.

“We’re okay at passing around the back and in midfield but if we can get it right more often in that final third, it can help get us back up that league table.”

Lack of quality and consistency

Som Everton players have proven to be a handful in previous seasons. The likes of Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson scored 13 league goals last season, whilst Alex Iwobi’s six assists with Arsenal last year prove he can be creative.

However, this season, Iwobi has not assisted at all and Richalison and Sigurdsson have just three league goals between them.

Part of this is also down to Marco Silva, who has constantly chopped and changed his side. The former Watford boss has often gone with Richarlison up top but then tried the Brazilian out on the wings as well.

Then there is Moise Kean, who Silva doesn’t seem to understand whatsoever. The Italian scored seven goals from a centre-forward position with Juventus last season, but Silva has resorted to playing him as a winger on a handful of occasions.

The 42-year-old needs to establish his strongest starting XI to transform Everton’s fortunes in the final third.
