Newcastle fans have been left baffled by Graeme Souness’ thoughts on his managerial stint on Tyneside.

The Magpies got off to a disappointing start to the season on Sunday, falling to a 1-0 defeat to a relatively weak Arsenal XI.

The Gunners capitalised on a mistake from Jetro Willems to find the game’s only goal, but something Souness said while on punditry duty for Sky Sports has caught just as much attention as the result itself, now that the dust has settled.

“There is a frustration at Newcastle because they feel they should be so much better. Fifty thousand people every week, they are a big football club. I had eight jobs and that was the most difficult one I ever had,” he told Sky Sports.

“Matt Ritchie touched on it with an interview this week, saying everyone has to row in the same direction. The job is hard enough when everyone is pulling in the same direction.

“I got the job, the local press man was an absolute fool, I can’t remember his name. He was proud to say he got the last four managers sacked. That’s a local newspaper, they should be promoting the football club not damaging it at every opportunity.”

And while some fans may agree with his verdicts on the media pressure, most are just annoyed that the 66 year-old seems determined to blame anyone but himself for his failures at the club.

Indeed, the Liverpool legend tore apart Sir Bobby Robson’s side, who had been in a European semi-final not long before the Scot’s arrival, and was replaced roughly 18 months later having never really found his feet at the club.

These Southampton fans on Twitter believe they have identified the player the club has submitted a late deal sheet for on transfer deadline day – Augsburg centre-back Kevin Danso.

Daily Echo journalist Adam Leitch was the first to tweet that Saints were still trying to get a signing over the line after the initial 5pm deadline, with clubs given an extra two hours to get a transfer completed if they are some way down the line.

Freelance football writer Lars Pollmann tweeted late on Thursday afternoon that Kicker expected Danso to move to a unnamed Premier League club, and it makes sense that it would be the south coast outfit.

After all, he is a centre-back – a position that has been a priority ever since Southampton signed Che Adams according to The Telegraph – he fits into manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s new signings age policy of being under 24 as he is 20, and he is Austrian, the same nationality as Hasenhuttl.

Saints supporters believe they have put two and two together to come up with Danso, who has made 44 first-team appearances for Bundesliga outfit Augsburg.

Speaking to Goal, Borussia Dortmund star Axel Witsel has revealed he turned down the chance to sign for Manchester United last summer.

What’s the word?

The Belgium international was playing for Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian for a couple of seasons, before leaving for Dortmund last year.

Now, Witsel has admitted that whilst he was initially approached by the German side’s sporting director Michael Zorc, he had other offers from the likes of United and PSG as well.

He said: “First (Dortmund sporting director) Michael Zorc approached me, then (manager) Lucien Favre called me. I also had other offers, maybe I could have gone to Paris or Manchester, but I did not want to wait. And I had the feeling that I was the first choice for Dortmund. It is important to feel good when you go to a new club. So after the talks with Zorc, Favre and (CEO) Hans-Joachim Watzke, I decided to join BVB.”

Another missed opportunity

So Witsel becomes yet another signing United didn’t pull off in the Jose Mourinho era. The Portuguese boss seemed to have an abundance of transfer targets, but saw many fail to come to fruition.

Whilst at 30 Witsel may be approaching the wrong stage of his career, there is no doubting he still possesses the quality to be a United star. Last season, the Belgian managed six goals in 43 games across all competitions, and showed his ability to adapt by playing as both a holding and central midfielder.

To open the current Premier League campaign up, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba at the base of his midfield. Whilst it has produced an unbeaten start, the duo could struggle to maintain their form over the course of a season. Indeed, the United boss’ seeming reluctance to play Nemanja Matic, and lack of replacement for Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini, means the Red Devils are short on cover.

Witsel would have represented a ready-made star, capable of stepping into the team straight away.

وتابع: “بالنسبة لكل من ميسي وكريستيانو رونالدو، التواجد هنا في أمريكا يمنحك المزيد من الحرية في التحرك، إذا كنت تريد الذهاب للسينما أو تناول الطعام في مطعم خارجي أو شراء احتياجاتك من السوبر ماركت”.

وانضم لوكاكو من مانشستر يونايتد إلى إنتر ميلان قبل عامين تقريبًا مقابل 74 مليون يورو، وأصبح البلجيكي الدولي أحد أهم العناصر التي يعتمد عليها المدرب أنطونيو كونتي.

دفع إنتر ميلان حتى الآن لصالح مانشستر يونايتد مبلغًا قيمته 24 مليون يورو فقط، ويتبقى 50 مليون يورو تدفع على أقساط أخرى ضمن الاتفاق بين الناديين.
