Revealed: 91% of Newcastle fans want Jullien to replace Lejeune

Newcastle fans have been discussing making a move for Christopher Jullien, and a whopping 91 per cent think it would be a smart move.

According to Robin Bairner, Newcastle are one of three clubs “tracking” Jullien, who was linked with a move to Tyneside earlier this summer.

Bairner claims the towering defender is available for an incredible price of €10m (£8.9m), and that Southampton and Everton are both in the race as well.

The magpies signed Fabian Schar to replace Chancel Mbemba, but the injury to Florian Lejeune means they simply must bring in another defender.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”275695″ player=”12034″ title=”Ings Dilemma Anfield Benchwarmer or Newcastle Hero”]

Lejeune will require surgery on a cruciate ligament injury, so Benitez will pretty much have to plan for the whole season without him.

Jullien is a colossal defender, standing at 6 ft 5 and regularly chipping in with goals at the attacking end.

As well as being a huge threat from set pieces, he’s not a bad defender either, averaging six clearances and four aerial wins per game for Toulouse last season.

It’s clear fans are desperate for some new signings, as a whopping 91 per cent said they should make a move, and at such a bargain price this might be one that Mike Ashley will actually go fort.

Liverpool needed a stable centre-back like Tarkowski in summer window

Liverpool should have made an attempt to sign Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski amid claims from manager Jurgen Klopp that he could be short of defenders for Sunday’s Premier League opener against West Ham United.

What’s the word?

Liverpool had one of the more successful transfer windows compared to their top-four rivals in the Premier League.

Manchester United brought in just one first-team member in the form of midfielder Fred, while Manchester City’s only major signing was Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City.

Tottenham Hotspur had the worst window of all, though, as they failed to bring in a single new player before Thursday’s deadline.

Liverpool strengthened the midfield with Fabinho and Naby Keita, while Xherdan Shaqiri joined the attack and Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson arrived with pressure on his shoulders following his switch from Roma.

Despite suffering with problems in defence, the Reds opted against signing a new centre-back, but after Klopp confirmed that a handful of defenders could miss this weekend’s action, perhaps the manager should have had a rethink.

Would Tarkowski have fitted in?

The Burnley centre-back’s name does not carry as much glamour as perhaps some other targets.

However, last season in particular, the 25-year-old was a solid and stable presence in the Clarets’ back line.

Virgil van Dijk has significantly improved Liverpool’s defence following his transfer from Southampton in January, but the jury is still out on his partner.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255848″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Liverpool’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

Dejan Lovren is currently first choice, but the Croatia international has a mistake in him, while Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez are not always the most convincing on the pitch.

A player like Tarkowski, who is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, would have linked up well with Van Dijk.

The Englishman is strong in the air, which is useful not only in defence but for set pieces in the final third as well.

Depending on how Liverpool are doing, they should consider a bid for Tarkowski in the January window.

Leeds fans looking forward to seeing Blackman

Leeds United have made a very impressive start to their 2018-19 Championship campaign – beating Stoke City and Derby County to put an early six points on the board.Indeed, the Whites recorded a 3-1 win over Stoke on the opening weekend of the campaign, before thumping Derby 4-1 away from home on Saturday afternoon. Now the club will switch their attentions to the League Cup as they prepare to take on fellow Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night. There is no question that Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa will make changes for the Bolton clash, and the club’s fans have been discussing the team on social media.[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257599″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Leeds’ opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]Bailey Peacock-Farrell has started the season as Leeds’ number one goalkeeper, but the club’s supporters want to see on-loan Chelsea ace Jamal Blackman handed his debut for the club against Bolton at Elland Road.A selection of the Twitter reaction in relation to the 24-year-old can be seen below:

West Ham United would be better suited for youngster Azah than Arsenal

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal and West Ham United are among the clubs interested in teenage Irish winger Elvis Azah.

What’s the word?

The opportunity to buy new players has ended for another summer in the Premier League, but youth players can still be recruited.

The Daily Mail reports that 17-year-old Azah has attracted the interest of Arsenal and West Ham United, as well as Tottenham Hotspur.

The winger scored twice against the Hammers while at Cardiff City for pre-season, but it is unclear where his future lies.

Azah, who can play on either side of the pitch or up front, was born in Ghana but moved to Ireland with his mother when he was 11 years old and has since gained Irish citizenship.

What is the youngster’s best option?

The path that a young player takes at this stage of his career can either result in a successful career or one that never gets off the ground.

Given his age, it would be best for Azah to choose a club that can best serve his needs with regards to development.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham have strong academies, but he may have a harder route to the first team than if he chose West Ham.

Manuel Pellegrini brought in nine players during the summer transfer window, which suggests that he will have to bide his time before attracting the attention of the manager.

However, he is more likely to receive first-team minutes at the London Stadium if he impresses in the development sides.

If Azah is destined for greatness, then the so-called ‘bigger’ clubs will come knocking eventually.

It is best for him not to take that step too soon.

Versatile Veloso would be a shrewd signing for Silva and Everton

Everton are reportedly set to battle Wolves for the free signing of Miguel Veloso, and it could be another stroke of genius from Marcel Brands.

What’s the story?

According to Teamtalk, Everton and Wolves have both “shown interest” in the veteran midfielder, who is a free agent after opting not to renew his contract with Serie A side Genoa.

The Premier League window is of course closed, but Veloso could still sign for a Premier League side as he became a free agent before the window closed.

The 32 year-old can play as a midfielder or defender, and the report claims Marco Silva would like to add even more to his squad after an impressive late surge in the transfer market.

New director of football Brands has already worked his magic this summer, but getting an experienced, versatile and reliable international for free might just be his best move yet.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”280645″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Dodgy De Gea & Arsenal’s MiniRevolution”]

Another Brands bargain?

Veloso is not going to set the league alight aged 32, and he probably wouldn’t even be first choice for Everton, but the 56-cap Portuguese international could play an important role in Silva’s squad.

Silva’s fast-paced and free-flowing football has hit the ground running at Goodison, but it will start to take its toll on the squad as the season wears on. Midfield depth is essential, and Veloso’s calmness in possession would be a valuable trait to have coming off the bench.

The midfield maestro has never averaged below an 80 per cent pass success rate over a full season throughout his career, and his last two seasons with Genoa he averaged well over one key pass per game.

He is just as solid without the ball as with it though, and his tough tackling will quickly endear him to the Goodison faithful. Averaging nearly two tackles and well over one interception per game throughout his career, his intelligence and game-reading ability means Silva could use him in defence as a last resort.

If Silva and Brands are seeking a reliable veteran to take pressure off the first eleven, control matches late on, and fly in with the occasional crunching tackle, then they really can’t go wrong with Veloso.

So, Everton fans, do you think the 32 year-old would be a good signing? Or would you rather stick with what you have? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Big problem: Still 1 issue Krueger & Hughes didn’t fix for Southampton during the summer

Last season certainly didn’t go to plan for the Saints. A club which had been so solid for several seasons in the Premier League found themselves in the mire of a relegation battle, which led to the arrival of Mark Hughes at the club.

The Welsh boss managed to deliver safety for the South Coast outfit, but problems still seemingly remain for the side who finished a below-par 17th last term. Mark Hughes and Ralph Krueger have tried to avoid a repeat of last season, by splashing out on new additions in the summer window. Players the calibre of Mohamed Elyounoussi signed from Basel for relatively big fees, and a much needed goal scorer was signed in the form of Danny Ings from Liverpool.

However, the one issue Krueger and the Welsh boss failed to fix was in the middle of the park. With Steven Davis now 33-years-old and Spaniard Oriol Romeu inconsistent, this is one area which should have been heavily invested in. In truth, ever since Victor Wanyama left St Mary’s Southampton have had a hole in the middle. A true ball-winning defensive midfielder would help the Saints control games in terms of possession and gain a foothold in matches. In the modern game, a holding midfielder is a crucial role.

In the 2-1 loss away at Everton, it was evident Southampton were being overrun in the middle by Everton’s talented midfield. They were in desperate need of a midfielder who could break up play and prevent the Merseyside club from being too comfortable on the ball. Now they have the firepower up front in the form of Danny Ings, they need to make sure they get the ball to his feet as much as possible. Not signing a top-rate defensive midfielder in the summer window is something Ralph Krueger and Mark Hughes will live to regret.

Clayton’s comments confirm exactly why Middlesbrough will be vying for promotion this season

The Championship’s top scorers Leeds United were unable to add to their goal tally having been held to a 0-0 draw by Middlesbrough last night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men went into the game having scored two or more goals in previous clashes against Stoke City, Derby County, Rotherham, Swansea City and Norwich City, but could not find a way past Tony Pulis’ men.

And Middlesbrough midfielder Adam Clayton has been quick to praise the tactics of his manager.

The Breakdown

“We pride ourselves on keeping clean sheets,” £2.7m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Clayton told Middlesbrough’s official club website after the game.

“We start with zero, the gaffer says, and if we finish it with zero we’ve got a good chance of winning the game. Our first priority is to not let the other team score and then do what we do.”

Clayton’s comments on his team’s performance is quite telling and is what everyone has come to expect from a Tony Pulis side.

And, while the Middlesbrough boss tends to come under criticism for how he sets up his team and his philosophy in general, more often than not, it gets results and helps the club to achieve its respective goal for the campaign.

Bar his final season at West Brom, Pulis has usually been able to complete the task at hand, even if it was not done in the most prettiest of fashions.

Regardless of how ugly it can be, Pulis gets results and, with that in mind, you can expect Middlesbrough to be one of the frontrunners for promotion.

Tottenham fans had mixed reaction to Serge Aurier captaining Ivory Coast

Tottenham right-back Serge Aurier captained the Ivory Coast to a 2-1 victory over Rwanda in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday but received a mixed response from the Spurs faithful.

The 25-year-old full back played the full 90 minutes of the match, and helped guide his nation to their first victory in the qualification group stage.

Aurier has started just one Premier League match under Mauricio Pochettino so far this season, making one further appearance off the bench in Tottenham’s 3-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford in August.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”288872″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafas Pub Facts Murray The Magician & Desperately Seeking Zaha”]

The former Paris Saint-Germain defender has represented the Ivory Coast 48 times since making his debut for his nation in 2013, and was an integral part of the squad that won the African Cup of Nations in 2015.

Tottenham fans are yet to see Aurier’s full potential for the Lilywhites, as the full back has made just 18 Premier League appearances since joining the club in August 2017.

But, it hasn’t stopped the Spurs fan base taking to Twitter to share their view on Aurier’s captaincy of Ivory Coast.

Liverpool fans bash Karius after comments on Besiktas fans

Loads of Liverpool fans have been bashing Loris Karius, as the German goalkeeper has made some bizarre comments on his new home in Turkey.

[ad_pod ]

It’s fair to say there was simply no way back for Karius at Liverpool after his Champions League final nightmare, as the young goalkeeper looked a shell of his former self.

The 25 year-old was shipped off on loan after making multiple errors in pre-season, joining Turkish giants Besiktas on a temporary deal with a view to a permanent move.

Besiktas are known for having some pretty intense fans, and the 6 ft 2 in stopper has had his say on the welcome he has received in Istanbul.

“I did not have this many fans in England and I can say most seem to be female,” he told Turkish outlet Fanatik.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”291236″ player=”12034″ title=”Jose Mourinho Has Turned Into Arsene Wenger”]

“Whenever I am out and about in Istanbul whoever recognizes me wants a photograph.”

While this doesn’t seem like a direct dig at Liverpool, the Reds are very proud of their passionate support, and they’re not too impressed by what they perceive to be a parting dig.

The 25 year-old made 29 Premier League appearances at Anfield, but he seems to have burned his bridges now, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…

Tyler Roberts must take a leaf out of Kemar Roofe’s book to make the grade at Leeds United

Leeds United supporters have been reasonably satisfied in the last few days after seeing their side maintain their unbeaten start to the new Championship season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men went into their meeting with Millwall at the Den on Saturday having won four and drawn the other two of their first six league games, a run which propelled them to top spot prior to kick-off. And the Whites remain at the summit of the second tier after earning a 1-1 draw from their trip to the capital, with Jack Harrison’s 89th minute strike cancelling out Jed Wallace’s opener to preserve Leeds’ unbeaten start to the 2018/19 campaign.

As such, there have been many satisfied Leeds fans up and down the country in recent times, especially given their side were without several first teamers for the trip to the Den, not least Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez.

And the former’s injury problems prompted Bielsa to start with 19-year-old Tyler Roberts upfront, and while the forward didn’t quite have the desired impact on his first Championship start for the Whites, he should take a leaf out of Roofe’s book to make the grade at Elland Road.

Ultimately, two-times Wales international Roberts made the move to Leeds during the summer after coming up through the ranks and beginning his senior career at West Brom, yet he mustered just two Carabao Cup appearances for Bielsa’s side prior to making his Championship bow at the Den on Saturday.

And while he showed glimpses of promise in his 68 minutes on the pitch at the weekend, he was guilty of missing a few good chances during that time – chances which, if taken, would likely have sealed all three points for the Yorkshire heavyweights.

Nonetheless, Leeds fans will remember that 25-year-old Roofe, scorer of four goals in four league games this term, also made a sluggish start to life at Elland Road in netting just three times in his first season back in 2016/17 – he wasn’t even close to the player he is now.

Yet a decent campaign last term in bagging 11 times in the league for Leeds has been followed by a mightily impressive start to this one, thus suggesting that Roofe has used the frustration of his first season at the club to his advantage to make him a much better player – one that now looks set to play a key part in Leeds’ push for promotion.

And Roberts must look at Roofe’s meteoric rise in the last few years and apply that to his own progression – at the age of 19, he has a bright future ahead of him, and playing regularly under an outstanding coach in Bielsa will make him better, even if the goals don’t come as freely as he, and indeed Leeds, would like.

Yes, he has only played one game, but there were many parallels between Roberts’ efforts on Saturday and Roofe’s exploits in his first season at Leeds, which is why the former must take a leaf out of the latter’s book to make the grade at the Yorkshire giants.
