Pundit claims Van Dijk is “close” to joining Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has claimed that the club are closing in on the capture of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, despite the controversy surrounding the move.

Last month, the Merseyside outfit released a public apology to the Saints and added that they had withdrawn their interest in Van Dijk.

The reason for this being that the club were accused of ‘tapping up’ the Dutchman, who according to The Express, is rated at £70m.

Despite their public stance, Liverpool have continually been linked to the centre-back, who is also thought to have attracted attention from Chelsea.

The Mirror recently reported that Van Dijk is only interested in moving to Anfield, and now Murphy has claimed that the deal may not be dead just yet.

He told sport360.com:

“Personally, the problem for Liverpool was more defensive [last season]. I think the Van Dijk thing is close. That would be a phenomenal signing. But there’s definitely more business to be done at Anfield.

“My understanding is that they are really trying to push the boat out in bringing new players in to try and compete. I suppose the other question is do they need a striker who can get 20 goals a season.”

So far, manager Jurgen Klopp has recruited two new players this summer, in the form of England Under-20 World Cup winner Dominic Solanke from Chelsea and Roma attacker Mohamed Salah.

Over the last few weeks, the British media have linked the Premier League club to Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita.

HYS: Should Celtic cash-in on Stuart Armstrong?

Stuart Armstrong firmly established himself as a key player for Celtic last season.

The two-cap international didn’t convince everybody after joining the Scottish champions from Dundee in 2015 but he produced his best form to date under Brendan Rodgers last term, bagging an impressive 15 goals from midfield in the top flight.

However, the 25-year-old’s future at Parkhead remains somewhat shrouded in doubt. His current contract is due to expire at the end of next season and Rodgers has himself admitted that there’s been a lack of progress on a new deal.

If the situation continues into January, clubs from outside of Scotland – including those in the Premier League – will be able to discuss pre-contract terms with Armstrong ahead of a free transfer next summer.

So, Celtic fans, how would you handle Armstrong’s situation? Would you wait it out in the hope the club can agree a new deal over the coming months, or cash-in on him by selling to the highest bidder this summer? Let us know by voting below…

In Focus: Mourinho has one eye on Man United future with move for forward

As reported by Portuguese outlet Noticias o Minuto, Manchester United are close to making another summer signing with a deal for young Portuguese talent Bruno Amorim.

What’s the story?

Jose Mourinho has already made a number of high profile signings like Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof this summer, but it seems that he’s also keeping one eye on the future with his latest move in the transfer market.

Noticias o Minuto report that a deal for Oliveirense forward Bruno Amorim.

As quoted by the outlet, club director Antonio Jose Leite said:

He had been promoted to the main squad but [United’s] scout was alert and decided to take him there. At this time the business is 90 per cent done and he may have an excellent contract ahead. The contract will shortly be announced, but he is a future bet at United.

It certainly sounds as if the deal is close to being finalised. However, Man United fans shouldn’t expect to see him in the first team immediately, with the report also stating he’ll be joining up with United’s U23 squad initially, which is overseen by Nicky Butt.

Having made only seven appearances for his current club in the Portuguese second-tier, he has a lot of work ahead of him to find a first team place at Old Trafford, but it is interesting that Mourinho is quietly building a future generation at the club.

Is he putting in place the building blocks for years of success?

Celtic fans really want to see a defender arrive before the transfer deadline

We’re heading into the last few hours of the summer transfer window and it’s no clearer whether Celtic will make a dramatic last-minute move for a central defender or not.

They came close last week of course, missing out on securing a deal for Rivaldo Coetzee due to a problem found in his medical. Since then fans have hoped to see interest in other targets firm up into formal bids but have been left disappointed.

It’s been a problem position for the Scottish champions all summer long with injuries threatening to hamper their UEFA Champions League qualification bid.

While they overcame that test, the likes of Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko have a fight on their hands if they’re to make the Hoops’ opening group stage match against Paris Saint-Germain.

All three of their first-choice central defenders have had injury problems over the last 12 months and some fans reckon it’s risky business to go forward into the season without signing another centre-back.

Supporters took to Twitter today to share their thoughts on the situation and hopes of getting in a man before the midnight deadline…

Liverpool fans pleased to see Coutinho back in training

Having represented Brazil during the recent international break, Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is ‘fit and healthy’ to take to the field, according to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Coutinho returned to Liverpool on Thursday, and it would have been an interesting first day back for the attacker, who desperately tried to engineer a move to Barcelona in the summer.

Liverpool held firm when it came to Barcelona bidding in excess of £100m for Coutinho, however, and the 25-year-old will now remain at Anfield until at least the January transfer window.

It is thought that the attacker, who has only just overcome a back injury, will be on the bench for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City this weekend as Klopp eases him back into the first-team picture.

There are a number of Liverpool supporters that are finding it difficult to forgive Coutinho, but the majority are just pleased to have the Brazil international back in the squad.

Football has a short memory, and if Coutinho comes off the bench to score the winner against Man City this weekend, it seems that all will be forgiven when it comes to his conduct during the summer.

Revealed: 66% of Chelsea fans want Hazard to make first start vs Arsenal

Far from the crisis many predicted after their first game of the season, Chelsea have now picked up four consecutive wins across all competitions despite the absence of their most talented player, Eden Hazard.

Indeed, the Belgium international missed pre-season and the first few weeks of the campaign through injury and Antonio Conte appears to be slowly nursing him back to full fitness, issuing him outings from the bench against Leicester and Qarabag.

The 5 foot 8 attacker still seems to lack that match sharpness but with a huge clash against Arsenal on the horizon – Chelsea have beaten the Gunners just once from their four meetings under Conte – we asked Blues supporters earlier this week whether Hazard should be thrust back into the starting XI on Sunday.

And according to our poll, the majority think he should, although that could run the risk of further injury problems. Who would you drop to make room for Hazard, Chelsea fans? Let us know by commenting below…

Manchester United fans slam Chris Smalling after Crystal Palace win

Manchester United continued their fine start to the season as they beat Crystal Palace 4-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday, but Red Devils fans weren’t too impressed with Chris Smalling’s performance.

The centre-back has found himself behind Phil Jones and Eric Bailly in the pecking order this season, but he started his second match in a week – after his outing against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday – alongside the former against the bottom-of-the-table Eagles.

An early goal from Juan Mata put Jose Mourinho’s men on the way to a comfortable victory, with a brace from Marouane Fellaini and a late goal from Romelu Lukaku rounding off the success but Smalling seemingly failed to make an impression on the Old Trafford faithful.

Manchester United supporters were quick to have their say on the England international’s showing via social media, and while some said he’s “getting sold next summer”, others believe he has “lost the plot”.

Everton fans not impressed as Shakespeare is sacked before Koeman

Leicester City decided to sack Craig Shakespeare on Tuesday following a run of one win in the Foxes’ last eight games in all competitions, and Everton fans are frustrated that their under-fire manager Ronald Koeman has outlasted him.

The east Midlands outfit’s 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the King Power Stadium on Monday night wasn’t enough to save the 53-year-old, whose former team lie just two places and two points below the Toffees in the table.

The Merseyside club’s 1-1 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday means that they have won just two of their 10 matches this season in the Premier League and the group stages of the Europa League, which is seen by many as unacceptable considering the amount that was spent on new players during the summer.

Everton supporters were quick to have their say on Shakespeare’s sacking via social media, and while some said “Leicester City have more balls than Everton”, others praised them for “showing ambition” by getting rid of an underperforming manager.

Aston Villa fans react as Callum O’Hare scores hat-trick for U23s

Aston Villa youngster Callum O’Hare scored a hat-trick as the U23s beat their Newcastle United counterparts 6-0 on Monday night, and Villa fans want to see the attacker given another first-team opportunity by Steve Bruce.

The 19-year-old scored two goals in the first half against the Magpies – the first an impressive left-footed strike – before he completed his treble after the break when he found the net after his initial penalty kick had been saved.

While the teenager has been on the substitutes’ bench for six of Villa’s Championship matches so far this season, he has appeared in only two playing a total of 43 minutes, but he certainly staked his claim for another chance on Monday.

Aston Villa supporters were quick to have their say on his performance via social media, and while some told Bruce to “start him against Preston” at Deepdale on Wednesday, others believe he “should start him instead of Onomah”.

Liverpool fans desperate for £6.3m-rated star to play more minutes

Andrew Robertson has only made three appearances for Liverpool this season following a summer move from Hull City.

The 23-year-old was expected to start the 2017-18 campaign as Liverpool’s first-choice left-back due to Alberto Moreno’s struggles in that position.

Moreno has been a constant for the Reds this term, however, with Robertson being restricted to just three appearances – two of which have been in the Premier League.

There was always going to be a reaction from the Liverpool fans when the club’s official Twitter account pointed out Robertson’s inclusion in the latest Scotland squad.

And it was not much of a surprise when the club’s supporters called for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to hand Robertson more minutes.

The Scot, who is valued at £6.3m by transfermarkt.co.uk, showed that he is good enough to play in the Premier League with some impressive performances for Hull last season. However, it appears that Klopp still needs some convincing.
