'Felt today was going to be my day' – Abhishek dedicates century to Orange Army

“I got a random thought that if I do something today, it would be for the Orange Army”

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Apr-20252:44

Abhishek’s 141 an all-time great knock?

It took a special innings from Abhishek Sharma for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to snap a four-match losing streak in IPL 2025. Abhishek blazed his way to 141 off 55 balls in Hyderabad, against Punjab Kings (PBKS), an innings that featured remarkably consistent ball-striking and a unique century celebration where he pulled out a note from his pocket that read “This one is for Orange Army [SRH’s fans]”.”I wrote it today itself,” Abhishek said of the note, “because I usually wake up and write something. I got a random thought that if I do something today, that would be for Orange Army. Luckily, today I felt it was my day.”Abhishek hit 14 fours and ten sixes in his innings. While a lot of it was power hitting, there were deft shots in the mix as well. Like when Marco Jansen went around the wicket and bowled with no fielder to the left of deep midwicket in the tenth over, Abhishek went across the line and hit two boundaries through fine leg.Related

“If you’ve seen me close enough, I never play anything behind the wicket, but I was still trying few shots because they had a pretty good plan for us outside off. So, I wanted to just invent a few shots which I think was very easy on this pitch because of the [even] bounce and the [boundary] size on one side.”Apart from the recent losses that had put them at the bottom of the points table, SRH came into the game with pressure on their batters, especially Abhishek himself and his fellow opener Travis Head, who had misfired in the last four games. But they put on a 171-run stand in 12.2 overs in a 246-run chase that SRH completed with nine balls to spare. Abhishek said that a calm team environment had ensured that both batters and the rest of the group remained positive.”I’d be lying if I say there was no pressure,” he said. “There is pressure if you don’t do well in three or four innings, especially if your team’s losing. But I never felt that we’ve been losing games, nobody in the team had a negative mindset, there was only positivity from everyone. All were waiting for an explosion like this from SRH team. We had to break the four-match streak today to stay in the table.”SRH have moved up two spots and are now at eighth position on the points table. Their next game is against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Arsenal fans gave £60m ace the Madueke treatment all summer, now he's set to star

The loss to Liverpool was an undeniable setback, but other than that, Arsenal have had a great start to the season this year.

For example, Mikel Arteta’s side won their first Champions League game of the campaign with relative ease.

Then in the Premier League, they’ve not conceded a single goal outside of the game at Anfield while scoring 11 of their own.

Moreover, the summer signings are looking promising, and one player who received similar treatment to Noni Madueke when he first signed could be in for a revival this season.

How Madueke ranks among Arsenal's summer signings

Starting with the player who has caused the most conversation among fans and pundits alike: Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swedish marksman has come in for plenty of quite unfair criticism already this season, particularly over his performances away to Manchester United and Liverpool.

However, those are two of the toughest away days he’s going to have this season, and considering he already has three league goals to his name, and probably could have got one or two more, suggests he’ll be absolutely fine in the long run.

Moreover, with Eberechi Eze in the squad, the former Sporting CP monster is bound to have an abundance of chances created for him.

In fact, the Englishman provided an assist for him in his first start since his high-profile move from Crystal Palace.

The Greenwich-born star might’ve then followed that up with a quieter game against Athletic Bilbao, but even then, he still completed two dribbles, was accurate in 100% of his crosses and long balls and put in four tackles for good measure.

Yet, while there was an expectation that Eze and Gyokeres would hit the ground running in red and white, we don’t think anyone reasonably expected Cristhian Mosquera to be as good as he has been so far.

He looked unreal against Liverpool and then in the last two matches showed that he’s just as much of a ball-playing centre-back as William Saliba, completing 75 passes against Forest and then another 75 back in Spain.

Fellow Spaniard Martin Zubimendi is already starting to make the number six position his own, helping the team tick over with ease and even getting himself on the scoresheet twice at the weekend.

Finally, the player who has perhaps surprised people the most so far, or at least Gary Neville, is Madueke.

When it was revealed that the club were keen on signing the former Chelsea star, there was uproar from certain sections of the fan base and even a petition to stop the deal.

However, in the last few games, he’s looked exceptional, constantly taking on opposition defenders, driving into the box and generally doing the things that get the fans on their feet.

Interestingly, there is a chance that another player in the Arsenal squad who has seen his reputation come crashing down over the last year or so could potentially experience a similar revival over the coming season.

The Arsenal star who could turn it around

There have been a few Arsenal stars who’ve seen their reputations take a hit over the last year, like Oleksandr Zincenko, for example.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, in this instance, the player in question is Gabriel Martinelli.

Just a few years ago, the former Ituano gem was coming off an incredible campaign in which he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 46 games.

However, in the years since, he has not been able to get close to having that same impact, and at the same time, it appears as if his confidence and ability to beat opposition defenders have withered away. It says it all that Arsenal reportedly valued him at £60m in the summer, only for suitors to come back and say they’d only be willing to pay a £40m fee.

Fans have also been losing faith in the Brazilian, with journalist Con Harrison labelling him “lazy” for his performance against Fulham last season and podcaster and writer Phil Costa calling him clunky and indecisive” during the game against Liverpool last month.

However, all is not lost, as the game against Bilbao shows a way in which the 24-year-old can once again become an important part of the squad.

He came off the bench in the game and made use of his incredible pace to beat the Spaniard’s defence in a foot race and slot home the opening goal.

Now, to be clear, we don’t think the Guarulhos-born international should be anywhere near the starting lineup for some time, but he could become an incredible option off the bench.

Moreover, with Arteta telling the press he views his substitutes as “finishers” and that they could be more important than starters in games, there is an incredible opportunity for the dynamic attacker to rebuild his reputation.

Ultimately, while fans have every right to doubt Martinelli’s future at the club given the last few seasons, his role as an impact player could save his Arsenal career and see him have a significant impact this season.

Arsenal lost a homegrown Madueke for £0, now he's "one of the world's best"

The world-class talent would make Arsenal far more dangerous.

Mumbai Indians won the big toss at Wankhede Stadium, and decided to field first in the so-called El Clasico, in IPL 2025. MS Dhoni, the CSK captain, said the dew had already set in, which made it a no-brainer to chase.A day after the 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi dazzled for Rajasthan Royals as the youngest player to play the IPL, Chennai Super Kings handed out a debut to Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre, now their youngest player at the age of 17 years and 278 days. It was also a T20 debut for Mhatre, who is yet to play T20s for his domestic team Mumbai. He made a big impression with 458 runs at an average of 65.42 and a strike-rate of 135.5 in his debut season in Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic 50-over tournament.Mhatre replaced Rahul Tripathi, who has averaged 11 and struck at under a run a ball this IPL. CSK resisted the temptation of blooding in the former MI player, Dewald Brevis, whom they drafted in mid-season. Interestingly, they did name R Ashwin in their possible Impact Players. If Ashwin were to be brought in to bowl later, Anshul Kamboj would be the casualty.Related

3 winners and 3 losers from the UCL this week as Konate struggles and Dier rattles Man City

Whilst game-week one gave us a taster, game-week two truly signalled the start of the drama in the Champions League. We saw VAR controversy, upset players and a timely reminder as to why Paris Saint-Germain are European champions even with a weakened line-up.

The French giants gradually picked Barcelona apart and eventually found their reward to make it two from two on Europe’s top stage. The same can’t be said for Liverpool and Manchester City, however, who failed to pick up where they left off. That said, out of Pep Guardiola and Arne Slot, it is the latter who will be most frustrated after suffering back-to-back defeats in all competitions.

So, in a week full of many twists and turns, who stands out as our biggest winners and losers in the Champions League?

Winners: Dier rattles Man City and Hojlund sparks Man Utd regret

Winner: Rasmus Hojlund (Napoli)

It’s a familiar story for Manchester United, isn’t it? Whilst the Red Devils watch on from outside of European qualification and a long way away from even considering Champions League football, their former players continue to thrive elsewhere. Last season, it was Scott McTominay. Now, it is Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.

The Napoli forward has already scored three goals in five games for the Italian giants – seven fewer than last season’s end total – and rounded off a fine evening in the Champions League with a brace against Ruben Amorim’s former side, Sporting Club.

What truly rubs salt in the Man United wounds is the fact that Hojlund, Anthony Elanga and Marcel Sabitzer – all former players – picked up the Man of the Match award for their current clubs in the Champions League this week while the Red Devils continue to struggle.

Winner: Goncalo Ramos (PSG)

Trying to get into that PSG frontline may well be the toughest task in European football. It now even includes a Ballon d’Or winner in Ousmane Dembele. But that’s not stopping Goncalo Ramos from knocking on the door of Luis Enrique’s frontline, desperately fighting for his place.

The Portugal international was at it again in the Champions League. After 19-year-old Senny Mayulu earned a starting place over him before scoring PSG’s equaliser against Barcelona, it was up to Ramos to emerge from the bench to find the winning goal and make a claim for his place once again.

Netting his third goal of the season and his second in as many Champions League games, Ramos continues to be one of the most underrated forwards in European football.

Winner: Eric Dier (AS Monaco)

A Bundesliga winner, versatile defender and now among Bernardo Silva’s football foes, Eric Dier is putting together quite the CV these days. The former Tottenham Hotspur star was accused of diving by the Man City midfielder to earn Monaco’s late penalty, which he converted to draw his side level, but insisted that there was contact in his post-match reaction.

After stealing a point from what seemed a certain defeat, both Monaco and Dier should be delighted with their latest Champions League outing. As for Man City, it’s yet another slip from what has become an increasingly-vulnerable side in the last 12 months.

Losers: Flick's high-line exposed and VAR steals headlines again

Loser: Hansi Flick (Barcelona)

A high-line is a game of risk and reward. Ask Jurgen Klopp and he’ll say that it played a crucial part in Liverpool’s best-ever Premier League side. Guardiola will also provide a similar answer from a Man City perspective. But Barcelona aren’t enjoying the same dominance.

Once again, Hansi Flick’s backline were left exposed in the Champions League. It arguably handed Inter Milan a route to the final last season in a thrilling semi-final and it has just provided PSG with an early scalp in their first defence. The Spanish giants are unlikely to change and former star Thierry Henry didn’t hold back with his verdict.

The former Barcelona star said: “You cannot play in the Champions League with that high-line, I’m sorry. When you play against good teams, you’re gonna get exposed and that’s exactly what happened. Any well-timed run, you go through on goal.”

Loser: Ibrahima Konate (Liverpool)

An exasperating, dramatic start to Liverpool’s season has quickly turned concerning. Suddenly, the late winners have stopped coming and their defensive vulnerability has remained, with Ibrahima Konate’s performances playing a large part in that. The Frenchman was suspect in a 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace last weekend and struggled once again as Galatasaray shocked the Reds.

With the Frenchman’s contract coming to an end in less than 12 months and Real Madrid sniffing around, to say that his dip in form is poorly-timed would be an understatement.

Add on the fact that Arne Slot only has three senior centre-backs at his disposal and it’s clear that Konate must rediscover his best as soon as possible.

Loser: VAR

At risk of sounding like a broken record, it was another poor week for VAR in the Champions League. Galatasaray’s penalty, which was awarded after Baris Alper Yilmaz hit the deck following contentious contact from Dominik Szoboszlai, stood out as questionable on Tuesday night before Monaco’s late penalty against Man City caused more controversy.

Reports are also circulating that the VAR team chose the wrong frame to look at Ramos’ winning goal against Barcelona. New images show just how tight the call actually was in a moment that could have ended very differently.

Many believed that VAR’s introduction would eradicate refereeing mistakes or at least guide the headlines away from the referees. Years on, however, it is doing anything but.

Crocombe, Turner trade blows on day for fast bowling in Southampton

Hampshire blown away first up before knocking over Sussex’s top order in reply

Henry Crocombe helped sweep through Hampshire with a four-wicket haul•Dave Vokes/Hampshire Cricket

Henry Crocombe and John Turner demonstrated their winter work with Dale Steyn with whirlwind spells as 15 wickets fell on the first day at Utilita Bowl in the Rothesay County Championship.Fast bowlers Crocombe and Turner were part of the England Lions squad mentored by South Africa legend Steyn, and coached by England great Andrew Flintoff, over the winter.Sussex’s Crocombe, on his first appearance of the summer, claimed 4 for 27 – with his four wickets coming in 11 afternoon deliveries – to roll south coast rivals Hampshire for 154. In reply, Turner ripped through the Sussex middle-order with three scalps in nine evening balls as the visitors slipped to 83 for 5, before blocking their way to 110 for 5 by close – still 44 runs behind.Hampshire chose to bat on a very green surface, one which would prove to nip and bounce unevenly as the day progressed. Mark Stoneman only lasted four balls before he edged to second slip – the first of five Hampshire ducks. The rest of the host’s top order all got starts, but only Ben Brown would kick on.Fletcha Middleton, on the back of a match-winning 76 at Trent Bridge, oozed confidence with 34 and dominated a 43-run stand with Nick Gubbins. But he fell leg-before to Fynn Hudson-Prentice, before Tom Prest cramped himself for room and was caught at second slip for 18 and Gubbins was lbw to Jack Carson’s second delivery.Liam Dawson began with four, six, four off Carson, but post-lunch Crocombe came alive with a blistering spell. Crocombe hadn’t played so far this season due to a shoulder injury – which has dogged his recent campaigns – but following a return to fitness combined with Ollie Robinson rested with an ankle problem, he stepped up.A strong end to last season, having only made his first first-team appearance of the season in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup in July, earned him a place on the Lions tour to South Africa. He only played once, taking a tidy two-for.Here he sent Dawson’s leg stumps flying, before yorking Toby Albert first up. His hat-trick ball was a low full toss, but in his following over, he displaced James Fuller’s middle-stump with one that jagged back. His fourth wicket in 11 balls saw one rise off a length to take the shoulder of Kyle Abbott’s bat and leap to third slip.Brown looked unbeatable as he went to 50 in 98 balls, against the team where he spent 14 years, but there was little other resistance. James Coles polished off the tail by bowling Brad Wheal and Turner. In reply, Sussex’s openers weren’t allowed to settle, with Tom Haines pouched at first slip and Oli Carter caught behind. But Tom Alsop and Coles put on 63 runs without a great deal of worry before Turner did his best Crocombe impression.Having gone for 19 runs in his first 17 legal deliveries, Turner produced searing pace to take Alsop’s outside edge from just back of a length. The out-of-form Tom Clark was squared up to edged to the cordon, before Coles was castled attempting a booming drive. Turner had three wickets in nine balls to put Sussex in trouble.John Simpson, who was dropped first ball, barely played a shot in anger as he and Hudson-Prentice reached close without further damage, facing 94 balls in their stubborn partnership.
