RCB rout Royals for 59 to keep playoff hopes alive

Rajasthan Royals suffered a catastrophic collapse and were dismissed in 10.3 overs in Jaipur

Bishop: Seeing growth and understanding in Maxwell’s game

With their campaign on the line in Jaipur, Royal Challengers Bangalore ambushed Rajasthan Royals, smashing them by 112 runs to stay in the race for the playoffs. It was their largest margin of victory away from home and it did wonders for their net run rate: RCB are now in fifth place with 12 points and two games to go.Glenn Maxwell blasted a 30-ball half-century on a tough pitch, while Faf du Plessis and Anuj Rawat played contrasting support acts. Yet the biggest contributor to RCB’s win was their bowling, and the five wickets they took in the powerplay set up the Royals’ decimation for 59 – the third lowest total in the IPL.Wayne Parnell was in top form, picking up three of those wickets: Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson and Joe Root. He wouldn’t have played had Josh Hazlewood been fit, and his spell of 3-0-10-3 won him the Player of the Match award. While RCB can get to 16 points, the Royals can now only reach 14 if they win their final game, and their playoff hopes are extremely slim.RCB’s steady powerplayRoyals trusted their match-ups in the powerplay.Virat Kohli v Sandeep Sharma: seven dismissals, the most he’s got out to any bowler in T20s.Kohli v legspin: strike rate of 110. So it wasn’t a surprise to see three overs in the powerplay bowled by Adam Zampa and Yuzvendra Chahal.RCB hit only four boundaries in the first six overs, but Faf du Plessis and Kohli ensured they didn’t lose a wicket on a tricky pitch, scoring 42. Kohli was eventually caught off a knuckleball from KM Asif, for 18 off 19 balls.Glenn Maxwell scored a fifty off just 29 balls on a tough pitch•BCCI

Du Plessis drops anchor; Maxwell fliesMaxwell walked in at No. 3 and thumped his third ball, off R Ashwin, for a near 100-metre hit down the ground. In the next over, Chahal tried to bowl away from his hitting arc as Maxwell tried to outfox him by employing the reverse sweep. After two failed attempts, Chahal perhaps played on Maxwell’s ego by dangling the carrot for a third. Maxwell used the depth of his crease to slap a fierce cut to the boundary. This injection of momentum allowed du Plessis to drop anchor. After a lull – RCB didn’t score a boundary from overs 9.2 to 12.3 – Maxwell tore into Sandeep. The first of two boundaries was a reverse ramp over the wicketkeeper and the second was slashed over point. Maxwell then raised the tempo further by blasting Chahal into the stands to bring up a 30-ball half-century. And when Chahal went wide, Maxwell went wider to shovel one over the shorter leg-side boundary. The platform had been set. RCB stumble after du Plessis fallsRCB lost three wickets in six deliveries beginning with du Plessis in the 15th over, with Zampa taking out Mahipal Lomror and Dinesh Karthik in the same over. That meant that Maxwell had to delay the charge at the death, and when he eventually went after Sandeep, he was bowled trying to reverse sweep a yorker. At 137 for 5 in the 18th over, RCB were in danger of finishing poorly.Wayne Parnell picked up three wickets in the powerplay to derail the Royals•BCCI

Rawat comes to RCB’s rescueAnuj Rawat gave RCB the finishing kick in the final over by taking down KM Asif. Standing deep inside the crease to convert yorkers into half-volleys, he muscled two sixes and a four to end with 29 off 11 balls. RCB finished with 171, which was above par on a tough batting surface.Parnell’s powerplay punchFastest IPL fifty two nights ago. Two-ball duck today. Yashasvi Jaiswal drilled Mohammed Siraj to Kohli at mid-off to trigger a stunning collapse. Parnell was playing his first game since April 20 and he made the most of it, dismissing Buttler, Samson and Root inside the powerplay. Buttler was also out for a duck, slapping one straight to point; Samson was cramped for room and top-edged a pull; and Root was lbw playing all around a full delivery.Bracewell, Karn complete the routA niggle to Wanindu Hasaranga meant Karn Sharma got a game, but he was taken for three back-to-back sixes by Shimron Hetmyer. Ashwin was then run out by a nifty flick between the legs from the wicketkeeper Rawat, and Hetmyer holed out to long on for 35 off 19 balls. Bracewell returned to pick up his second wicket – Dhruv Jurel – and Karn made a strong comeback by taking the final two wickets to close out the game in the 11th over of the chase.

Sky Sports: Coventry & Lampard join race for "excellent" Europa League star

Setting their sights on summer reinforcements, Coventry City and Frank Lampard have now reportedly joined the race to sign a Europa League defender alongside a number of Championship rivals.

Coventry looking to win Championship transfer race

Coventry have emerged to become one of the surprise packages of the season under Lampard. When they sacked Mark Robins in favour of hiring the former Premier League midfielder who struggled in charge of Chelsea, Everton and Derby County, the decision unsurprisingly stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Four months into his tenure, however, Lampard has proved the doubters wrong.

A recent 2-0 defeat against Derby County may have ended an impressive run, but Coventry still have their sights set on a shock play-off place with just nine games left to play in the Championship.

Away from the action, meanwhile, those behind the seasons at the Sky Blues have reportedly turned their attention towards the transfer window. According to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Coventry have now joined the race to sign Tyrese Asante from Maccabi Tel Aviv this summer following the defender’s impressive season.

Featuring in both Champions League qualification and the Europa League throughout the current campaign, it’s no surprise that Coventry have been joined by the likes of Hul City and Cardiff City in pursuit of Asante.

Tyrese Asante for Tel Aviv against Ajax.

Of course, given their current position in the top six, Coventry’s transfer plan could yet receive a major boost if they earn a place in the play-offs and then secure shock promotion.

"Excellent" Asante could commence Coventry rise

If promotion doesn’t happen this season, then Coventry’s form ever since Lampard’s arrivals suggests that they’ll be ones to watch next season, especially if Asante arrives. A defender capable of playing European football, there’s no doubt that the 22-year-old would be an impressive coup for the Sky Blues as they potentially build towards the Premier League.

Praised for his “excellent” numbers and “strong” passing by football consultant Kai Watson in February, the Dutch defender is only just getting started at 22 years old and a move to Coventry would only accelerate his potential.

Lampard got a taste for the incomings that he could welcome at Coventry in January, signing Matt Grimes and Jamie Patterson. Now, when the summer arrives, he could receive his best addition yet in the form of a defender full of talent in Asante.

Liverpool in contact for right-back who's far better defensively than Trent

Following the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold is closing in on a free move to Real Madrid, Liverpool have reportedly made contact with a defender who could replace their academy graduate.

Liverpool make first move to replace Trent

It’s seemed inevitable since the rumours first emerged and Alexander-Arnold didn’t instantly put pen to paper on a new Liverpool deal. Now, however, the right-back’s move to Real Madrid is slowly but surely becoming a frustrating reality for all those at Anfield, who could be seeing another academy graduate choose the Spanish giants.

It’s undoubtedly a major blow for the Reds, but one they must get over quickly and turn their attention towards avoiding the same fate with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s current deals. Losing Alexander-Arnold is a blow. Losing Salah and Van Dijk on top of that would be an undeniable disaster.

With that said, the champions-elect have at least already reportedly made their first move to replace their Madrid-bound star. According to reports in Spain, Liverpool have now made contact to sign Oscar Mingueza from Celta Vigo this summer.

Slot intensifies £20m Liverpool move as Trent now close to Real Madrid deal

The Liverpool star looks destined to leave…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 25, 2025

The Spaniard, who spent over a decade in Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, reportedly has a release clause worth just €20m (£17m) and would quickly become a bargain for those at Anfield if he went on and replicated Alexander-Arnold’s quality.

Replacing one of the Premier League’s best right-backs of all time will be a near-impossible task, but if Arne Slot adapts his system in a way that no longer makes that role a creative outlet then the job of Mingueza or another option will become that much easier this summer.

"Great" Mingueza is more reliable than Trent

Whilst there’s no denying that the good has always outweighed the bad in the case of Alexander-Arnold, he has proven to be a defensive liability throughout his Liverpool career. And that’s an area in which Mingueza would offer instant reliability over the Anfield star, offering Slot a far safer option down his right-hand side.

That safety in possession compared to the more extravagant Alexander-Arnold could become a blessing in disguise for Liverpool, as Slot looks to create a side capable of passing sides into submission. Praised for a “great” season at Barcelona in 2021 by football scout/writer Jacek Kulig, Mingueza could now get the opportunity to take his biggest step yet back to the top of European football.

At 25 years old, the Celta Vigo star should be at the peak of his powers and ready to take Anfield by storm. Available for a reported £17m, the Spaniard is certainly one to watch when the transfer window swings open this summer.

Neser looms as World Test Championship reinforcement amid Hazlewood's tight turnaround

Australia will need to confirm a 15-player squad to face India by Sunday

Moody: Warner stayed on course despite the noise around him

Michael Neser could yet bolt into Australia’s World Test Championship squad with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh facing tight timeframes to be available for the showdown against India.Hazlewood (side) and Marsh (adductor) came home early from the IPL with minor niggles and though both have since returned to bowling, and there remains confidence they’ll be ready for the Ashes, the clash with India at The Oval on June 7 may come too soon.Australia will effectively need to make a call by Sunday (May 28) when their 15-player squad for the final has to be submitted under the ICC rules for the final. Robinson cleared to join England squad after ankle scan reveals no damage

Labuschagne fills his boots, Neser and Abbott make Ashes case, Green's brilliance extends his IPL stay

Hazlewood is the more significant of the two names and CA said earlier in the week that scans on his return to Australia had shown no damage to the side. However, with six Tests in less than two months there would be a risk of pushing him too soon.”We knew when he went to the IPL that everything would have to go perfectly on the back of the Achilles setback in India and this stage everything is good,” Australia coach Andrew McDonald told . “But it will have to go perfect for him to be part of that World Test Championship final and available.””We feel it’s almost like a home summer. We usually pick four quicks and travel around and add players when we need. We’ve got Michael and Sean [Abbott] over there and feel they can be added in at any time depending on if new information comes to us.”Neser, who picked up his impressive Sheffield Shield form in his county stint with Glamorgan, where he has scored 311 runs and taken 19 wickets, would provide cover for both players although Abbott brings a similar all-round package.Michael Neser currently has two Test caps•Getty Images

Both Neser and Abbott will join the Australia squad when they reach London late next week and begin training following a bonding camp in the northwest of England.Neser’s omission from the original squad was the most debated call, but he and Abbott have had the benefit of playing competitive cricket in recent weeks. McDonald said that Neser’s continued excellence did not surprise him and, perhaps significantly, made mention of his batting returns which have seen him average 38.66 since the start of the last Australia season.”He’s really pressing to be genuine allrounder, probably not a top six allrounder, but definitely a No. 7 or 8,” McDonald said.Overall, however, and particularly with a view to the first Ashes Test on June 16, Australia have fewer injury concerns than England who have lost Jofra Archer, face a nervous wait on James Anderson and are uncertain how much captain Ben Stokes will be able to bowl. They did, however, get a boost with a positive update on Ollie Robinson.”You don’t know how much to read into the information coming out around the injuries, how significant they are, but there is no doubt that they’ll be having more conversations around where their injury list is at than we are,” McDonald said. “It’s always nice when you haven’t got those moving parts and it’s quite settled going in.”Cameron Green’s format switchCameron Green will face increasing demand on his time•BCCI

In terms of allrounders, the key name for Australia remains Cameron Green. He lit up the IPL earlier this week with a maiden T20 century to carry Mumbai Indians into the playoffs which meant his stay at the tournament is extended.McDonald acknowledged the quick turnaround between formats will be a test for Green. He found it tricky last season after the T20 World Cup, although in that case had had precious little batting time, and there were already signs he was adapting when he returned from his injury layoff during the Test series in India.”The thing for me he’s adaptable, he’s a man for all conditions, he’s always engaged in the game whether with bat, ball and in the field…he’s high-end talent and is showing the world what he’s got,” McDonald said. “The challenge for Cam now is as he starts to become a three-format player is how he focuses [on] that, shifts between formats, and he’s going to have another challenge in front of him going deep into the IPL finals to get ready for the World Test Championship match. So that will be a challenge for him, but he’s a fast learner and every hurdle he’s got over so far.”Glancing into the not-too-distant future, managing Green across three formats will become one of McDonald’s key challenges.”We’ve declared our hand with his entry into T20 cricket last year and now what’s done in the IPL would suggest he’s tracking to be a three-format player for us. Then it’s finding the balance within all of that,” he said. “You can’t be everything to everyone and they’ll be some series where he needs to be managed like all the other players when they play three formats. The demand’s going to go up then clearly there’s other leagues that will want access to him at certain times. It’s going to be a bit of a juggling act but he’s got a good head on his shoulders and we’ll be able to work with him.”
