ECB open to private investment in the Hundred as Thompson values competition at £1 billion

Board chair says English game must be “strategic” about opportunities to bring in funding

Richard Thompson, the ECB’s chair, has valued the Hundred at over £1 billion (US$1.2 billion) after confirming the ECB has received an offer for its newest competition, and anticipates others will be in the offing.Thompson suggested that reports of the offer, initially revealed by Sky News as a £400 million bid from Bridgepoint Group, were “exaggerated”. The London-listed buyout firm was supposedly interested in a 75% stake in the competition, which seems unworkable at present given Thompson’s insistence that any agreement would have to ensure the ECB retained overall control of the competition. He also confirmed the first-class counties were keen on the reported figure.Speaking in Rawalpindi on Saturday having arrived to take in England’s first Test in Pakistan for 17 years, Thompson, who took up his post in August, could not go into details but reiterated the need to consider any proposal with English cricket’s best interests at heart.”We have received an offer, and I can’t comment on the actual offer,” he said. “I would not be surprised if there are other offers. There’s a feeding frenzy in broadcasting rights of tournaments at the moment, so that reality of more interest in the game is bound to materialise. I’m determined we’re not going to be opportunistic about this, we’re going to be strategic. The tournament’s only two years old. Clearly there’s a value in it, and we expected there to be interest. Let’s see how things play out.”We understand there’s value in the tournament and teams, there’s lot of other untapped value in the game that goes beyond the Hundred as well. We shouldn’t fixate over one thing. What we won’t do is be opportunistic. We’ll think things through, and understand that we won’t sell the game short. Lucknow Super Giants, one team in the IPL sold for a billion. One team. That should establish a benchmark of value. I think we’ve got a long way to go before we do something. If offers want to be made, they will be made.”We can’t disclose what was in the offer, but it wasn’t what it appears to be,” he added. “We’ll continue to talk to the county chairs about this, and if this was an absolute game-changing offer that would wipe out the debts of English cricket, of course we would look at it. But it isn’t.”I don’t think people are giving money away at the moment, so I’d be surprised if someone came along with an offer you’d have to stop the press for and reflect on. But who knows?”Team ownership is the most likely first port of call for investment, and IPL owners are circling having bulked their portfolios with investment in other franchise competitions, such as the CPL, IT20 and SA20. One connection regularly mooted is between Mumbai Indians and Oval Invincibles, especially after Mukesh Ambani, owner of Mumbai Indians, attended a Hundred match in the 2022 season along with Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who is an owner in Major League T20 having supported cricket’s expansion in the US.Thompson, previously a Hundred-sceptic when chair of Surrey, has been open to private investment since taking the post. But the importance of the ECB remaining in control of its product is vital, not least for county cricket and the summer at large.”I think the point is we’re the only country that plays in the northern hemisphere [during summer],” Thompson said. “I think the ECB would need to think very long and hard if we were to sell four or five weeks of the English summer to a third party. We all know how precious the schedule is at the minute. To look at the tournament and think we would sell four or five weeks of the summer would be a huge decision to take.”Incoming CEO Richard Gould, we opposed the Hundred for two sets of reason. I’m not going to be a hypocrite. We’ve come in and seen the success. It’s reached audiences the Blast wasn’t reaching, people are talking about Alice Capsey the way they would not be doing if she hadn’t made the impact she made on the Hundred, and women’s cricket wouldn’t have broken through the way it has. And we’re getting unsolicited offers in two years. So all these things mean we’ve got to take a competition like this very seriously.”Clearly it’s created a lot of tension in the sense that one of the reasons I opposed it in the first place was because I could see three domestic competitions, more international cricket, was causing so much challenge in the schedule – a fourth isn’t going to make matters easier.”That’s absolutely what has played out, and we need to find a way of somehow working with four competitions, where the Hundred doesn’t succeed at the expense of the Blast, one doesn’t cannibalise the other, and they can co-exist together. That’s going to take some doing, but we’ve got to find a way, because the Hundred is here to stay. We’ve signed that deal to 2028, and people are making offers. It’s creating an impact in two years that we didn’t expect to happen, but it’s also created some challenge and stress as well.”

Chelsea join huge race to sign £15,000-p/w youngster after sending scouts

Joining a busy race ahead of the summer transfer window, Chelsea have now reportedly set their sights on signing a Champions League gem for Enzo Maresca after already sending their scouts his way.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues rarely find themselves out of the transfer headlines and this summer is likely to be no different. Even after splashing the cash last season, those at Stamford Bridge are still on course to miss out on Champions League qualification and could turn towards further reinforcements as a result.

Among those already reportedly on their radar is Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The former Manchester City gem has been on the rise ever since leaving the Etihad and could now follow in Jadon Sancho’s footsteps by returning to the Premier League. Of course, the irony is that the Dortmund star would likely replace Sancho in Enzo Maresca’s strongest Chelsea side.

It’s not just attacking reinforcements who have seemingly caught the attention of the West London club, however. According to The Boot Room, Chelsea have now joined the race to sign Lamine Camara from AS Monaco this summer in what is set to be a hectic pursuit for his signature.

As the summer approaches, Chelsea are reportedly joined by Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Liverpool – among others – in the race to sign the young central midfielder.

BlueCo ready to finalise Chelsea deal to sign new £12m South American gem

He’s one for the future…

Having sent their scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action for themselves, Chelsea could flex their financial muscles once again when the summer transfer window swings open to welcome a rising star who already has 23 caps for Senegal.

"Excellent" Camara could complete Chelsea's midfield

With Enzo Fernandez dipping in and out of form and Romeo Lavia struggling for fitness once again this season, the one constant in Chelsea’s midfield has been Moises Caicedo, who has been better than ever. But he can’t be asked to perform the job of three players on a consistent basis and the arrival of Camara would put an end to that at Stamford Bridge.

Playing 10 games less, the £15,000-a-week star has managed to keep up with Caicedo in most departments and has particularly excelled in possession, completing over 100 progressive passes.

Praised for his “excellent” ability to switch play by analyst Ben Mattinson, it should come as little shock that Europe’s best clubs are forming a queue to secure the Monaco star’s signature this summer.

Lamine Camara for Aston Villa.

Just who emerges to lead that line remains to be seen, but if Champions League football does prove to be a factor then Chelsea could face an uphill battle. With just 11 Premier League games remaining, the Blues have got plenty of work to do in the race to finish inside the top four.

Dhull named captain of Delhi Ranji team, Ishant also in squad for first two games

Less than a year after he captained India Under-19 to the World Cup triumph, 20-year-old Yash Dhull has been named captain of the Delhi Ranji team with 100-Test veteran Ishant Sharma and IPL star Nitish Rana in its ranks.Dhull will be one of the youngest ever to captain Delhi and that too in his ninth first-class game after a promising start in the Ranji Trophy last season. In eight games that he has played so far, Dhull has scored 820 runs, including four hundreds, at an average of 74.54.It is understood that DDCA brass wanted to carry out the tough transition from this season and Dhull, by virtue of being one of the most consistent performers and someone with leadership acumen, has been handed over the reins.”Somewhere we had to draw the line, we need to carry out a transition,” a source close to the DDCA selection committee told PTI. “Pradeep Sangwan, the last year’s captain, had to be dropped as he hasn’t been measuring up.”The squad has been selected for the first two games, against Maharashtra from December 13-16 and against Assam from December 20-23.Ishant, too, is also part of the squad for those two matches. “Ishant has also been given a couple of games. Liverpool could seal biggest sale since Coutinho by axing Klopp’s £60m star

Liverpool have gone from strength to strength under Arne Slot, with the fight for the Premier League title beginning to look like a procession.

13 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, the Reds are no doubt loving life with the Dutchman at the helm, but this is a team assembled by Jurgen Klopp, and FSG need to get it right in the transfer market this summer to maintain their current level of dominance.

That’s not to say Slot is riding on his predecessor’s coattails; he’s an elite-minded tactician who has defied expectations in establishing Liverpool as Europe’s team to beat in 2024/25.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Alas, signings will be needed during the off-season, for Liverpool are expected to part with several first-team stars.

Liverpool's most expensive sales of all time

Some great players have departed Anfield for huge money.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 9, 2025 The players who might be leaving Liverpool

It’s March. Liverpool are flying high. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk still haven’t extended their contracts on Merseyside, and are out of a job in just four months.

Transfer guru David Ornstein revealed recently that the industry consensus is that Salah and Van Dijk will stay. However, Trent’s future is far more worrying given Real Madrid have a vested interest in bringing him to La Liga.

Other Redmen could be on the move. Most prominently among them is Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay striker simply isn’t kicking on. It’s a shame, he’s affable and entertaining, but 6 goals from 36 games this season isn’t good enough for an £85m club-record striker.

Darwin Nunez for Liverpool

However, he’s not the only one, with Joe Gomez potentially on the move after a prospective switch to Newcastle United broke down last year.

While Gomez hasn’t enjoyed the most productive of seasons under Slot’s wing, his sale would make signing a new centre-back imperative this summer, for Jarell Quansah would be the only recognised option at the club outside of regular starters Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Elsewhere, Liverpool will need to figure out what to do with Luis Diaz, a valued and impactful member of the team but perhaps part of that crew of sellable stars.

Why Liverpool should sell Luis Diaz

Only Salah (30) and Cody Gakpo (16) have scored more goals for Liverpool this season than Diaz, who has equalled last season’s tally of 13 having played over 1,000 fewer minutes.

Luis Diaz in action for Liverpool vs Wolves

It’s a measure of Slot’s tactical brilliance, and how he has effectively insinuated himself and his teachings into this talented Liverpool squad.

Diaz, 28, has been at Liverpool since January 2022, leaving Porto for an initial £37m to join Klopp’s cause, and he’s had his ups and downs, but there’s no question he’s one of the most valuable members of the outfit, crucial as the title charge continues.

However, he’s about to step into the penultimate year of his £55k-per-week deal and it may be more practical to cash in while his stock is raised, especially since Barcelona retain a long-standing interest.

Were Liverpool to sell both of Diaz and Nunez, FSG would bank quite the pretty penny. For sure, both players would need replacing with first-class forwards, but Anfield has become one of the leading platforms for a player’s career growth over the past decade, and this is something transfer targets will consider with disc-like eyes upon receiving the call.

By the time Diaz’s current contract expires in 2027, he will be 30 years old. There’s no doubting his ability, having been hailed as “one of the best wingers in the world” by Liverpool U21 star Luca Stephenson.

But is he indispensable? For a forward of Diaz’s talent, his numbers leave something to be desired, especially from a creative standpoint. He’s a “livewire” – as dubbed by journalist Peter Hall – but there are yawning holes to his game.

Stats via Transfermarkt

As a reference point, Diaz’s ostensible predecessor, Sadio Mane, scored 120 goals and supplied 39 assists from 269 appearances for Liverpool, equating to a rate of 0.61 goal involvements per game.

His goals this season have been crucial to Liverpool’s success. Indeed, Diaz has selflessly played in an unconventional focal striker’s role for the good of Slot’s side, but now decisions must be made pertaining to his long-term future.

According to CIES Football Observatory, the world’s leading football statisticians, the Colombian is currently worth about £60m in the modern market – a figure that FSG would surely consider were it lodged during transfer season.

Luis Diaz and Arne Slot

Should Barcelona be willing to act on their intrigue and bring him to Camp Nou, it would be Liverpool’s biggest sale since allowing Philippe Coutinho to head off for pastures new.

In fact, perhaps it could have a similar effect. After all, Liverpool would be selling a silky South American player to the Spanish giants for a hefty sum – with the banked funds then directed toward new impactful signings.

It’s unlikely Liverpool will claim the same sort of money as they did when La Blaugrana last came calling, with a £142m proposal presented to the Anfield side for their Brazilian playmaker, who left just as Klopp’s dynasty was taking off.

The money collected was redirected to Van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker, making a telling comment on Liverpool’s ability to recognise an opportunity and act on it.

Though Coutinho was the bright spark during that backwater period between the gripping 2013/14 campaign and Klopp’s arrival, it quickly became apparent that he wasn’t expendable, for Liverpool went on to lift all the biggest honours with a complete and rounded team.

With 28-year-old Diaz heading into the penultimate year of his contract, some important conversations must be held.

Maybe Liverpool won’t want to sever too large a chunk from their frontline with Nunez seemingly headed for the exit, too. However, if the right opportunity comes along, this would be the perfect time to cash in for a lucrative figure, with Diaz then able to leave as a proud Premier League champion.

Hundred to begin at Trent Bridge, four-week window confirmed

Oval to host eliminator as fixtures for tournament’s third staging are confirmed by the ECB

Trent Bridge, the home of men’s reigning champions Trent Rockets, will host the opening fixtures of this year’s Hundred on August 1, with the final once again scheduled for Lord’s, on August 27.As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, this year’s tournament will played in a reduced four-week window, to avoid a clash with the summer’s men’s international schedule that has restricted the availability of many of the tournament’s marquee players in its previous two seasons. To enable this shortened window, all of the rounds will be played as men’s and women’s double-headers – a change from both 2021, when the tournament opened with a standalone women’s fixture at the Kia Oval, and 2022, when the women’s event was delayed by the concurrent Commonwealth Games – while there will be eight “double-double-header” days, on which four matches will be played. In a further change to the 2022 schedule, the eliminator will be played in London – at The Oval – on the eve of the Lord’s final, following criticism from, among others, Manchester Originals’ head coach, Simon Katich, who felt his team was hampered in last year’s event by having to make a late-night journey from Southampton following a thrilling win in their eliminator against London Spirit. The Hundred’s partnership with BBC Music Introducing will be continued for the 2023 event, meaning a diverse range of artists and DJs will once again provide in-game entertainment, while ticket prices are set at £5 for juniors aged 6-15, free for children five and under, and adults starting from £10.For the first time in the competition’s history, both the men’s and women’s events will be preceded by a draft, which is due to be held on Thursday, March 2. Deadline day – the day on which retained players are confirmed across both competitions – is set to be Thursday, February 16.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“Lifting the trophy with my Oval Invincibles team-mates last year was a career highlight that I’ll never forget,” Lauren Winfield-Hill, the England batter, said. “The Hundred is such a thrilling competition to be a part of. The support we had at every game was just phenomenal and I can’t wait to get back into action to defend the title this year.”The first ever women’s draft is definitely going to bring an exciting new element to the game and it will be interesting to see how the teams shape up for another fierce competition.”Dawid Malan, last year’s leading run-maker in the men’s competition, and a reigning champion with Trent Rockets, added: “I have a lot of great memories from the Hundred 2022. The atmosphere in every ground was really enjoyable and winning the title at Lord’s was very special. This summer is shaping up to be massive for cricket in England and Wales and I’m really looking forward to the third year of the Hundred, playing with some of the best players in the world in front of big crowds.”Related

Simon Katich suggests 24hr turnaround between eliminator and final 'needs to be looked at'

The Hundred to be played in four-week window in August 2023

Sanjay Patel, the tournament’s managing director, said: “I am incredibly proud of the impact the Hundred has already had on cricket in England and Wales after just two years, providing a new format that has seen more families and a diverse new generation of fans getting into the game.”As we enter year three, we’re looking forward to building on that momentum and putting on another unforgettable summer of world-class cricket action and entertainment that will continue to appeal to new and existing audiences alike.”Beth Barrett-Wild, head of the women’s tournament, and of female engagement at the ECB, added: “We are in the middle of a really special period of time for professional women’s sport, with exponential levels of growth happening across every measure of engagement, from broadcast viewing figures to match day attendances.”Since launching in 2021, the Hundred has had a transformational impact on women’s cricket, propelling the women’s game into the mainstream, and making household names of our brilliant female players.”

33 y/o Sheffield Wednesday "game-changer" will exit in summer, says Palmer

Sheffield Wednesday will be willing to let an attacking “game-changer” leave this summer, according to an update from former Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Sheffield Wednesday struggling for playoff finish

Danny Rohl’s side have endured a difficult period in their season, having looked like challenging for a place in the Championship playoffs a few weeks ago.

Instead, Wednesday have lost their last three matches in the league, not to mention four of their last five, dropping down to 13th place in the table in the process.

Last Friday’s 2-1 loss at home to Sunderland was another damaging defeat, and it means that the Owls are now seven points adrift of sixth-place West Brom, highlighting how much work needs to be done in the remaining 11 matches.

Regardless of where Rohl’s men finish once the season is done and dusted, fresh faces need to arrive in the summer transfer window, while others will be moved on to pastures new.

Sheffield Wednesday "game-changer" backed to leave

Speaking to Football League World, ex-England international Palmer backed Michael Smith to leave Sheffield Wednesday at the end of this season:

“Now the question is about the likes of Josh Windass, who will be out of contract in the summer (although there is a one-year option in his deal) and Michael Smith. I think he’ll be disappointed that he wasn’t allowed to go to Wrexham and I understand why Danny Rohl wouldn’t have wanted him to go, but he had a chance to go to Wrexham on what would’ve been a two or three-year contract. It’ll be interesting to see.

“I’d be very surprised to see Smith at the football club next season. Given his age and everything else, I think Danny will be looking to bring in a younger player, somebody who can score consistently at Championship level, although Smith has had an impact when he has played or come off the bench this season. Still though, I’d be very surprised to see Michael Smith signing a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday.”

This summer definitely feels like the right time for Wednesday and Smith to part ways, even though Darren Moore hailed him during their time working together at Hillsborough, saying:

“Michael Smith is a game-changer today. The quality showed at the end of it, and that’s what Michael is. He was in the right place at the right time and that’s what quality strikers do.”

Now 33 years of age, Smith is out of contract with the Owls at the end of the current campaign, and given his age, it makes little sense in him being handed an extension, considering his best days are arguably behind him.
