Over the last five years or so, Arsenal have been completely transformed as a football club.

While there have been changes in the boardroom and a new willingness to spend from the owners, much of this change seems to have stemmed from Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has turned the team into consistent Premier League title challengers on the pitch and, in turn, an incredibly attractive destination for some of the game’s biggest stars.

However, on top of that, he’s also overseen an improvement in how the club sell in the market, with the sale of a player he once highly rated serving as an excellent example of this evolution.

Arteta's notable sales

Before we get to the player in question, it’s worth examining some of the other brilliant sales completed under Arteta’s management, starting with Eddie Nketiah.

The former academy gem was once an important part of the Spaniard’s squad and was even handed a bumper £100k-per-week contract in the summer of 2022.

However, after two seasons of underwhelming displays, he was finally moved on in the summer.

What makes his departure so remarkable is that despite him clearly being surplus to requirements at the Emirates, Crystal Palace still agreed to pay a whopping £30m for him, and while he did score against the Gunners on Wednesday night, his return of two goals and one assist in 14 appearances isn’t great.

Another brilliant sale completed under the Spanish manager was fellow academy graduate Joe Willock, who joined Newcastle United on a permanent deal for around £25m in the summer of 2021.

The English midfielder actually joined the Magpies on a six-month loan that January and looked electric, scoring eight goals in 14 games.

However, in his first full campaign in the North East, he could only muster up a tally of two goals in 31 games, and as things stand, he has a fairly mediocre haul of 16 goals and seven assists in 119 appearances for the Toon, making the money Arsenal received for him look excellent.

However, there’s been another academy gem sold under Arteta’s reign who netted the club even more money than Willock and Nketiah, someone the manager once thought very highly of.

So, to get straight to the point, the player in question is none other than former academy star Folarin Balogun.

The American international was once an incredibly exciting prospect at Arsenal, so much so that Martin Keown compared him to Ian Wright and Andy Cole after scoring in a Europa League game in 2020.

However, it was in the 22/23 season, when on loan with Ligue 1 side Stade Reims, the “unbelievable” gem, as dubbed by former manager Will Still, truly announced himself to the wider footballing world.

In just 39 first-team appearances, he scored 22 goals and provided three assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.56 games.

Unsurprisingly, this led to considerable praise from Arteta, who told the media that there was “something special” about the striker, although whatever it was, it still wasn’t enough to see him become the manager’s starting number nine upon his return.

So, that summer, when AS Monaco came in with a mega £34m offer, the North Londoners bit their hand off, and in the season and a bit since, it has looked like a great decision to do so.

For example, while he was still effective in France last season, a haul of eight goals and seven assists in 32 games is hardly earth-shattering.

Likewise, his tally of three goals and one assist in ten appearances this season wouldn’t be enough to see him start for the Gunners.

Ultimately, Balogun is a very talented footballer and someone who looks more than good enough to enjoy a great career in one of Europe’s top five leagues, but it feels doubtful that he’ll become the world-beater some thought he would.

Therefore, it was brilliant business from Arteta and Arsenal to get £34m for him last season, especially as he probably wouldn’t have played much of a role had he stayed.

The appointment of Lee Carsley has been mooted, too, but he has rejected the chance to take charge after Corberan, having recently enjoyed a caretaker stint with England. Now, an update has dropped regarding a different candidate.

New West Brom manager update on Luke Williams

Taking to X on Thursday evening, Baggies reporter Cox claimed that West Brom do not see Swansea City manager Luke Williams as an option to replace Corberan at the Hawthorns despite rumours of a move.

Williams could certainly have been a strong choice for the Baggies, considering the 44-year-old has shone in his managerial career to date, not least guiding Notts County back into the Football League, going up against Wrexham during a relentless National League title race back in the 2022/23 season.

Meanwhile, Carlton Palmer once stressed the importance of them keeping hold of their boss, prior to him moving to Swansea, saying: “Notts County sit fifth in League Two, and it was vital that they kept hold of the man who guided them out of the National League. The decision conveys a potent message about the importance of loyalty in a sport that is often overshadowed by financial consideration. Let’s hope the owners remember this in difficult times in the future which there are sure to be at Notts County.”

It is refreshing to see West Brom not rushing into a decision over their next manager, however, and if they feel Williams isn’t the right fit for the club, it is only right that they don’t take a gamble on him.

According to a recent report from respected journalist David Ornstein, Arsenal have maintained their strong interest in Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

In fact, Ornstein claims that Arteta would like the club to sign the European champion in this window, but the finances involved would make that incredibly difficult to do.

For example, the talented winger has a release clause in his contract currently worth €60m – £50m – which adjusts for inflation, and on top of paying that in one go, the North Londoners would have to accommodate the player’s enormous wage, which supposedly stands at around £165k-per-week.

In all, it would be an incredibly costly transfer to get over the line, but given Williams’ ability and potential, it is one worth pursuing, especially as he’s been compared to Gordon.

How Williams compares to Gordon and why Arsenal should sign him

So, before we get to the reasons why Arsenal should be looking to sign Williams this month, let’s examine this comparison to Gordon and where it comes from.

Well, it primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the fourth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Spaniard over the last 365 days.

We can get a better understanding of how this conclusion was reached by looking at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, expected assists, shots, progressive passes, crosses, goal-creating actions, carries and more, all per 90.

With that said, there are other reasons the North Londoners should be looking to sign the Copa del Rey winner, perhaps most notably, his output.

Now, it would be fair to say that his tally of two goals and five assists in 24 appearances this season is somewhat underwhelming, but we saw just how effective the Spanish international could be last year.

For example, in just 37 appearances last season, the “unbelievable” live-wire, as dubbed by ex-professional Mike Grella, scored eight goals and provided 19 assists, meaning he maintained a sublime average of a goal involvement every 1.37 games – just imagine someone that effective on the opposite flank to Bukayo Saka.

Lastly, something the Gunners have been calling out for over the last season and a half is a left-winger who can, and often does, take on and beat their man, which is precisely what the Pamplona-born game-changer does.

كان ليفربول قد حسم لقب الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز بشكل رسمي، عقب فوزه على توتنهام بخمسة أهداف لهدف في الجولة الرابعة والثلاثين يوم الأحد الماضي.

ويقدم محمد صلاح موسمًا مثاليًا تحت قيادة المدرب آرني سلوت، حيث يتصدر قائمة هدافي الدوري الإنجليزي برصيد 28 هدفًا، كذلك يتصدر قائمة الصانعين برصيد 18 أسيست.

The home side ended the third day strongly placed, but batting fourth will remain a tricky proposition

McDonald: Australia well and truly in the game

Stumps Sri Lanka’s experienced Test batters and their newest member combined to earn them a handy lead on the third day in Galle as they aim to square the two-Test series. Dinesh Chandimal made his 13th Test hundred and Kamindu Mendis marked his debut with an innings full of classy touches, the pair joining for a fifth-wicket stand of 133, to ensure Australia endured a long day in the field.Overall, Sri Lanka’s batters from No. 2 to No. 6 all contributed a half-century or better and it was the first time five of them had scored fifties or more in the same innings against Australia. With a lead of 67 and two days remaining, Sri Lanka have the chance to put considerable pressure on Australia’s second innings, although the loss of Kamindu and Niroshan Dickwella in the final session dented hopes of a more substantial advantage, and batting last could yet be a fraught task.Chandimal brought up his century, his second against Australia, from 195 balls when he dabbed Nathan Lyon into the off side, punching the air has he ran through. It was an innings largely compiled with low-risk batting, except for the occasional moment of outright aggression such as an early six against Lyon and launching Mitchell Starc over mid-off.After a collectively poor show in the first Test, notwithstanding the challenging conditions, Sri Lanka’s senior batters responded. Not for the first time, however, Australia were left to regret burning their reviews. When Chandimal was on 30, he edged Starc behind but it was given not out by Kumar Dharmasena, and Australia had no recourse to the third umpire having used up their reviews shortly before the 80-over mark: first, they went up for an lbw against Angelo Mathews but there was a thin bottom edge, and then for a catch at silly point against Chandimal, but there was only pad.Another opportunity came their way when Kamindu was on 43 and advanced at Lyon, was beaten by the turn, and Alex Carey couldn’t gather the stumping chance. Carey had earlier missed an almost impossible stumping chance offered by Chandimal on 10, then late in the day a le-side one against Ramesh Mendis. There were not many options Pat Cummins did not use through the day, including periods of short bowling, 7-2 off-side fields to try and stem the scoring rate, changes of ends and the part-time spin of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne. Lyon had a huge workload, clocking up 56 overs, and briefly left the field for treatment for cramps. Late reward came his way when Dickwella, a batter who could have taken on a tired attack, clubbed to mid-on.Chandimal had arrived in the third over of the day when Lyon made an early breakthrough by trapping Kusal Mendis lbw with one which spun sharply from outside off. It came shortly after an almost-identical appeal had been declined by Michael Gough with it remaining umpire’s call on height by the narrowest of margins. Chandimal immediately made a statement by taking on Lyon’s attacking line with consecutive shots through the off side for four and six as he and Mathews set about building their 83-run stand.The partnership was broken shortly after lunch when Mathews got an inside edge into his pad attempting to work Starc to the leg side, which popped out into the on side and was smartly held by Labuschagne at short leg. It did not prove costly, but replays showed that he, too, could have been lbw on review against Lyon shortly before he was out.In Starc’s next over, Chandimal survived his edge behind, but by and large he and Kamindu were untroubled for lengthy periods. Kamindu, who holds a first-class batting average of 61, looked at ease almost from the start, getting underway with a back cut against Lyon, and was not flustered when the quicks went short at him. Some of his timing was exquisite, with a straight-bat punch through midwicket, a square drive off Cummins and an off-drive against Lyon especially eye-catching.He fell attempting to slog-sweep Mitchell Swepson out of the rough, which opened the door for Australia late in a long day, but he had done enough to suggest he will be hard to leave out for the series against Pakistan which follows. First, though, there are two huge days ahead for Sri Lanka. To take a drawn series after what happened in the first Test, and from the strong position Australia found themselves early in this match, would be a significant achievement.
