Test rankings: Bumrah No. 4 in bowlers' list, Karunaratne at career-best No. 5 among batters

Jason Holder returns to the top spot for allrounders following the Antigua Test against England

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Mar-2022Jasprit Bumrah and Dimuth Karunaratne made significant gains in the ICC Test rankings after the two-match series between India and Sri Lanka. While Bumrah’s maiden five-for at home, in the second Test in Bengaluru – and eight wickets in the match – helped him move up six spots up to No. 4, Karunaratne’s determined fourth-innings knock of 107 pushed him up three spots to a career-best No. 5 in the batting charts.*Bumrah left behind the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, James Anderson, Neil Wagner and Josh Hazlewood on his way up, his eighth five-wicket haul in Tests leading India to a 2-0 series sweep and rendering Karunaratne’s fighting effort on a testing Chinnaswamy track in vain.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Jason Holder reclaimed the top spot among Test allrounders after Ravindra Jadeja briefly displaced him following his 175 not out and nine wickets in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali. Holder’s all-round contributions of three wickets, and 45 and 37 not out with the bat, ensured West Indies hung on to draw the first Test against England in Antigua.Holder’s team-mate Nkrumah Bonner, who hit 123 and 38 not out in a Player-of-the-Match performance, gained 22 places to rise up to No. 22 in the batting rankings, while Shreyas Iyer’s twin half-centuries in Bengaluru helped him jump 40 spots to No. 37. Iyer was the Player of the Match in the game following knocks of 92 and 67.*

Forget Amad: 8/10 Man United star was "monstrous" against Man City

Manchester is Red in 2024, with Manchester United securing their second win of the calendar year in four games over their bitter rivals Manchester City.

As far as Manchester derbies go, the 195th edition was not the highest standard, given both sides’ poor form of late, but United piled the misery onto the Citizens after a phenomenal comeback.

It is fair to say that for much of this game, it was not one for the neutral. The first half did not have many key moments to note until Josko Gvardiol got his head on a deflected Kevin De Bruyne cross. His looping effort flew into the back of the United net leaving Andre Onana rooted to the spot.

United failed to get themselves back into the game despite seeing lots of the ball in the second period. Ruben Amorim’s side had a key chance through Bruno Fernandes, but he could only lift his chipped shot over Ederson wide.

However, it was the man lovingly dubbed United’s “Portuguese Magnifico” who equalised in the 88th minute. Amad Diallo expertly won a penalty, which the Red Devils skipper converted coolly to draw things level.

Just seconds later, it was Amad who gave United the lead, latching onto the end of Lisandro Martinez’s pass and converting from a tight angle to win United the game. He was certainly a standout player against City.

Amad Diallo's performance in numbers vs Man City

It has been a phenomenal rise to the top for Amad under Amorim. In five Premier League games under the Portuguese boss, he has four assists and a goal, which, as we know, was the winner against City.

Of course, he played a huge role in both strikes, winning the penalty that Fernandes converted. After getting on the end of a misplaced backpass from Matheus Nunes, he waited for the midfielder to try and win the ball back and went down under the pressure of his challenge.

The goal, meanwhile, was spectacular, meeting Martinez’s ball with a superb touch around Ederson, and firing home from a narrow angle.

Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst was full of praise for the attacker, who played as a number 10 against the hosts and gave him a 9/10 for his efforts. Indeed, Amad’s stats on the night show just how well he played. He won 7/10 ground duels, completed five of eight dribbles and had a 92% pass accuracy.

There is no doubting the fact that the 22-year-old was fantastic throughout the game, and his attacking performances were a key reason United won. However, the Red Devils defended with heart, and Harry Maguire played superbly.

Harry Maguire's performance in numbers vs Man City

It has been a really impressive resurgence in a United shirt for Maguire, who struggled to get into the team in Erik ten Hag’s first season at the club. His outing against City was fantastic and epitomised the defender.

Battling against Erling Haaland, Maguire was a rock and the Norwegian striker gave him little trouble. The Englishman had some impressive stats, winning 75% of his duels, three tackles and making five interceptions. On the ball, the United number five was classy, completing 92% of his passes.

Luckhurst was certainly complimentary of the defender. The journalist gave Maguire an 8/10 rating for his efforts, noting he had ‘little hassle’ from Haaland, explaining he was able to ‘dominate him’ in the second 45 minutes. Further praise was forthcoming from journalist Alex Turk, who described the England international as “monstrous”, while the manager even reserved very special words for his centre-back.

Like Amad, Maguire performed admirably against the Citizens. He was commanding and colossal at the back, keeping quiet a man with 13 Premier League goals already this term. It was a fantastic defensive showing from United’s number five.

Man Utd sold "one of the best", now he's outscoring Amad in the PL

Manchester United may have made a mistake in allowing him to depart Old Trafford.

James Anderson and Saqib Mahmood are available for Lancashire’s home County Championship match against Gloucestershire this week. The pair bowled at Lancashire training this morning and, as centrally contracted players, were cleared by the ECB to play in the Division One fixture starting at Emirates Old Trafford on Thursday. The ECB also made Stuart Broad available for selection by Nottinghamshire, with the club due to announce their squad tomorrow to travel to Durham, although the , for whom Broad is a columnist, reported that he would delay his first outing of the domestic season for another week, targeting Notts’ subsequent three fixtures at Trent Bridge and Lord’s. Both grounds are venues for the opening Test series of the English summer, against New Zealand, with Broad hoping to make his return to the England side then.Broad and Anderson were high-profile omissions from England’s ill-fated Test tour of the Caribbean last month, with the visitors losing 1-0 to compound the fallout from their 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia.England’s interim managing director of men’s cricket, Andrew Strauss, had said the West Indies trip represented an opportunity for other seamers to take on leadership roles in the absence of the vastly experienced duo, but two of those players – Mark Wood and Chris Woakes – have been sidelined by injury. Wood underwent elbow surgery after breaking down during the first Test and is out of action until at least May, while, according to the , Woakes is expected to return for Warwickshire next month amid a setback after returning from the Caribbean with knee and shoulder complaints.Related

Where next for England now that Joe Root has resigned the Test captaincy?

Saqib Mahmood turned down IPL offer to 'push red-ball credentials' with England

Following England’s performance against West Indies, Joe Root resigned as Test captain last week, and Rob Key was appointed to take over permanently from Strauss, who only intended to fill the role short-term. England are yet to name Root’s replacement, and employ a head coach to replace the sacked Chris Silverwood but, before his resignation, Root stated publicly that Anderson and Broad had a route back into the England team, starting with early-season wickets in the County Championship.Anderson said a week ago that he had had no contact with anyone in the England set-up since his omission, other than the physiotherapist, and Broad wrote in his weekend newspaper column that he had given no thought to suggestions he could take over as Test captain “because firstly I am not currently in possession of a shirt within the England Test team and my focus is very much on changing that by taking wickets for Nottinghamshire over the next few weeks”.”In fact, I would argue we are in a fairly unique position as far as selection for the Test team goes right now in that there are only two players whose names you could write in pen on the scorecard,” Broad added. “One of them is Joe Root, the other is Ben Stokes – and one of them isn’t going to be captain for the first Test of the summer against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 2 because he has just given the job away.”Mahmood recently revealed he had turned down an offer to become a replacement overseas player in the IPL to push his Test credentials by playing in the Championship, having made his debut on the Caribbean tour. He was rested for Lancashire’s 10-wicket win at Kent last week.Ollie Robinson, who was part of England’s West Indies touring party but didn’t play because of a back problem, is not available for Sussex in this week’s Division Two game at Worcestershire due to illness, which is not Covid-related.Meanwhile, West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach has flown home after scans confirmed he had suffered a hamstring injury during the second day of Surrey’s innings win over Hampshire on Friday. Roach had been due to play in Surrey’s first five red-ball matches.”I’m gutted that my time at Surrey has come to an end due to a slight injury but I want to thank the whole Surrey family for the love and care they have shown,” Roach said on Twitter.

Liverpool could sign £69m Salah heir who’s "more talented than Ronaldo"

It feels like things are starting to come to a head down Anfield Road. Contractual concerns have descended on Liverpool’s season like a brooding cloud, and time is now running out.

Admittedly, such issues have failed to disrupt the brilliant football being played by Arne Slot’s men, who are four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand, also first-placed in the Champions League and awaiting a Carabao Cup last-eight tie against Southampton.

It’s all rather exciting, not least because this is starting to look like a campaign that, at the very least, presents an incredible opportunity to win the biggest silver prizes.

But skipper Virgil van Dijk can talk to suitors from overseas in just three weeks; as can Liverpool’s homegrown vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Trent, Salah, Van Dijk

And so can Mohamed Salah, whose own contract, set to expire at the end of the season, has attracted the most noise. He’s been vocal, but recent reports suggest that all is not lost on this pivotal front.

Mohamed Salah's contract update

When David Ornstein speaks, the Premier League’s legion of fans listen. The Athletic correspondent has recently revealed that FSG are accelerating talks to extend the stay of, perhaps, Liverpool’s three biggest superstars.

By the time he is enjoying pre-season ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, the Egpyt star will be 33. There is an understandable hesitance on FSG’s part.

But Salah’s astounding potency simply cannot be overlooked. Having played 21 matches this term, the right winger has scored 15 goals and added 12 more assists. It’s Ballon d’Or-winning form, to be sure.

Liverpool need to accept that Salah leaving is a possibility. Should that unthinkable scenario become a reality, a prize-winning replacement will need to be brought in.

Liverpool eyeing Salah replacement

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are thick in the battle for Juventus prodigy Kenan Yildiz, who the Serie A side would consider selling for a mammoth €80m (£69m) figure.

Yildiz, aged 19, has been among the finest breakout stats in Italy over recent years, with Liverpool joined by Manchester United, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund in sending scouts to watch him in action.

A versatile forward, Yildiz would be a worthy successor for a superstar like Salah, albeit one who would need time and patience to give rise to the height of his potential powers.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Kenan Yildiz could be a star at Liverpool

Yildiz might still be a teenager but he’s already earned a range of experience in Italy’s top flight, racking up nine goal contributions from 42 matches since leaving Bayern Munich’s youth set-up for Juventus.

Though he more frequently cuts inside from the left wing, Yildiz has been said to be “almost perfectly two-footed” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and it might be that as he develops, the young Turk becomes Slot’s starring focal frontman.

Although this is a player with the quality to replace Salah, he may actually assume the positional role of someone like Darwin Nunez, whose continual struggles for goals suggest that he won’t be the star number nine over the coming years.

But then again, the Turkey international isn’t someone who exists solely to score goals himself; instead, he brings a multi-dimensional technical arsenal that suggests he will become one of the silkiest and most dynamic forwards in Europe, should he continue to place sufficient blocks for his development.

As per FBref, the nifty teenager ranks among the top 7% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 6% for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 13% for shot-creating actions, the top 3% for progressive carries and successful take-ons and the top 1% for tackles per 90.

This is quite a lot of data to consume, but succinctly, it reveals a many-layered approach to Yildiz’s craft that is coated in natural-born prolificness.

Indeed, the up-and-coming talent has notched five goal contributions from just 11 starts in the Serie A this season, while also averaging 1.1 key passes, 1.6 dribbles and 5.0 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore.

It’s been such an exciting rise that Yildiz has even been compared against players of the highest calibre.

The Turkish native’s former coach, Sokyan Baskar, has actually claimed that his protegee is “more talented than Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Whether that is actually the case is dubious, but it does make for an interesting comment on the player’s capacity for success at the very highest level of the game.

And anyway, a natural liking for a header perhaps suggests that the 6 foot 2 ace is endowed with some of the athletic qualities that have shaped CR7 into one of the greatest sporting figures of his generation through a long and storied career.

Salah may well pen an extension to his lucrative Anfield deal, but the plain fact is that the 32-year-old will skid onto a downward curve at some point, and it would be prudent to land a young gun with the qualities to take his mantle.

Yildiz wouldn’t be expected to hit the same staggering heights from the offing, but he could find great success in learning from one of the greatest Premier League players to do it, before stepping up as Liverpool’s main man down the line.

Ben Foakes faces concussion tests after sickening collision with Jamie Overton

Keeper suffers second freak injury in a year as Surrey keep pace with Somerset

Matt Roller23-Apr-2022

Ben Foakes left the field after a collision with Jamie Overton•Getty Images

Ben Foakes was helped off the field by medical staff after a sickening collision with Jamie Overton and will undergo concussion tests ahead of the final day of Surrey’s Championship match against Somerset at The Oval.Foakes dived to his right while taking a catch to dismiss Tom Banton off Reece Topley’s bowling, while Overton dived to his left at first slip and made contact with Foakes’ head with his right shoulder.Sam Curran ran over to celebrate but immediately signalled to the dressing room as Foakes lay on his back and covered his face with his left arm. Surrey’s medical staff rushed on with a stretcher during a ten-minute delay, though Foakes managed to walk off the field with help from Alex Tysoe, the lead physio.”He’s under observation with the physios,” Azhar Mahmood, Surrey’s assistant coach, said. “Concussion tests are going on and hopefully he’ll be fine tomorrow. It was shoulder to neck. I think there was a cut. There was some blood coming out of his ear but I’m not sure if it was internal or outside.”Ollie Pope took the gloves for the final hour of the third day. Jamie Smith, who was left out of this game, could come into the side on Sunday as a concussion replacement depending on the outcome of Foakes’ tests. This was the second time in a year that Foakes has suffered a freak injury at The Oval, after he tore a hamstring while slipping in his socks on the dressing-room floor following a Championship game against Middlesex last May.With Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler rested after their involvement in the IPL, Foakes had been in line to make a home Test debut against New Zealand. Instead, he was ruled out for four months, only returning to Surrey’s first XI for their final Championship match of the season, a high-scoring draw against Glamorgan. The timing of his latest injury will be a concern to England, with the first Test of their summer – again against New Zealand – just under six weeks away. Foakes has started the season with 240 runs for twice out across three appearances and is the incumbent wicketkeeper after taking the gloves in the Caribbean.Foakes’ injury appeared to disrupt Surrey’s rhythm as they looked to restrict Somerset in their second innings. Topley had taken three wickets in seven balls – including that of Banton, their last recognised batter – before the stoppage in play but Surrey went 11.5 overs without one under the floodlights. But Jack Leach chopped on off Overton before Jordan Clark struck with the final ball of the day, leaving the game in the balance heading into Sunday. Surrey were two bowlers down with Curran limited to 15 overs in the match by the ECB as he returns to fitness and James Taylor suffering from back spasms, but Overton and Topley sparked a collapse of six wickets for 64 runs late in the day.Somerset’s lead was 225 heading into the final day thanks largely to an 89-run partnership for the third wicket between Banton and Tom Abell, both of whom made fifties. Abell had managed 109 runs in his last 14 first-class innings heading into this game but made 203 for once out in the match, scoring freely and hitting boundaries on both sides of the wicket before edging behind off Ryan Patel’s medium pace. For Banton, this was a significant innings, only his second of the summer after missing the first two rounds of games due to a fractured finger. He started last year opening the batting, then became a specialist No. 7 and finished the season out of the side after averaging 18.84, but vowed in pre-season that he would “come back as a new player this year” following technical tweaks over the winter. He was occasionally troubled by Overton, edging his first ball wide of the slip cordon for four, but dug in for just over two hours and played confidently through the covers and off his pads. It was notable that he came in at No. 4, ahead of James Hildreth, having enjoyed most of his red-ball success in the middle order in his breakthrough season in 2019.Surrey had been bowled out for 308 soon after lunch, with Peter Siddle taking four of the last five wickets to finish with 6 for 51 from his 26 overs in his 200th first-class game.In his first appearance for seven months after a stress fracture of the lower back, Curran had threatened to make the first hundred of his professional career, scoring fluently and lofting Leach for a straight six, but ultimately fell 20 runs short.
