Left in 2019: Pardew’s £1.5m Newcastle signing is outscoring Gordon & Isak

Newcastle United are unrecognisable from the team that struggled against the pit of the Premier League table when Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce at the helm.

The sharp-witted tactician might have inherited a team with newfound financial might, but many a lesser mind would have fallen at the first hurdle, for resurrecting St. James’ Park was a herculean task whichever way you looked at it and he exceeded expectations.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

The transfer strategy has been, more or less, on point. The frontline, for example, has gone from strength to strength under the English manager, with Alexander Isak joining for a club-record £63m fee in 2022 and enjoying prolific success since.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, has made incremental improvements since signing from Everton in January 2023, forcing his way to Tyneside in a move worth £45m.

Newcastle have one of the finest attacking partnerships in the Premier League. Gordon was a revelation on the left wing last season, winning the club’s Player of the Year and being heralded for his “unbelievable” performances by Bruno Guimaraes.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

Both, four matches into the current Premier League campaign, have scored one goal. They have yet to fully click into gear but this doesn’t really matter: Newcastle have ten points from 12 and look like a force once again after last year’s injury-ruined effort.

Interestingly, though, there’s a former Magpie who’s flying higher than both goalscorers combined this season. Indeed, Ayoze Pérez has been spectacular over in Spain.

Ayoze Pérez at Newcastle

Newcastle signed Perez from Tenerife for a paltry fee of £1.5m in June 2014, with Alan Pardew’s Toon outfit welcoming a talented young forward who had posted 16 goals and seven assists across 34 matches in Spain’s second tier the year before.

He would go on to perform for Newcastle for five years, to varying degrees of success, finishing with a total of 48 goals and 17 assists across 195 appearances. Tenacious and versatile, he featured across a range of roles and was hailed for his “unbelievable” work rate by Matt Ritchie.

Spread out season by season, that up-and-down form is highlighted. There was so much to like about Perez, but he was not a bona fide superstar and the pretty penny collected for his sale was quite something in the end.

His time at the club came to an end following the departure of his boss and countryman Rafa Benitez, with Leicester City seeing an opportunity and swooping in to sign the Spaniard on a £30m deal.

One of the brighter sparks in a gloomy era, Perez’s departure indeed presented United with quite the paycheck – the figure collected from the Foces equated to a profit of 1900%.

Say what you will, but this is an exceptional piece of business from pre-PIF United. It’s a massive figure to recoup after paying so little in the first place. Now, there’s only warmth at seeing him thrive in La Liga.

Ayoze Pérez is flying this season

Perez has been brilliant of late. Last year, he scored nine times in La Liga for Real Betis, starting 29 matches, while also bagging twice in the Europa League.

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

His efforts last season even saw a call-up to the Spanish squad for the 2024 European Championship. Now, we all know how that went; those wounds are still fresh so let’s not dig into the grit of Ayoze’s tournament.

In any case. The 31-year-old’s return to national action and indeed victorious campaign bears testament to his cultured take on the later phase of his career, restoring his shooting touch with some gusto.

As per FBref, the 5 foot 10 talent ranks among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 15% for tackles and the top 5% for blocks made per 90, showcasing a tough and determined style to complement his natural-born finishing ability.

Now a Villarreal player, he’s enjoyed some big moments since arriving at the backend of August, notching three strikes from only five games in the Spanish top flight. What’s more impressive is that Perez has only started two of those five fixtures, completing 63% of his dribbles and 80% of his passes too, as per Sofascore – highlighting his technical soundness and elite athleticism.

As you can see above, the nature of Perez’s strikes makes a telling comment on his big-game aura. The timing of the goals has ensured that the Yellow Submarine have claimed vital points in their bid to finish at the top of the table.

Perez’s three-goal return so far for Villarreal means that he has outscored both of Newcastle’s principal goal threats this season, also equalling Gordon’s total goal record for Newcastle – 14 strikes – since the start of last season, despite the fact that the England international completed his transfer in January 2023.

While Newcastle will certainly not rue the sale of a player who left for a handsome fee, there is perhaps an element of ruefulness that he was not involved under Howe’s wing. Fashioned into a centre-forward in the experienced stage of his career, Perez has enjoyed 82 career outings as a right winger, and given his potency, he might have been the perfect player to finish Newcastle’s current frontline with a flourish.

Newcastle star was worth £10m when Howe arrived, now his value's risen 200%

The talent has developed rapidly in a short space of time under Howe.

Bavuma: South Africa looking for opener, sixth bowling option ahead of T20 World Cup

de Kock’s opening partner remains far from finalised; captain says a “seaming allrounder will come back into the mix”

South Africa have yet to make a firm decision on who will partner Quinton de Kock or who their sixth bowling option will be for the T20 World Cup later this year. With approximately seven fixtures left (one vs West Indies, three vs Ireland, and three vs Sri Lanka) before the tournament, they have limited time and matches to settle on a strategy. That the team is still in the experimental stage of things is down in part to the disruption to the cricketing calendar and the continued postponement of a T20I series against India which was initially meant to happen last August and now won’t take place at all. While that series would have kicked off South Africa’s preparations for the World Cup, selection calls around the team for the ongoing tour of the West Indies have also raised some questions. Why, for example, have they included four opening batters in their squad? Or two seam-bowling allrounders, neither of whom have played in the West Indies series so far? And how can they ensure they have enough big-hitters in the middle-order as well as enough bowlers to cover for someone who may have an off day? At the moment, they don’t seem to know.”In terms of combinations, we are looking at who can partner Quinny at the top. Reeza (Hendricks) is the guy at the moment and we believe he has done it well. David (Miller) is our seasoned finisher. He has done it for many years but unfortunately at the moment he is battling with form, as are a number of batters,” Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s limited-overs captain, said after their defeat in the fourth T20I.”I’m sure a seaming allrounder will come back into the mix. Where we find ourselves at the moment is that we are looking for someone who can effectively play that sixth bowling role. If you look at a guy like Aiden (Markram), he gives you more than just the bowling option. He is someone we see as versatile in terms of his batting position. He can bat at the top as well as batting in the middle and he has been given that opportunity now, albeit in tough conditions. From a bowling front, that (the sixth-bowler) we haven’t nailed down.”Related

Finals pressure for South Africa in T20Is decider

What’s clear so far is that South Africa want to play at least three of their five openers: Hendricks, Bavuma and Markram. That means Janneman Malan, who has played 20 fewer T20Is than Markram and whose average is similar, is unlikely to be able to force his way back in at the moment. It also means that Bavuma, who started off his T20 career as an opener, is being used at No.3, where he has not come off yet. With Markram in the middle order, there is no space for either Heinrich Klaasen, Kyle Verreynne or anyone else South Africa may want to be there, except maybe Faf du Plessis. But that would create the same problem of only five bowling options that South Africa had in the first two matches against West Indies, so it will be interesting to see if du Plessis, the former captain, fits back in.Although South Africa can’t say for sure if Markram is a long-term sixth-bowling option, they are intent on finding out and used him to open the bowling in the last match with less than ideal results. Markram conceded 20 runs, which Bavuma identified as putting South Africa under pressure immediately and though it’s an isolated incident, it remains a cause of concern.Reeza Hendricks made 2, 17, 42, 17 partnering Quinton de Kock in the combination in the T20Is against West Indies•AFP/Getty Images

Seemingly, a more secure choice would be to include a proven allrounder in Markram’s spot but South Africa have left both Wiaan Mulder and Andile Phehlukwayo on the bench. Whether they will opt for Dwaine Pretorius, who missed this tour after contracting Covid-19, remains to be seen. Then, there’s the consideration that they already have an allrounder in the team in George Linde, who has earned his place with the ball but has the ability to do it with the bat. It’s possible that South Africa don’t want to appear to have a softer middle order with two allrounders at Nos. 6 and 7, especially as they have no choice but to start the lower order at No. 8.Their three-pronged pace pack of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi were exceptional in the Tests but have not reproduced that form with the white ball. Bavuma put that down to conditions. “Our bowlers, in terms of aggression and pace, we have always thrived on bowling on quick, bouncy wickets. That’s a skill set that becomes null and void in these type (West Indian) of conditions,” he said. “Maybe we have been found wanting in that department.”While Nortje has bowled some back-of-the-hand slower balls, South Africa overall have not adjusted to the surfaces as well as West Indies and Ngidi, in particular, has been expensive. Apart from Phehlukwayo and Mulder, South Africa have Beuran Hendricks, Lizaad Willams and Sisanda Magala (though he is currently battling an ankle injury) in reserve and have not used any of them yet. Bavuma indicated Williams may come into contention for the series-deciding fifth and final T20I, after an impressive debut earlier in the year. He was their leading bowler against Pakistan in the series in April. The only position not under some scrutiny is Tabrazi Shamsi’s. The world’s leading T20I bowler has operated as both strike bowler and container, and his form means it’s unlikely Imran Tahir, who has not retired from the shortest format, will don a South African shirt again. That, unless Tahir is afforded the opportunity and South Africa opt to field a four-spin attack in the UAE. They have the personnel in Tahir, Shamsi, Linde and Bjorn Fortuin. Imagine that.

Obertan arrived instead: Newcastle nearly signed star who’s now worth £150m

In 2024/25, Newcastle United would view a poor campaign as one that concludes without a concerted shot at silverware and without qualifying for next year’s European competition.

How things have changed. Eddie Howe has been the architect of something special since his appointment shortly after the lucrative PIF takeover.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

But we need only cast our mind back across the past 15 seasons and view two Toon relegations from the Premier League – with plenty of near misses and disappointing finishes throughout.

Oh sure, Newcastle have deeper pockets than once before, but the errant strategy has also been swatted away. High-profile signings of players such as Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon have hit the mark.

It wasn’t always the case, with money spent hastily and efforts to land top targets falling short. The transfer of Gabriel Obertan is one such case – just wait until you hear who could have been signed instead.

Why Newcastle signed Gabriel Obertan

It was the summer of 2011, and Newcastle were about to be treated to a season of Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba-fuelled wonder, so it wasn’t all doom and gloom.

But not everything worked out all dandy. That same summer, Obertan moved to Newcastle from Manchester United in a deal worth £3m. The 22-year-old had featured 21 times for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils after emerging from the youth ranks, but he scored just one goal and patently needed a fresh lease of life.

Newcastle struggled to give him the conditions he needed – and vice versa, in a way. But it didn’t work out in any case, with Obertan suffering injury misfortune and failing to grow into the player that Ferguson thought he might become, having once hailed him as an “exciting prospect”.

And it was luckless fitness dips that proved to form the crux of Obertan’s woes at St. James’ Park, for he was scarcely found in the starting lineup in the Premier League and failed to hit the consistency that would have earned him the right kind of form.

Indeed, Obertan scored three goals and added ten assists across 77 matches for Newcastle, meaning that he technically cost the club £1m per goal.

Grim reading, especially when considering the track that Newcastle took to secure the Frenchman’s signature. Mike Ashley’s Magpies were unable to cash in on their wayward venture due to his issues, and thus he trundled through his contract and departed on a free in 2016, having not returned to the Premier League since.

It could have been so different, for Newcastle could have signed Mohamed Salah instead…

When Newcastle missed out on Mohamed Salah

It’s a well-known name on the English scene. Salah has been the veritable lifeforce of Liverpool’s frontline throughout an illustrious point in their history, notably winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup under Jurgen Klopp’s wing.

One of the Premier League’s finest forwards, Salah, aged 32, has scored 160 goals and supplied 72 assists across 267 matches in England’s top flight, principally for Liverpool but also, briefly, for Chelsea.

The Egypt international is widely regarded as a “world-class” player, as Klopp states below, but he really could have enjoyed his rise and rise as a Magpie – just think of the difference it could have made over the past decade.

It dates back to the winger’s humble beginnings in his homeland, with Al Mokawloon, one of Egypt’s most prestigious outfits. Newcastle had noted his potential and wanted to bring him across the seas and allow him to cut his teeth in the Premier League.

There’s no word of mouth here, the news came from the man himself, who said back in 2011: “Newcastle will soon make an official offer to sign me for one season. I don’t think contractors will refuse to let me play in the English Premier League. It’s a dream for any player to play in one of the strongest league competitions in the world.”

It, obviously, didn’t work out. Salah would move to FC Basel and hone his craft in Switzerland before catching Chelsea’s attention and transferring to the Premier League for an £11m fee in 2014.

But just think of what could have been. Salah has become one of Europe’s most devastating players at Anfield and actually emerged as the Saudi Pro League’s top transfer target in 2023, with Al Ittihad willing to pay £150m for his services – this was rejected by Liverpool who clearly valued him even higher.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Newcastle have had to live with the fact that they opted against signing Salah way back when. Let’s face it, the young talent was awestruck by the prospect of donning the black and white stripes and would have boarded the first plane had Ashley’s outfit followed up their interest with a bid.

He signed for Basel in 2012 for an undisclosed figure that can’t have been much more than was paid for Obertan at Newcastle one year earlier, so it would take a brave football fanatic to stake a convincing argument as to why, in hindsight, the Magpies decided not to swoop.

Anyway, it’s all water under a bridge. Newcastle are on the up and are targetting new levels of success once again this season – deals like this one matter little now, but it’s a stark reminder not to deviate from the thriving strategy of modern times.

Mithali Raj: When young players like Rodrigues go through bad form, senior players back them

Mithali Raj has said she doesn’t heed criticism around her strike rate and instead focuses on shouldering the responsibility bestowed by the team management in terms of playing the anchor role in the Indian ODI side.”I do read the criticism about my strike rate but as I’ve said earlier also, I don’t seek validation from people,” Raj, the India Test and ODI captain, said after sealing a 220-run chase and her side’s thrilling four-wicket win on Saturday in Worcester with an unbeaten 75. “I have played for a long time, and I know that I have a certain responsibility in the team. Mithali Raj says Sneh Rana a key allrounder for India's future

“When you’re chasing a target, you pick your bowlers, you pick the length, and you pick the areas. And because I am in good flow, I know I need to make the best use of me in the middle. In a way the batting unit revolves around me – that’s the job that’s been given to me by the coach.”I look to not get bogged down because somewhere I do know that the top order is already in the dugout and it was important for me to understand the situation how I can manoeuvre and try to get the match as close as possible with the batters who are yet to come and the batters that I had in the middle. And I guess I need to give credit also to Sneh Rana because that partnership was very, very crucial. She kept her calm, which is very important in such situations.”Picking up her third straight fifty in the ODI leg of the multi-format series, Raj steered India to victory in the final over of the chase after putting on two fifty stands. The second of those was with No. 7 Sneh Rana, whose vital 22-ball 24 earned her praise from Raj.”For me batting has always been a role-play in the team,” Raj said. “The sort of role that is assigned to me over the years is of taking the responsibility of the batting unit and play throughout. And that’s something I’ve always done.”Today also was one of those days where I could plan my innings. Chasing gives me a better picture of building an innings along with the other batters in the middle and I am able to control the game. I think that really worked for me. And having young girls in the side it helps to guide them when you’re in the middle to also sort of help them understand the situation and how to play in these conditions. It works well that way.”En route to her half-century, Raj surpassed former England captain Charlotte Edwards as the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket. She went past Edwards’ tally of 10,273 with a four off Natalie Sciver in the 24th over of the chase.Mithali Raj – “Because I am in good flow, I know I need to make the best use of me in the middle”•Getty Images

“I think the way things have gone, it wasn’t an easy journey,” Raj said, reflecting on her storied 22-year-long international career. “It had its trials and challenges. I’ve always believed that these trials always have a purpose, and there were times when I wanted to give up for various reasons but something kept me going and here I am, 22 years of international cricket but the hunger to score runs for India has never dried up.”[…] I know I have a few months in the run-up to the World Cup, and there’s certain areas, certain dimensions to the game that I would like to add to my batting. I look forward to working on those areas.”Raj, who retired from T20Is in 2019, had before the England tour said the 2022 ODI World Cup would be her swansong. With only tours of Australia and New Zealand so far scheduled before next year’s world tournament, the ODI assignment in England which concluded on Saturday may have been her last one in the country.”Obviously, before the World Cup we don’t have an England tour but I have always enjoyed playing in England against England, one of the quality teams on the world stage,” Raj, who made her international debut in England in 1999, said. “They say English conditions are always difficult, but the bulk of my runs I’ve scored on this soil. I’m just grateful that each time I come here…”There have been times when I’ve toured England from a bad form and I have scored heavily coming to England. So, I am happy the way I started in 1999, and today it’s come a full circle. I just look forward positively for the tours I am yet to play that I continue this form into those series as well.”

Thunder tie thriller with Sunrisers, thanks to Kate Cross-Hannah Jones death bowling

Sunrisers can no longer qualify for Finals Day but Thunder can still top Group B

ECB Reporters Network28-Aug-2021

Kate Cross proved crucial in the death overs•Getty Images

Kate Cross and Hannah Jones’s death bowling helped Thunder pull off a thrilling tie with Sunrisers after Cordelia Griffith had swiped her maiden Charlotte Edwards Cup fifty.Griffith had put Sunrisers on course for victory with an outstanding 63 in their run-chase of 125. But with nine needed from the last two overs, England fast bowler Cross bowled Griffith and only conceded four runs.Spinner Jones had Florence Miller caught off the fourth ball of the final over before Jo Gardner could only scuff a single from the last ball to give the competition its first tie.It means Sunrisers can no longer qualify for Finals Day next Sunday, while Thunder can still top Group B and reach the Ageas Bowl showpiece if they beat neighbours Northern Diamonds on Monday and Western Storm lose.Related

Maia Bouchier, Charlie Dean ruled out of first T20I vs New Zealand, Emma Lamb called into England squad

Griffith was forced to be patient against an exemplary Powerplay from the Thunder’s bowling attack – with only 23 runs coming off a slow pitch and Naomi Dattani departing. She soon caught up though with a four and a six with two swings down the ground in the seventh over, before another lusty blow over long-on gave the run-rate a much-needed boost.A third six, this time dispatching a full toss over midwicket, followed quickly by a cut to the boundary brought up the half-century partnership with Grace Scrivens – Griffith had dominated with 38 of the runs. Her own fifty came up with a worked single into the leg side in 40 balls.Scrivens joined in the fun with a pulled maximum off Cross but was caught on the long-on boundary to end a 79-run stand, with 23 runs still required.Griffith made the hosts favourites again with two fours through the covers but Cross and Jones’ heroics meant the two sides shared the points.Having been put in, Thunder’s innings was made up of two substantial partnerships – Georgie Boyce and Daisy Mullan’s 51-run opening stand and 49 put on by Ellie Threlkeld and Cross – punctuated by spells of accurate and tight bowling.Boyce and Mullan – standing in for Emma Lamb, who had been a late call-up for England, for just her third appearance – made things look easy with 48 runs off the Powerplay. But the good start faltered as Boyce picked out long-on and Emily Thorpe entered the attack to have Mullan caught at mid-on and Piepa Cleary mistiming to midwicket – the leg-spinner claiming 2 for 17.Cross and Threlkeld rebuilt again with both striking three fours, and the former clubbing a six straight back down the ground. However, both were bowled in the dying embers of the innings.
