£120,000-a-week Tottenham player "certain" to leave; Levy wants to cash in

Having already shown the door to the likes of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, Tottenham Hotspur are set to get ruthless once more, showing the door to another player.

Tottenham transfer news

For a long time, it looked as though Spurs were prepared to enter the new season without a replacement for Harry Kane for the second campaign running, but the arrival of Dominic Solanke quickly eased those fears.

Saudi side eyeing late move for £70k-p/w Tottenham ace who wants to leave

He has a desire to quit N17 before August 30.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 22, 2024

The former Liverpool forward arrived from Bournemouth in a deal worth a reported £65m earlier this month. The Lilywhites will have to wait slightly longer to see his first home appearance, however, after he picked up an injury in Spurs' 1-1 draw against Leicester to open their season.

They could at least watch new signing Wilson Odobert make his Premier League debut for the club, though, not long after arriving from Championship side Burnley.

The same can't be said for one particular defender whose time at the club appears to be coming to an end in the next week. According to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Sergio Reguilon is "certain" to complete a move away from Spurs this month, as Daniel Levy looks to cash in amid interest from European giants Barcelona.

Into the final year of his contract, which sees the Spaniard earn a reported £120,000-a-week, Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a cut-price deal to sign the left-back.

Tottenham Hotspur'sSergioReguilonin action with Brighton & Hove Albion's Enock Mwepu

It must be said that an exit would suit all parties, with Reguilon's loan moves to Manchester United and Brentford last season indicating that Ange Postecoglou does not see a place for the former Real Madrid man in his side.

After cashing in on Reguilon, the Lilywhites may even use the money generated courtesy of his departure to seal a deal for AS Monaco's Vanderson, who they've been linked with in recent weeks.

Reguilon needs Tottenham exit

Earning a reported £120k-a-week, Spurs are right to show Reguilon the door this summer if he's not in Postecoglou's plans. Skipp, Emerson Royal and Hojberg suffered that fate and now the left-back looks to join them out the door to continue the Lilywhites' summer clear-out.

Those earlier exits have paved the way for the likes of Solanke, Archie Gray and Odobert to all arrive, representing Spurs' current sustainable business model, and Reguilon's departure will likely make room for more fresh faces. Into the final week of the summer transfer window, those in north London could yet be in for a busy few days.

Before anything, of course, Postecoglou will want to ensure that his side secure their first win of the Premier League campaign when Everton travel to north London in search of ticking off the same goal.

Without Solanke this weekend and perhaps Reguilon on a permanent basis, the Lilywhites have an early chance to prove any doubters wrong about their squad depth. Suffer defeat, however, and any rust shown against Leicester City will look more and more like weakness at Spurs.

Kurtis Patterson and Lloyd Pope are among the players nominated to take part in the new Northern Territory Cricket 365 programme during the Australian winter. The new venture, which will take place between June and August, aims to make use of the dry season in northern Australia at a time when it is not possible for players without international cricket or major domestic deals to travel overseas although the aim is to make it a long-term option. The concept for the interstate cricketers is largely aimed at young and emerging players although it is also viewed as being an option for more senior players who want to keep playing during the traditional off-season in the rest of Australia or who are returning from injury.Patterson is the only player with Test experience involved having played two matches against Sri Lanka in 2019 which included scoring a century in Canberra. Apart from one hundred against South Australia the 2020-21 season was a lean one for him as he averaged 21.29 in the Sheffield Shield. The interstate players will combine with the Territory’s best players to form squads for the City Cyclones, Desert Blaze, Northern Tide and Southern Storm who will each take part in the Men’s Strike League one-day series (June 20-July 25) and T20 tournament (August 15-27). These four teams are also set to be joined by invitational teams in the T20 tournament during August.Between the one-day and T20 tournaments there is also set to be a three-match one-day series between a Cricket Australia XI, comprising the state-nominated players, and the best players from the Northern Territory.”We’re delighted to have the support of Cricket Australia and every state cricket association around the country to launch Cricket 365 in June,” NT Cricket CEO Joel Morrison said. “With a mix of Australian Test, state contracted and emerging young players signed up to play cricket across Darwin and Palmerston, the quality of cricket on display this dry season will be first class.”It’s an exciting time to be involved in cricket in the Territory, especially for our local players, coaches and match officials who will have the unique opportunity to mix with some of Australia’s best cricketers in their own backyard.”New South Wales have provided the largest group of players including Jack Edwards, who scored a century in the Marsh Cup final, and former Australia quick Chris Tremain who could not break into the NSW side in his first season with the state.Pope, the South Australia legspinner, is joined by Redbacks first-team regulars Jake Weatherald and Henry Hunt.”We have said, and continue to believe, that it is vitally important to find ways for players to continue their development in a competitive environment,” Cricket Australia’s national talent and pathways manager Graham Manou said”With such a high calibre of players involved this year, we expect the benefits of Cricket 365 to be far-reaching and we hope it sets a platform for others to benefit in years to come.”Nominated playersNew South Wales Jack Edwards, Mickey Edwards, Mathew Gilkes, Ryan Hackney, Lachie Hearne, Hayden Kerr, Kurtis Patterson, Jason Sangha, Chris Tremain

Ireland allrounder Curtis Campher to undergo ankle surgery

Could return for home internationals against South Africa and Zimbabwe later this summer

ESPNcricinfo staff18-May-2021

Curtis Campher (L) expects to return later in the summer•Getty Images

Ireland allrounder Curtis Campher is set to undergo surgery on his ankle, ruling him out of his team’s World Cup Super League series in the Netherlands next month.Campher, who was born in Johannesburg and grew up in South Africa, made his Ireland debut last year against England after opting to put his Irish passport to good use, and made half-centuries from No. 7 in his first two appearances while chipping in with the ball. He has since become a key member of the ODI side, offering balance as a seam-bowling allrounder in the middle order. He has been managing an ankle problem for some time, and left the field during the Ireland Wolves’ first unofficial ODI against Netherlands A last week after it flared up again, three overs into his spell. He will now undergo surgery, with Mark Rausa, Ireland’s head of sport science, physiotherapy and medical services, suggesting that he could be fit to play some part in the home internationals against South Africa and Zimbabwe later this summer.”Curtis will have surgery for an ankle impingement issue that he has been managing for a prolonged period of time,” Rausa said. “During last week’s Wolves game at Oak Hill, his ankle concern had progressed to the point where he could no longer continue bowling.”He immediately had the ankle scanned and saw a specialist today for assessment, where it was agreed the best course of action was surgery to hopefully resolve the issue long-term. Curtis will then begin his rehab immediately after in preparation for the summer home international series.”

He earns more than Engels: Celtic ace could leave in late deadline day move

Celtic look set to make a statement of intent on deadline day as they are closing in on a potential club-record deal before the end of the summer transfer window.

Sky Sports reports that the Hoops have agreed a whopping £11m fee with Bundesliga side Augsburg for their central midfielder Arne Engels on a permanent basis.

The Belgian youngster now looks set to be a club-record signing for the Scottish giants, which shows that they mean business for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign and beyond.

However, there will also be a focus on outgoings before the deadline tonight as some players could move on to pastures new after falling down the pecking order.

Deadline day interest in Celtic dud

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, English League One side Birmingham City are interested in a swoop to sign Celtic defensive midfielder Tomoki Iwata.

The reporter claims that Birmingham, managed by Brendan Rodgers' former assistant Chris Davies, are now 'pushing' to secure a deal for the Japanese metronome.

It remains to be seen whether or not Davies' connection with the Celtic head coach will help him to get a move over the line before the deadline.

Joseph reveals that the Scottish Premiership champions have been open to offers for the midfielder, but does not outline how much they would want for him.

With Callum McGregor, Odin Thiago Holm, Paulo Bernardo, Reo Hatate, and soon-to-be Engels in the building, minutes may be hard to come by for Iwata this season.

Interestingly, he currently earns more in wages, £7.6k-per-week, than the club's prospective record signing earns, £1.9k-per-week, at his current club.

Celtic must cash in on Iwata

Rodgers must ruthlessly cash in on the 27-year-old dud as he does not look set to be a part of the first-team plans moving forward under the Northern Irishman.

He has been an unused substitute in two Premiership matches so far this season and is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Hoops.

Last season, the experienced midfielder appeared in 19 league matches for the Bhoys and was an average performer in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the table above, Iwata only won 50% of his duels, despite playing in a holding midfield role, and this suggests that he was not dominant in physical duels, which is backed up by him only making 1.2 tackles and interceptions per game.

He was a reliable passer of the ball, as shown by his 90% pass success rate, and offered a calming presence in front of the back four at times.

However, Iwata is not a young and improving player, at the age of 27, and has fallen right down the pecking order at Parkhead, hence why he has not featured this season, and that is why Rodgers must capitalise on this interest from Birmingham and cash in on the midfielder.

Aston Villa sold a "beast" in 2015, now he scores more often than Watkins

Aston Villa had a superb campaign in 2023/24. They finished fourth in the Premier League, their second-highest finish since the competition was rebranded from the First Divison in 1992 when Ron Atkinson was the manager.

Their fourth-place finish saw them qualify for the Champions League, returning to European football’s most prestigious competition for the first time since it was called the European Cup in 1982/83. In that campaign, the Villans were defending champions, winning the trophy in the 1981/82 season.

It was certainly a team effort from Unai Emery’s squad to reach Europe's premier competition again, but one of their players was a standout performer. That man was Ollie Watkins.

Ollie Watkins 2023/24 campaign in numbers

It was a quite remarkable campaign for England international Watkins, and he was one of the best players in the Premier League. The 28-year-old was a key reason as to why the Villans were able to qualify for Europe again.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

The England striker, who scored in the Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands, played 37 times in the top flight of English football, scoring 19 times and registering 13 assists. In all competitions, he played 53 times, with 27 goals and 13 assists in total.

His performances last season were superb, and Watkins was equal second for the most combined goals and assists in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer led the way with 33, and Watkins, alongside Erling Haaland, came in second, with 32 each. They were the only three players in the English top flight who scored and assisted 30 or more goals.

Not only did the former Brentford striker score and assist the second-highest number of goals, but his 13 assists were the best in the top flight. He was recognised for such an achievement, winning the Premier League’s playmaker award.

It was undoubtedly the best season of the striker’s career so far. The 28-year-old performed better than ever and helped the Villans return to the heights of the continent's top competition.

Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa

However, for all his goals last term, there has been a former Villa striker who has somewhat outdone him over the last year.

Christian Benteke’s stats after leaving in 2024

The player in question here is former Villa talisman Christian Benteke.

The 33-year-old now plies his trade in the United States of America for Wayne Rooney’s former club, DC United. It is fair to say the Belgian has had a successful time of things of late.

He has scored 17 goals in 23 MLS games so far in 2024, and two goals in three appearances in the MSL Cup. Impressively, the Belgian is currently leading the MLS Golden Boot race, ahead of the likes of Luis Suarez (16) and Lionel Messi (12).

His record speaks for itself, and he statistically scored more regularly Watkins when looking at his 2023/24 Premier League tally.

Although the Englishman has scored more goals, he has fewer goals per game than the former Liverpool striker as per FBref. Benteke averages 0.79 goals per game in the current MLS season, with Watkins’ average from last term just 0.53 each game, according to FBref.

Reflecting back on Benteke’s time in the Premier League, he was one of the league’s deadliest strikers for a period of time.

In 280 games, he scored 86 times across spells for Villa, Liverpool, who paid the Villans £32.5m in 2015, and Crystal Palace.

He was a formidable centre-forward and enjoyed a successful personal career in the top flight of England as the stats below reflect.

Even though he has not played for Villa for a number of years, he was a "beast" in the Midlands, as football scout Antonio Mango described him.

For Villa fans, it might be enjoyable to see a former player still has his shooting boots on and is consistently finding the back of the net towards the end of his career.

Aston Villa hit gold on amazing £0 signing who's now worth more than Rogers

GOL DO ATLÉTICO!

JOGO ACIRRADO

O Atlético logo voltou a dominar as ações e empilhou chances. Nacho cobrou falta e Vargas cabeceou.
