Southampton are interested in completing the signing of a £20k-a-week ace who Luis Suarez thinks is "great", according to a fresh transfer rumour.
Southampton eyeing Premier League additions
Saints secured a return to the Premier League at the first attempt last season, beating Leeds United in the Championship playoff final to book their place back in the top flight.
There is now plenty of work going on to ensure that Russell Martin's squad is as formidable as it can possibly be heading into the 2024/25 campaign, in order to avoid a speedy return to the second tier, as was the case with Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town last time around.
One player who has been linked with a move to St Mary's this summer is Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg, who hasn't actually played for the Reds since back in 2020, spending various spells out on loan. Southampton see him as a strong option to bring in, with a potential £12.5m transfer on the cards.
Saints have also reportedly made contact with highly-rated Peterborough United centre-back Ronnie Edwards over a move to the south coast. The 21-year-old made a whopping 47 starts in League One last season, showing what a key player he is at such a young age, and he is seen as a big prospect for the future.
Now, another intriguing Southampton transfer update has emerged, with Martin seemingly eyeing a move for a player at the opposite end of his career to Edwards.
Southampton want player who Suarez thinks is "great"
According to a new update from The Boot Room, Southampton are keen on signing Espanyol striker Martin Braithwaite this summer, who has a clause in his contract which allows him to leave for free.
The report states that the 33-year-old "has already held talks about a return to England", however, with "Leicester City, Fulham, Brentford, Burnley and Sheffield United" all interested in snapping him up ahead of next season.
Manchester United transfer target Martin Braithwaite in action for Espanyol
Braithwaite is a hugely experienced figure who could be a shrewd capture by Southampton in the current window, possessing so much pedigree, even if his very best days are probably behind him.
The £20,000-a-week striker has scored 10 goals in 69 caps for Denmark, as well as netting the same number of times in a Barcelona shirt, playing with the likes of Lionel Messi and Suarez. In fact, the latter once heaped praise on his former teammate.
"Martin is going to surprise people. He is at a great level. He was the best player Leganes had and, with the players he has around him at Barcelona, he can reach his potential."

Braithwaite wouldn't be daunted by the Premier League, given his vast experience at both club and international level, and while Martin may not consider him a key starter every week because of his age, he could chip in with important goals that help Southampton stave off the threat of relegation.

Tahlia McGrath celebrates her spectacular catch•Getty Images
An excellent display in the field, highlighted by one of the most extraordinary rebound catches, earned the Strikers victory as the Heat wasted a solid platform in their chase. Georgia Redmayne, with a WBBL career-best, and Maddy Green added 79 in 10 overs for the first wicket but from there they could not form another substantial partnership and the asking rate got out of control. Darcie Brown was superb with ball, removing the dangerous Jess Jonassen, and produced a superb return from the deep to run out Nadine de Klerk. However, nothing could outshine the catch by Tahlia McGrath who ran around from mid-on and dived full length to grab the ball after Madeline Penna had parried the chance from Amelia Kerr above her head at midwicket. With the bat the Strikers fell short of what they should have got after Katie Mack and the in-form Laura Wolvaardt added 75 in 10 overs. Mack departed the ball after reaching her fifty and Wolvaardt’s dismissal in the 17th over saw the Strikers lose 5 for 10 before a couple of crucial late boundaries by Sarah Coyte. The Renegades ignited their season as they held on to secure a narrow victory against top-of-the-table Thunder but they had to survive a scare in the final over. Rosemary Mair, who had earlier claimed two wickets in the Powerplay, had 19 to defend but the first three balls were struck for four by Lauren Smith to make it 7 needed off three. However, Mair managed to recover and with five needed off the last ball Smith couldn’t find the fence. It was a game where the batters struggled throughout except for some early power by Lizelle Lee. The Renegades fell from 1 for 67 to lose their last nine wickets for 43 but early inroads kept them in the game. Sophie Molineux made key inroads, getting Phoebe Litchfield, who had been promoted to open, then had the in-form Heather Knight caught and bowled. Between those wickets a brilliant piece of work in the deep by Georgia Wareham ran out Thunder captain Rachael Haynes as she came back for a second.Ash Gardner showed her power•Getty Images
The Sixers were pushed hard by the Hurricanes but in the end their class and depth came to the fore. As Hayley Matthews clubbed three sixes in a 29-ball 20 and Nicola Carey then kept the innings ticking the Sixers were not safe. Captain Corinne Hall and Sasha Mooney got the requirement down to 17 off 8 balls when Hall was run out by a superb throw from Erin Burns as she attempted a second. Marizanne Kapp completed the 19th over by conceding just four leaving Ashleigh Gardner 16 to defend off the last over. It had been Gardner who powered the Sixers’ innings with a thumping half-century, which included consecutive sixes off Belinda Vakarewa, the first a huge blow over the leg side. Alyssa Healy also started strongly while Ellyse Perry eased to 35 before falling lbw. At 2 for 123 in the 16th with Gardner going strongly a total around 170 was on the cards, but 15-year-old Amy Smith showed impressive composure to strike twice in an over. Hall later conceded she should probably have given Smith her fourth over.Meg Lanning and Nat Sciver combined to see of Perth Scorchers•Getty Images
Nat Sciver put in a fine all-round performance and Meg Lanning eased to an unbeaten half-century as the Stars kept up their momentum since they have stopped dodging the rain. An almost complete performance in the field meant the Scorchers never got away; they had lost Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney, the latter to Sciver, by the end of the Powerplay. They were in a heap at 5 for 52 before Megan Banting and Heather Graham nudged them towards three figures, but it was always unlikely to challenge the Stars who closed out with three sharp run outs. Lanning had no run rate pressure on her and moved along at ease, the innings including a sweetly-timed clip for six over deep midwicket, while Sciver followed her two wickets with a crisp 33.

Brisbane Heat go down by six wickets after being bowled out for paltry 125

Nathan Coulter-Nile celebrates the wicket of Chris Lynn•Getty Images
A pace-bowling masterclass from Nathan Coulter-Nile helped the Melbourne Stars claim all four points against the Brisbane Heat in Canberra as they began their tenth campaign for that elusive BBL title.Coulter-Nile took career-best figures of 4 for 10 and produced two run-outs off his own bowling to ensure the hapless Heat were bowled out for just 125. The chase began nervously with Marcus Stoinis falling for a second-ball duck as the Stars scored one run from the first two overs with Xavier Bartlett bowling a wicket-maiden. They slumped to 3 for 34 and were fortunate not to fall further into the mire with Hilton Cartwright dropped at third man by debutant Jack Wood. But Glenn Maxwell did what Glenn Maxwell does, clubbing 46 from 26 balls to boss the chase and allow Cartwright to guide the side home with 46 not out himself. What’s up, Max? Max Bryant announced himself in BBL 08 as the heir to Chris Lynn’s throne. But after his first season where he made 335 runs in 14 games, averaging 27.91 and striking at 150, his numbers have fallen dramatically. He’s averaged just 15 and stuck at 136 in 11 games since. He started this season with a torturous run-a-ball 20. Sam Heazlett and he batted through the first four-over powerplay without losing a wicket but scored just 19 runs, allowing Maxwell to bowl two overs for just nine runs. Heazlett fell first ball of the fifth over, leaving the Heat in unfamiliar territory.Coulter-Nile clinic Coulter-Nile looked in superb rhythm for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He was too good for Bryant extracting an outside edge, and then forcing a miscue from Lynn with a well-executed cutter. The Heat fell away badly from there. Aside from one bizarre over where Maxwell threw Andre Fletcher the ball, the Stars were ruthless. Tom Cooper threatened briefly with 26 off 24 but Dilbar Hussain bowled him with a skilful slower ball yorker. Cartwright produced an outstanding direct hit run-out coming in from deep midwicket to end Dan Lawrence’s debut BBL innings. He also took an equally brilliant catch at long-on running back with the flight to remove Simon Milenko. Coulter-Nile closed out the innings with two more wickets and two athletic, quick-thinking run-outs in his follow-through. He bowled 15 dot balls and did not concede a boundary in his finest BBL performance.Glenn Maxwell loses his bottom hand while attempting to drive•Getty Images
Spicy start Marcus Stoinis was the dominant opener of the BBL last year but Bartlett made a huge breakthrough second ball. A late outswinger at 140kph found Stoinis’ edge as he tried to launch down the ground. The Stars did not score off the first 11 deliveries of the innings with Fletcher and Cartwright bogged down. Fletcher broke the shackles with a towering six over midwicket that he didn’t even feel the need to watch. But he fell shortly after. Ben Dunk was promoted ahead of Maxwell but he and Cartwright could only muster 14 runs from 16 balls. Cartwright was dropped by Wood at third man off Bartlett before the left-arm wristspinner made amends removing Dunk with his first ball to leave the Stars in real trouble at 3 for 34.Maxwell mauling In a game where the batting was well below par on both sides, Maxwell shone like a beacon. His first task was to get the Stars the Power Boost point, which was almost out of reach until he pummelled Wood over cover and midwicket off consecutive deliveries in the ninth over to ensure they reached 60 with two balls to spare in the tenth. His pure ball-striking took the pressure off Cartwright, who accelerated with a lovely lofted six to the sightscreen. Maxwell tried to end the game quickly thumping Wood twice onto the hill at deep midwicket before he was bowled trying a trademark reverse sweep with 18 to win. Cartwright and Nick Larkin had no trouble closing it out.

10 Carlo Ancelotti Chelsea, Everton
You may not have realised, but aside from his dominant spells in Europe, Carlo Ancelotti had a successful time in the Premier League after leaving Italy for the first time as a manager.
Ancelotti was appointed manager of Chelsea in 2009 and won the Premier League and FA Cup in his first season.
It was Chelsea’s first-ever domestic double, in a season when Ancelotti’s side also set a record by scoring 103 league goals – a feat only surpassed by Manchester City's 106 in 2017/18.
His short but very sweet tenure in south-west London left a lasting impact at the club and contributed to Chelsea’s sustained competitiveness in the years following his departure in 2011.
Ancelotti won just over 54% of his Premier League games as boss, which was largely dampened by his time at Everton between 2019 and 2021. Away from English shores, he has lifted the most Champions League trophies out of any manager and became the first to win all of Europe’s top five leagues after his first La Liga triumph with Real Madrid in 2022.
Ranking the football managers with the most trophy wins in history
Carlo Ancelotti sealed his fifth Champions League title at Wembley, but where does he rank among the very best to ever do it?
Marcus Rashford is 1000/1 to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or. That means if you bet £1 on the Manchester United winger to win it, you could win a cool grand – but how realistic is it that Rashford will actually do that? Impossible, right?
The same word would have been used ahead of the 2015/16 season when Leicester City were handed the impossible odds of 5000/1 to lift the Premier League. Of course, this was completely justified, as the Foxes had narrowly avoided relegation the previous season.
Then Claudio Ranieri comes into the picture; a tactical genius who had managed across the globe before his time in Leicester, including a four-year stint at Chelsea from 2000 to 2004.
It was always 'impossible' for Leicester to win the league – until they actually did it. This was an achievement so great that it directly rivals Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles side as one of the greatest teams the league has ever seen.
During his first season at Leicester, Ranieri displayed such a unique tactical approach that challenged the dominance of the traditional ‘big six’, bringing the likes of Jamie Vardy and N’Golo Kante to life, that he very well deserves a place in this list.
8 Sir Kenny Dalglish Blackburn, Newcastle, Liverpool
Ranieri's level of uniqueness applies to Sir Kenny Dalglish, too. He lifted the 1994/95 Premier League with Blackburn Rovers in his final season managing the club.
After 14 successful years as a player and manager at Liverpool, Dalglish had already cemented his top-flight English football legacy before he joined Blackburn.
It's not like he needed to prove himself at Rovers, having already won the First Division three times with the Reds. But that's exactly what he did when his Blackburn side finished one point ahead of Man United – despite an ironic 2-1 defeat at Anfield on the final day of the season – to win Blackburn the league for the first time since 1914.
With a spell at Newcastle United and another run at his beloved Liverpool in 2012, Dalglish went on to win 115 of his 238 Premier League games as a manager.
7 Roberto Mancini Manchester City
Roberto Mancini won Manchester City’s first-ever Premier League title to mark the start of a relentless, dominant period for the Citizens in English top-flight football.
He won over 61% of his Premier League matches at City – a very high number that comes close to some of the greats who feature later on in this list.
Mancini also took charge of arguably the greatest-ever Premier League moment, when Sergio Aguero’s 94th-minute goal secured his side the title against QPR.
The closest title races in Premier League history
Manchester City and Arsenal have delivered a Premier League title race for the ages – here are some of the tightest from years gone by…
ByStephan Georgiou May 20, 2024 6 Antonio Conte Chelsea, Tottenham
Antonio Conte made an instant impact when he arrived at Chelsea ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.
Not only did Conte guide his side to the Premier League title in his first attempt, but the former Italy midfielder also reached the FA Cup final in the same season, before being beaten by Arsenal at Wembley.
Conte had just two seasons at Chelsea before heading back to his homeland to take charge of Inter, where he won his fourth Scudetto in Serie A. He then returned for two largely unsuccessful seasons as Tottenham Hotspur manager in 2021. Although, he did become one of only three Spurs managers to lead the side to a top-four finish in the Premier League era.
Conte had a very respectable win rate of 63% during his time in the English top-flight, but it's hard to place him in the top five Premier League managers having only taken charge of 132 games. However, Chelsea's stunning performance in 2016/17 and the records they broke along the way should never go unnoticed.
The best points totals in Premier League history
No room for the Invincibles here…
ByJack Salveson Holmes Jun 2, 2024 5 Jurgen Klopp Liverpool
Jurgen-Klopp of Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool knowing he was the man who brought Premier League success to the club for the first time in its history.
Not only did he capture the hearts of almost every fan at the Merseyside club, but he restored faith in a city that no longer believed their football club would reach the heights it once did.
The German won almost 63% of his 334 Premier League games during the nine years he managed Liverpool – a remarkable achievement considering the squad he inherited.
Klopp won the Premier League at Liverpool, but he only delivered it once, albeit with intense competition during his tenure. His time at Anfield included European success and lifting almost every trophy he possibly could. However, given this list is based on success in the English top flight, it seems reasonable to place Klopp as the fifth-best Premier League manager of all time just short of the man next up…
4 Jose Mourinho Chelsea, Man Utd, Tottenham
Even without all of his success at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho is viewed as a Premier League legend for his impact off the pitch as well as on it.
The reason we have deemed Mourinho as the fourth-greatest Premier League manager of all time is due to the fact that he did it, came back, and did it again.
In his debut season at Chelsea, Mourinho brought the league title back to Stamford Bridge for the first time in 50 years, totalling a then-record of 95 points. The following season, he won it again, and during his second spell at the west London club nine years later, he was able to replicate his domestic success impeccably.
The Portuguese also won the Premier League’s Manager of the Season award three times, stamping his name in the history books forever.
Although his win percentage sits at just below 60% in the 363 Premier League games he managed, Mourinho’s impact on the Premier League as a whole, plus his three league titles, makes him one of the best ever.
3 Arsene Wenger Arsenal
Arsene Wenger is the only Premier League manager to go an entire season without losing a single game, so it wouldn’t be far-fetched to argue that the Frenchman deserves a higher spot in this list based on that feat alone.
What the Invincibles achieved in 2003/04 with Wenger at the helm is arguably the greatest achievement in not just English football, but the wider sporting world.
Wenger was at the forefront of Arsenal's supremacy during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The iconic undefeated season with the Gunners also marked his third Premier League title since joining the club in 1996, but it was also his last.
This fact, paired with the very sour ending that Wenger had to endure right up towards the end of his eventual retirement in 2018, places him in third among the Premier League greats.
After a 22-year spell with Arsenal, Wenger cemented his name in the Premier League record books, having taken charge of the most games out of any other manager, with 476 wins in 828 matches.

ByAlex Roberts Dec 7, 2023 2 Pep Guardiola Man City
Pep Guardiola may have won trophies galore and recently led Manchester City to an unprecedented four straight league titles, but he just falls short in terms of this list.
His win percentage of 74% – the best on this list – is a mark of the dominance his City sides have endured in such a short period of time, though that only makes him the second-greatest manager since the Premier League’s inception.
The Spaniard, brought European glory to City; Guardiola’s Champions League success was the first of its kind for the Citizens as the club would claim an iconic treble following their victory over Inter in June 2023.
The elephant in the room is, of course, City’s 115 charges that loom over the heads of everyone involved at the club like an eerie, grey, stormy cloud. City also have the second-highest net spend only to Chelsea in the Premier League era, which has brought debate over whether the Abu Dhabi state-owned club have essentially bought their success.
However, Guardiola’s achievements cannot be underestimated in terms of putting a side together that will simply win a lot of games on a consistent basis throughout a long, hard, slogging season.
He has lifted the Premier League six times since his arrival in Manchester and he’s only been at the club for eight years. So you could argue that if he were to rival the longevity of the managerial stalwarts of years gone by, he may experience even further success.
Guardiola has won 225 of his 304 matches while only experiencing defeat 38 times, which is also an achievement in itself.

ByLewis Thompson Jun 29, 2024 1 Sir Alex Ferguson Man Utd
Ultimately, it is very hard to list a manager greater than Sir Alex Ferguson in the Premier League era.
Not only did he win 13 Premier Leagues at Manchester United over a 20-year period, but he changed how the club would be viewed for the foreseeable future.
After the dominance of United’s bitter rivals Liverpool in the late 1970s and 80s, Ferguson shifted the Manchester club’s standing to be seen as one of world football’s most formidable forces.
Ferguson won 27 Manager of the Month awards, too – the most in the league’s history. His first came in August 1993 and last in October 2012, which proves his lengthy presence as a winning manager.
With 528 wins in 810 Premier League matches, the Scotsman retired with a more than respectable win percentage of just over 65%.
Throughout his trophy-laden spell at the helm of United, Ferguson’s sides would score a whopping 1,627 goals while conceding a mere 703 in the Premier League. He was the leader of multiple historic, trophy-winning sides that will be remembered in the English top flight forever.
