Need-for-speed calls are answered, but Ben Stokes turns to James Anderson

England lack nothing in their pace kit, except bags of wickets

George Dobell10-Jul-2020For years, whenever England have struggled in the field, the call has been for pace. Whether struggling for penetration at Chennai or Lord’s or Adelaide, the suggestion has always been that, with a bit more pace, England would be able to extract more life from the surface and have the ingredient their attack has been lacking.Well, here they had plenty of pace. Indeed, Mark Wood produced what is thought to be the quickest display of bowling by an England player across an innings at home in the past 15 years. And what did it earn him? One tailend wicket for 74 runs.He wasn’t alone, either. Jofra Archer, we know, can bowl as fast as anyone. And while here he tended to concentrate on control – this surface hasn’t offered a great deal of help for pace – there were still some quick deliveries across his 22 overs. He finished wicketless. It was telling that Ben Stokes, like so many England captains before him, relied on James Anderson to deliver the most overs. Anderson is 37 now and generally operates at a speed just above 80 mph. But, such is his control and skill, he remains the most dangerous bowler more often than not. And while he was not, by his high standards, quite at his best, he still delivered 11 maidens in his 25 overs. England’s three other seamers delivered 10 between them. It’s no coincidence that the most successful bowler in the match to date, Jason Holder, operates at a similar pace to Anderson. He derived his success by pitching the ball a bit fuller than the England bowlers and extracting movement – especially swing – that the hosts could not replicate. But England have longed for this pace. For years they have been on the wrong end of attacks containing quality fast bowlers. Now, at last, they have some firepower of their own and they couldn’t resist the temptation to play them. They were like the man taking his new sports car out in the snow; or desperate to use his new skis in mid-summer. They haven’t exactly picked the wrong attack. But they might have picked the wrong attack for the conditions.James Anderson appeals for the wicket of Roston Chase•Getty Images

England’s hearts probably sank when they opened their curtains on Friday morning. After batting in grim, overcast conditions, they were greeted by the sort of bright, sunny morning that suggested batting could be easier. But that is the risk you take when you choose to bat first in the gloom and England would have hoped to have an attack to cope with most conditions. As it transpired, it looked just a little ill-balanced. Another old-school England seamer – the likes of Matthew Hoggard, perhaps, or even Chris Rushworth or Alan Richardson – might have proved the perfect foil to Anderson. It’s surely too early to jump to conclusions but maybe, just as England’s football team rarely found a way to accommodate Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the same side, their cricket team might find the best use of Wood and Archer is by rotating them? There will be those who suggest Stuart Broad would have made all the difference. And it is true that Broad, at this stage of his career, with his determination to make batsmen play, might have been well-suited to this surface. But we have to be careful not to make the same mistake we have with pace: presume that quick and easy solutions would make all the difference. Broad has, no doubt, had a magnificent career. But in his most recent 28 home Tests – that’s a period going back almost five years – he has taken only one five-wicket haul.ALSO READ: Broad ‘frustrated’ and ‘angry’ at Test omissionEngland also have to be careful not to over compensate in Manchester. If conditions there look as if they may favour pace above seam – and they may well – it will probably pay to stick with these bowlers. Their fault may have been playing an attack ideally suited for Brisbane in Southampton. There are other options within the England squad, too. For all Broad’s virtues, he is another right-arm fast medium bowler. Sam Curran, with his left-arm angle and ability to swing the ball, might offer more variation. You could, at a push, even make a case for playing him in place of one of the batsmen. His Test batting average (27.34) is only about two below that of Joe Denly (29.55).But whoever plays, whatever their pace, they have to bowl with more accuracy than England managed here. It wasn’t that they were awful, by any means. But compared to the West Indies’ bowlers, they were just a little short, just a little leg side and just a little unable to build or sustain pressure.”Obviously you need control,” Anderson said. “We saw West Indies bowl well. They had a couple of bowlers who offered control in Holder and Roach and that gave the quicker guys the freedom to bowl fast. You need a balance.”In many ways, Wood’s performance was admirable. His pace hardly dropped in his 22 overs. Right to the end, he was passing 90 mph regularly. But by bowling too short, he failed to generate the movement that proved so dangerous for Holder. On a different surface – maybe the surface in Manchester; maybe even the fourth-innings surface here – Wood will be a huge asset.Archer, too, was only slightly off his game. He squandered one wicket through overstepping – an infuriating waste, really – and also strayed on to the batsmen’s legs more often than he will like. But his real issue was struggling to generate the movement that might have been expected of him. And, while England may feel they allowed West Indies to get a few above par, it probably was only a few. England’s first innings score of 204 has, not for the first time, asked a little too much of their bowlers. In both innings, a score of around 250 might be considered par.In truth, West Indies have so far batted and bowled better than England. Kraigg Brathwaite played later and straighter than England’s top order while Shane Dowrich, despite never looking comfortable against the short ball, battled hard in contributing a vital half-century. The discipline and skill with which they evaded the short ball has perhaps made England’s bowling effort seem rather less good than it was.So this was a slightly dispiriting start to life with Wood and Archer in tandem. But there will be other surfaces, many of them, when the pair are the perfect solution. But just because you’ve bought a fine new hat, it doesn’t mean you need to wear it in the shower.

Ipswich struck gold on free signing who’s now worth 3x more than Burns

When the first ball is kicked to start Ipswich Town's mission to stay up in the Premier League next season, this will be the first time the Tractor Boys have tasted football in the elite division since the close of the 2001/02 campaign.

George Burley was the iconic manager in the dug-out at the time, managing to steer the Suffolk-based side to fifth in the Premier League standings before relegation occured, and the new top-flight outfit will hope Kieran McKenna can be their next legendary boss in the top league akin to the Scotsman if he doesn't walk away in the off-season unexpectedly.

Ipswich won't go through a whole host of players in the summer you imagine, having stuck by their successful model in League One moving up to the Championship, with Luke Woolfenden raring to go and succeed again having been in and around the Portman Road ranks since 2017.

The 25-year-old, who would have been just three years of age when Ipswich were last positioned in the top-flight, has been there through all the recent ups and downs in Suffolk before the surreal success story got underway and continues to go from strength to strength with two promotions in his back pocket now under McKenna's guidance.

Luke Woolfenden's rise at Ipswich

Given his first-team debut by divisive ex-Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy back in 2017, Woolfenden's rise has been a slow and gruelling one from his perspective.

The homegrown centre-back would only make five first-team appearances during his first two full campaigns pulling on a Tractor Boys jersey, before starting to leave an impression on the men's team during Ipswich's collapse all the way down to League One.

Woolfenden is the only surviving member of the XI from his debut clash now, going on to become a main first-team presence during Ipswich's stint in the third tier.

It wouldn't be until McKenna's emergence onto the scene that his spot would become set in stone for good however, with 87 league appearances managed three seasons on the trot in the league before the ex-Manchester United man arrived, which has resulted in his transfer value skyrocketing – according to Football Transfers.

Now, the 25-year-old has only missed ten league games over the last two campaigns and will want to remain as important to the Ipswich cause for the foreseeable, even whilst the underdogs make the colossal leap up to the Premier League.

Woolfenden's season in numbers

The defenders at Portman Road have, arguably, not been given their moment in the spotlight this season with the full-throttle nature of McKenna's men going forward meaning the attackers will always steal the plaudits – with 92 goals scored in total across 46 games.

Still, the likes of Woolfenden and his frequent partner in the heart of defence, Cameron Burgess, have been equally as important, with the 25-year-old living up to his label as a "leader" by his manager which was given to him just this February before promotion was officially sealed.

Complementing each other well at the back, with Woolfenden the more measured operator on the ball – when looking at the table above – compared to the brute strength of his ex-Accrington Stanley teammate, the Ipswich Academy graduate will hope he can hack the step-up to the top-flight after excelling in the two divisions below.

The dependable Tractor Boys number six demonstrated his calmness under pressure on the final day against Huddersfield Town, picking up his 14th clean sheet of the season in the 2-0 win, whilst also only misplacing five of his 64 passes as his boyhood club pulled off the unthinkable to finally return to the Premier League.

He won't want to stop here though, eager to keep progressing at a club very much on the rise, after not feeling that secure about his future in Suffolk before McKenna's arrival onto the scene.

The 6 foot 4 warrior's transformative arc in becoming one of the first names on the Ipswich team sheet has coincided in his transfer value also going through the roof, with his valuation – at this current moment in time – making him worth three times more than Wes Burns, who has shone for the promotion-winners in his own right this season alongside Woolfenden.

Wes Burns

Woolfenden's transfer value in 2024

Woolfenden actually boasts the tag of being the most valued asset in the jubilant Ipswich camp at the moment, according to Football Transfers, with his valuation sitting pretty at a handsome £7.2m.

To add further context to his hefty price tag, Woolfenden's defensive teammate in Leif Davis – despite picking up a monumental 21 assists from left-back – is worth nearly £3m less at £4.8m.

Burns also finds that his valuation pales into insignificance when glanced at side-by-side with the centre-back's, worth just £2.3m despite opening the scoring on the final day to calm any nerves that Ipswich might slip up against the Terriers.

The Welshman's ten goal contributions from 38 games overall this campaign shows off his importance in Ipswich moving up to the top-flight regardless of this low estimated value, but with his 30th birthday coming towards the end of the calendar year, he doesn't arguably have the same time on his side that Woolfenden has to blossom into an even better talent.

Once only valued in the £800k region back in 2020, Woolfenden will hope he doesn't crash back to reality when lining up to face the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City next season, and he can just continue riding this wave of success for as long as he possibly can.

Ipswich could hire "intense" 3-4-2-1 manager if McKenna leaves

£20,000-a-week Leeds star already pushing to leave Elland Road this summer

Leeds United stars are already being linked with the exit door at Elland Road after they were consigned to another season in the Championship over the weekend.

Leeds set for major changes

Daniel Farke's side fell at the final hurdle on Sunday as an Adam Armstrong goal saw Southampton beat the Yorkshire side in the play-off final, a result that confirmed Leeds will be travelling to Millwall rather than Manchester next season.

The Leeds boss rued his side's decision-making on the day, explaining that "we started on the front foot but I think our decision-making wasn't top class" and adding "it felt like we weren't 100% committed to the final pass or shot".

Leeds must now axe £12m star after 3/10 play-off display

This Leeds United dud could find his minutes cut ahead of the next Championship season.

ByKelan Sarson May 27, 2024

But the result, which makes Leeds the first side since Sunderland (1997/98) to reach 90 points and not gain promotion from England's second tier, is likely to have a knock-on effect this summer, with reports previously claiming Leeds must raise around £100m in player sales should they remain a Championship side.

The same report claims that "up to 10 could go and would only be replaced by free transfers and loan signings", with the club still owing significant transfer fees to other clubs for deals made during their stint as a Premier League club.

Perhaps most importantly, failure to secure promotion has left Crysencio Summerville's departure almost certain amid Premier League interest, with the Championship player of the season now "expected to leave" ahead of the new season. He is not the only attacker seeking the exit door either.

Gnonto pushing to leave Leeds again

Now, it has emerged that Wilfried Gnonto is once again pushing for a move away from the club this summer. The Italian was keen to leave last summer, but a deal to sell him could not be agreed and he ultimately stayed put, a decision that has seen him axed from the Italy national squad for the upcoming European Championships in Germany.

He has been in and out of favour this season, starting just 19 times for Farke and often used off the substitutes bench, though the Italian was part of the starting XI for Sunday's Wembley disappointment.

Now, reports from Italy, relayed by MOT Leeds News, claim that he is ready to leave Elland Road for good this summer, and is prioritising a move back to Italy, where he believes he will be able to best showcase his talents to Azzurri coach Luciano Spalletti.

Indeed, it is added that the forward has already begun to look for a new club, despite still having three years left to run on his £20,000 a week deal in Yorkshire.

As Leeds found out last summer with loans for Diego Llorente and Rasmus Kristensen, Serie A is hardly awash with funds at present despite having five sides playing Champions League football next season, and both players seem unlikely to be bought by Roma after their loan stints.

As a result, it may be hard for Farke's side to get any meaningful fee for the 20-year-old despite his performances this season, especially in comparison to potential fees they may have received from interested parties in England.

Mohammad Hafeez self-isolating after biosecurity protocol breach

Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan allrounder, has been told to self-isolate after breaching biosecurity protocols by posing for a photo with a member of the public.Hafeez posted the photo, taken on the golf course adjacent to the on-site hotel at the Ageas Bowl, on Twitter on Wednesday morning, saying: “Met an inspirational young lady today morning [sic] at golf course. She is 90+ & living her life healthy & happily. Good healthy routine.”While players have been permitted to use the golf course at the Ageas Bowl, they have been advised to avoid interaction with anyone outside the biosecure bubble, since the course is still open to the public. The ECB’s medical team were made aware of the photo, and a PCB statement confirmed that Hafeez had been instructed to isolate “for his [safety] and the safety and security of everyone around him”.ALSO READ: Cox dropped by Kent for Covid-19 protocol breachHafeez underwent a Covid-19 test on Wednesday afternoon, and the PCB said that he would be free to join back up with the rest of the touring party “at some stage” on Thursday provided his test result is negative. Hafeez is not part of the Test squad, and is on the tour ahead of the three-match T20I series starting August 28.The sanction is lenient when compared to other breaches. Phil Simmons and Joe Root were both asked to self-isolate for five days and return two negative tests following their departures from the bubble for a funeral and a birth respectively, while Jofra Archer was also required to self-isolate for five days and return two negatives after stopping off at his flat when travelling from Southampton to Manchester. An ECB spokesperson confirmed that the discrepancy was because Hafeez had not officially left the bubble. On Tuesday, Kent announced that batsman Jordan Cox had been dropped for their next Bob Willis Trophy match after posing for a photograph with a member of the public, meaning he was forced to enter self-isolation and miss their next match this week – a similar offence to that committed by Hafeez.”This morning, Mohammad Hafeez went to a golf course, which is adjacent to the team hotel and part of the bio-secure bubble,” a PCB statement said. “During the golf round, he was photographed with a member of the public, which he subsequently posted on his social media account.”As it was evident from the photograph that Hafeez had breached the two-metre social distancing protocol and following a consultation process with the team doctor, the team management has decided to isolate him until he returns a negative Covid-19 test.”The decision to put Hafeez in isolation has been taken for his and, the safety and security of everyone around him. The team management believes it was an inadvertent mistake, but a good reminder for everyone on the importance of following the bio-secure protocols, which have been designed for the health and safety of everyone involved in the series.”The team management has updated the England and Wales Cricket Board of its decision.”Before travelling, Hafeez tested positive for Covid-19, before deciding to get tested privately himself and returning a negative test. He then returned two more negative tests, meaning he was allowed to travel to the UK.1600 BST – This story was updated to include details of Hafeez’s self-isolation

England's prospects in World Test Championship race hampered by rain

Pakistan’s series defeat in England means they have plenty of work to do in the back end of the WTC

S Rajesh and Shiva Jayaraman26-Aug-2020

The covers were on but the rain on Day 5 morning was persistent•Getty Images

The two rain-affected draws in their three-Test series against Pakistan have put England on a sticky wicket in their quest for a place in the final of World Test Championship (WTC). To put these results in perspective, a win in the forthcoming tour of India will fetch only 24 points – given it is a five-Test series – but the difference between a win and a draw in a three-Test series is 27 points (40 points for a win, 13 for a draw). The WTC schedule is not halfway through yet, with 14 out of 27 series still to be played, but here is a look at where teams stand at this point.

England
England began their summer with a theoretical chance of leapfrogging to No.1 on the WTC points table. But while the loss in the first Test of the series against West Indies put paid to such hopes, the draw in the third Test against Pakistan means that they will have to settle for the third spot, at present, behind India and Australia.A couple of more wins in the summer would’ve given them a healthier chance of finishing in the top two, but they have lost out on a potential 54 points with the two washouts against Pakistan. They will have to fare exceptionally well in their remaining two series, both away – a five-Test series in India and a two-match series in Sri Lanka – to finish in the top two from here on. England face a daunting task of upending India in their own backyard if they are to entertain chances of playing the WTC final at Lord’s. The last time they toured India, in 2016-17, they went down 4-0 in a five-match series. However, they did thrash Sri Lanka 3-0.Pakistan
Pakistan would have hoped to secure at least one win on their England tour given their decent Test record in the country, but they settle for a total of 26 points from the three matches, which drags them back a little in the race for a spot in the final. They have three 60-point home Tests left (one of a two-match series against Bangladesh and a two-match series against South Africa), which they would look to capitalise on. A full 180-points return from the three home Tests will mean that they progress to 346 points but will still be 14 points short of what India have now. With Australia, too, comfortably placed to finish in the top-two, the two-match series in New Zealand has to go well for Pakistan to give them a realistic chance. They, however, lost both Tests the last time they toured New Zealand in 2016-17. And they can ill afford to drop any points in the home Tests.

India
India raced off the blocks, winning every Test against West Indies, South Africa and Bangladesh, but the two losses in New Zealand left them with a bit to do in their last two series. The tour to Australia later this year is expected to be a tough one, with Australia looking the avenge their 1-2 series defeat in 2018-19. That will be followed by a five-match home series against England early next year. The peculiar feature about India’s WTC fixtures is that the last two series will include as many Test matches as the first four: nine. Each Test will, therefore, count for fewer points, meaning that India will have to play more matches and put in more sustained effort to rack up the points. The good thing from India’s point of view is that the England series comes towards the end of the WTC calendar, which means they will have a reasonable idea of what they’ll need to do in that series to qualify for the final.Australia
Australia’s perfect home season – they won all five Tests against Pakistan and New Zealand – means they have racked up 296 points in three series. In terms of average points per series, that works out to 98.7, which is the best among all teams. (India’s have slipped to 90.)Two of Australia’s three series, though, are in Bangladesh and South Africa. Their last tours to these countries weren’t memorable: they only drew level 1-1 in Bangladesh, and lost 3-1 in South Africa. Their home series is against India, against whom they lost 2-1 the last time around. Australia will want better returns in all three series.New Zealand
New Zealand’s campaign revived spectacularly with the 120 points they gained against India; before that series, they had lost four out of five Tests in the WTC. Their average of 60 points per series is only fourth-best, after Australia, India and England, but they have a reasonably favourable list of series lined up: away in Bangladesh, and at home against West Indies and Pakistan. They haven’t toured Bangladesh since 2013-14, when they drew 0-0, while they won every Test in their last home series against Pakistan and West Indies. If they repeat those performances in the three series, they will finish on 460 points. The othersSri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa and Bangladesh make up the rest of the table, but none of those teams is currently in contention for the top two spots. Sri Lanka, though, have home series coming up against England and Bangladesh to move up the table. South Africa have lost six out of seven Tests and did their cause no good by being docked six points for slow over rate against England. West Indies got on board with a fine Test win in England, but then lost the next two to spoil their case, while Bangladesh are the only team without a point on the board.
