Having been held to 142, the Sixers produced an outstanding bowling display as the Stars’ late-season form slump continued
The Report by Daniel Brettig at the MCG31-Jan-2020The Sydney Sixers will host the Big Bash League decider at the SCG and consequently the celebrity bushfire relief fundraising game that will precede it, after the Melbourne Stars fell into an almighty heap at the MCG to maintain their nine-year history of struggling in the tournament finals. In a match conspicuous for its distinct lack of boundaries – only 15 fours or sixes were struck all night – the Sixers’ measly 7 for 142 proved far too many for the Stars as they were pressured into chaos by Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Steve O’Keefe and Sean Abbott, returning their lowest ever score in a BBL game. A small crowd was left to sing forlorn renditions of Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline as the match petered out, thrusting the Stars into an elimination final at home on Thursday night that they must win in order to face the Sixers again.Josh Hazlewood celebrates with his teammates after taking the wicket of Pete Handscomb•Getty Images
The Stars’ failure to stay in the game for long enough to have a chance of chasing down their target rendered meaningless an outstanding spell by Adam Zampa, who had succeeded in defeating Steven Smith while reaching 16 wickets at 16.06 for the tournament – his best ever tally for a domestic Twenty20 competition – and conceding only 6.76 runs per over, his best economy rate for any event in which he has played 10 matches or more.Sixers unscathed after PowerplayOn a decidedly dry, straw-coloured surface, the Sixers were sent in by Glenn Maxwell and seemed intent, with a shortened batting line-up that featured Abbott as high as No. 7, on building steadily rather than swinging for the fences. In truth they were not given much opportunity to do so by the Stars, who bowled commendably tight lines in the early overs, meaning that even without losing a wicket, Josh Philippe and James Vince were still fighting to take control of proceedings.Nevertheless, a tally of 46 after the Powerplay was enough of a platform if some further acceleration could be found soon afterwards, and the introduction of Zampa when the fielding restrictions lifted had Philippe and Vince looking visibly intent upon clearing the boundary. Philippe charged his first ball and collected a single from the second, before Vince swung across the first delivery he faced from the wrist spinner and skied a simple catch. This turned out to be less the end of the beginning than the beginning of the end.But picked apart by Zampa after itTaking after the lead of Callum Ferguson for the Sydney Thunder in Hobart, Maxwell used his bowlers freely and frequently, handing the ball to no less than eight members of his XI. These frequent changes – even allowing Marcus Stoinis his first over of the tournament, from which he succeeded in coaxing Moises Henriques to flick errantly to short fine leg – denied the Sixers much chance to get into a rhythm. The controversies of Henriques’ dismissal, where it was unclear whether Zampa had been outside the fielding circle at short fine leg when the ball left Stoinis’ hand, and also Smith’s evident annoyance at being given out caught behind, caused more than a few shaking heads in the Sixers’ camp. However, there could be no debate that the innings was wrapped around Zampa’s fingers, as he delivered another exemplary spell for the Stars in a year where he will be bowling for Australia in the T20 World Cup on home soil. His last wicket, a delectable leg break zipping past Abbott for Seb Gotch’s second stumping, was a sight to please any spin bowler, past or present.Sixers give themselves a chanceEarly wickets were mandatory for the visitors given the paltry total they were defending, and there was a collective yelp of delight when the tournament’s leading scorer Stoinis clipped Ben Dwarshuis tamely to a straight mid-on in the third over. Five balls later Nick Larkin flicked Abbott straight to short fine leg, signalling greater anxiousness among the Stars, and when Hazlewood scythed through Peter Handscomb in the manner that has more or less ensured the end of the Victorian’s Test match career, the game was wide open.Nic Maddinson had been the only Stars batsman to even hint at enduring, and for a little more than three overs he and Maxwell tried to rebuild. The run rate was far from outrageous, and in Maxwell the Stars had perhaps the best middle-order player in the competition at their disposal. But the brief calm was interrupted by more mayhem when Maddinson leaned back to cut Lyon and could only slice a catch to gully. Maxwell was suddenly alone as the last of the specialist batsmen. And juggle their way into a home BBL finalEven now, the Stars had a reasonable chance, provided Maxwell could find someone to stay with him. But a remarkably low boundary count – only four fours for the innings entering the 11th over after the Sixers had only managed six fours and one six in their innings – meant that the required rate was creeping up quickly. In search of a circuit-breaker, Maxwell aimed to launch O’Keefe over long off, and struck it cleanly. But O’Keefe’s low arm action meant the ball travelled flat and low off the bat, within the reach of Vince on the boundary. He fumbled his first attempt and the ball sprang free, before recovering admirably to snatch the chance in one hand and send Maxwell on his way. That, more or less, was that, condemning the Stars to their fourth consecutive defeat and delivering the Sixers a home tournament decider at the SCG next Sunday. The Stars must regroup to host the Strikers or Thunder in order to force a rematch in Sydney.
Former assistant coach says a player of Buttler’s talent should average ’40-plus’ by this point in his Test career

Paul Farbrace has admitted he is “worried” about Jos Buttler’s form, but feels England should stick with him as their keeper for the Test series in Sri Lanka. While Farbrace, England’s former assistant coach, regards Buttler as a “brilliant professional” and a “selfless cricketer” he accepts he “needs to score runs” in Sri Lanka or “step aside” from the Test side.ALSO READ: ‘I’m too old now to get picked on potential’ – ButtlerButtler has made just one Test century in his 41 Tests (73 innings) and, since the start of the Ashes, has made one half-century in 10 Tests and averaged 21.31. He hasn’t reached 30 in his most recent eight Test innings.”I am worried about Jos,” Farbrace said. “I think Jos should be England’s keeper and batter but he knows he can’t keep going long periods of time without making contributions.”What should a player of his ability be averaging after 40 games? It should be 40-plus. It is a lot lower than he would want it to be.”I would definitely keep him for the Sri Lanka series but he needs to score runs. If not, then he has to step aside.”Buttler does look set to start the Sri Lanka tour as England’s first-choice keeper. But the recall of Ben Foakes, player of the series when England won in Sri Lanka in late 2018, is sure to increase the pressure on Buttler’s position. And Farbrace feels Foakes has proved his ability and shouldn’t be judged too harshly on a disappointing 2019 Championship season (in which he averaged 26.14) as it may well have been provoked by his being dropped by England. Farbrace retains belief in Jonny Bairstow’s ability, too, though he accepts he “did not score enough runs.”ALSO READ: Foakes refreshed after winter off and ready for second chance”Foakes is England’s best keeper bar none,” Farbrace said. “He is a quality act with the bat. He showed he is up to it in Sri Lanka.”Being dropped in the West Indies had a massive effect on him during the English summer. It kicked the legs from underneath him.”Jonny Bairstow’s keeping improved enormously, too, but he got bowled too often and did not score enough runs. To get the best out of Jonny, he bats at No. 7 and keeps wicket. A lot of us think he can nail down No. 5, but maybe No. 7 suits him.”While Farbrace, now director of sport at Warwickshire, does not have the influence around the England camp he once did, his views remain intriguing. In his role with England, he was a steadfast supporter of Buttler. If even he is losing confidence, it suggests Buttler is running out of chances.Still, Farbrace remains a fan of Buttler and feels he has the talent and technique to make it in Test cricket. Addressing a roomful of young cricketers on the PCA’s recent rookie camp, Farbrace told them how the previous team management had urged Buttler to simply relax and enjoy the game. Then, Farbrace believes, he requires only greater game awareness to enjoy more consistent success.Jos Buttler has endured a tough run in Test cricket•Getty Images
“I was watching the IPL on television a couple of years ago,” Farbrace said. “Jos’ shoulder were hunched. So I phoned him and asked ‘are you enjoying it?’ He said ‘not really.'”So I said, ‘what would your mum – who coached him when he was a boy – have said?’ And he said ‘try to enjoy it.’ I said, ‘well, there you are then.’ He went on to make 50s in his next five games.”We always told him not to worry about the level of expectation. Just go in and play the game and remember why you play: because you enjoy it.”Jos is a very selfless cricketer. Everything about him as a character and person, you can see why everybody wants him in the team. He has that great knack of saying the right thing at the right time, he is a brilliant professional, he has got a lot of experience and is a team-orientated person like Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Moeen Ali. You want those people in your team.”There are times when he has gone in and played in a way that worked for the team. He got one of England’s best hundreds in recent times against India where he had more dot balls in a hundred than anyone else for ten years [his leave percentage of 24 was actually the highest of England’s most recent 30 Test centuries]. It was a rearguard action at Trent Bridge.”I think it is being able to understand where the game is at and what he needs to do. That is what the best players can do. They work out the situation and play accordingly. That is what Root, Cook and Stokes can do.”I don’t think it is a technique issue. He knows he has the defence. It is a case of trusting that defence and being clear on the situation of the game and playing accordingly. He has to work out what the game needs from him at the given moment. It is what Stokes has done brilliantly.”Over the last 18 months he has worked out how he needs to play for the current situation. The more he does it, the more confidence he has. All Jos is lacking is consistency of being able to bat according to the situation.”England fly to Sri Lanka on Monday and begin their tour with a three-day match against a Board President’s XI starting on Saturday.

Tuesday’s 5-0 defeat to rivals Arsenal was the latest blow for the Blues, who may need to raise £100 million through player sales before the end of the financial year, or risk PSR sanctions.
However, despite this, there have still been plenty of rumours about new arrivals ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, regardless of who is in charge. For example, AC Milan star Rafael Leao has been linked with a move to Chelsea, as has Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
In fact, reports in recent months have claimed that Chelsea were readying a player plus cash deal to sign the Nigeria international, with a huge seven-year deal being prepared, which could see Osimhen receive more than £90m in London between 2024 to 2031.
There may well be the need for additions at the back as well, especially with Thiago Silva out of contract in the summer and turning 40 years of age in September.
Chelsea make contact to sign RB Leipzig defender
According to reports in France, relayed by The Sun, Chelsea have made contact to sign RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba. The Blues have reached out over a transfer for the 21-year-old, however, RB Leipzig do not want to sell Lukeba at any cost this summer.
Castello Luekba for RB Leipzig.
The Bundesliga side are in a strong position until 2025, when a £77m release clause kicks in, with that figure dropping to £60m in 2026. Premier League rivals Manchester United are also thought to be interested in Lukeba, who joined Leipzig from Lyon last year.
The Frenchman has made 37 appearances in all competitions this season and appears to be a star in the making, with his Transfermarkt valuation now standing at a career-high €40m.
Lukeba, once described a “generational talent” in the media, has also been praised by Max Eberl, Leipzig's managing director for sport, who said: "He is left-footed and can play as a left-sided centre-back in both a back-three and a back-four. Castello’s main strengths are his tough-tackling nature, his pace, his positioning and how good he is on the ball."
£110,000-per-week star agrees to leave Chelsea with announcement soon
His future has been decided.
ByEmilio Galantini Apr 24, 2024
A move could still materialise this summer, however, a transfer may well be more likely in 2025 for £77m, but Lukeba’s development will be one to keep an eye on.
Liverpool await two emotional Premier League fixtures to close the door on Jurgen Klopp's heroic Anfield tenure but even the most optimistic of supporters will have accepted that the three-horse title race is no more.
It's been nine years of peaks and valleys; the good, the bad, and the ugly all wrapped into one rollercoaster journey that has welcomed silverware of the shiniest standard, memories of a lifetime, certain to be recalled with perfect clarity many years from now.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp
Feyenoord's Arne Slot has been all but announced as Liverpool's new head coach, and while he has big boots to fill, there is every hope that the Reds will continue to thrive as one of Europe's elite.
FSG's CEO of Football and Liverpool's new sporting director Richard Hughes have plans to sign several exciting upgrades this summer, with central defence to be addressed with haste.
Liverpool's summer transfer plans
Talk of Darwin Nunez's future on Merseyside has dominated the recent transfer chatter at Liverpool, with Barcelona interested in the Uruguayan – who has incited rumours by deleting recent Liverpool-related imagery across social media accounts.
But for all Liverpool's wastefulness, the problems stretch beyond the attack, with Liverpool's soft belly exposed far too often this season. Slot needs rearguard reinforcements.
And that's why reliable reports from Germany suggest that the Reds are interested in signing Willian Pacho from Frankfurt, who is valued at about €60m (£51m).
Frankfurt are actually keen to mark contact with the Premier League giants and this could mark a golden chance for Slot to land a highly-coveted new defender to kickstart his project.
Willian Pacho's season in numbers
Pacho, who is 22 years old, has enjoyed an excellent first season in Germany after transferring from Belgian club Royal Antwerp for about £13m, playing a big part in his side's comparatively successful season, well placed to finish sixth and secure a place in next term's Europa League.
As per Sofascore, the left-footed Pacho has completed 31 Bundesliga matches for Die Adler, keeping seven clean sheets, providing two assists, completing 85% of his passes, averaging 1.9 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 4.4 clearances and 6.7 ball recoveries per game.
Willian Pacho for Frankfurt.
This is a compelling assortment of qualities that have been blended together to make for the trappings of a leading defensive figure on the European scene – with Pacho already said to have a "big future ahead" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.
Moreover, the 6 foot 1 titan ranks among the top 6% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 18% for passes attempted, the top 22% for progressive passes, successful take-ons and tackles, the top 20% for clearances and the top 16% for blocks, as per FBref.
His ball-playing quality and elite athleticism make for the perfect tools, and it's no wonder that Liverpool have started to shift the gears ahead of the summer.
Why Liverpool should sign Willian Pacho
Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmoller said that Pacho's defending "is absolutely world-class" earlier this season, with the Ecuador international actually winning 60% of his ground duels in the German first division.
Of course, he has some distance to go before he reaches a level even close to Virgil van Dijk, who has been an imperious leader for Klopp's Liverpool this season, winning 77% of his duels in the Premier League.
Joel Matip ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Fulham back in December and will not feature again this season. The 32-year-old veteran is also out of contract this summer and it might be better to put sentiment to one side and allow Matip to depart.
That, however, leaves just injury-prone and error-prone Ibrahima Konate and unrefined talent Jarell Quansah as Van Dijk's partners in the centre of defence.
Jarell Quansah celebrates for Liverpool.
All three are high-quality players but Konate cannot burden the weight alone and Quansah's exciting rise could be sent in a spin if too heavy a weight is dumped on his shoulders.
And while he would offer depth and cover to such stars, Pacho's ability is actually as such that he could find himself cementing a place as Van Dijk's successor in the Liverpool defence.
Van Dijk is approaching his 33rd birthday and is out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. The Anfield captain may well sign a new deal but his fuel tank will not run forever and Edwards is right to have earmarked a player in Pacho who could be shaped over the coming years ahead of a future position as the leading man at centre-back.
It's hardly as if he hasn't proved himself against the best of the best either, actually triumphing magnificently against Harry Kane as his outfit thrashed Bayern Munich 5-1 earlier in the campaign, silencing the England captain, who has scored 44 goals and placed 12 assists from 45 matches since signing from Tottenham Hotspur for an initial £82m last summer.

As the table above highlights, Pacho was a tenacious and thorny presence, subduing any hapless Bayern hopes of stemming the flow from Frankfurt, winning 70% of his ground duels, making six tackles and seven clearances – all of which are far above the average expected from a defender.
Bayern were horrific on that wintry December day but this must not detract from a Herculean performance from the hosts, with Pacho the pick of the bunch in the defence as he squashed attacks and even maintained an air of positivity in possession, attempting nine long passes.

Further examination from Kane's metrics, and collation between the respective tables, illuminates just how bleak a contest the Die Roten goal machine suffered that day, wasteful in front of goal, ineffective and insubstantial in the duel and restricted to just 25 touches, completing nine passes.
Well and truly marshalled. A glimpse at Pacho's quality and how he could perform in the Premier League for Liverpool.
It's funny that Liverpool boast such an elite clutch of defensive players but have been unable to muster fitting solidity and command in the lower third.
It's funny, but Liverpool aren't laughing. With Pacho welcomed to the fold, all could change for an outfit targetting an illustrious new era.
Slot could ditch Nunez by signing "generational" £38m talent at Liverpool
This would be a real statement of intent after Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

Brasil 1 a 0.

The Pakistan coach doesn’t want the tournament to be shortened just so it can finish in June 2021

Misbah-ul-Haq speaks to the press•PCB
Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq has called for a “fair and equal” resolution to the World Test Championship when cricket finally resumes even if it means extending the tournament, warning that a shortened competition would fail to give a “true picture” of the standings. With cricket, like nearly all major sports and activities, forced to a grinding halt because of the coronavirus pandemic, one of the key questions is how to bring the inaugural World Test Championship, which is scheduled to run until June 2021, to an agreeable conclusion.Several series that are part of the Championship have been postponed over the past few weeks, with the scheduling and limited time-frame meaning it is virtually impossible to fulfil all the fixtures before the end date.”When we finally start moving back to normal life and cricket can resume, every side should get equal opportunities and the tournament shouldn’t be shortened,” Misbah said in a video press conference.”No matches should be struck off, even if that means prolonging the Championship. Every side should get the chance to play all the games they had scheduled in this cycle.Otherwise, you won’t get the true picture of what the rankings should have actually been and only some teams play all their games. That will disrupt the balance of the tournament. To me, it doesn’t matter if this goes beyond 2021 if that’s what it will take for everyone to get equal opportunities. That’s not a problem.”England’s three-match Test series in Sri Lanka and the second Test of Bangladesh’s series in Pakistan are among the most notable World Test Championship fixtures to be postponed, but it remains exceedingly likely most, if not all, cricket over the next few months won’t go ahead. That means England’s three-match Test series against West Indies and Pakistan are also in jeopardy, as is West Indies’ two-Test series against South Africa. The seasonal demands of Test cricket mean rescheduling these games before June 2021 is improbable, and if all games in the Championship are to be honoured, extending the tournament would appear to be the only solution. That would mean delaying the start of the second World Test Championship competition, due to start immediately after.Misbah also spoke about the challenges players faced trying to keep themselves fit while ensuring they stayed home, revealing the coaching staff were monitoring their progress through fitness watches.”All of our centrally contracted players and those in our wider pool are in complete contact with the coaching staff and the fitness trainer. We send them the training plans that we want them to follow and to keep ourselves in shape to the best of our abilities. We want to ensure when cricket resumes, the physical conditions of our players should be the same as it was before and meets the demands of international cricket.”We have groups online where we check in with players on how they think they’re doing. We share plans with them on the exercise regimen to follow even if they don’t have access to gym facilities.”Because we can’t practice on the ground, what we can do is make sure we do our homework properly. That goes both for me and the players. We look at the last couple of series we played there and how England played in the last season at home. We analyse what we can do better so as soon we get the opportunity, we hit the ground running. He did have a few choice words for Sharjeel Khan, acknowledging he had the ability to be an explosive asset in T20 cricket, but expressed disappointment with his fitness levels.”He has the strike rate you’ll need at the top of the order at the World T20, especially against pace bowling on Australian pitches. But I think Sharjeel needs to work harder. He’s emerged back onto the scene after such a long time, so the one thing he could have ensured was his fitness, the one thing he could control, was up to the mark.”If you’re serious about making a comeback, the you should have been in perfect physical shape. If he thinks he can come into the side without having made any changes, then selecting him would be an injustice to the other players. I wasn’t satisfied to see that at all. Now that there’s no cricket, he should be thinking day and night he needs to become super fit.”
