Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing an "exceptional" Premier League player, but their huge rivals are also keen on snapping him up.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of players in the last few weeks, but as things stand, no incoming January transfer business has been completed.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is arguably a surprise target for Newcastle, with a recent report suggesting he could be an option to come in before the end of the month, while Atalanta ace Teun Koopmeiners is also reportedly wanted by them.

Young FC Nurnberg attacker Can Uzun has also been backed to make a move to St James' Park, perhaps being seen as more of a long-term acquisition, and Club Brugge starlet Antonio Nusa is another youngster who is of interest to them, as they rival Spurs for his signature.

Elsewhere, Morgan Gibbs-White is being looked at as a possible replacement for Miguel Amiron, should he move on, with the Englishman enjoying another impressive season for Nottingham Forest.

According to a fresh claim from HITC, Newcastle want to sign Manchester United youngster Omari Forson, but rivals Sunderland are also interested.

"Manchester United are ‘surprised’ about their shock fight to keep Omari Forson now he has rejected a new contract, HITC Football understands, amid interest from Newcastle United.

"HITC Football understands that the North East trio of Middlesbrough, Newcastle United and Sunderland are among the clubs keen on the highly-rated teenager. But Manchester United have not given up their hopes of retaining Forson following his recent senior breakthrough."

At just 19 years of age, Forson is still such a young player, and the fact that United want him to sign a new deal at the club speaks volumes about his ceiling.

He has rejected an extension, however, as the report states, suggesting that he could be eyeing a move elsewhere. The teenage attacker has been lauded by United academy director Nick Cox, who has said of him in the past:

"On the pitch he was part of our successful FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2022. Interestingly, Omari didn’t feature heavily in the cup run but showed exceptional resilience, and that’s a reminder that the journey isn’t always smooth and straightforward.

For Newcastle to acquire the services of a prized asset at one of their Premier League rivals would feel like a coup, not to mention that beating Sunderland to his signature would make it extra sweet.

The era of Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly's takeover isn't exactly bringing on-field success with it, despite serious investment off the field, with Pochettino also failing to sheer the Chelsea ship to higher ground so far.

The west Londoners have now slumped into the bottom half of the Premier League table with every side above them boasting a better defensive record. There have been reports that Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali even wants to replace Pochettino with Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen, with the Blues boss also admitting his job is far from safe.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has been signed by Belfast Titans for the inaugural Euro T20 Slam that begins next month. Du Plessis was picked as a supplementary player, a week after the tournament’s player draft and will join a team that also includes Shahid Afridi, JP Duminy and Colin Ingram. Du Plessis has previously turned out for franchises in the Big Bash League, the Caribbean Premier League, the Indian Premier League, the Mzansi Super League and the Twenty20 Cup in England.However, with South Africa set to tour India in September and October, du Plessis may not be available for the whole tournament. The Euro T20 Slam, will be played between August 30 and September 22 in Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands.Du Plessis had a mixed World Cup. He was South Africa’s highest run-getter in the tournament, with 387 runs including a hundred and three fifties, but the team’s campaign never got off the ground. Early losses put them out of contention for a semi-final spot and they eventually finished in seventh place with three wins in the tournament.

With Everton still facing the very real prospect of Premier League relegation, the focus has naturally been on those who could jump a sinking ship at Goodison Park, rather than those who may arrive in the summer. However, if the Toffees do avoid the drop come May, then they could reportedly move to sign a Europa League winner.

As much as Sean Dyche will be pleased with the form of Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite this season, that form could come at a cost for the former Burnley manager. According to reports, Arsenal are interested in signing Onana this summer and Everton, if they are relegated, may be forced to watch on as the Belgian departs.

The same can be said for Branthwaite, who has reportedly attracted the interest of Tottenham Hotspur and even European giants Real Madrid in what could be a dream move for the central defender. The sales could at least help the Toffees reinforce their squad though, and avoid another Financial Fair Play punishment whilst doing so. Those at Goodison Park have already been charged twice this season, with the first resulting in a 10-point deduction and the second punishment still awaiting.

Among the players who could come in potentially using money gained through sales is Filip Kostic. According to TuttoJuve, Everton are interested in signing Kostic this summer, beating West Ham United and clubs in Saudi Arabia to the winger's signature in the process. The deal wouldn't come with a hefty fee, either, with Juventus reportedly willing to accept deals between €10m to €15m (£9m to £13m).

Kostic, now 31 years of age, is a player with plenty of experience to add to Everton's left-hand side currently occupied by Dwight McNeil, having previously played for Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the Europa League to earn Juventus' interest.

If Everton avoid relegation this season, then their attention should turn towards a solid mid-table finish and beyond in the next campaign. After all, without their 10-point deduction this season, they would be sitting comfortably nine points clear of the dropzone. Adding a player who's performed on the European stage in the form of Kostic would certainly play a part in achieving that goal too.

The winger was handed plenty of praise during his Frankfurt days, including from former teammate Kevin Trapp, who labelled Kostic a "mentality monster". Whilst the 29-year-old has stuttered at times since joining Juventus, Kostic's stats at Frankfurt speak for themselves about just how good he can be when at his best.

A deal worth under £20m, Everton could even land an underrated bargain if they manage to fend off interest from the likes of West Ham and secure Kostic's signature this summer.
