World Cup ace praised by Redknapp would much rather join Arsenal in January

It is believed a 2022 World Cup ace would rather join Arsenal over another major club, which may well come as a boost for manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal facing January transfer window hurdles

After spending north of £200 million last summer, this January window could prove challenging for sporting director Edu, who is tasked with helping to bolster the Arsenal squad this month.

Arsenal table bid for in-form striker who Brentford wanted to replace Toney

There’s been a twist in Edu’s search for a new number nine.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 12, 2024

It's been reported the north Londoners will have a slightly more limited kitty due to their lavish spending last year, with Financial Fair Play rules also proving a key factor in this.

This has put up roadblocks in Arsenal's pursuit of Brentford star Ivan Toney, who was widely linked as a top transfer target heading into the winter.

Arteta is said to want upgrades in a good few key areas of his squad, with the Spaniard keen on two new full-backs, a striker and midfielder (Miguel Delaney). However, due to their financial limitations, Arsenal may have to be clever in how they go about their business.

Indeed, Arteta may have to compromise on a few of the aforementioned wishes, but that isn't to say Arsenal don't still have some money to play with.

Some reports claim a Gunners bid has been tabled for Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, while journalist Sacha Tavolieri recently lifted the lid on their serious interest in Everton star Amadou Onana. The 22-year-old has made 16 league appearances so far as a mainstay under Sean Dyche, and he could be considered one of their key squad members.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

A colossal presence in midfield, standing at around 6 foot 4, Onana could come as a wonderful alternative to Thomas Partey – who has suffered from a plague of injury problems this season.

As well as Arsenal contending for Onana, there is a belief Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea side are also firm admirers of the Belgian.

Onana prefers Arsenal over Chelsea

However, in some good news for the Gunners, TEAMtalk claim that Onana would prefer to join Arsenal over Chelsea if he were to go anywhere in January. The former Lille star, who featured for Belgium at the World Cup in Qatar, is making a name for himself as one of the English top flight's most promising midfield men.

He's already been tipped to go to the very top by Jamie Redknapp, who told Sky Sports that Onana also has the characteristics a "leader".

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

“The one I think I’m probably most excited by is Onana,” said Redknapp (via HITC). “I think he’s still adjusting but he shows glimpses of being a really top midfield player.

“This is no disrespect to Everton but he’s one that I’m sure the top six clubs, they’ll already have him on their radar, he’s got that ability. He’s such a leader."

Journalist Antonio Mango, taking to X, has also suggested that his terrific performances are going "under the radar" right now.

Tom Latham will captain a shadow New Zealand squad in their three World Cup warm-up matches against Australia in Brisbane next month. With nine of the World Cup 15 playing in the IPL and Ross Taylor signing a deal with Nottinghamshire, the 13-man squad for the trip across the Tasman includes just five of the players who will be heading to England later in May.Latham is joined by Henry Nicholls, Matt Henry, Jimmy Neesham and Tom Blundell from those named in the World Cup squad. While Australia, who name their World Cup squad on Monday, will call back IPL players for the three matches, New Zealand allow their players a full stint in India and are using the time in Brisbane as a chance for fringe players to impress. Apart from Will Young all the squad have international experience.”It’s an exciting challenge ahead of this group who I know will relish the chance to take on the Australians at home,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “The matches will be a stern test and provide quality preparation for those players bound for England and a great opportunity for the rest of the squad to show their wares.”Tim Seifert, who narrowly missed the cut for the World Cup when Blundell was preferred as back-up wicketkeeper, was not considered for the trip due to his finger injury. Adam Milne and Corey Anderson, both part of the 2015 World Cup, are also injured.Todd Astle, who lost out to Ish Sodhi in the main squad, will head to Brisbane as will Doug Bracewell who would be a possible World Cup call-up if any of the incumbent allrounders got injured. The three matches, which won’t be official ODIs, taken place on May 5, 7 and 9 at Allan Border Field.

Pakistan have made strides but fielding a 'real worry' – Mickey Arthur

Mohammad Amir still in contention for World Cup after recovering from chicken pox, says coach

Mickey Arthur, the Pakistan coach, has admitted that the team’s fielding is a “real worry” going into the World Cup.Arthur felt the standard of fielding was the key difference between the sides in the five-match ODI series between England and Pakistan, which the home side won 4-0. But he insisted that his side was “working damn hard” to improve and felt that Pakistan’s batting – they reached 340 three times in four matches – gave them “a fair amount of positives” to take despite the scoreline. In particular, he felt the introduction of a couple of new players – who hadn’t been part of the regime that had worked hard on improving Pakistan’s fielding over the last couple of years – might have resulted in the standards dipping.”Our fielding has been very disappointing,” Arthur said. “That’s been the massive difference between the two sides. If you look at the games in Southampton and Nottingham, going into the last five overs, it was anybody’s game. We competed really well. The one difference has been our fielding and that’s a real worry for me because we are putting a hell of a lot of effort into it. And there’s not a massive amount of reward for us there at the moment. We’ll just keep knocking away at it to make sure we get it up to speed.”We have a couple of new, young players who weren’t part of the regime previously. We are trying to bring them up to speed as quickly as we can. It’s something that hasn’t gone unnoticed with us and it’s something we are disappointed about. We need to do a bit of work on that, for sure.”Fielding is about attitude and wanting to get out there and get it done. Our boys’ attitude has been outstanding through this series. They know they’ve been short in this department and they are not happy about it. They are working damn hard at it.”Despite his disappointment in that area – and, to some extent, the bowling performances, Arthur remained “very confident with the players we’ve got”.”We sit here having taken a huge amount of positives out of this series,” he said. “I thought our batting has gone to another level. I thought we batted extremely well.”Our bowling has been average at best and our fielding has been average at best but we’ve batted really well. People, coming to England, said we were a 280 team. We’ve dispelled that and that’s given our batting unit a massive amount of confidence. I’m taking a fair amount of positives in that department.”The other thing is we’ve played against a team who are No.1 in the world in their own conditions. There’s not too many teams who will arrive in England as prepared as we are in terms of the competition we’ve played against and match fitness.”We’ve got a couple of days now to regroup, two warm-up games and then we’ll go. I’m very, very confident with the players we’ve got. We need to sharpen up on a couple of disciplines but we’ll certainly get there. We’ll be good.”While Arthur declined to confirm the make-up of Pakistan’s final 15-man squad, he did say that Mohammad Amir was sufficiently recovered from chickenpox to be considered available for selection.”Mohammad Amir trained yesterday for the first time,” Arthur said. “It’s the first time he was allowed to train. He had 25 minutes on a bike and then a gym session. He had another one today so, if he’s selected, he will be ready to go.”

Tottenham could move for 24 y/o forward despite already signing Werner

Journalist Graeme Bailey has suggested that Tottenham are candidates to sign an "exciting" 24-year-old forward despite already bringing in Timo Werner.

Spurs sign Werner and chase Antonio Nusa

The north Londoners could make multiple new additions in the attacking areas this month, and have already sealed a loan deal for Werner.

Spurs set sights on "born footballer" after Nusa as Levy eyes rising star

The Lilywhites are set to continue chasing Europe’s most promising young players.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 25, 2024

The former Chelsea star, who's temporary move includes an option to make it permanent later this year, made his debut in Tottenham's 2-2 draw against Man United 11 days ago. Werner adds both versatility and extra quality to Ange Postecoglou's final third, and the Lilywhites will be hoping he can replicate the kind of form which saw Chelsea once spend £47.5 million on his capture.

Meanwhile, another forward who Tottenham are widely believed to be chasing is Club Brugge sensation Antonio Nusa.

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

The north Londoners opened talks to sign Nusa in a buy-to-loan-back deal last week, with the plan being to secure his signature and send him back to Belgium for the rest of 2023/2024. After these developments, it is now believed Spurs could still add another option further up the field, as journalist Graeme Bailey suggests in a report for HITC.

Tottenham could still sign Jota despite agreeing Werner deal

Indeed, as per his information, Spurs could yet to be contenders to end Jota's nightmare spell at Al-Ittihad.

The 24-year-old is apparently keen to leave Saudi Arabia, and has not even been registered in Al-Ittihad's domestic squad for the rest of the season.

Celtic's former forward Jota.

Despite already bringing in Werner, Bailey hints that Tottenham could still be interested in signing Jota. It is believed Postecoglou is a big admirer of the Portuguese, who dazzled under his tutelage when the pair worked together at Celtic.

West Ham, Everton, Brighton and Newcastle United are named as other suitors for the winger, who former Spurs right-back Alan Hutton also holds in very high esteem.

"He's (Jota) probably only going to get better, I think he can get better," said the Scotsman to Football Insider. "What he's done this season has been incredible, for him to come from his parent club, where he's not really been playing. Benfica are a big club in their own right but to come to another club where there's a lot of pressure, to perform at such a young age, he's stood up to that task.

“Jota's that player fans want to see. He's exciting, he takes people on, he makes things happen, he scores goals and ticks all the boxes."

The forward bagged 11 goals and 11 assists during his final season at Parkhead, before eventually making the move to Saudi.

Past success could return to haunt Hathurusingha

He is ostensibly head coach of Sri Lanka but, weirdly, it is on the opposition that bears the clearer marks of Hathurusingha’s influence

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Bristol11-Jun-20193:14

Dilshan: The main goal for Sri Lanka should be to bat 50 overs

Whatever else you might say about Chandika Hathurusingha, the man does not do incognito. If you have paid him any attention over the past few years, chances are you have an opinion. More than likely, it is mighty sharp.”He has great cricket knowledge,” is something people say of him. Well that one, almost everybody can agree on. But what about: “He is a great coach”? This is not so universally held.If you are a Hathurusingha hater, you probably hail from Bangladesh or Sri Lanka. His tenure at New South Wales did not seem to prompt such polarising opinions. In much higher profile roles in South Asia, though, where sports meld with politics, and cricket plays a role in the national wellbeing (more true for some South Asian states than others), he has been an unapologetic ruffler of feathers.A month into his job, in Bangladesh, the superstar in the team, Shakib Al Hasan, was suspended for some months for “serious misbehaviour” with the coach. In Sri Lanka, Hathurusingha was part of a decision to sack Angelo Mathews as captain, and axe him from the limited-overs sides entirely over fitness issues last September. It was the selection committee, then headed by Graeme Labrooy, that finalised that call, but months later, Mathews’ relationship with Hathurusingha had soured to the extent that in the course of batting an entire Test-match day in Wellington, Mathews dropped to the ground, completed a set of press-ups after and gestured pointedly towards the dressing room. It was only a little more polite than flipping the bird.ALSO READ: Nuwan Pradeep ruled out of Bangladesh game after blow to bowling handAnd yet, can you argue with Hathurusingha’s results? On his watch, Bangladesh made the knockouts in a World Cup for the first time, beat India and South Africa in ODI series at home, defeated Sri Lanka in an away Test, and made the semi-final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. In general, they became a serious force in world cricket for the first time. Specific players may have had grouses; Mahmudullah was dropped for the 100th Test – the one they won in Colombo – and Mominul Haque was edged out of the Test side. But if you try to argue that Hathurusingha did not leave Bangladesh (or should that be abandon Bangladesh?) in an immeasurably better place than he found them, then friend, you have let your Hathu-hate get the better of you.Among the cornerstones to his success in Bangladesh, Hathurusingha felt, was his insistence that he be part of the selection committee. “If I’m responsible for the fortunes of the team, I should be given the power to choose it,” has been his reasoning. Sri Lanka Cricket, who had practically pleaded with Hathurusingha to be their coach for three years, had initially allowed him this.Dimuth Karunaratne steers the ball into the off side•PA Images via Getty Images

But here’s the thing, Hathu: SLC is an untameable beast. He had the SLC board president on-side in his first few months in charge of Sri Lanka, just as he had done practically throughout his Bangladesh stint. But what if the SLC head is himself so plugged into the nation’s political machinations, that the moment the governmental weather changed, that SLC president was ousted by judicial writ? Late last year, Hathurusingha lost his allies in administration, and with them the guarantee that he could have his way with the side. In February, following Sri Lanka’s modest tour of New Zealand and their woeful Tests in Australia, he was in serious danger of being sacked by the governmental arm that had installed itself in place of a regular board. And so we come to Bristol at the World Cup, where Hathurusingha is ostensibly head coach of Sri Lanka but, weirdly, it is on the opposition that bears the clearer marks of his influence. Even his critics in Bangladesh would concede that it was under Hathurusingha that this team developed the steel required to win; that it was on his watch that they began to seize key moments, the way they’d done in the victory against South Africa last week. During the Hathu years, Tamim Iqbal had become more consistent, Soumya Sarkar had begun to flourish, Mustafizur Rahman was thrown in and adorned, Mehidy Hasan got a start, and even Mahmudullah hit those back-to-back World Cup tons.Compare this to the Sri Lanka side, which was in turmoil long before Hathurusingha arrived, and has not ceased to be in flux despite his best efforts. Last year, Hathurusingha had elevated Dinesh Chandimal to leadership, and then the selectors changed, and now Chandimal has barely been heard from for months. Captain, instead, is Dimuth Karunaratne – a man Hathurusingha seems happy to work with especially following the historic Test win in South Africa, but not one he would have ideally chosen for such honours. Save, perhaps, for Thisara Perera, there is no one in this ODI side that appears visibly altered by Hathurusingha’s 18-month presence.A good run at the World Cup could be key to changing all that. The historic Test win in South Africa, to which Hathurusingha did genuinely contribute, bought him goodwill, but it is limited-overs advances that will swing open the door those victories propped ajar. Sri Lanka still have Australia, England and India to play, so the match on Tuesday is virtually must-win. For the coach, a defeat might be a haunting by his own past successes, but nothing no one didn’t expect. But if a victory helps light up Sri Lanka’s campaign, maybe the team will switch to a smoother track. Perhaps Hathurusingha could still become the kind of transformer for Sri Lanka he once was for Bangladesh.
