Celtic fans slam Rangers chairman Dave King for latest statement

Rangers chairman Dave King has called for an independent investigation into SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan and his business links with Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

The Light Blues chief has also called for MacLennan’s suspension while such an investigation takes place, stating that ‘the credibility of Scottish Football in the minds of supporters and sponsors is at stake and urgent action is required.’

As reported by The Daily Record, the SPFL are adamant there is no conflict of interest.

It’s the latest in a long season of incendiary statements from the Ibrox chairman, with opposition fans growing increasingly amused with each new one that is released.

It’s also the second time in the last week alone that King has called for a probe into Scottish football’s governing bodies.

Celtic fans have reacted about as you’d expect, plenty with humour and others with sheer amazement given the Rangers chairman’s previous clashes with the powers that be in Scottish football.

Newcastle fans react as Rafa Benitez is linked with the Spain job

It was announced on Tuesday that Spain manager Julen Lopetegui had been appointed as the new Real Madrid boss, and Newcastle United fans have been quick to react to the prospect of Rafa Benitez being in contention to replace him, a rumour reported by the Daily Express on Wednesday morning.

The Daily Express says that the Magpies chief will be “under serious consideration” for the role having previously managed Real and Liverpool, and having been linked with the job before Lopetegui got it in 2016.

The 58-year-old’s future at St James’ Park is still far from certain as he waits to be backed in the transfer market by owner Mike Ashley before committing his future to the Tyneside outfit, with his current deal due to expire next summer.

Newcastle supporters, who have been quick to react to a big development on a striker target with one saying “Charnley is on it lads”, took to social media to give their thoughts on the story, and while one said it “will be peak NUFC if that happens”, another said “I just can’t imagine him as an international manager”.

Stephen Gleeson has the playing experience to help improve Aberdeen’s midfield

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Aberdeen are closing in on the signing of midfielder Stephen Gleeson after his short spell at English Championship side Ipswich Town came to an end.

What’s the story?

The Dons are in need of quality midfield recruitment this summer after the departures of Kenny McLean and Ryan Christie.

Their aim will again be finishing second ahead of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership and attempting to win either of the cup competitions, making this summer an important one, especially in the face of the Light Blues embarking on a renewed signing spree.

One player that could be arriving at Pittodrie is midfielder Stephen Gleeson.

That’s according to The Scottish Sun, who report that the 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international is on the verge of signing up with Derek McInnes.

Is he the kind of player they should be targeting?

[ad_pod ]

What does he offer Aberdeen?

Gleeson may not have a stand-out direct goal contribution in his career so far, but he is an experienced midfielder who has been trusted to perform consistently at the level Aberdeen are looking for.

He’s spent the last four seasons in the Championship with Birmingham and Ipswich, making 130 appearances in the competition in total. That, alongside with many more years in League One and League Two demonstrates he is of a capable enough standard to play in the Scottish Premiership.

On a free transfer, it’s risk-free and could end up being a very shrewd bit of business from Derek McInnes.

These Manchester United fans don’t want to sign Willian this summer

Some Manchester United fans are not impressed with a potential move for Chelsea attacker Willian this summer, after watching his latest performances in the World Cup.

The Brazilian international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months, although clearly in his involvement in the summer tournament is delaying any imminent movements.

He’s featured in all three of Brazil’s group matches so far but has yet to register a goal or assist, perhaps not providing the kind of attacking threat that is expected of him at the elite level.

Last season at club level was more productive for the 29-year-old however, scoring 13 goals in all competitions, also creating 8 assists in a Chelsea shirt.

That makes him a potentially attractive option for Manchester United, but some supporters are not wholly convinced he would be a good signing for Jose Mourinho.

These fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on a potential deal…

West Ham consider move for Weghorst

According to RTV Oost, West Ham United are one of a number of clubs interested in signing AZ Alkmaar forward Wout Weghorst in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Bringing a new striker to the London Stadium is believed to be a priority for West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

[ad_pod ]

It would be fair to say that the Hammers were too reliant on Marko Arnautovic in the second half of last season, while the futures of Javier Hernandez and Andy Carroll are up in the air.

According to RTV Oost, West Ham have been impressed with the performances of 25-year-old Weghorst, who scored 27 times in 37 appearances for his Dutch outfit last term.

Weghorst, who has also made three appearances for Netherlands in 2018, is widely expected to leave AZ this summer, although a number of Bundesliga clubs are also said to be in the race.

What are Weghorst’s credentials?

Standing at 6ft 6in, Weghorst is an absolute mountain of a man. Strong in the air and boasting a fierce strike, he has the potential to be a star in the Premier League.

There are plenty of examples of Dutch forwards that have struggled in English football, but Weghost’s record of 45 goals in 86 appearances for AZ simply cannot be ignored.

Valued at £6.3m by transfermarkt.co.uk, it is unlikely that West Ham would have to break the bank for the striker, and his arrival could finally signal the end of Carroll’s career at the London Stadium.

Carroll, who was linked with Chelsea in January, only managed three goals in 16 Premier League appearances for the Hammers last term during another frustrating season.

The 29-year-old could well be deemed surplus to requirements by Pellegrini this summer, and the arrival of Weghorst – if the move occurs – would surely push the Englishman out of the door.

Why West Ham fans must keep the faith this season

In somewhat tradition style for the Upton Park faithful this season, the 2015/16 campaign has certainly begun in rather unpredictable circumstances to say the very least. Such a mixture of shock delight and unforeseen frustration has now become a distinct way of life for long-term Hammers fans once again beginning the new term in more than precarious fashion.

From the opening day victory over Arsenal at the Emirates, to two back-to-back home losses against Leicester City and AFC Bournemouth respectively, West Ham’s last season at the Boleyn Ground couldn’t have really offered up much more of a jumbled up start to the league proceedings if it had tried.

However, with thoughts of that impressive away win against the Gunners well and truly buried in the past for most West Ham fans out there, Slaven Bilic now has to deal with the unmistakable atmosphere of doubt that has crept over Upton Park in light of the club’s latest defeats.

[ffc-gal cat=”west-ham” no=”5″]

So then, should the east-enders already be missing Big Sam Allardyce in the dug-out just three games into the 2015/16 campaign, or will Slaven Bilic ultimately steer the club to brighter pastures this term given enough time and confidence?

Well, if last weekend’s performance is to provide a sign of things to come for West Ham this year, then the Upton Park faithful will certainly have a lot to worry about in their final campaign at their spiritual home. The defensive mistakes made against Bournemouth last time out were undoubtedly shocking – especially as they were mainly perpetrated by two of last season’s most consistent performers, Aaron Cresswell and Carl Jenkinson.

Both players looked as if they had never even played at the back before considering how poor their individual performances were against the Cherries – but even though Big Sam may have somewhat enjoyed his former club’s calamitous showing on Match of the Day last Saturday – perhaps his previous influence at West Ham may still be causing the side problems going into the new season.

Slaven Bilic has been drafted in at Upton Park this term with the task of improving the team’s entertainment factor throughout the upcoming campaign. Yes, results can be considered the most important aspect of being a Premier League manager in the modern era, but Hammers fans ultimately want to see more from their team than simply aiming for the points above all else.

Because Bilic is trying to establish a much more defined footballing philosophy from his side this campaign, doing so with a squad that has largely been subscribed to the Sam Allardyce school of thought for four seasons simply won’t happen overnight. Rome wasn’t built in a day of course, so if West Ham supporters really want to see an improved approach form their side in the next few years, they have to be willing to give Slaven Bilic enough time to implement such a transformation in ideas.

Whilst both Carl Jenkinson and Aaron Cresswell proved solid assets for Big Sam in the full-back department last term, their somewhat lacking technical ability has so far been exposed under the team’s new way of going about their business. Hammers fans need to allow Slaven Bilic the freedom to iron out such kinks within his ranks if West Ham are to prove worthy of playing in London’s Olympic Stadium next season.

However, if the current boss at Upton Park somehow wants to offer Kevin Nolan more first team opportunities at the club with the captain’s armband strapped to his side, then Slaven Bilic may as well consider packing his bags now. Under no circumstances should the 33-year-old be playing for West Ham anymore. He’s obviously a fine skipper, a strong leader and a good man by all accounts – but none of that actually matters when the player himself can no longer offer anything to the team.

Bilic’s decision to start Nolan last time out was a clear step in the wrong direction, even if the result wasn’t entirely of the former Bolton man’s own making. However, sometimes adjusting to a new squad of players takes a bit of time behind the scenes and sacrifice out on the pitch for things to eventually work out in the end.

Therefore, whilst Slaven Bilic has certainly made a few errors during the initial stages of his West Ham managerial career so far, Hammers fans would be mad to want to see the back of the stylish Croatian already this term.

After all, the fact that Sam Allardyce is no longer at the club is more than enough reason for West Ham supporters to remain positive this season!

Mad FIFA 16 realism, Liverpool star returns and Man United hero flops

This weekend’s installment of Super Sunday was always up against it after some rather incredible, dramatic and frankly ridiculous scenes during Saturday’s Premier League fixtures.

But the snoozier, laid-back sister to Saturday’s action, this week featuring Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace, Southampton vs Manchester United and Liverpool vs Norwich City, certainly had it’s moments – moments which inevitably sent social media into a habitual football frenzy.

Indeed, whether they were following Spurs’ 1-0 win over the Eagles, courtesy of an inaugural goal from Heung Min Son, watching Louis van Gaal outwit his his old nemesis Ronald Koeman via an Anthony Martial brace or witnessing Liverpool put in another underwhelming performance against rank and file opposition, there was plenty of material for avid Twitterites to turn into memes, vines and general bantz.

Being amongst the Twitter big dogs ourselves, Football Fancast have compressed today’s best social media moments into one gallery, jam-packed with humour and hilarity. So without further ado…

Five bosman-bound bargains Liverpool should target in January

When the European Court of Justice passed the Bosman ruling in 1995, courtesy of Jean-Marc Bosman, it changed the beautiful game forever.

Indeed, the allowing of footballers to move freely between teams upon the expiration of their contracts shifted power away from clubs and into the hands of the players – meaning they could hold employers to ransom during wage negotiations.

But it also created a new, incredibly cheap sector of the transfer market, letting clubs sign players on ‘free transfers’ without having to spend a penny or alternatively snap them up a couple of months early with a nominal fee involved.

With that in mind, Football Fancast have been taking a look at some of European football’s biggest stars whose contracts expire at the end of the season, in the hope of finding a few bargains for the Premier League’s top clubs.

This article focuses on Liverpool, who have the option of making a small bid in January for these FIVE suggestions or entering pre-contract negotiations over a move at the end of the season.

SOFIANE FEGHOULI

Liverpool’s squad lacks an out-and-out wide man and Valencia’s Sofiane Feghouli fits the bill perfectly.

Although the Algerian international’s output isn’t exactly outstanding, claiming six goals and six assists in 33 La Liga appearances last season, his pace, power and tricky always creates opportunities in the final third.

Now aged 25 and into his sixth season at the Mestalla, Feghouli’s game could reach a significantly higher level over the next few years – which is why Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have all taken an interest in his potential availability over the last few months.

Liverpool’s need for a winger is greater than all of the aforementioned clubs, however, and they can probably offer Feghouli greater assurances over game-time as a consequence.

But Valencia are still optimistic of extending the 5 foot 10 attacker’s contract past the end of the season, so the Reds may have to settle for signing Feghouli in the summer.

JOEL MATIP

Jurgen Klopp is more than acquainted with Joel Matip from his Bundesliga days and could soon find himself taking an interest in the Schalke defender, should Dejan Lovren fail to perform in the injury absence of Mamadou Sakho.

The Cameroon international has spent much of his career filling in as an ever-dependable utility man, slotting in at full-back, defensive midfield or centre-back when required, but appears to have now made the centre-half position his own at the Veltins Arena, registering 14 outings there this season.

Measuring in at a lofty 6 foot 4, sheer athleticism is the 24-year-old’s defining trait. He’s quick, agile and threatening in the air, resulting in averages of 1.3 tackles, 3.3 interceptions, 5.1 clearances and 4.1 successful aerial duels per match this term.

Schalke will be desperate to hold onto a defender who has been at the club since eight years of age, especially now that he’s emerging as one of their most consistent performers. But the Miners haven’t tied him down to a new deal yet and should the situation remain in the same in January, they’ll undoubtedly be tempted to cash in.

STEVE MANDANDA

The jury’s still out on Simon Mignolet, which says quite a lot considering the Liverpool No.1 is now three seasons and 110 appearances into his Anfield career. One Bosman-bound replacement comes in the form of Marseille’s Steve Mandanda, who has hinted he wants to try a new challenge once his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old is unquestionably one of the top goalkeepers in Ligue 1, having thrice claimed the division’s Goalkeeper of the Year award and amassed 20 caps for France, despite facing formidable competition from Hugo Lloris throughout his international career.

With 368 club appearances and 53 Champions League outings under his belt, the 6 foot 1 shot-stopper is certainly a safe pair of hands. He would add a much-needed sense of experience and composure to Liverpool’s often chaotic backline.

Bosman departures have become a recurring trend for Marseille – Andre-Pierre Gignac and Andre Ayew both left in the summer – and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Mandanda follow suit should L’OM’s poor start to the season continue. They’re currently in 13th place – nine points off the Champions League spots.

ALVARO ARBELOA

Former Red Alvaro Arbeloa has been linked with a return to Anfield several times throughout his Real Madrid career, but it could finally happen within the next two transfer windows with his contract now into its ultimate twelve months.

The epitome of unsung hero, Arbeloa has rarely claimed the headlines during his tenures with Los Blancos and the Spanish national team, yet his influence has clearly been positive with a World Cup, two European Championships, two Copa del Reys, a La Liga title and a Champions League title on his CV.

Aged 32, Arbeloa offers an abundance of experience in addition to great versatility, having featured in both full-back positions and at centre-half during his seven seasons with the La Liga giants.

You can’t imagine Liverpool’s transfer committee being too happy about signing a player verging upon his declining years who is used to being paid high-end Champions League wages.

But the 56-cap Spaniard would add great depth, experience and leadership to the Anfield squad and could prove to be an invaluable asset for Jurgen Klopp.

EZEQUIEL LAVEZZI

Linking Ezequiel Lavezzi with a move to Liverpool has almost become a running joke in the tabloids, a running joke that has lasted for the best part of two years.

But the Argentina international certainly suits Jurgen Klopp’s ‘gegenpressing’ philosophy, as a winger-forward famed for his industriousness and Albicelestial tenacity, whilst possessing the Champions League-standard attacking quality the Reds currently lack.

Indeed, the 30-year-old has scored 34 goals in 154 appearances for the Parisians, despite often being limited to opportunities for the bench, and has a knack for pulling off the occasional sublime – his goal against Chelsea last season being one of the more memorable examples.

Once again, the transfer committee may frown upon Lavezzi’s age and wage demands, but he represents the Luis-Suarez-esque presence in attack they’ve lacked since the South American left for Barcelona in summer 2014. Likewise, on a free transfer certainly represents a bit of a coup.

Arsenal, Tottenham & Liverpool to win… weekend betting preview

With 15 games down, we’re now officially settled into the season. Up and down the division there have been interesting stories, ranging from Leicester topping the table to champions Chelsea looking over their shoulder anxiously towards the relegation zone.

And as if this wasn’t interesting enough, you can make this weekend’s fixtures even more intriguing by sticking some cash on proceedings. With that in mind, here are TitanBet’s best odds for the coming games…

Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool to win…

You may be putting your faith in three teams to have played midweek European football against a trio who have been resting, but with Arsenal facing rock-bottom Aston Villa, Liverpool at home to West Brom and Spurs hosting a struggling Newcastle unit, it would not be a shock to see this triple come home.

TitanBet are offering 9/2 on this one.

Money back if Bournemouth don’t beat Bournemouth

Manchester United are grinding out results, Champions League loss at Wolfsburg aside, and look in good shape to beat, or at least get a draw, against a the Cherries. Bournemouth may have beaten Chelsea, but getting two marquee results in seven days is a big ask. Thus, betting on either a draw or win for the travelling side makes sense, and even if the South Coast unit do make it six points from their last two matches, you won’t be out of pocket.

Money back from TitanBet if Manchester United don’t win.

Money back if Ozil gets an assist or goal

To round it off we have another Arsenal-based offer as the Gunners travel to rock-bottom Aston Villa. Mesut Ozil has been an assist machine this season with 12 in league action and seems to have been given greater license to break forward with Alexis Sanchez out of action, so, against the worst side in the division, he is likely to be involved heavily in the final third. This seems to be a safe game to bet on regardless of which way you see it going.

Money back from TitanBet if Ozil scores and assists

Seven facts you NEED to know about Watford vs Manchester City

Watford host title chasing Manchester City in the evening kickoff today, as the home side continue to impress under Quique Sanchez Flores. The Spaniard has steered the newly promoted Hornets to an impressive ninth position and lay just two points outside of the top five at the start of the day.

Having wiped the floor with Liverpool at Vicarage Road, the Hertfordshire side will be going in to today’s game with all the confidence in the world.

They will be looking to put the gut wrenching loss against Tottenham behind them this evening and will want to take advantage of a Manchester City who have suffered bouts of travel sickness this season.

The Etihad outfit have recorded NO wins in their last SIX away games, with three defeats and as many bore draws. However, they remain one of the top sides in the league and the plethora of attacking talent available to manager Manuel Pellegrini is the envy of most on the continent.

BLANK SLATE (SO FAR)

Star City striker Sergio Aguero is rightly one of the most feared marksman in the Premier League, though the Argentine has drawn a blank against 5 of the 28 different teams he’s faced in the competition.

That’s right, you guessed it, the Hornets are indeed one of them.

UNHAPPY MEMORIES

Football – Manchester City Press Conference – Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England – 4/11/14Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini during the press conferenceMandatory Credit: Action Images / Jason CairnduffLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY.

The aforementioned bouts of travel sickness that Man City seem to suffer are not without precedent, though it has been awhile since such misfortune (largely due to the money spent).

Should they fail to win today, they will have gone SEVEN successive Premier League away games without a win for the first time since September to December 2009.

NOT SO HAPPY HOME

Fans and pundits alike have waxed lyrical about just how well the Hornets are playing this season, and rightly so of course. However, it’s not been as smooth sailing as some might suggest and perhaps some Premier League teething problems still linger.

Watford have lot 4 games on their own turf this season, with only West Brom and relegation threatened Sunderland and Aston Villa having worse records.

NEW YEAR, SAME OLD?

The New Year tends to be a festive period for all, Manchester City especially. They have won their opening match of the new year in an impressive EIGHT of the last NINE season. The only exception was the 1-0 reversal to Sunderland on January 1st 2012.

No New Years Eve hangover for the City boys it seems.

HISTORY MAKER

Odion Ighalo has been one the success stories of the season so far, becoming the first ever Watford player to net in six games on the bounce and is already on 14 goals this term.

However, the Nigerian is close to yet ANOTHER record for the Hornets. Should he breach the City backline today, the 26-year old will equal Frank McPherson’ record of having netted in seven consecutive games in 1928-1929.

FORM BOOK AGAINST THE HOME SIDE

Manchester City are unbeaten against today’s opponents in their last EIGHT encounters. In fact, the visitors have been utterly dominant in that sequence, winning SIX of those games and drawing the other two.

To be fair to the home side however, this Premier League season is defying the form books time and time again.

ZAB TO NAB LANDMARK?

Pablo Zabaleta, who has recently returned from injury, could make his 200th Premier League appearance for the Manchester giants this afternoon if selected as the starting right-back.

Should he do so, the Argentine would be the third of his nation to reach such a high game tally after Carlos Tevez and Fabricio Coloccini.
