Everton star who won 100% ground duels outshone every goalscorer v Burnley

Everton progressed to the next round of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Burnley, the Toffees resoundingly winning 3-0 against their lowly Premier League opponents to seal their spot in the next round draw.

Sean Dyche fielded a strong lineup for this Cup clash against his former employers, the 52-year old's decision to keep faith with his trusted group of players instead of resting key individuals paying off with the Blues dominant throughout.

From a Clarets perspective, it's now four defeats on the spin with this upcoming Saturday seeing Vincent Kompany's men return to league action versus Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace low on confidence.

Everton will be jubilant, on the other hand, that they've managed to back up a positive victory away at West Ham with an emphatic home win over Burnley with Dyche's men controlling the match from the get-go.

James Garner would provide a Man of the Match-worthy performance from the centre of the park, the ex-Nottingham Forest man a big hit currently with the Goodison Park faithful.

How Everton beat Burnley

Despite only having 38% of the ball, Everton were still very much good value for the win with Dyche's Toffees showing their clinical edge in front of goal.

James Tarkowski would open the scoring against his ex-side, teed up for his header that would ripple past Arijanet Muric in the Clarets net by fellow former Burnley man Dwight McNeil.

Amadou Onana and Ashley Young would both chip in with strikes of their own to kill the contest in the second half, Dyche's side cruising towards the next round.

In contrast, Burnley exited the competition with barely any fight or energy apparent – only registering one solitary shot on target all night, as Everton romped home to a win under the Goodison Park floodlights.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Garner was the talk of the town after the match with the former Manchester United man continuing to endear himself to the Merseyside fanbase after a move to the Toffees last year.

James Garner's stats vs Burnley

One of the first names on his manager's team sheet at this moment in time – Garner ever-present for the Blues in their last five top-flight matches – it's clear to see why Dyche continues to select the 22-year-old centrally based on his imposing display versus Burnley.

Against the Clarets, Garner was instrumental in ensuring his team remained solid at the back whilst also helping his team push forward with pace and energy to catch out Vincent Kompany's side.

He would come away from this Cup encounter with a 7.4 Sofascore rating, winning all of the six ground duels attempted against his opponents whilst also successfully completing all of his dribbles for Dyche's men when the Toffees needed him further up the pitch.

Such a performance was rightfully praised by the Liverpool Echo's Connor O'Neill who handed the youngster a 7/10 match rating, before declaring: "Produced a vital interception to prevent a Burnley equaliser during the opening 45 minutes. A cool and composed figure in the middle of the pitch."

In general, this campaign has seen Garner excel at Goodison Park after a mediocre first term.

The £30k-per-week midfielder was again pivotal in Everton's last Premier League match versus West Ham, not in an attacking sense but very much so when helping out his defensive teammates – intercepting the ball three times against the Hammers to bravely break up the play, whilst throwing himself into four tackles to aid his side's pursuit of a clean sheet and the crucial three points.

Garner will hope he can continue this personal purple patch when the Toffees face off against Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton on Saturday, helping his side tick again with the aim of picking up three wins on the trot for the first time this season.

BCCI eases entry for new domestic teams as logistical challenges emerge

With the number of domestic matches more than doubling from last season, the BCCI has begun a challenging transition to implement the newly-registered constitution

The BCCI is confident of a seamless and hopefully competitive introduction of new teams to domestic cricket as it goes from organising “900 matches a year to 2017 matches”. Saba Karim, the BCCI general manager of operations, said it was extremely challenging to work on the logistics, but is confident the systems have been put in place. The number of matches has gone up because of the inclusion of nine new teams as the BCCI adopts a new constitution in accordance with the Lodha Committee reforms: every state in India will have full membership with the board and a representative team in all domestic cricket. The new constitution was registered as recently as August 21, which left the board with the challenge of not just logistics but also helping teams that have no existing infrastructure. The new teams will enter representative cricket under the close supervision of the BCCI, which has given them a broad framework: they will need four administrative staff members, four groundsmen, six coaches, six physios and six trainers. The eligibility criteria has been set too, and the new teams have been asked to nominate professionals if they can find them, with the remaining vacancies to be filled by the BCCI. All the admin professionals will be hired for one year, and the coaching staff for a season, and they will all enter tripartite contracts with BCCI and state associations. Karim said the BCCI hopes the state units will be self-sufficient from next season.A few states have already appointed coaches. Meghalaya have gone for former Karnataka coach Sanath Kumar, Bihar have asked for former India fast bowler Subroto Banerjee, former Hyderabad offspinner Kanwaljeet Singh will coach Nagaland, SS Das has been appointed by Manipur, KP Bhaskar by Uttarakhand, Gursharan by Arunachal and Sanjeev Sharma by Sikkim.Another problem for the states is lack of grounds, which might take longer to address. For this season, though, grounds have been arranged elsewhere. Arunachal have been allocated grounds in Assam, and Sikkim in Odisha. Other states have a ground each, so secondary grounds have been arranged outside their states. Mizoram and Nagaland have been assigned a ground each in Assam while Manipur will play some of their home games in Gujarat.Karim said the anti-corruption unit is on alert for cases of fringe players from other states offering kickbacks to the new states just to get selected and make the match fee upwards of Rs 20 lakh if they play every game. Each state is allowed three players from out of the state, but qualification criteria as a local player is up for manipulation too. To be eligible as a local player, a player must be born in that state or must be working, living or studying there for a year. The crunch of match officials with the increase in the number of simultaneous matches is being addressed with new examinations. They still need about 15 more umpires and 12 match referees, alongside scorers and video analysts.

Couldn't capitalise when we had it under control – Mashrafe

The Bangladesh captain rued another batting collapse and gave credit to his bowlers for performing well throughout the tournament

Shashank Kishore in Dubai29-Sep-20180:46

Our boys should feel proud – Mashrafe Mortaza

Success in defending runs in the final overs at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) influenced Mashrafe Mortaza’s decision to hand Mahmudullah the ball with India needing six runs off six balls in the Asia Cup final. Mashrafe had earlier considered throwing the ball to Soumya Sarkar, for his military medium, but changed his mind later.Mashrafe also took the bold call of finishing off Mustafizur Rahman’s quota in the 49th over, instead of keeping him back for the last over. That, he explained, was down to his spinners having an off day. “It would’ve been ideal if I could’ve used Rubel [Hossain] or Mustafizur at the end, but it wasn’t an ideal situation,” Mashrafe explained. “I asked Mahmudullah if he was confident. He had the experience of bowling in these situations in the last over in the BPL. Soumya would have been easier to score off. We wanted them to mis-hit one, and then you never know.”I said to (Mahmudullah) Riyad that the only chance we will have is when they mis-hit one. We wanted Kuldeep [Yadav] to mis-hit one, because [Kedar] Jadhav is a recognised batsman. He would have better calculations. The inside edge off the fifth ball could have gone to the stumps. Actually, you need luck in these situations, but when we had it under control, we couldn’t capitalise.”When MS Dhoni was dismissed in the 37th over, India still needed 63 runs off 83 with five wickets in hand. Mashrafe, however, could bowl just two overs of spin in the next seven overs even as the surface slowed down considerably to make shot-making difficult. This was a deviation from Bangladesh’s usual plan of operating with spin in the middle and have Mustafizur and Rubel man the death overs.Offspinner Mehidy Hasan managed just four overs, leaving Mahmudullah to complete the fifth bowler’s quota. While Mahmudullah managed to dismiss Dinesh Karthik, Bangladesh couldn’t quite maximise their frontline bowlers the way Mashrafe would have liked.”If our offspinners bowled well, the scenario would’ve been so different.” Mashrafe said. “Mustafiz and Rubel bowled so well that if we could have given them the ball from the 46th over, I think even 25 runs could have been defended.”You would always back the spinners when you see the ball turning in the first innings. Mehidy has bowled well throughout the tournament. Mahmudullah was good in the last game. We needed to bring 10 overs from them, but we were struggling to do that. Apu (Nazmul Islam) could have bowled better. But you cannot blame the bowlers after setting 223 to win. I think all of you thought in the half-time that we won’t be winning.”That they still managed to take the game into the final over pleased him, although the batting collapse left him bitterly disappointed. “Our boys should feel proud. I think we have to learn so many things,” he said. “We are struggling somewhere or the other in these tournaments. Today we made a good start but couldn’t go through.”In the last few matches, we lost early wickets but managed to score 240-250. I think the bowlers did a good job in the tournament. We are proud but we have to move forward. Not having Shakib [Al Hasan] and Tamim [Iqbal] was a big blow, but I think boys have done a really good job.”Mashrafe was left to rue a patchy batting performance that saw them slip up after being 120 for 0 at one stage. Bangladesh went in with five proper bowlers, and opened the batting with Mehidy to strengthen their middle and lower order. This should have worked to their advantage after the kind of start they had, but a combination of outstanding fielding from India and poor shot selection from Bangladesh stopped them short of scoring 250.”To be honest, we wanted a partnership when Riyad and Mushfiq were batting. We were 120 in the 21st over. If we had scored low-risk cricket for the next 14-15 overs, we could have added 60-70 runs for the loss of one wicket. Mushfiq couldn’t execute well. The run-outs also hurt. Intent doesn’t mean getting out playing big shots. You have to look after the batting after the good start. We should have scored 250-260 on this wicket.”

Update on Southampton signing “very good” player in permanent transfer

Southampton could look to complete the permanent signing of a "very good" attacking player with a wealth of Premier League experience, according to an update from journalist Dean Jones.

Southampton keen on January signings

Saints have gone into the latest international break with plenty of confidence with their 2-1 win at home to West Brom last weekend meaning they are currently fourth in the Championship table. Russell Martin continues to do an impressive job as manager, as he looks to guide them back into the Premier League at the first attempt, and new signings in the January transfer window could be needed to aid that quest.

Southampton have been linked with a number of players in recent times, with West Brom youngster Tom Fellows a transfer target for Saints, and talks with Marco Leonardo over a move to St Mary's also thought to have taken place.

It would, therefore, be a surprise if Saints hadn't made any new additions come the end of January, and a new update suggests that another intriguing piece of business could be on the cards.

Southampton could sign Ryan Fraser

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that Southampton could make a permanent move for Ryan Fraser, with the Scot joining Saints on loan during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United forward Ryan Fraser.

"I think if Southampton get the chance to sign Ryan Fraser then it's something that they will be jumping at if he continues to be like this. Not just a player, but the character that he's shown and the personality. Southampton were crying out for identity this season and they want to see a team that is playing a certain way but also has characters within it that match who they are and what they've been in the past.

"Ryan Fraser obviously had to make a big decision in terms of moving down to the Championship and he didn't want to commit himself to being at that level, but I think he's seeing signs that Southampton won't be at that level very long and that they can get out of it.

"And I think, yeah, Southampton will definitely want to sign Ryan Fraser permanently. It's just a case of proving to him that this is the place for him to be."

Signing Fraser on a permanent basis could be a really shrewd decision by Southampton, with the Scot such an experienced player who has already made his presence felt this season.

29-year-old Fraser's stats of two goals in three Championship starts in 2023/24 – with another ten appearances from the substitutes' bench – show he is plenty capable of providing an impact in the final third, and he also has two assists for Scotland in their UEFA Nations League campaign.

On top of that, the Southampton loanee has lots of Premier League experience, with Fraser scoring 18 goals and registering 35 assists in the competition, showing that he could be a great squad member if Martin's side get back into the top flight next May.

As Jones mentions, the former Bournemouth winger's influence off the pitch could be just as huge as on it moving forward – Micah Richards once called him "very good" – given what he has achieved in his career and the impact he can have on younger teammates.

Zimbabwe's shot at rare away series win

Bangladesh have failed to score more than 200 in their last eight Test innings. Can they end that streak in Mirpur?

Mohammad Isam10-Nov-2018

The Zimbabwe fielders lift Sean Williams in celebration•AFP

Big pictureBangladesh’s reputation as a team that is strong at home is on the line. Zimbabwe go to Dhaka not only with the cushion of a 1-0 lead in a two-Test series, but also the confidence of having dismantled the hosts for less than 200 in both innings in Sylhet. Bangladesh have failed to score more than 200 in eight consecutive Test innings now, a streak that raises plenty of questions.Imrul Kayes and Liton Das combined well as openers in the ODIs against Zimbabwe, but were guilty of carelessness against deliveries outside off in the first Test. It was a fault that Mominul Haque and Mahmudullah were also guilty of. The responsibility now falls on Mushfiqur Rahim to move up the order – he was at No. 6 in Sylhet – so that he can bat with other batsmen around him, instead of shoring up collapses with the tail for company.Of Bangladesh’s two debutants in Sylhet, Ariful Haque had two decent outings but Najmul Hossain Shanto, a highly rated young batsman, came under scrutiny after two failures. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Mohammad Mithun makes his Test debut in Najmul’s place.Zimbabwe scored at run rates of only 2.40 and 2.75 in Sylhet, but their batsmen showed the capability of spending long periods at the crease. And no one better than Sean Williams, who made 88 off 173 balls in the first innings to put Zimbabwe in a position of strength. Hamilton Masakadza and Peter Moor also contributed half centuries to the victory, but Brendon Taylor and Sikandar Raza were short of runs. The visitors will hope their ability to play spin serves them well in Dhaka.Zimbabwe had little to complain about their bowling. Tendai Chatara and Kyle Jarvis provided early breakthroughs and Raza led the spin attack in both innings, taking six wickets. Newcomers Brandon Mavuta and Wellington Masakadza bowled well in the second innings and will have to play a crucial role in Dhaka as well.Like they did in Sylhet, Bangladesh’s spinners will have to play a pivotal role in the second Test. Taijul Islam had a superb game with his 11 wickets, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz may look to bowl differently in Dhaka. It will be interesting to see if Bangladesh continue with Nazmul Islam, who doesn’t offer much with his left-arm darts.Mustafizur Rahman is likely to return to the attack and may share the new ball with Abu Jayed who held his own given the limited opportunities in Sylhet. It is a must-win game for Bangladesh, who lost to Sri Lanka at home earlier this year too. For Zimbabwe, even a draw would result in only their third Test series victory away from home.Form guideBangladesh LLLLD (Last five completed matches, most recent first)Zimbabwe WLDLLIn the spotlightWith only 58 runs in his last eight Test innings, Mahmudullah is under some pressure going into the Dhaka Test. He also shoulders the responsibility of captaincy, and will be expected to be more pro-active on the field.Sikandar Raza’s 6 for 76 in Sylhet were his best match figures in Test cricket. However, Zimbabwe also need runs from him. Raza made starts in two of the three ODIs and in both innings of the first Test, and he will hope to convert them in Dhaka.Team newsMithun may replace Najmul in Bangladesh’s XI, while Mustafizur is set to return after being rested in Sylhet.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Imrul Kayes, 2 Liton Das, 3 Mominul Haque, 4 Mohammad Mithun/Najmul hossain Shanto, 5 Mahmudullah (capt), 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Ariful Haque, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taijul Islam, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Nazmul Islam/Abu JayedThere may be a case for Craig Ervine to replace opener Brian Chari, who made 13 and 4 in Sylhet, though Zimbabwe may want to continue with a winning combination.Zimbabwe (probable) 1 Hamilton Masakadza (capt), 2 Brian Chari, 3 Brendan Taylor, 4 Sean Williams, 5 Sikandar Raza, 6 Peter Moor, 7 Regis Chakabva (wk), 8 Brandon Mavuta, 9 Wellington Masakadza, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Tendai ChataraPitch and conditionsThere will be considerable pressure on Gamini Silva, the Dhaka curator, after his pitch was given a below-average rating in the last Test held here, against Sri Lanka in February. Dhaka has, over the last two years, dished out raging turners. The weather is forecast to be mostly dry.Stats and trivia No cricketer in Bangladesh has played more first-class matches before making a Test debut than Mithun – 88 – if he does play in Dhaka. No Zimbabwe batsman has played more than one Test at the Shere Bangla Stadium, and Raza is the only one to have made a half-century there. Taijul and Mehidy have taken 28 and 19 wickets at this venue, at averages of 23 and 21.
