Man United: Ten Hag’s £65k-p/w ‘beast’ could replace McTominay

Manchester United can keep the momentum going with another positive result at home to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup this evening, with the Red Devils having got back to winning ways with a much-needed victory away to Burnley at the weekend.

While hardly a free-flowing performance from Erik ten Hag's men on the night, the Old Trafford outfit made sure that there were to be no more negative headlines by doing the basics right, grafting and grinding out a hard-fought win over the newly promoted strugglers.

That 1-0 triumph had also come despite the absence of a host of first-team regulars – resulting in veteran asset Jonny Evans making his first start for the club in almost a decade – although the hope will be that Ten Hag has more options at his disposal against Roy Hodgson's side later today.

What is the Man United team news vs Palace?

Amid the positivity of finally picking up three points at Turf Moor, that battling performance also proved noteworthy following the return of both Raphael Varane and Sofyan Amrabat from injury, with the experienced pair making late cameo appearances off the bench to help bolster the backline.

The hope will be that the duo can be fit to feature from the start this time around, with Varane, in particular, likely to be needed if Lisandro Martinez's absence continues – the Argentine having missed the clash with Clarets.

As per the club's official website, fellow centre-back Harry Maguire could also be in contention following his return to training, while it could prove a welcome return for summer signing, Mason Mount, with the new number seven having been out of action since the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Mason Mount

Like Maguire, the former Chelsea man has been pictured in training of late, raising hopes that he can return the fold at the Theatre of Dreams this evening to kickstart what has been a difficult beginning in Manchester, following his £55m arrival.

Having the likes of Mount and Amrabat in tow could also enhance Ten Hag's options in the centre of the park, with that potentially set to allow for Scott McTominay to drop to the bench following his dire performance last time out.

How did Scott McTominay perform against Burnley?

There may be those questioning just why the Scotland international remains at Old Trafford despite having been linked with a departure throughout the summer window, with such queries only set to be heightened by the 26-year-old's dismal showing in Lancashire.

Having come under fire after footage showed him failing to track back in the defeat to Bayern Munich last week, the midfielder was again caught in the crosshairs against Burnley, having been criticised for his "horrid" display by content producer Casey Evans.

Also dubbed "unwatchable in and out of possession" by podcaster Aaron Moniz, it was difficult to ascertain just what the £60k-per-week dud was offering to his side in the centre of the park, having looked 'all at sea' at times – as per Manchester Evening News journalist, Samuel Luckhurst.

The hope would be that the towering, 6 foot 4 asset would be able to provide a dominant, physical presence alongside Casemiro, although the United academy graduate won just two of his 11 total duels on the day, having also made three fouls as a marker of his often clumsy manner.

Such woes were also evident on the ball as the long-serving brute lost possession on 12 occasions from his 47 touches and failed to make a single key pass, as he simply 'didn't look comfortable' – according to 90min's Tom Gott.

Having been parachuted into the side due to the shortcomings of the Casemiro and Christian Eriksen midfield axis – the pair both looking "like short-term fixes to a long-term problem", according to The Athletic's Mark Critchley – McTominay has certainly not taken his chance, hence the need to find a suitable replacement.

Who could replace McTominay against Palace?

In an ideal world, Ten Hag may consider utilising an attack-minded midfield trio of Hannibal Mejbri, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, thus opening up another space on the flanks, although it would be no surprise if a more sturdy option is considered – like Amrabat.

While the Moroccan international could be called upon to feature at full-back – a role that Ten Hag has previously suggested he can play – it is worth seeing whether the 27-year-old can be the much-needed solution to the club's midfield problem.

As pundit Paul Merson stated last month, the Fiorentina loanee is the type of figure who will work to protect the back four: "I think he's a good player. He stays, he holds his position. Casemiro plays holding midfield but he does want to go forward, he can play.

"Amrabat will hold his shape and you need someone who will sit in front of the back four. It doesn't matter how good your defenders are, if you have players running at you left, right and centre, you'll ship goals for fun."

Lauded as a "beast" in the past by ESPN's Steve Nicol, the imposing gem will certainly provide a stern physical test for any opposition midfielder, having arguably "got the better of Declan Rice" in last season's Europa Conference League final – according to Merson.

A powerful, "raging bull", in the words of Moroccan journalist, Amine El Amri, Amrabat appears to have the silk to match the steel, showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 6% among his European peers for pass completion, as well as in the top 16% for progressive passes.

That composed, forward-thinking nature in his deep-lying berth is in stark contrast to McTominay, with the Lancaster-born liability ranking in just the bottom 47% and the bottom 4% for those same two metrics, respectively.

There may be concerns over Amrabat's fitness having barely featured so far this term, yet the £65k-per-week machine needs a chance to stake his claim for that starting berth in midfield, with there perhaps no better time to do so than in the cup this evening.

Heino Kuhn hurries Kent home after drainage leak delay

There were few alarms for Kent as they completed a six-wicket victory in Cardiff

Kent 174 (van der Gugten 7-42) and 195 for 4 (Kuhn 69*) beat Glamorgan 94 (Stevens 6-26) and 274 (Marsh 76, Murphy 54, Henry 4-59) by six wickets
ScorecardA leak from the Sophia Gardens underground drainage system delayed Kent a little, but they had few alarms in securing their second County Championship win of the season as Heino Kuhn anchored the six-wicket victory with an unbeaten 69.The third day’s play could not begin for more than an hour and a half due to a damp patch at the edge of the pitch. Then Glamorgan’s last pair added just a single to their overnight score before Matt Henry had Michael Hogan caught at third slip, giving the New Zealand pace bowler match figures of 8 for 90 and taking his season’s tally to 27.The pitch had flattened out considerably since 19 wickets fell on the opening day, and the Kent openers Daniel Bell Drummond and Sean Dickson laid the foundation with an opening partnership of 77 in 22 overs. Both batsmen played some handsome drives through the off side and there was only one play and miss in the first 21 overs.Bell-Drummond contributed 36 to the opening partnership before he was leg before to the persevering Timm van der Gugten – his eighth victim of the game. Dickson was the next to go, leg before to Marchant de Lange, the Kent opener becoming the 14th lbw dismissal in the game.Kuhn soon made his intentions clear with a flurry of boundaries, although Andrew Salter’s offspin commanded respect and he almost had Kuhn prodding to short leg in his third over.Kuhn reached a rapid half century from 49 balls, with a large proportion of his runs – 40 – coming from boundaries. His captain Joe Denly also played with ease, once lifting Salter over long-on for six as Kent’s third wicket pair closed in on their target.Kuhn and Denly had put on 71 at four runs an over before Denly, aiming for his second six over long-on, was brilliantly caught by the substitute fielder Tom Cullen, Glamorgan’s reserve wicketkeeper, who dived to his left and held on to take the catch inches from the ground and the boundary rope. With two runs required, Zak Crawley became yet another lbw victim, before Darren Stevens scored the winning runs to give Kent a well-earned victory.

Ranking the 10 worst Arsenal football kits of all time

Throughout the years, pretty much every club in the Premier League will have had their highs and lows when it comes to the kits that they’re sporting.

When it comes to Arsenal, it feels as if they’ve been on a very solid run recently, whether it be the revitalised bruised banana shirt or the classic red and white colours.

However, sometimes it doesn’t quite hit the mark. With these kits in mind, Football FanCast has looked back through history to find the 10 worst kits ever to grace the turf at Highbury or the Emirates.

10 Away kit 2020/21

Kicking things off with a shirt from a few years ago that certainly divided opinion – something which can be repeated for the majority of this list, in truth.

The 2020/21 season came with a very tidy home kit, as well as a navy and pink number for the third shirt, but the colour palette for the away strip wasn’t quite as well-received, with the red on the white looking more like blood splatter as opposed to the marble halls at Highbury.

In that shirt, Arsenal staggered to an underwhelming eighth-placed finish in the Premier League.

This was Mikel Arteta’s first full season in charge, but it wasn’t all doom and gloom with his side winning the Community Shield and getting to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they lost to eventual winners Villarreal.

9 Goalkeeper kit 2010/11

We’re putting a goalkeeper kit under the microscope here, as it fits in well alongside some of these underwhelming outfits.

Wojciech Szczęsny was the Arsenal goalkeeper for most of the 2010/11 season, and along with some below-par green numbers that he wore, this snazzy pink shirt was a little garish.

One of the more notable moments from that season was not a positive one for Arsenal as the Polish shot-stopper wore the pink strip when he conceded four goals against Newcastle United.

The design on the sleeves is certainly a bit of an eyesore, but the pink just takes it up (or down) a notch from the black and light blue versions, which featured in the Gunners’ win over Barcelona and defeat to Birmingham City at Wembley respectively.

8 Home kit 2018/19

Red and white is so synonymous with Arsenal Football Club that one would be mistaken for thinking that there is no way to butcher that.

But in their last season as the manufacturers back in 2018/19, Puma did exactly that as they added a pink stripe on the sleeves, while the layout just seemed a bit clunky.

The aforementioned stripe was also accompanied by the Visit Rwanda sleeve sponsor.

The Gunners’ exploits that year appeared to mirror the kit itself, with Unai Emery failing to qualify for the Champions League in his first season by losing in the Europa League final and finishing outside of the top four.

7 Away kit 2017/18

Arsenal faltered in their final year under Arsene Wenger, and their underachievements in this blue effort from Puma were arguably foreshadowed by its iffy design.

In fact, Arsenal won just 2 of 12 outings in light blue, with both victories coming in the Europa League. They even lost at home wearing blue when beaten by Graham Potter’s Ostersund side, before prevailing on aggregate.

As for the kit itself, the transition from light to dark blue just didn’t work; it didn’t feel very ‘Arsenal’ at all.

6 Away kit 2007/08

Arsenal’s home kits have always been primarily red with some white to accompany it, so when the away kit in 2007/08 was the opposite, the Emirates faithful were intrigued.

The red was much darker, but either way, having white as a primary colour for the rivals of Tottenham Hotspur was a peculiar move, and one that shouldn’t be revisited anytime hereafter.

They did have their moments in this strip, though, with Arsenal pulling off a huge victory at the San Siro against AC Milan thanks to goals from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor.

It has to be said that they did fall at the next hurdle in white, as late goals from Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel won the quarter-final tie for Liverpool at Anfield. Steer clear of white in future, please.

5 Away kit 2010/11

This could be a controversial one, but the yellow/burgundy mixture from 2010/11 receives a no from us.

While yellow has become synonymous with Arsenal – primarily with blue – it’s by no means a guaranteed hit on its own. This mustard yellow and burgundy combination was tidy enough, but fails to deliver on the kind of throwback we *think* Nike were going for, here.

Exiting the cup and Champions League in this kit won’t help the more recent memories, either. One look at this and you immediately picture Robin van Persie seeing red, right?

4 Away kit 2014/15

After beating Hull City in the FA Cup final when sporting the classic Arsenal red, they faced Aston Villa the following year at Wembley and took to the field in their yellow away kit.

The yellow aspect of it wasn’t anything bad, but the dark blue sleeves just didn’t really work alongside the red of the sponsors and squad numbers.

When you lift a piece of major silverware, though, no one can really have any complaints.

3 Away kit 2023/24

Another controversial one, here – and it’s Adidas’ latest effort. The fluorescent yellow is bad enough, but the needless tyre tracks and awful colour combinations just make it downright ugly.

20 years on from the Invincibles season, you can’t help but feel Adidas has missed a trick in not going for the easy win of an anniversary-inspired strip – especially given their track record. And all this after coming up with one of the club’s best away kits in ages (perhaps ever) with last year’s all-black design.

You can’t expect perfection every time, but this feels like a major step backwards. Admittedly, it works rather well with the shorts, so maybe it’s a grower. Can’t help but feel next summer’s release will be a drastic improvement, though.

2 Away kit 2012/13

The sky blue and navy away kit of the 2011/12 season is very lucky not to have made this list, and it may have been slightly saved by the fact that an even worse strip was produced for the following season.

Signing Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla in the same window is a commendable feat, it has to be said, even when one considers the loss of Robert van Persie that same summer. Unfortunately, their transfer activity was not matched by Nike’s idea to a) go for stripes; and b) make a total mess of it.

1 Third kit 2014/15

The absolute monstrosity that tops this list is almost a decade old now, and it is definitely for the best that it is left in the past.

Having previously visited the 2014/15 season, we are back there, but with the third kit this time around.

Dark blue and light blue as a contrast is something which can be very hit-and-miss, and this shirt certainly fits into the latter category.

One memorable moment that Arsenal fans got to witness from this kit was when Danny Welbeck scored a winner in the FA Cup quarter-final against his previous employers, Manchester United.

But they suffered some chastening nights in Europe, including a poor showing against Borussia Dortmund before being dumped out of the Champions League by Monaco despite winning on the night.

At least Arsenal limited this embarrassment to the cup competitions.

Leeds: Thorp Arch teen who loves "defending" could be Rodon’s heir

Leeds United made the decision to appoint Daniel Farke to lead their charge to land an instant return to the Premier League at the first time of asking this season.

The German head coach has arrived with a proven track record of being able to win promotion from the Championship as he won two league titles at this level during his time with Norwich City.

Farke also has the ability and willingness to develop young talent. The 46-year-old admitted that he wanted to work with and improve up-and-coming prospects, which paid off throughout his spell in East Anglia.

Players such as James Maddison, Ben Godfrey, Max Aarons, and Emiliano Buendia, but to name a few, progressed under his management at Carrow Road, and he has already shown signs of doing the same at Leeds.

Former Norwich midfielder James Maddison.

17-year-old Archie Gray has played in all 11 of the club's league matches this term and supporters may be wondering who the next prospect to come through will be.

One young talent who could emerge as a first-team option for Farke in the future is U21 defender Kris Moore, who could be the dream heir to Joe Rodon at Elland Road.

How many appearances has Kris Moore made for Leeds?

The 19-year-old stopper is yet to make his competitive debut for the first-team but has made 56 appearances for the U21 side to date, along with 28 outings at U18 level.

He has featured in 47 Premier League 2 matches and was an unused substitute for Farke against Shrewsbury in the EFL Cup back in August, which suggests that the teenage ace has done enough to catch the manager's eye in order to be trusted to be on the bench.

Moore, who has played the majority of his academy career as a centre-back but can also play as a right-back, showcased his quality as a defender in the EFL Trophy for the U21s last season.

As per Sofascore, the Thorp Arch prospect started three matches against Tranmere Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, and Crewe Alexandra, and caught the eye with 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game and an impressive aerial duel success rate of 75%.

It is a small sample size to work from but it does provide an insight into the type of defender Moore is as he is able to make multiple defensive interventions per match, which points to his proactive defending, and has shown himself to be an aerially dominant titan at the back.

How has Rodon performed this season?

The central defender is on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur and has showcased his quality at Championship level with some commanding displays at the back.

Rodon has made 2.4 tackles and interceptions per clash, which is more than any other Leeds centre-back, and displayed his aerial prowess with a duel success rate of 69% in the air.

This shows that, like Moore, the Wales international is a proactive central defender who is also able to dominate the opposition when it comes to dealing with long passes and crosses into the box.

Therefore, the 19-year-old academy talent, who Leeds TV pundit Ben Parker claimed "loves defending", could be Farke's dream heir to Rodon when the Spurs colossus' loan comes to an end next summer.

The German head coach could look to bring through the teenage ace next year and bed him in as a like-for-like replacement for the Welsh gem, if he can translate his youth team form over to first-team level.
