English cricket coaching needs more diversity – Wasim Khan

Wasim Khan has questioned whether the game in England and Wales can do more to encourage coaches and administrators from South Asian and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds

Wasim Khan, the chief executive of Leicestershire, has questioned whether the game in England and Wales can do more to encourage coaches and administrators from South Asian and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds. While Wasim has welcomed the appointment of Vikram Solanki and Dimitri Mascarenhas as assistant head coaches at Surrey and Essex respectively, he raised the possibility of “unconscious bias” inhibiting the progress of more non-white coaches and suggested a concerted effort should be made to improve the situation. His comments follow those of Roland Butcher, who recently described himself as “surprised” and “saddened” by the small number of coaching opportunities provided to non-white people despite there being “so many managerial positions available in the first-class game in England”. Butcher, the first man of Afro-Caribbean heritage to represent England at Test level, told the BBC “it appears as if Black and Asian coaches are not trusted to do a job”.While the ECB has certainly made an increased effort to engage with the Asian community in recent times – Lord Patel of Bradford has joined the ECB board as an independent director and has been preparing a report on the issue, while Vikram Banerjee, the former Gloucestershire spinner, has been appointed as the ECB’s head of strategy – Wasim, at least, feels there is a great deal more to do.”My concern is we’ve been talking about this for 20 years,” Wasim told ESPNcricinfo, “and we’re not seeing the progress we had anticipated. I think, as a game, we know we need to do better. We have started exploring the issue of unconscious bias. And that’s a welcome first step.”I know the game has prided itself on the number of Asian players in the men’s side, but let’s now look beyond that: let’s look at what might be causing that blockage in the system and let’s see if we can provide more opportunities.”You would have thought that having more coaches of South Asian heritage might prove helpful in reaching the players from those communities we are trying to attract into mainstream cricket. So let’s have an honest conversation now about what is stopping non-white coaches from taking the next step and graduating to those key positions at first-class counties. And let’s see if we can extend the fantastic progress made in the women’s game and try to involve more non-white players and coaches.”Wasim’s words, while measured, are likely to have some impact. As well as having been the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket, he is also believed to be the only chief executive of BAME (black, Asian or minority ethnic) heritage at a professional sport’s club in the country and was recently named in the Muslim 100 Powerlist. He feels he owes his success to opportunities offered first by Mervyn King, the former governor of the Bank of England, who recommended him to the Cricket Foundation as CEO and then ECB president, Giles Clarke, who recommended him for the position of CEO at Leicestershire.”I owe Mervyn and Giles greatly,” Wasim said. “They spotted some talent within me and helped me gain the opportunities to develop those skills. That’s the sort of belief I’d like to see shown in more people of BAME heritage.”As things stand at present, some potentially really good coaches are telling me there’s ‘no point’ in them applying for such jobs as they don’t think the system will provide them with a fair chance. So let’s look into that. Let’s see if we can provide shadowing and mentoring opportunities with academy or head coaches and see if we can up-skill these guys so they are better prepared to seize opportunities in the future.”Nobody is asking for tokenism. Meritocracy is vital. But let’s ask ourselves if we are really getting the best out of all the talent at our disposal at present and ensure there are opportunities for people of all backgrounds. Because if we don’t provide opportunities, we’ll never give benefit from all the available talent that is out there.”Current figures suggest the percentage of cricketers of South Asian heritage on first-class staff – about 5% – roughly reflects the percentage of South Asian people in British society. When compared to the figures in recreational cricket, however, those figures start to look far less healthy.Around 33% of recreational cricketers are of South Asian heritage, according to analysis by sports marketing agency Two Circles and the ECB, with 42% of them expressing a belief that there are no opportunities for the most talented players from their communities to progress in the game. And, despite the obvious enthusiasm for the sport, only 3% of ticket sales across county and international cricket in England and Wales comes from the South Asian community.

Man United: £65k-p/w ‘machine’ can help get Casemiro firing again

Among the litany of issues facing Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag at present is the worrying form of former Real Madrid hero, Casemiro, with the Brazilian destroyer seemingly looking a shell of the player that thrived during his debut campaign last time out.

Having had a "devastating" impact last term following his £70m arrival from the Bernabeu, as per club legend Gary Neville, the 31-year-old has failed to reach those heights this time around, having been unceremoniously hooked midway through the second half in the defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion – encapsulating his, and United's, grim start to the new Premier League season.

How has Casemiro performed this season?

The experienced maestro was central to everything that was good about the Red Devils last term, with Neville suggesting that the "jump in quality" was "enormous" when the midfielder was in the side in 2022/23.

The treble winner did, however, sound a note of caution at the time after suggesting that the £350k-per-week asset was not a "smart or shrewd signing" due to the expensive outlay on a player of his age, with those concerns already bearing true amid Casemiro's woes of late.

Such a decline has been evident from the off as the one-time Porto ace was simply "torn to shreds" in the narrow, opening game win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the midfield on the day having been simply "non-existent" despite Ten Hag's men claiming a 1-0 win – as per Neville.

That shaky showing set the tone for what was to follow, with the 6 foot 1 powerhouse having won just 44% of his total duels thus far, while also being dribbled past 2.6 times on average per game, having won 55% of his total duels and been dribbled past just 1.6 times per game across the whole of last season – as per Sofascore.

As the man tasked with shielding the back four, Casemiro has undoubtedly looked rather isolated of late even with Ten Hag deploying a midfield diamond at the weekend, hence why he could benefit from the belated arrival of Sofyan Amrabat, whom Neville suggested "could give him some help".

What type of player is Sofyan Amrabat?

While the deadline day arrival – who signed on a season-long loan deal from Fiorentina – is yet to feature for his new club due to injury, the commanding midfielder is set to be ready for selection sooner rather than later, providing what would be a big boost for Ten Hag.

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Whether that much-anticipated debut comes away to Bayern Munich or Burnley this week remains to be seen, although the £65k-per-week "machine" – as described by journalist Joe Crann – would allow for Casemiro to receive some extra defensive support in the centre of the park.

The former Club Brugge man is a true "monster" from his deep-lying berth, as per journalist Carlo Garganese, with that evident during the World Cup in Qatar as he memorably produced a stunning recovery tackle on France talisman, Kylian Mbappe.

The 27-year-old – who can also feature at full-back or at wing-back if needed – will also offer the benefit of his calm and composure nature in possession to help ensure that the ball is not so easily squandered, showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 7% among his European peers for pass completion – as well as the top 16% for progressive passes per 90.

That is in stark contrast to Scott McTominay, for instance, who ranks in just the bottom 48% and the bottom 4% for those same two metrics, respectively, while even the classy Christian Eriksen ranks in just the top 48% for pass completion – albeit while ranking in the top 7% for progressive passes per 90.

Such quality both in and out of possession should ensure that Amrabat could prove something of a game-changer in United's spiralling season, with both Ten Hag – and Casemiro – in need of someone to help steady the ship in the midfield ranks.

– A linda história do clube nunca será apagada.

England’s new national selector has the challenge of trying to solve long-standing issues with the Test side

Stick or twistEngland were thwarted by New Zealand’s lower order in Christchurch, falling two wickets short of ending their barren run away from home. In the aftermath, there was a sense that the signs of improvement – particularly from Mark Stoneman and James Vince, who both scored half-centuries – had brought the men in the spotlight some more time. It will be interesting to see whether Smith feels the same way or whether the start of a new season is the time for a blank sheet of paper.Find the x-factorMark Wood and Jack Leach were brought into the side for Christchurch in an attempt to shake up England’s attack. It nearly worked, but the reality is that England have taken 20 wickets just once in their last 12 away Tests. James Anderson remains the attack leader and Stuart Broad looked rejuvenated in New Zealand, but high on Smith’s agenda will be finding bowlers (pace and spin) who can provide a point of difference. Names suggested early season include Olly Stone and Richard Gleeson in the pace debate, but Smith’s desire to delve into analytics may throw up some interesting new faces.Home and awayEngland’s home record has propped up their Test standing in recent years, but that can’t be taken for granted. There is a balance to strike between winning in the here-and-now and having an eye on the types of players who will be needed to arrest the decline overseas. For example, if a certain pace bowler or spinner is viewed as a likely starter in Sri Lanka or West Indies, then do they need to be playing this summer to find their feet in Test cricket? And, also, Smith will need to decide how far ahead to look. The next away Ashes in 2021-22 is likely to be high on the agenda. Players for that need to be identified now.Horses for coursesWith Smith’s emphasis on analytics and a more Moneyball approach to selection, could we see an evolution of the way Test squads are selected throughout a series – especially at home, where there is no restriction on who is available and limited distances to travel. Even if a certain team produces an impressive victory in one Test, does it mean they are the best XI for the next match? How deep will Smith look at conditions and opposition when selecting squads? This, of course, has to be balanced with the dangers of chopping and changing, and the instability it could bring. If it aint brokeRejuvenating the Test side will be Smith’s biggest selection challenge (although the T20 side has also lost some direction in the last couple of years). But the 50-over side is shaping up very nicely ahead of next year’s World Cup – an event with an importance to the English game that cannot be overstated. An era has been staked on winning that tournament on home soil. Smith is a smart man and will know what is working well, but it will be important that he doesn’t feel the need to tinker for the sake of it. Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss probably already know 13 of their 15-man squad for 2019 – things would have to go badly pear-shaped for those selection meetings to stretch Smith too much.

Alongside Butland: £22k-p/w Rangers ‘hero’ has been a shining light

Glasgow Rangers laboured to a rather underwhelming 1-0 victory over Motherwell in the Premiership yesterday, with a chorus of boos ringing out at Ibrox once the full-time whistle went.

Michael Beale isn’t the most popular figure at the club right now and the Gers are failing to show any sort of identity on the pitch whatsoever.

With nine new signings arriving in Glasgow this summer, many felt it was a much-needed overhaul, yet Beale has struggled to get a tune out of the majority of his new players.

Jack Butland is perhaps the only shining light with regard to the incomings as he has made the number one spot his own.

How has Jack Butland performed for Rangers this season?

Allan McGregor finally retired at 41 following the expiration of his contract and new blood was required between the sticks.

Butland arrived with an impressive reputation, albeit he had endured a few tough seasons at Crystal Palace, making just 17 appearances since the start of the 2020/21 campaign and a move to Rangers represented a fresh opportunity.

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Across six games in the Premiership, the ‘keeper has conceded just 0.3 goals per game while making 2.2 saves per game – a success rate of 87% – and keeping four clean sheets from these ties, letting in just two goals.

It was an area which required strengthening in the summer and Beale has worked wonders with Butland, yet there is another player who has been reinvigorated of late – John Lundstram.

Is John Lundstram back to his best?

The Englishman joined the Light Blues in the summer of 2021 when Steven Gerrard was in charge and it looked like an astute piece of business, as the midfielder had racked up 62 Premier League appearances for Sheffield United in the two seasons prior to arriving in Glasgow.

He endured a tough start to life at the Ibrox side, yet post-Christmas during his first term, Lundstram really started to kick on and came to life during the stunning European run in 2022.

He scored twice, against Borussia Dortmund and the goal which sent the club through to the final against RB Leipzig, while succeeding with 54% of his dribble attempts and making 1.6 tackles per game.

He was even lauded as a “cult hero” by former Gers icon Ally McCoist during that European adventure and the £22k-per-week gem was looking like an impressive signing.

Jack Butland

This season, Lundstram has been one of Beale’s few shining lights, starting four league matches and averaging a Sofascore match rating of 7.12.

He ranks sixth in the squad for tackles (1.6) and interceptions (1.4) per game while also ranking fourth for long balls per game (3.8) and his presence in the heart of the midfield has been a rare bright spark amid a sea of darkness this term.

His contract runs out next summer and Lundstram will be hoping these improved displays will send a message to Beale that he wishes to be at Ibrox for the long term and retain his place in the starting XI over the coming months.

With these current performances, a long-term stay in Glasgow is certainly on the cards – as will hopefully also be the case for Butland.
