Galle's covered exterior sparks spectator displeasure

Sri Lanka Cricket have covered the outer periphery of the Galle Stadium with corrugated iron sheets and SLC branding, much to the resentment of the local spectators

Sri Lanka Cricket has covered the periphery of the Galle Stadium for the first time since 2012, sparking resentment among local spectators, some of whom would ordinarily watch portions of the game from outside the wire fence.Corrugated iron sheets and SLC branding now obscure the view into the ground from the road outside. The vantage points from the fort ramparts, however, remain unobscured, though that is largely because of their height.”The reason is that when you’re playing the match, everyone can see the movement of vehicles going past, and the players get disturbed,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva said. “So we thought the best thing is to cover it up.” De Silva also confirmed the board had not fielded any complaints from either players or paying spectators, but that “people need not make any complaints for us to take action.”In addition to those reasons, SLC has also said “new transmission technology” could be affected by sonic and visual disturbances from the road that surrounds the venue. A technician from series broadcaster Ten Sony has refuted that claim, however. There is no known reason why the noise from passing vehicles should interfere with broadcast technology. The covering of the venue has also sparked particular consternation among some Galle residents, because the ground had been a free-to-use public park before the stadium was built. Non-paying spectators have grown accustomed to congregating beneath the trees on the ground’s perimeter to catch passages of play. Those spectators would now either have to go to the fort ramparts for a more distant view of the match, or buy a day ticket, the cheapest of which sells for 200 Sri Lankan rupees ($1.30 approximately).De Silva said sale of tickets was not SLC’s motivation in blocking off the view.

Dickwella asked me to keep talking to him – Gunaratne

Asela Gunaratne was the go-to man on Tuesday – for Niroshan Dickwella, with whom he put on 121, and for captain Dinesh Chandimal

Niroshan Dickwella has played more Tests, but during the 121-run stand that turned the match, it was Asela Gunaratne who found himself constantly pestered for advice. Sri Lanka had been five-down and 185 runs short of their target when the two came together. Dickwella played aggressively through the partnership, and helped ensure some of the pressure Zimbabwe had exerted, was reversed.”Since he came to the crease, what Dickwella told me was: ‘Talk to me all the time, and make me score runs.'” Gunaratne said. “I think what he meant was that he hasn’t scored a big Test innings, where I have. He just wanted me to tell him how to handle situations. Sometimes when the game was going a certain way, he wanted me to keep advising him. Occasionally I’d tell him not to go for certain shots. In the end, he stuck around and scored.”Gunaratne’s own hand in the victory had been a little more measured than Dickwella’s. At the crease when the winning runs were hit, Gunaratne compiled a sensible 80, despite having suffered a mild hamstring injury earlier in the match. Captain Dinesh Chandimal revealed he had expected Gunaratne to play a major role, at the start of the day.”I told Asela this morning: ‘You’re going to get a hundred today’.” Chandimal said. “But very confidently, Asela said to me: ‘No Chandi, there won’t be need for me to get a 100. I’ll get 70 and win the game.’ That’s the kind of faith I expect from my players. There’s a chance he might not have been able to do that today, but the way he spoke, even I became confident as a captain that we could win this match. I’m really happy I have players like that.”Though Chandimal himself had been out for 15 on the fourth evening, he said it was important to him that his middle order batted with freedom. Of the three Sri Lanka players to make fifties, two – Dickwella and Kusal Mendis – batted at a strike rate of around 70 for much of their innings (though they would both slow slightly in the approach to their dismissals).”When it came time for us to bat yesterday, most of what we talked about was playing your own game as batsmen,” Chandimal said. “We knew that it was tough for us to bat out the time and draw the match. If we tried that, it was likely we’d lose. So we said: ‘play your own game’.””As a captain I told them that I’d take the responsibility for any mistakes, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Kusal, Dimuth Karunaratne and Upul Tharanga played well. Then at the end, Asela and Dickwella were excellent.”Dickwella and Mendis had also perished playing aggressive strokes: Mendis a sweep and Dickwella a reverse-sweep. Chandimal, however, refused to characterise those dismissals as wasteful.”We’ve played on these kinds of pitches before in Sri Lanka, and in India and Bangladesh. On these pitches, it’s with sweeps and reverse-sweeps that we can score runs. There’s a risk in that, but if we are chasing scores, we have to play those shots. At training we had practiced those things, and they bore results today.”

Man United Sales Are "Crucial" This Summer

It is "crucial" for Manchester United to find buyers for Donny van de Beek and Fred this summer, as their transfer strategy relies on it, per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Are Donny van de Beek and Fred leaving Manchester United this summer?

It has been a strong transfer window for Erik ten Hag's Red Devils so far this summer, at least in a buying sense.

The arrivals of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund should all instantly improve the first team and be around long enough to help the Dutchman build his perfect side.

The former Ajax boss would probably like to add more players to the team this summer, with Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat one of the names heavily linked to the club.

Unfortunately for the player, and manager, United now have to sell some of their current players to make space for the Moroccan, per The Telegraph.

Two of the names who could potentially leave are former Ajax midfielder van de Beek and Brazilian international Fred.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The latter has been linked with a move to Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasaray. However, despite personal terms not being an issue, there is currently a gap in the player's valuation from both sides, per Sky Sports.

In van de Beek's case, it looks as if his miserable time in the northwest might finally be coming to an end, as a report from Spanish publication Noticias de Gipuzkoa (via the Daily Mail) has claimed that La Liga side Real Sociedad are working on a deal to take him on loan next season, with an option to buy for £8m.

Transfers expert Fabrizio Romano explained the situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

"For Man United, it's crucial to find a solution for Donny van de Beek. Real Sociedad are interested, but also, for Fred, we know the interest of Galatasaray, but I'm told that there is still no agreement with Galatasaray at the moment.

"They tried a few days ago to attack the situation, but some other club could enter the race, so it's not guaranteed yet [for] Galatasaray. There are also other clubs in the race. Let's see what happens with Fred.

"For Man United, it is crucial to sell him to make room for Sofyan Amrabat, [who is] waiting for an official bid, not arrived yet."

Who else at Manchester United is linked with an exit?

While the attention seems to be on van de Beek and Fred at the moment, who else could be heading for the door at Old Trafford?

The player that has undoubtedly received the most coverage regarding a potential departure this summer has been former captain Harry Maguire.

The England international has had a rather bleak couple of seasons at the Theatre of Dreams, compounded by the removal of the captaincy earlier this month, and he has since been linked to several clubs in England and abroad.

The Premier League side that have appeared the most interested thus far have been West Ham United, who, after seeing their initial £20m offer rejected by United, are now considering whether or not they will go back in, per Football Insider.

The same publication revealed earlier this month that the three-time European champions would be willing to sell the former Foxes star at a massive loss, around £35m, but that has been complicated somewhat by Maguire wanting his £10m-a-year contract paid out before he agrees to leave.

It looks like the Red Devils are going to be busy for the rest of the summer as they try their best to shift the players that Ten Hag has deemed unnecessary to his new project.

Newcastle Eyeing Move For "Lethal" £26m "Special Player"

Newcastle United might have already signed Harvey Barnes this summer, but manager Eddie Howe is not done bolstering his attacking ranks yet, with Galatasaray's Nicolo Zaniolo linked with a move to St. James' Park.

The English left-winger joined from Leicester City for £39m in July to continue the summer business, with playmaker Sandro Tonali previously arriving from AC Milan for £55m – a deal to sign young full-back Tino Livramento from Southampton for £40m has also been agreed.

Having secured Champions League football with a fourth-placed Premier League finish last season, Newcastle are consolidating their position with impactful signings, and Zaniolo could indeed be next.

What's the latest on Nicolo Zaniolo to Newcastle?

According to a report from Turkish outlet Hurriyet last week, Zaniolo's agent is in contact with the Magpies concerning a summer transfer, despite the 24-year-old only joining Galatasaray from Roma in February.

Read the latest Newcastle transfer news HERE…

Newcastle would have to acquiesce to the Lions' demands of €30m (£26m) for the Italy international, and whether technical director Dan Ashworth would part with such a sum after the extravagant summer spending remains to be seen.

What position does Nicolo Zaniolo play?

To add a clinical attacking force to an oiled and cohesive outfit would only work in Newcastle's favour, enhancing the side's cutting edge while also not likely to negate the fluidity by disrupting the overarching style of play.

Zaniolo embodies this, having scored five times in the Turkish Super Lig since his arrival, despite only starting on two occasions, and has been labelled as a "lethal playmaker" by journalist Zach Lowy to illustrate this and his first-rate creativity.

Indeed, across the 2021/22 campaign, while playing for Jose Mourinho's Roma, Zaniolo would score eight goals and supply nine assists from 42 outings across all competitions, crucially netting the winning goal in the Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord.

A dynamic forward, the 13-cap Italy star plays both in the central attacking role and as a No. 10, while also more than capable out on the right flank, and due to this, he could enhance the game of striker Callum Wilson at on Tyneside, and vice versa.

Wilson was in emphatic form last season and plundered 18 goals and five assists from 30 Premier League matches, starting only 18 times.

callum-wilson-newcastle-united-leicester-city-match-opinion-premier-league

As per FBref, the 31-year-old ranks among the top 5% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals and the top 7% for assists per 90, highlighting just how impressive his Midas touch has been under Howe's wing for the Toon, having been hailed for his "incredible mindset" by his gaffer.

Zaniolo, who ranks among the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers for total shots and the top 19% for touches in the attacking box per 90, clearly finds dangerous openings with such regularity that with a thriving crop of teammates surrounding him, he could finally harness his potential and rise to true prominence.

Dubbed a “special player” by reporter Carlo Garganese, he has been hindered by a horrendous bout of misfortune that handed him two ACL injuries in less than a year back in 2020, but as he is finding his feet again, Howe might be inclined to make his move and bolster the Newcastle attack with a dynamic new component.

Mitchell spoils Read's Trent Bridge farewell

Chris Read’s last match at Trent Bridge ended with a first defeat of the season, by eight wickets against Worcestershire, to throw the Division Two promotion race wide open

David Hopps at Trent Bridge08-Sep-20171:35

Highlights from the final day of the Specsavers Championship

Worcestershire 243 (Barnard 55, Mullaney 4-31) and 229 for 2 (Mitchell 139*) beat Nottinghamshire 193 (Barnard 4-71) and 275 (Wessels 60, Leach 5-69) by eight wickets
There was to be no perfect send-off for Chris Read in his final Championship match at Trent Bridge. Instead, after two decades of distinguished service, it all ended with a first defeat of the season, by eight wickets against Worcestershire, which has thrown the Division Two promotion race wide open. Read knows his real retirement is three weeks away, with work still to be done.Daryl Mitchell’s measured, unbeaten century – 139 from 212 balls – has ensured that Nottinghamshire, runaway leaders all season, no longer look quite so impregnable. They follow this loss against Worcestershire with tricky away games against Northants and Sussex, two more sides with Division One ambitions.Remarkably, victory completed an outstanding treble for Worcestershire who have beaten Notts this season in all three formats of the game – this against a side that have won both limited-overs trophies and, even with this defeat, remain on course for the Division Two title. In early season, Nottinghamshire blew away opponents with the pace bowling of James Pattinson and Stuart Broad. The contest is more even now and they will need to address it with greater composure than they managed against a highly-professional Worcestershire side which left their coach, Steve Rhodes, bursting with pride.Worcestershire were strong favourites when they resumed on 123 for 2, in search of 226, but few expected them to complete their task with such utter certainty. Mitchell, who conceded the captaincy with some reluctance last September, must regard the decision with more equanimity now, with six Championship hundreds to his name: only Kumar Sangakkara, for Surrey, has made as many.”It’s nice to be in good company because Kumar’s not a bad player – but he got there in about eight games,” Mitchell wryly observed.Along the way, he became only the second player to reach 1,000 first-class (and Championship) runs for the season, something else which only Sangakkara had achieved. As England know to their cost, it has not been a summer when county batsmen have been thrusting themselves into prominence by scoring heavily.Daryl Mitchell led Worcestershire to victory with an unbeaten hundred•Getty Images

Joe Clarke, who was dismissed for a first-ball duck in Worcestershire’s first innings, provided support in an unbroken partnership of 106, by making 28 not out. Brett Hutton was exasperated by several early play-and-misses, including an appeal for a catch at the wicket that was turned down, but then conceded 14 off an over and the job was as good as done.Notts’ recognition that their chances were slim was encapsulated by the decision to start to the day, if only briefly, with the left-arm slows of Samit Patel. Patel, of course, had dismissed Shahid Afridi first ball in the NatWest Blast semi-final and perhaps felt some magic dust remained, but more relevant was memories of his central part in a cramping-up a Worcestershire run chase two years earlier. There was to be no repeat. By the time Patel returned to the attack, Worcestershire’s victory was beckoning. Mitchell marked his hundred by lofting him to the short boundary for extra-cover sixes and then beat some lackadaisical off-side fielding by Cheteshwar Pujara and Alex Hales to seal the victory.”It’s certainly my best hundred of the summer, possibly my best ever in those tough circumstances,” Mitchell said. “They have a really good attack, on a spicy wicket and the state of the game as well. It was a massive game for us so to get us over the line is very pleasing.”We had a good chat beforehand, this morning, and we felt that we’d earned the right to be a bit more positive, having done the hard work yesterday. Obviously, at the start the ball was 40 overs old, so it was get in and play some shots, because we were also aware there might be a bit of weather around later.”Worcestershire have closed the gap on Nottinghamshire to 15 points with both counties having two matches remaining. With Notts out of action next week, Worcestershire could conceivably go top if they beat bottom club Leicestershire at New Road. They are still awaiting confirmation that R Ashwin, the India spinner who did not take a wicket here in seam-orientated conditions, will be available to bowl on something more to his liking.

Leeds United: Yorkshire Club Suffer Blow In Pursuit Of "Incredible" Target

Leeds United have reportedly suffered a huge blow in their pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Flynn Downes this summer, as they look to build a squad capable of promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

So far this summer, Daniel Farke has welcomed four reinforcements at Elland Road.

What's the latest on Flynn Downes to Leeds United?

As per Football Insider, Leeds were among the clubs interested in making a move for Downes this summer, but now face the prospect of losing out on the midfielder, with Southampton in pole position.

This comes with West Ham in ongoing deal to sign Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. Football Insider reports that a fresh twist in the deal could see Downes head in the opposite direction.

Leeds, of course, are unable to offer the Hammers such a deal, leaving them unlikely to land the former Swansea City man this summer.

The Yorkshire club won't be the only side to miss out, however, with Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace also among the clubs interested in securing the 24-year-old's signature.

Losing out on Downes to a potential promotion rival in the form of Southampton will be a particular blow for Leeds, who need all the help they can get if they are to earn back their top flight status in the coming year.

How good is Flynn Downes?

Of course, with a deal yet to be agreed between West Ham and Southampton, those at Elland Road could still swoop in. Signing Downes would represent solid business from a Leeds perspective, too.

This is a player with plenty of Championship experience due to his time at Swansea, whilst also possessing the quality to play in the Premier League, as proved by his move to West Ham last summer.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

At his best, the Englishman can outperform the current options under Farke, as shown by the numbers. According to FBref, whilst at Swansea in the Championship, Downes made more progressive carries per 90 than current Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu managed last season, while also producing more goals and assists per 90, painting the picture of a midfielder who contributes at both ends.

It's the type of statistics that have earned the midfielder some significant praise in the past, including from former Swansea manager Russell Martin, who said, via the official club website: "Flynn was incredible, it’s difficult to single people out, but he does the dirty work perfectly well.

“He enables other people to do their roles brilliantly, he knows exactly what his role in the team is.

“Kyle Naughton and the guys at the back appreciate him a lot, I know I would have if I had him playing in front of me. He has an excellent willingness to learn, his attitude, his attention to detail and how quickly he learns is outstanding.

“He’s playing in a completely different role to what he used to play at his previous club, as most of the guys are. His desire to win and athleticism, with his increasing and improving technical ability, shows how much he wants to work.

“That’s the point of playing him in this way, it’s the best way to improve players, it really is.”

Rabada, Maharaj fire SA to thumping win

Bangladesh lasted only 83 minutes on the final day, losing seven wickets for 41 runs to crash to a 333-run defeat

The Report by Mohammad Isam02-Oct-20171:15

Moonda: Bangladesh will be disappointed with inability to compete

Bangladesh lost seven wickets for 41 runs on the final morning in Potchefstroom, crashing to 90 all out in a whopping 333-run defeat to South Africa. The visitors lasted only 83 minutes in the morning session as Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj ran through the side.Rabada, who took over the lead fast bowler’s role in the absence of Morne Morkel, struck three times in his first four overs of the day, while left-arm spinner Maharaj added three wickets to his tally to take his innings figures to 4 for 25 and complete a match haul of seven wickets. This was the first time in ten years that Bangladesh were bowled out for a double-figure total in Tests, and the first time they were dismissed by South Africa for less than 100 runs in a Test.Mushfiqur Rahim was the first to go, falling to Rabada for 16 off a delivery that bounced sharply, and Hashim Amla held on to a good catch over his head at slip. Rabada then got Mahmudullah to drag one on to his stumps, similar to his dismissal in the first innings off Morkel. Within 30 minutes, Bangladesh had lost their last two senior batsmen.Liton Das, who had earned credit with his smart wicket-keeping on the fourth afternoon, left a Rabada inducker that slammed into his front pad, making it an easy lbw decision for the umpire. Five balls later, Maharaj trapped Sabbir Rahman leg-before as he attempted a sweep early in his innings. The Bangladesh tail folded quickly after that. Maharaj removed Taskin Ahmed while Rabada’s throw found Shafiul Islam short at the striker’s end after the batsman had opted for an unnecessary third run. The match ended when Mustafizur lobbed a simple catch back to Maharaj.Bangladesh began this Test by opting to bowl first on a decidedly flat pitch, a decision that surprised even South Africa captain Faf du Plessis. Faced with South Africa’s first-innings total of 496, they avoided a follow-on but in their second innings, the panic seemed to set in during the fourth evening, when Bangladesh lost their top three quickly after being set a target of 424. The second innings will be a big disappointment for the visitors and could be an ominous sign for the remainder of the series. The second match starts from October 6 in Bloemfontein.
