Vernon Philander will return to South Africa for rehabilitation on a groin injury suffered while playing for Sussex. He is expected to be out for “two to three weeks” and will miss Sussex’s Royal London Cup campaign.Philander was due to be available for the first two months of the county season, with a view to acclimatising ahead of South Africa’s tour this summer. However, he only managed to send down 17 overs in Sussex’s opening Championship match – a 226-run defeat to Kent at Hove – and did not take the field in the second innings.Sussex have announced that he will head back to South Africa to rest, ruling him out of their Championship match against Nottinghamshire starting on Friday, as well as the group stage of the Royal London Cup. The club hope Philander will then be able to play in four Championship fixtures, starting with Durham’s visit on May 21.Philander has not played an ODI for South Africa since 2015 and did not make the squad for the Champions Trophy despite being considered for his ability to swing the new ball in English conditions. His fitness for the Test series, which starts on July 6, is likely to be a more pressing concern.
India’s pacers claimed yet another batting line-up after the batsmen laid the foundation for a 240-run victory at The Oval

Bangladesh, who face England in the Champions Trophy opener on June 1, collapsed spectacularly, falling to 22 for 6, before eventually getting bowled out for 84 in their chase of 325 against India in the warm-up game at The Oval. After allrounder Hardik Pandya had clattered an unbeaten 80 off 54 balls to propel India to 324, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar ripped through Bangladesh’s top half with the new ball. The seamers utilised the overcast conditions, and extracted sharp movement and bounce from a pitch that had hitherto appeared benign, taking three wickets each. The procession began when Soumya Sarkar slashed away from his body at an Umesh delivery that straightened in the corridor. Sarkar appeared confused when the Indian fielders went up for a caught-behind appeal, walking down the track to consult Imrul Kayes about a possible review, before quickly realising there weren’t be any available. Perhaps, it was an early sign of what was to come for Bangladesh, who would soon lose Kayes and Shakib Al Hasan to misguided hook shots.Sabbir Rahman had his stumps rattled by a full inswinger, while two vicious deliveries that climbed from a length took the outside edges of Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain. The chase had effectively ended with only 45 balls bowled. Mehedi Hasan, who had earlier bowled an economical spell (9-1-39-0), offered resistance with 24, but could not find enough support from the other end.India had lost the toss, but Virat Kohli was happy at being put in. Shakib stood-in as captain in the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal, who were both rested ahead of Thursday’s fixture against England. Bangladesh’s intention was to give their bowling line-up a lift after they had failed to defend 341 against Pakistan on Saturday.Rohit Sharma, who last played for his country in October 2016, opened alongside Shikhar Dhawan. He, however, lasted only three balls before dragging a short and wide ball from Rubel Hossain onto his stumps. At the other end, Mustafizur Rahman troubled Dhawan outside the off stump, before inducing a loose shot from Ajinkya Rahane – pushed down to No. 3 on Tuesday – and disturbing his stumps via the inside edge.Dinesh Karthik, streaky throughout his nine-ball duck in the previous warm-up game against New Zealand, started tentatively again before finding his timing. He strung together a 100-run stand for the third wicket with Dhawan. The stand, though, ended when the opener played one shot too many against left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam, hoicking him straight to midwicket after hitting 10 runs off the first three balls of the 23rd over.Karthik, dropped on 29, brought up his fifty in the 26th over, before shifting gears, getting his next 43 runs off only 26 balls. Karthik had to retire six short of a hundred, having staked his claim for a middle-order spot in India’s XI. Yuvraj Singh, who missed the previous warm-up match because of viral fever, did not bat in this game, but the lower-middle order fired.Kedar Jadhav, who did not play against New Zealand as well, made 31 off 38 balls at No. 5. Hardik and Ravindra Jadeja then dominated the last 15 overs. Hardik motored along positively, picking the gaps when he couldn’t find the boundaries, eventually showing his ability to finish the innings with four powerful sixes. Jadeja’s stay wasn’t as fluent. Apart from a release shot that flew over long-on, Jadeja struggled to rotate the strike and his 36-ball innings yielded only 32.
Chelsea have already agreed personal terms with Montpellier striker Elye Wahi as the Ligue 1 side await their first bid, according to reports out of France.
Who will Chelsea sign?
Mauricio Pochettino's side are preparing for their new manager's debut season behind-the-scenes, having already sealed summer deals for Christopher Nkunku from Leipzig and Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal.
Chelsea have also seen a plethora of stars from last season leave through the exit door, including the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy, Mason Mount, Kalidou Kouliably, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N'Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta.
That's not even counting youngster Ethan Ampadu, who joined Leeds United in a permanent deal too. The mass exodus helps to balance Chelsea's books and frees up squad space for more potential signings this summer.
The west Londoners are still believed to be locked in talks over a move for Brighton star Moises Caicedo as Pochettino looks to shore up his central midfield options.
Meanwhile, they have also been tipped to sign a new forward as out-of-favour flop Romelu Lukaku is likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, if a solution can be found.
Chelsea have been linked with Tottenham's Harry Kane – though he will be near-impossible to prise away from chairman Daniel Levy – and even Napoli's Victor Osimhen.
The Blues also hold a serious interest in electric young forward Wahi from Montpellier, with reports this week suggesting Chelsea are set to lodge a formal bid for him and lead the race.
Todd Boehly watches on from the stands at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea play in the Premier League.
According to a report out of Europe and French news outlet L'Equipe (via Get Football News France), the 20-year-old has "found an agreement" on personal terms with Chelsea.
The idea of moving to London is "attractive" to Wahi, but a move would see him join sister club Strasbourg on loan for the 2023/2024 season under Patrick Vieira. That idea isn't exactly enticing to him, but he isn't completely closed off to it either.
Meanwhile, it is believed Montpellier are "awaiting a €30 million (£26m) opening proposal from Chelsea" – which is the "minimum" Montpellier Chairman Laurent Nicollin expects for him.
How good is Elye Wahi?
The young forward scored 19 goals and assisted five others in just 33 Ligue 1 appearances last term, making him quite the exciting prospect for Chelsea supporters.
Ex-Caen academy director Francis de Taddeo, speaking to the media on Wahi, believes his potential is sky high – while he also lauded the forward's exceptional speed and physicality.
De Taddeo said:
"He is a powerful, athletic and fast player with a range of dribbling skills where only he knows what he is going to do next."
The starlet has been revered by members of the media as well, with journalist Andrés Onrubia Ramos explaining on Twitter how Wahi can be a "real beast" in the final third.
"Elye Wahi (2003). If he manages to polish the definition, we are facing a striker who is going to exceed ten goals per season," said Ramos.
"A real beast in space that, in addition, associatively also leaves interesting things. It should definitely explode."

Stephen Parry claimed his first five-wicket haul in the Championship and Haseeb Hameed guided Lancashire’s chase to inflict defeat on the champions
Paul Edwards at Southport12-Jun-2017 ScorecardLancashire and Middlesex’s cricketers reported back for pre-season training last November. A few weeks later, officials at Southport and Birkdale CC heard they would be hosting this game against the champions, which ended in mid-afternoon on the final day when Steven Croft’s straight six off Ravi Patel completed an eight-wicket victory over the champions. It was Middlesex’s first defeat since they lost to Worcestershire in September 2015.So for four June days these three groups of people, all of them professional in their particular ways, have been joined in closely-related endeavours: one of them in preparing to stage a cricket match, the other two in competing against each other to win it. And thus we have a link between Bev Baybutt’s careful editing of the programme for this match and Stephen Parry’s maiden five-wicket haul in Championship cricket and, indeed, his first such return in the first-class game for a decade. It was Parry’s two wickets late on the fourth morning which ensured that Lancashire would need only 108 to win. Until those final breakthroughs, there seemed a chance that Tim Murtagh and Toby Roland-Jones’ shrewd hitting would set Lancashire a target in excess of 150. But Murtagh ventured cautiously down the pitch only to be stumped by Alex Davies for 27 and Roland-Jones swung across a straight one and was leg before for 31.Davies walked rather proudly off the field knowing that only Warren Hegg among Lancashire wicketkeepers had completed more dismissals in a match than the ten he had managed at Southport; on the stroke of lunch, he cut a rather more disappointed figure after he had been caught by John Simpson off Roland-Jones for 13 but one doubts he lunched on water-biscuits and self-pity. Liam Livingstone was the only other Lancashire batsman to lose his wicket and he had the consolation of knowing that he had been selected for England’s T20 squad. Haseeb Hameed helped himself to 104 minutes’ batting practice and made a pleasingly serene 38 not out, the sort of innings that suggests big runs are not far away. Within an hour of the game ending, Paul Parker and his battalion of workers were stacking the chairs they had so carefully set out less than a week ago. Lindsey Bridge’s tremendous alliums were still blooming but there were only a few spectators left on the ground to admire such floral delights.Haseeb Hameed saw Lancashire home in a small chase•Getty Images
No one could doubt the justice of the result of this game. If Middlesex had replaced their suspicious glances at the pitch with a little more tenacity, they might have scored more than the 180 they managed in the first innings; if they had bowled with better lines and lengths Lancashire may not have replied with 309. Resuming on 156 for 6 on the final morning, the visitors lost their overnight batsmen, Dawid Malan and James Harris, to effort balls from Ryan McLaren which bounced more than the batsmen expected. Both were caught at the wicket, Malan when attempting to play no shot at all. Those reverses left the responsibility for building a defendable total in the hands of Roland-Jones and Murtagh; they did what they could in typically aggressive fashion and Glen Chapple admitted that his players were getting “a little twitchy”. Parry settled their nerves and left Chapple praising the way his whole team had responded to their ten-wicket towsing at Headingley. This result will be a fillip to Lancashire’s players as they prepare to meet Hampshire at Emirates Old Trafford; Middlesex’s next match is at home to Yorkshire, which should bring back some happy memories for them. Before long Southport and Birkdale will return to being a club ground once again, although the members will retain warm memories of the 2017 game, albeit that such recollections will not be so precious as those they cherish in their hearts of Durham’s visit last year.In December, pied wagtails will be scuttering along the outfield in the gathering dusk; trains laden with Christmas presents will be rattling into Birkdale station; and the lights in Dover Road will stretch away in the winter darkness. And on one morning in that month S&B’s indefatigable chairman, Tony Elwood, will be told which county will be visiting his ground in 2018.Outground cricket is threatened when it should be encouraged. For many it remains a precious feature of the English season, something which no other sport can match. The game is taken back to a few of the clubs who produce the players. It remains, as Philip Larkin wrote of the Bellingham show in 1958, “something people do, / Not noticing how time’s rolling smithy-smoke / Shadows much greater gestures; something they share / That breaks ancestrally each year into / Regenerate union. Let it always be there.”
Journalist Conor McGilligan believes Leeds United simply must sign a central attacking midfielder this summer to help their creativity issues next season.
How is Leeds' pre-season going?
New Leeds manager Daniel Farke has now seen his side lose twice in pre-season, albeit in tricky fixtures against Manchester United and Monaco.
Both games ended 2-0 and perhaps pointed to a wider issue within the Leeds squad: a lack of creativity.
While the effervescent Luis Sinisterra and Crysencio Summerville posed some threat on the wings, there was not a great deal of spark coming from central areas, with the club not currently possessing a ruthless number ten.
That's an area Leeds simply must improve in the remainder of the transfer window if they have any hope of making a swift return to the Premier League, according to McGilligan
Speaking on his One Leeds Fan Channel, he said: "The problem with Leeds now is we don't have a CAM [central attacking midfielder]. If you think Archie Gray is that CAM, he's not. If you think [Darko] Gyabi is a CAM, he's nowhere near it.
He added: "He needs a CAM, Farke. We need a CAM, and if you don't have a CAM, the striker is naturally going to suffer because the CAM and the striker, as you saw in Farke's system before when it was [Emi] Buendia and [Teemu] Pukki, their synergy is absolutely imperative for a team to go up. It's imperative."
When asked by his live audience who he would consider a good fit for the role, McGilligan said: "Ilias Chair [from Queens Park Rangers]. I think he's gettable as well. I think with the money that Leeds have got, I'd love someone like Ilias Chair.
"I think he's proven it in the Championship, he's a top player. He is of the Buendia mould and I'd be stunned if he wasn't on Farke's list. I'd be really stunned. Ilias Chair would be perfect, he'd be perfect."
Whether Leeds will dip into the market for a natural attacking midfielder who can link with the likes of Patrick Bamford up front is an important decision for Farke to make before the window slams shut.
Chair would certainly be a very good option having provided five goals and a further nine assists in the Championship last season at QPR, although the 25-year-old Moroccan has been linked with a move to Leicester City in the Foxes' pursuit of a James Maddison replacement.
The Whites have only made one addition to their squad so far this summer, bringing in young Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea, while a host of the club's biggest names have left either permanently or on loan, with more likely to depart in the near future.
One midfielder that could arrive at the club imminently is Paris Saint-Germain's Edouard Michut who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, while Leeds also supposedly hold an interest in Swansea City forward Joel Piroe as they look to sharpen their attack.
When do Leeds next play?
Leeds have the opportunity to put two disappointing pre-season results behind them when they face Nottingham Forest on July 27th at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.
The Whites then have three days before they travel to Edinburgh to face Hearts in what will likely be Leeds' final pre-season venture before the Championship season begins.
Leeds begin their league campaign against Cardiff City at Elland Road on July August 6th, a game which can be seen on Sky Sports, and Farke will be hoping to have a few fresh faces in his side before that game comes around.

Fulham could return with another attempt to try and land Manchester United midfielder Fred later in the window, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.
Which clubs are interested in Fred?
According to Corriere dello Sport via Man Utd News, Manchester United will ask for around €10-15 million for Fred this summer and Turkish Super Lig outfit Galatasaray lead the race to sign the Brazil international.
Galatasaray are in negotiations with Manchester United regarding a possible deal for Fred, though no official bid from them has been submitted for the £120k-a-week ace. Lazio president Claudio Lotito holds an attraction towards Fred in addition; nevertheless, Maurizio Sarri isn't keen to bring the midfielder to the Stadio Olimpico this off-season.
The Daily Mail report that Fulham alongside clubs in Saudi Arabia retain an interest in Fred. Marco Silva is believed to be a huge fan of his abilities and would like to bring him to Craven Cottage if possible.
Nevertheless, the outlet claim that Manchester United will in fact demand £20 million for Fred before sanctioning his departure from Old Trafford. Fred has changed his agency and is unlikely to have a long-term future at Manchester United under Erik Ten Hag.
Last term, the 30-year-old made a whopping 56 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United, notching six goals and six assists, as per Transfermarkt.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sky Sports reporter Sheth doesn't think the door is completely closed on Fulham returning to the table for Fred later this window.
Sheth stated: “There has been interest from Fulham. They couldn't agree on a fee simply because United were asking for too much money.
“Don't rule that one out, though, just yet. I think the later you go in the window and the more that United might think, ‘We want to bring in another midfielder’, Fulham might spot that as an opportunity to be able to do a deal on their terms rather than on what Manchester United would want at this stage of the transfer window.”
Who else could Fulham bring in this summer?
Fulham boss Silva will be desperate to bring in some extra bodies this summer to join new additions Raul Jimenez and Calvin Bassey at Craven Cottage to prepare his side for a second successive campaign back in the English top flight, as per Transfermarkt.
Nevertheless, uncertainty continues to rear its ugly head in west London as Aleksandar Mitrovic ploughs on with his attempts to force through a lucrative move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, as per The Daily Mail.
Aleksandar Mitrovic
In terms of prospective incomings, Fulham are keen on Everton forward Demarai Gray and are willing to pay £7 million to offer the Jamaica international an escape route from Goodison Park, though the Toffees are seeking to recoup £10 million for his services, according to The Sun.
Chelsea outcast Callum Hudson-Odoi could be set to move to Fulham despite further interest from Lazio and Nottingham Forest, with the Cottagers believed to be in the box seat to convince the 22-year-old to sign on the dotted line in the final month of the window, as per Football Insider.
